J2 How to Speak About Sensitive Themes
at School

Sensitive themes touching on knowledge should be addressed with finesse, sensitivity and caution as they may
solicit feelings of indignation, unease, and abjection or of
contempt in students. They can bring controversy (wearing the Hijab) and may solicit strong emotions (Holocaust).
They touch the boundaries of sensitivity, of discretion and
of the ease of privacy.
Several studies show that educators at all levels try to avoid
sensitive themes. They do not feel legitimately mandated to
cover these themes and consider themselves as not having the
knowledge to unravel the issues in all their complexity, worried
also about confrontations in the classroom and a loss of control
over their teaching. And yet, sensitive themes, because they
are at the heart of social debates and touch our values and our
social images, can arise in class and do, even when we are not
ready to address them.
In this workshop, we will reflect on the challenges posed by
sensitive themes for those who wish to speak about them
and support them. We will suggest some guiding principles
to address this in school, and will consider different contexts of diversity, across the presentation of the pedagogical guide «How to address sensitive subjects with students »,
prepared with the Centre d’intervention pédagogiqe en
contexte de diversité and the Commission scolaire Marguerite Bourgoeys (Hirsch, Audet & Turcotte, 2016)
*Sivan Hirsch is a professor in the Department of Education at
l’Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières. She holds a Doctorate
in sociology (Paris-Descartes, la Sorbonne) and in Education
(Université Laval), she is interested in the role of education in
inter-community relations, and in the integration of religious
and cultural diversity in schools and its contribution toward the
construction of identity among young people who are part of
this diversity.

J3 An IT (TICs) Toolbox for Animators

We are in the era of School 2.0 for some time, now. As
animators, it is interesting to integrate IT (TIC = Technologies de l’Information et de la Communication) in order
to facilitate the success of certain projects or activities.
Explore 12 technological tools that are easy to use and
applicable in your every-day animation. This can also
reach young people “where they are at” .
This workshop will be dynamic and interactive (technological capsules and concrete examples). Bringing your
own laptop computer would be a plus.
You do not need to be an expert, but come with a spirit of
openness. (Completely up-to-date, this workshop is the
follow-up to the workshop “The IT Toolkit for Animators”
presented at Congrès 2013).

Since the creation of the Animation Service in 2001, it appears that, if the spiritual dimension justifies the service
in the Education Act (Article 36), spirituality renders it difficult to define or to help a parent quickly understand….

This workshop will present the results of a research project conducted with Animators since 2012 on their professionalization. From this research emerge diverse findings that will be discussed in the workshop in order to
think of the future of the service and its professionals, all
the while keeping in mind the current ideological context. We will work, then, on 3 fundamental issues that will
allow us to construct that which the service brings which
is unique in the schools and for the students. These issues
are identity, formation(education/training), and acknowledgement.

J5 Learning to Adjust Your “Inner Weather”,
is to Explore One’s “Inner Horizons”!

This training responds to the expectations of Animators
who accompany teachers wishing to discover a different
approach to well-being and flourishing. It is no longer
the responsibility of the teacher to take on ALL of the
emotions of the child, but more-so, to guide them toward a self-appropriation of their own emotions. “Arbre
en Coeur” teaches a way of life for the teacher (or Animator) so that they may guide the child from their own ex-

periences. This training brings with it a number of playful
tools in order to favour the personal flourishing of each
participant.
*Manon Jean is the founder of Arbre en Coeur, and animator of
workshops for the Commission scolaire Chemin du Roy. She is author of three books on the emotional management of children,
which are published with éditions C.A.R.D. and sold in Canada and
in Europe. For three years, she has participated in psychological
research directed by professors of l’UQTR. A conference animator,
she has written two television series on the subject, directed and
produced by TVCogeco and broadcast in the province.
J6 “The Great Thirsts- The Search for
Meaning and the Construction of
Identity” Documentary & Animation
by Delphine Piperni/primary and secondary (offered in
French)
Les grandes soifs(The Great Thirsts), a 52-minute film on
young people and their search for meaning. For over a
year, the director followed four young people, age 15
to 20, who bring a critical look at their society and who
search, in their own way, for solutions to better live their
transition toward adulthood. Following the viewing, Delphine Piperin will question the Animators on the themes
that nurtured her creative process: Are young Québecers
lacking tools to “live better”? Are they lacking a sense of
“magic” and rituals? Is the Animator the only member
of the school community (and even, of the society!) to
be able to awaken these profound reflections in the student? And is it the role of the Animator to create a feeling
of community with their students (to counter their solitude) and organize rites of passage towards adulthood?
*Delphine Piperni, director, is associated since Fall of 2015 with
Éducation connexion with which she organizes viewings of her
film with young people in secondary 4 & 5, followed by an inclass animation. The blog www.lesgrandessoifs.org offers a panoply of inspiring resources for young people to allow them to
pursue their reflections.

Bill 118 and Beyond….

A bi-lingual workshop that will explore Bill 118, which
gave birth to the work of Spiritual Care, Guidance and
Community Involvement Animation, and is our best tool
to defend a profession which is Turned Toward the Future. Samples of work taken from Animators work will
serve as examples of practical applications for Bill 118.

The workshop will allow participants to observe their
current professional situation in order to better foresee
their future. In the process of becoming, the decisions we
take every day orient the results of our involvement for
tomorrow.
Participants will discuss on the reality of “being responsible for one’s own future and to bring it about with confidence and determination”. Animate one’s profession
with intelligence of the soul and the ardour of being.
A time of mentoring which will sustain the fire that animates Animators in their professional attitude.

V2 “World Café” on the Animation Service

Painting

The workshop will invite you to become conscious of
your “inner world” and its unique spiritual dimension by
way of an artistic approach. Accompanied by our Animator- Colleague in the preparation and realization, come
explore the beneficial influence of the colours that surround us, dwell in us and know how to “energize” us!

work as well as in her leisure.
V4 The Carriers of Hope
with Claude Poudrier*(PÉEC) and Brigitte Chauvette, Animator/primary and secondary (offered in French)
“Turned Toward the Future” while taking advantage of
the present! This is what the resource people will show
in initiating the participants in the pedagogical process
called “Research-Action for the resolution of community
problems” (RA).
This process brings the student to identify a real problematic in their milieu and to resolve it in partnership
with the members of thier community. Secondary students obtain 2 units from MESS in applying the process
of RA.

V5 Young People of Today Engaged for
Their Future
with Geneviève Baril* and Louis-Philippe Lizotte de l’INM*/

L’Institut du Nouveau Monde (l’INM- “Institute of the New
World”) proposes a workshop of reflection and exchange
founded on their twelve years of experience in the area
of citizen participation for young people from 15 to 30
years old.
The workshop will be comprised of two parts: a presentation and animated exchange following the technique of
“Café Conversation”. The presentation will draw a picture
of young people’s engagement in 2016, will address certain challenges such as the low voter participation, and
will present a collaborative track between Animators and
l’INM. Participants will then be invited to react, to reflect
and to exchange on the concrete strategies to engage
the citizen participation of secondary students.

V7 “The Shiner”: A Spiritual & Community
Animation One-Woman Show

From Habanero pepper-eating students to schemers
and sweethearts, The Shiner’s hilarious characters offer
the inside scoop on what the often-misinterpreted title
of Spiritual & Community Animator is really all about.
Seamlessly blending the real Katie Leggitt with the fictional Rebecca Reubens, this one-woman show will share
side-splitting truths about classroom life, touching stories of loss and the magic of imagination. Pack yourself
a tissue box and get primed for “circle time with Miss
Katie”. (The play will be presented in English. Familiarity
with the profession makes for an accessible presentation
for francophones as well.) The play is under an hour in
length.

Luca “Lazylegs” Patueli says he uses his crutches like we
use shoes. They are accessories and not a necessity. What
ever one’s age, race, gender or abilities, everyone can
dance. Dance is that secret buried in each of us. Some
decide to share it, others, to save it for themselves. Conscious or not, life is a dance. Our mouvements, our inspirations, our heartbeats create a rhythm. The least of our
gestures can be transformed into a benefit in our lives.
When we move, we put ourselves “out-there”, carried by

energy, our emotions and the challenges we face. The
choice belongs to us as to the way we transmit our dance
in the world. It is our expression and gives us access to
our inner force. Dance invites us to overcome our limits. So enjoy life fully by dancing and by inviting young
