City History
The City of Schuyler and Colfax County were named after Schuyler Colfax, Vice President of the United States
under President, Ulysses S. Grant. On March 15th, 1869, by an act of legislature, Schuyler, formerly known as
Shell Creek Station, a railhead and cattle loading post, was designated as the county seat of the newly formed
county of Colfax. It was incorporated on June 7th, 1870 and became a city of the second class in 1887. In
1891, Schuyler started building the first municipal light and water plant in Nebraska.
Cattle and the Union Pacific Railroad have played an important part in the settling of Schuyler. Schuyler had
its brief glory as a “rail town.” Dissatisfied with marketing and shipping facilities of the Kansas Railroad and its
terminal point of Abilene, a number of Texas cattlemen sought another vantage point from which to ship their
cattle. Union Pacific officials began in 1869, to woo their trade and the two groups negotiated freight rates, and
an agreement was reached. A spur track was built in June 1870, and Schuyler was in business. During 1870, the
long trail from Texas was beaten barren by thousands of hooves of longhorns and between 40,000 and 50, 000
head were sold in Schuyler.
The town began to prosper. The population jumped from less than 100 to over 600 in a year. But Schuyler’s
hour of glory was short-lived. Homesteaders fenced off the trail. Cattle trampled crops and the farmers resisted
by stampeding the cattle. Laws were enacted protecting the farmers and the trail moved west.

Camping: Located on south end of HWY 15
Campground opens, weather permitting on April 1st and closes approximately October 1st.
Rates: Tent/Camper w/electricity $15 a night per camp site, Tent no electricity $10 a night,
Sewer/Water/Electricity RV site $20 a night per camp site, Water Electricity RV site $15 a

Colfax Theater: Located at 314 E 11th Street
Offers weekend movies, may be rented for birthday parties or special events requiring a
film or DVD showing. Concessions are also available when theater is open. For more

Golf Club & Restaurant: Located at 285 Higgins Drive
Schuyler Golf Club is a scenic, public nine-hole golf course with a new club house addition.

The mission of the Schuyler Public Library is to enrich lives and build community by ensuring
universal access to resources for information, learning, inspiration and enjoyment.
The library offers books, interlibrary loan service, periodicals, DVDs, audio books, archives on
microfilm, public access computers, language learning resources, free Wi-Fi, cake pans, and
accu-cut die cuts. The library also provides digital resources including, Overdrive downloadable
ebooks and audio books, Ebsco and NebraskAccess databases, Tumblebooks for kids, Pronunciator-language program, Zinio - downloadable magazines and more. The library also hosts story
hour , reading programs, and other events for all ages through out the year. Check with librarians for current and upcoming offerings by calling (402)352-2221.Hours: Monday - Thursday

Schuyler/Colfax County Museum: Located at 309 E 11th Street
Founded by the Schuyler Historical Society, Inc. in 1977. Located at 309 E 11th Street in downtown Schuyler. Large historical display of Schuyler/Colfax County, including photos, war memoirs, Pawnee Indian history, vintage clothing and rock items. Of interest to all ages. Tours by
appointment anytime. Open Tuesday 1 to 3 PM, & Thursday 5 to 7 PM. Monthly meeting is the
second Monday of each month at museum. May thru Sept. 7 PM and Oct. thru April 1:30 PM.

Parks: South Park located on south HWY 15 by South Park Rd;
North Park located at corner of 17th & B Street
South Park has a lake, playground equipment and two shelter houses for public use.
North Park has baseball fields, tennis court/basketball court, playground equipment, &
shelter house.
Oak Ballroom: Located at 175 Higgins Drive
The Oak Ballroom is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this beautiful
building was built by the WPA and completed in 1937. It’s name was derived from the
huge natural timbers and beams cut from native oak trees. The Oak Ballroom is used for
receptions dances, parties, cultural events, and as a general community center. Call

St. Benedict Center: Located at 1126 RD I
St. Benedict Center, a retreat and conference center. They offer a retreat center for seekers
of God, for people who are tired of living in a noisy world and want to be alone in order to
listen to the Lord. For more information call (402) 352-8819 or visit the website at
www.stbenedictcenter.com. Open year round, except for major holidays. Monday Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. & Sunday 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Closed for two weeks
during the second half of December.

The SACC serves as an initial contact and information center for those interested in Schuyler and its businesses and organizations. When asked by phone, email, or office visit we try to promote our member services.
You will receive a monthly newsletter filled with news of community events, interesting articles, and featured businesses and organizations of the month. All members are recognized in the monthly newsletter
when dues are received and listed monthly afterwards. Our newsletter is emailed, distributed to waiting
rooms in Schuyler, posted on the community web page at http://schuylernebraska.net/chamber-ofcommerce/community-events-calendar/, and mailed to members without computer access. We offer community events to be submitted and printed for free. You may also advertise your business or a special you
have, these ads cost $15 a month. The weekly update sent out weekly on Wednesdays is available for advertising at $5 a week.
Members are entitled to attend the monthly “After Hours,” held by various businesses and organizations.
This encourages people to network with other members, so we can all work together. As a member you
are given the opportunity to host an “After Hours.” This is a good way for fellow businesses and community members to learn more about you and your business or organization.

The SACC encourages shopping in Schuyler with the use of “Chamber Bucks” which can be given as gifts,
prizes, bonuses or incentives to help accomplish this goal. Dollars spent in Schuyler stay in Schuyler. Only businesses and individuals who are members of the Chamber will be reimbursed for the Chamber Bucks
spent at their establishment. Chamber Bucks work just like regular money to be used to buy goods and
services.
You will also be entitled to a one year annual use of the SACC’s U.S. Bulk Mail Permit stamp. Along
with access to the copy machine for 10¢ copies, mailing list of Chamber members, and free use of the
Chamber meeting room. Contact the office for more details.
Listing in the Chamber Directory. Directories will be available to new residents, anyone asking for more
information on the community and at Schuyler Inn, Cobblestone Inn & Suites and St. Benedict Center.
Promotions & Community Events:
With the support from our Chamber members the Chamber is able to provide the following:
Annual Schuyler Celebration Banquet, Open House Expo, Teacher Appreciation Award, City Wide Garage
Sale and Sidewalk Sale weekend, Schuyler Community Night at the Lincoln Saltdogs, Fireworks and activities
during Labor Day Celebration, Halloween Costume Contest, Downtown Christmas, Parade of Trees, First Dollar to new business owners, and supporting special events that come to Schuyler. These events are a way to
unite the community and promote Schuyler.
