MEGYN KELLY Motherhood, Marriage & Taking On Trump Jen &Ben TOGETHER IN PARIS: ‘HE WANTS HER BACK’ EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW KELLY RIPA MY SIDE OF THE STORY DANCING WITH THE STARS’ Nyle DiMarco ‘I’M HAPPY TO BE DEAF’ After being stunned by the news of Michael Strahan’s sudden departure, the Live cohost opens up about what really happened HOLLY MADISON’S PLAYBOY NIGHTMARE ‘I Was Living in Fear’ May 23, 2016 Kelly Ripa ‘I KNOW HOW LUCKY I AM’ AS HER COHOST SAYS GOODBYE, THE LIVE STAR OPENS UP ABOUT TAKING A STAND FOR HER SHOW, HER STAFF AND HERSELF By KATE COYNE Photographs by DOUGLAS FRIEDMAN Happy Days “Michael is a tremendous talent, and we are all so proud of him,” Ripa says of her departing cohost Michael Strahan. Photographed at The Quin Hotel, New York City PEOPLE May 23, 2016 47 O On a rainy Wednesday afternoon, Kelly Ripa sits in her office at the production company she runs with her husband, Mark Consuelos, and eyes a pile of apple cider donuts. She is still in wardrobe from that morning’s taping of her talk show Live with Kelly and Michael, and baked goods are the least of what she has on her plate. Her oldest son, Michael, 18, is soon to depart for college. Her youngest, Joaquin, 13, is applying to high schools. And her middle child, daughter Lola, is “deeply committed to being 14, and all the drama that goes with that,” Ripa, 45, says with a knowing smirk. “She truly seems to need a level of drama to function. She requires it for forward momentum.” For the past few weeks Lola’s mother has been able to empathize fully, as drama surrounded Ripa like never before in nearly three decades in show business. Twenty-six years, in fact, have been spent at ABC, first on All My Children, then on Live. Yet when the network announced on April 19 that Ripa’s cohost Michael Strahan would be joining Good Morning America, meaning he would leave Live after less than four years on the job (a blip for a show in which Regis Philbin was cohost for 28 years, Kathie Lee Gifford for 15, and Ripa herself is now in her 16th year), Ripa was one of the last to be informed of the decision—and was told just as a press release about the news was being sent to the media. Sources told People that Ripa felt blindsided and deeply hurt—not so much that Strahan would be departing for another show, but that she hadn’t been included in such conversations or told in advance. The next day, April 20, Ripa did not appear on Live; the following three shows had already been scheduled as time off that she and Consuelos, 45, had long planned around their 20th wedding anniversary. But in the wake of her fourshow absence, rumors abounded that shutting Ripa out of the Strahan conversations was a sure sign that Live itself was doomed—that the disregard for her feelings was tantamount to a larger dismissal of the show. Ripa remained silent until Tuesday, April 26, when she returned to the show and a standing ovation. “Our long national nightmare is over,” she quipped, adding, “I needed a couple of days to gather my thoughts.” She went on to express her gratitude that “apologies have been made” and that her time away had “started a much greater conversation about communication and consideration, and, most importantly, respect in the workplace.” Finally, in a nod to those who had sniped that anyone earning a reported $20 million 48 May 23, 2016 PEOPLE “I think sometimes if you’re on the big-business side of things, it’s easy to forget that you’re dealing with people who have feelings, not just a business unit,” Ripa says. ‘Our show is one based on chemistry, camaraderie and trust. All of those things don’t just happen’ —KELLY RIPA salary doesn’t have the right to be upset, ever, about anything, Ripa acknowledged her father and her working-class New Jersey roots. “My dad, who was a bus driver for 30 years, thinks we’re all crazy,” she said. “And I think he’s right.” Now Ripa is about to launch another cohost search, but there is still much on her mind about her current cohost’s departure and its effect on her and the staff at Live. There are also still several misconceptions she’s anxious to dispel. “I think what people need to understand about the entire situation is that I didn’t just not show up,” Ripa says about her decision not to appear on air April 20. As she was being informed of the fait accompli of Strahan’s departure, “I said, in the room, ‘I am going to take the day off.’ I needed to actually sit and gather information. I needed to make sure I said the appropriate things on TV and didn’t just come out and say whatever,” she explains. “Here’s the thing: I understand things HAIR: RYAN TRYGSTAD/ORIBE/STARWORKS ARTISTS; MAKEUP: KRISTOFER BUCKLE/DIORSHOW/CROSBY CARTER MANAGEMENT; PROP STYLIST: DINO DEGUICEIS/JUDY CASEY; STYLIST: FAITH CROMAS; (PREVIOUS SPREAD) TOP: PROENZA SCHOULER; JEANS: MOTHER; SNEAKERS: ISABEL MARANT; JEWELRY: VALE; INSET: SANDY SOOHOO/DISNEY-ABC/GETTY IMAGES; (THIS PAGE) DRESS: ERDEM; SHOES: JOHN VITO ROSSI; JEWELRY: VALE DEC 2015 150 THE NEW RULES OF PARTY DRESSING Saris for soirées Dresses for dancing Shoes for the after-party Get the body of a Victoria’s Secret Angel MANISH MALHOTRA 25 years with the leading ladies living EAT, STAY, PARTY At Quin Hotel’s new suite, guests can check in and throw a party—all curated by a professional planner This party season, if you’re in New York, check into the freshly minted triple penthouse suite at the Quin Hotel. Some offer fleets of Bentleys for guest use, others come with personal shoppers from Dior, art collections by Robert De Niro – and one even has a concierge who will remember the temperature of your bath water. But our team has done the hard work for you and picked out the suites that are, in our humble opinion, most worth checking into the next time you’re in town Even regular Mandarin fans might not know about this suite, which is so top secret it doesn’t appear on the website or any of the hotel’s marketing material. Bookings come only via word of mouth, (Brad Pitt and Beyoncé are among those who got wind of it), and the suite is considered by staff to be better than the Presidential one. It certainly looks more striking, eschewing the brand’s signature black lacquer and Asian-style gilt for something more modern and New York. Guests are greeted by a huge modern artwork of frosted Fruit Loop packets, while metallic wallpapers, minimal furniture and the hi-tech media center make it feel slick and modern. There are wraparound views across the Hudson and Central Park, but despite glamorous touches – there is a Swarovski chandelier above the master bath – it somehow remains beautifully homely and its two entrances add to the sense of privacy. Special amenities The Dior Cabine, in which stylists from the Dior flagship in the city will provide clothes, personalized styling and shopping for Suite 5000 guests. Plus there’s a curated record collection featuring a wide range from 1930s jazz to rare 1970s hip hop. Extra touches on request – one family requested Minnie Mouse themed decoration in the suite for their child. The hotel is notoriously secretive about its guest list but Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz, Emma Stone, Carey Mulligan and Alexa Chung have all been spotted there recently. The urban location (you’re just above the action on Lafayette Street) is best enjoyed from bed, with its striking green floral print headboard. The botanical theme extends out to the little balcony planted with meadow flowers inside old-fashioned sinks. There is also an artfully-worn coffee table and fabric wall coverings that combine the luxury of traditional textures with a more playful aesthetic. Art lover’s Mecca Showstopping glamour PENTHOUSE THE QUIN THE FITZGERALD SUITE THE PLAZA This boutique hotel houses a permanent art collection, including works from Irish painter Patrick Graham and graffiti artist Nick Walker. In the three-story Quin penthouse, there is also a rotating selection of artwork curated by DK Johnston. Yet one of the most stunning features is 1,300 sq ft of outdoor space on a terrace with seating for up to 30, including an outdoor dining table for 14. The first floor is an open-plan living area with a full kitchen, while the top two floors comprise the private spaces. Our favorite feature is the glass-enclosed marble wet room that comes with a rain shower and deep-soak tub. A departure from the Beaux Arts decor of the rest of the hotel, Catherine Martin, costume and production designer, and co-producer of the Baz Luhrmann-directed film of The Great Gatsby, has designed the Art Deco suite dedicated to F. Scott Fitzgerald. Darkly seductive and glamorous, the domed chandeliers, smoked-glass mirrors and muted gray color scheme provide the backdrop, but the beauty is in Martin’s attention to detail and thoughtful touches, such as the embroidered monograms on towels and linen inspired by Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan. Another unique and stylish touch is a reading corner with a curated book collection, which includes, of course, Fitzgerald’s complete works. Special Amenities Curated gift crate from Kerber’s Farm, hand deliveries from Bergdorf Goodman, and Frette robes. There is also the option to rent the entire 17th floor to create a private enclave for up to 20 people, and use of Jung Lee events services – it can organize special touches such as a Caipirinha bar or whiskey tasting station.
