Watts and Walter Crane were enthusiastic mural painters. However, in more recent times we have, perhaps, slightly less celebrated but no less interesting wall artists. Sarah considers the Banksy graffiti in Notting Hill and the ‘ski mural’ in South Kensington. Maria looks into the background of how the mural in Kensington Church Walk came into being, as well as learning more about the mural in Holland Park. The summer may feel long to parents (and to be fair to children also): we have therefore extended our What’s On section to include many activities for children, and Tui also highlights those on offer in W8 and nearby, in her article. Providing a pleasing backdrop to picnics in the park on a sunny day, the murals were painted by Mao Wen Biao between 1994 and 1995 and depict a garden party from the late nineteenth century. Many of the people illustrated in the murals were based on members of the Friends of Holland Park, which commissioned them. There does not seem to be many other exterior wall paintings in W8, but in the environs close by, there’s been a winter sports scene, continuous murals from the Chelsea Arts Club and a handful of Banksy’s graffiti art. Last year, Johny Midnight depicted a winter sports scene opposite on the exterior wall of a building owned by ski holiday specialist Erna Low, in Reece Mews, South Kensington, across the street from the former home of Francis Bacon. Close to the (infamous) “Stripey House” in South Row, the ski scene did not create as much controversy, and paid small homage to Bacon who is depicted in the mural. The mural shows a chair lift crossing over a slope with a felled skier, a snowboarder and other skiiers in the distance. The skiiers closest to the foreground appear to have reached the bottom or are taking a breather. Other murals closer to home include the ones that occasionally adorn the exterior of the Chelsea Arts Club. Normally a plain white building, the exterior is periodically painted, The ‘Banksy’ painting on the corner of Acklam and Portobello Road (Image Source: www.widewalls.ch) 6 Ski scene by Johny Midnight on the wall of Reece Mews (Image source: www.getwestlondon.co.uk) usually to coincide with one of the twiceyearly themed balls held by the Club. Previous murals have depicted a dragon, the Blitz, circus performers, and past members of the Club, to name just a few. Banksy hasn’t yet made it to Kensington, but he has two famous “graffiti” works nearby. One, in Notting Hill, on the corner of Acklam and Portobello Roads, is the Graffiti Painter aka Velasquez depicting the painter painting “Banksy” in red cartoon letters. Recently, he has also painted one in Knightsbridge to protest against the treatment of the Calais refugees. Near the French embassy, he depicted Cosette from Les Miserables crying from tear gas. It featured a Q code, that when scanned, took viewers to a video of a police raid in Calais. The piece was covered up after thieves tried to steal it; however, before it was covered up, Google digitalized it. Interspersed among the statutes forming the core of public art in Kensington, murals can depict and enlighten us to the history of the Borough, as well as in some instances, sending a message. Perhaps the best-known of Kensington's outdoor murals, its delicate colours contrast strikingly with those of the bold collage placed in 1998 by the Notting Hill Gate Improvement Group on the wall of the W11 Oxfam Shop. The mural with the most fascinating history, however, is surely the one at No 6 Kensington Church Walk with its whimsical assortment of toys, hats and antiques. The owner had lived in Kensington since the early Sixties. He bought No 6 as a family house in 1970, acquiring by 1972 an acre of land in the King's Road, which he turned into Worlds End Nurseries.* An 8ft bronzeresin Gorilla, standing guard at the gate amply demonstrates his sense of humour, while down the path a flock of model sheep, plus a ram called Basil, draw the eye to the most luxuriant part of the gardens. The mural at No 6 was created to prevent graffiti - writers defacing the wall with 'curly writing'. By the late 1970s after the Shah of Persia was deposed, many Iranians arrived in London. As Bank Melli Iran had a branch in the High Street, a plethora of political graffiti hit Kensington. Tired of white-washing his wall to cover them, the owner of No 6, reckoned a mural might prove a deterrent. He engaged a Mr King to paint one. This talented artist believed he had 'a personal hot line to God.' He would stop painting to have religious chats with elderly ladies en route for St Mary Abbotts Church. This was not what the owner of No 6 had intended, so he provided a portable radio to play distracting music. He soon found his artist, tuning in to 'Songs of Praise' in the clear belief that Jesus wanted him for a sunbeam. This again was not quite what his patron had envisaged, but eventually the mural was completed, showing the owner's son aged 13 going off to Harrow in his school tie, his daughter aged 11 leaning out of the window, his mother with her many Ascot hats and his father in the doorway of the Town and Country shop. The owner himself looks on from the roof garden 10 Top: Postcard painting of the mural at No. 6 Kensington Church Walk (By kind couresy of the owner). Below: Section of the Victorian Garden Party at Holland Park, by Maio Wen Biao (Image: Lucy Elliott Photography) above the front door. In addition his two Godchildren are featured, then pupils at St Mary Abbotts School. One still walks past the mural daily on her way to work. The tiny Antique Doll Shop was opposite, between what is now Hermione Harbutt and No. 18. The mural which even includes the family cat, features as part of the historical London walks tour and is frequently admired by residents and visitors to Kensington, alike. (*Recently described by The Independent as the third finest garden centre in the UK. The first and second being the RHS’s own garden centres.) For hundreds of years liqueurs have been made, loved and appreciated, being one of the most popular alcoholic drinks around. Different herbs and fruits are included in the ingredients for the recipes, many of which are closely-guarded. If cocktails are a passion, then liqueurs will add a ‘zing’ and turn ok into the ‘WOW’ factor. Hampers and attractive gift packages are available, plus gift vouchers – perhaps surprise someone special? The website is comprehensive and includes information on products, recipes, as well as particulars about gifts, weddings, ceremonies and how to book a tasting event – now there’s a thought! Demijohn, a liquid deli, was established during 2004 by Angus and Frances Ferguson. This family-run company quickly gained a reputation for high-quality liqueurs. Multi award-winning Demijohn goes to great lengths to source new ingredients, liqueurs, spirits, oils and vinegars from many locations in the UK and Europe. Eye-catching, beautifully-shaped glass bottles, decanters and containers of various sizes are an added bonus for the impressive presentation of products. The bottles, decanters and containers are reusable and a complimentary personal message can be included, on request. From the popular productions, utilising many fruits, including raspberries, damsons, cherries, blackcurrants and gooseberries, to rhubarb vodka and apricot brandy, plus so much more, there are plenty of choices and something for all tastes and palates, including organics. Several have a ‘following’ of devotees and regularly grace a great number of dining occasions - particularly a fine, favourite liqueur, for accompanying desserts or to enjoy afterwards. I located chocolate rum liqueur and found this exceptional, with outstanding balance, texture and flavour. Toffee whisky liqueur is very popular, as are Demijohn’s limoncello liqueur and also walnut liqueur, plus grapefruitcello – superb! Stores are located in Edinburgh, Glasgow, York and Oxford, with more planned. Online ordering is available (and easy), too. Deliveries are efficient and reliable. Liqueurs, whiskies, wines and spirits are all within their excellent ranges, plus superb oils and vinegars. 12 Examples of liqueurs on offer from Demijohn: Spiced Rum Liqueur and Chocolate Rum Liqueur (Image Source: www.demijohn.co.uk) Tel: 0845 604 8350 Email: [email protected] www.demijohn.co.uk Excellence in construction, maintenance and renovation In homes, offices and schools, Hawkespur is committed to providing the best solutions to your building projects and to supporting you every step of the way. Charity/Residents’ Groups/Societies’ News Music, Magic and Mayhem came to The ClementJames Centre. The award winning composer and actor Simon Slater led an all-star 14 cast to raise a staggering £10,000 for North Kensington charity The ClementJames Centre. Performing to a sell-out audience, Slater had the crowd singing along during the variety show held in May. He was joined by magician Neil Kelso, the brilliant singing trio The Spitfire Sisters and Olivier Award-winning actress Janie Dee. Issy van Randwyck, star of A Streetcar Named Desire and actress Saskia Wickham also performed, while pianist Steve Christie tinkered the ivories throughout the show. General News Over 300 Kensington and Chelsea residents came together to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday in Kensington Town Hall on Sunday, 12 June 2016. ‘Tea for the Queen’ was hosted by the Royal Borough’s cadet and uniformed youth organisations along with generous contributions of time and supplies from local residents, businesses and voluntary organisations. Guests enjoyed a traditional English tea and slice of ceremonial cake as they watched live footage of the tea party on The Mall. The afternoon was rounded off with a traditional sing-a-long supported by the Metropolitan Police Choir with classics including a rousing rendition of Land of Hope and Glory. Victoria Borwick, MP for Kensington & Chelsea, said: “We were delighted to be part of this historic and memorable celebration and in our own small way pay tribute to the dedication Her Majesty has shown us throughout her lifetime.” The Mayor of the Royal Borough, Councillor Mrs Elizabeth Rutherford, added: “Today would not have been possible without the hard work of our young people who were so ably supported by so many local residents and businesses. The afternoon was unforgettable and a fitting way to mark our longest reigning monarch’s birthday.” Of those attending, 68 guests were over the age of 90 and (undoubtedly the stars of the show), seven guests were aged over 100! School children from Hyde Park School in South Kensington turned into Flamenco Dancers for International Languages Week. Pupils donned their berets, dug out their maracas and indulged Whats On in and around W8 - I Kensington News II in the finest curries, paellas and spring rolls to celebrate and raise money for Refugee Support. Designed to champion the importance of other cultures and celebrate the numerous international and multi-lingual students at the school, students kicked off the week with a special themed assembly where they gave presentations about their countries and mother-languages, with some performing traditional songs and dances from their homelands. Lessons throughout the week were also themed around specific countries, with students creating their own passports, designing new flags and listening to presentations from parents on their home towns. The school also held a charity bake sale raising more than £300 for Refugee Support. The week ended in true style with students dressing in their finest global outfits and participating in flamenco performances and lessons. Wounded: Conflict, Casualties and Care Exhibition opens at the Science Museum. Timed to coincide with the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, the Wounded Exhibition illustrates some of the remarkable medical responses and innovations of the war through the personal stories of those who were wounded and those who cared for them. Central to the exhibition will be many important objects from the Science Museum’s First World War medical collections. Beyond the battlefields, the exhibition will also focus on the impact of the war on the millions who were left physically and mentally affected, and illustrate how the medical lessons learnt during the First World War still have relevance today. www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/wounded St Philips Church in the Earls Court Road are currently recruiting a Children’s Ministry Leader and Community Worker. St Philip’s believe that the way children are taught the Christian faith when they are young, will give them the tools necessary for their growth in faith for the rest of their lives. The position of Community Worker involves developing and implementing a new community engagement programme which focuses on intergenerational relationships. It is a one day a week position. To find out more about both these posts, please see www.specr.org/category/recruitment. If interested, please forward your CV to [email protected] In Chelsea, the celebration of the Queen’s birthday took a slightly more different form: Local residents and business ‘Pet Pavilion’ hosted the first ever dog street party on Park Walk (referred to for the event as “Bark Walk”), fit for a royal pooch. There was a live Dog Disco, for the dogs and their owners, performed by an international DJ and live saxophone player. Songs included ‘Who let the dogs out and “Hound Dog”. The best dancing dog won a ‘Best of British Doggy Hamper’ with a basket filled with high end, British made dog treats. There was also Dog Beer, a healthy dog drink made in Belgium, with beef and malt barley extracts as well as a Tonic Cocktail for dogs. Caolan Robertson, an organiser said: “The event went down so well and it was wonderful to see our community come together to create something so positive.” Proceeds from the event went to Battersea Dogs Home. Update on the Lancer Square Development: As many residents will be only too aware, demolition works have started at Lancer Square. This involves the removal of the roof slates and roof structures of the building. ‘Soft stripping’ has also taken place which includes the removal of all internal fixtures, fittings and furniture leaving only the frame of each building. The new scheme will provide: retail space; high quality office space, 51 new homes (including 14 affordable homes); publicly accessible gardens for the existing community and new residents; 32 underground parking spaces (new residents will not be eligible for local permits) and off-street servicing, removing the need for on-street bays. By Benedict Bull The beautiful Adelaide d’Orleans grown by David Austin Roses (Image by kind courtesy David Austin Roses) Is there a finer view than that of a rose to the side and above one's head? Each bloom pervading the air and its form suspended, nodding down in full view without requiring a stoop. I am a great advocate of pergolas, and like Jekyll, suggest these are best as substantial structures, 10 inch beams, 10 foot apart, if you have the luxury of space. If not, a post, pillar or obelisk is like a lighthouse for care worn beings, though not an estuary and harbour. Look at Adelaide d'Orleans. This was Lucy's favourite, here growing so generously on an arch inviting one inside. This is a very beautiful rambler rose and it is on the short list of 8 recommendations made by Michael Marriott of David Austin Roses of Shropshire; where the eponymous founder has been crossing and breeding and growing roses, and developing his very charming and persuasive forms of the English Rose for 75 years now. Adelaide d' Orleans is a rambling rose in the Sempervirens group with almost evergreen leaves, and with small pink buds that open to translucent semi-double flowers. These fade 18 delightfully from creamy pink to creamy white. It has a delicate primrose scent. Lax growth makes it ideal for arches and pergolas, and it is very beautiful elegant and healthy, growing up to 20 feet. It was bred by Jacques in 1826. It is such a generous rose, but all the rambling and climbing English roses are generous and this is in great part due to their vigour and strong but free habit. I love the Italian word for them, rampicante; it captures their zest for life, all the qualities and a naturalness with it. These are my favourite roses. I confess I am biased but informed. Bathsheba is a new climbing English rose this year. Long elegant apricot yellow buds open to classic shallow cupped rosettes, each about 4 inches across, filled with many tightly packed petals. On the upper side of the petals a subtle pink apricot pertains, while on the under-side a softer yellow, giving a rich apricot radiance, all ensconced within creamy white ring of outer petals of each bloom, making a halo effect. The nose is myrrh and honey and as the flower ages the fragrance develops an element of tea. It is a healthy vigorous climber with good repeat flowering and an attractive mid green foliage. Bathsheba is a climbing rose in the Leander group, that is it is from a shrub rose family. And this is a key point, these rose groupings are essentially morphological, that is the nomenclature is used to describe the attributes of each plant and each plant group based on similarities of form. This is the time to admire the roses; there are superb collections in the corner of Hyde Park by Number One London and in Regent's Park in the Inner Circle on the Baker Street segment. For further information on climbing roses please contact [email protected] or send your queries here too. www.davidaustinroses.co.uk These very boundaries are the ones that have been and are being broken down by cross pollination and the very abundant forms of the rose that manifest. By deliberate hybrid crosses, at the same time as that their excellent parts are enhanced, such as repeat flowering, fragrance, vigour, lax growth so the rose transcends its historical group. Only familiarity with the roses themselves will make full sense of the groupings, but David Austin's work as a breeder of roses reveals it all to the eye and the nose and the brain catches up much easier here than in these words. Dressed in pale blue and looking strikingly similar to the Queen at a young age, she enchanted the men in scarlet and showed her mother's knack for sharing a quick joke with all she met. Princess Anne wore an Oak Leaf - symbolic of the tree King Charles II hid behind, in order to avoid capture by the Parliamentary forces in 1661 at the Battle of Worcester. 'Oak Apple Day' as Founder's Day is also known, is held on a day closest to King Charles II birthday (29th May) and the date of his restoration as King in 1660. Those attending the parade represented many of the British corps, rejiments and military charities of which HRH The Princess Royal is Colonel in Chief, Colonel or Patron. 20 Images: Lucy Elliott Photography (For more images please see www.blog.thekensingtonmagazine.com) 21 The Kensington Crossword Compiled by Dave Saunders Pit your wits against our Kensington-centric crossword.
