Habitat NCC teams up with other
community and non-profit groups
to revitalize the Eastside
The 800 block of Church St. in the Eastside neighborhood, pictured here, is one section slated to be
revitalized through The Eastside Rising Project.
Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County has entered into a
partnership over the next 6-7 years with numerous local community
organizations to build and rehabilitate 125 homes on the Eastside of
Wilmington. The coalition, dubbed the Eastside Rising Initiative,
seeks to enhance the Eastside of Wilmington through housing
revitalization as well as economic and workforce development.
(ABWK) is Habitat’s house-preservation initiative that
focuses on minor home repairs or improvements including,
window and door replacement, roof and gutter repair, sidewalk
work, porch railings, landscaping and insulation to name a few.

Board President
Kevin L. Smith Chief
Executive Officer
We welcome you to this latest edition of Habitat for
Humanity of New Castle County’s Community Builder
newsletter. At Habitat we’ve been busy with many
projects, such as the very successful Art Auction
held in March, President’s Dinner in April, Eastside
Rising project and the Simonds Gardens ABWK
project. As always, our primary focus is on helping
low-income families buy their first home through our
homeownership program. And as you will notice on
page 4, 2013 was a great year for many families.
Looking ahead into 2014 and 2015, we are excited
by the opportunities to continue our neighborhood
revitalization work in the Northeast and Eastside of
Wilmington and Middletown, as well as developing
our partnerships with homeowners, volunteers and
donors, and growing the sales and net income of the
ReStore. We hope you will continue your support of
Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County through
donating your time and money, as well as materials
to the ReStore in Prices Corner. We need your help
in spreading the word about the impact that Habitat
for Humanity is making in the lives of families and
in neighborhoods around
New Castle County.
Since 1986, Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County has built more than 200
homes in areas throughout New Castle County.

ReStore sales explode in new location,
operating hours in Prices Corner extended
The Habitat for Humanity of
New Castle County ReStore
opened in 2004 at the
warehouse attached to the
Hutton Street office and in 2008
moved to a 10,000-squarefoot location in New Castle.
With the need for more
visibility and room to expand,
the ReStore moved to a
30,000-square-foot building in
Prices Corner in November of
2012, where it did $26,000 in
sales the first weekend.
The store ended 2013 with
more than $625,000 in sales.
“Our new location helped us
double our sales and we are
planning to double sales again
to $1.2 million
in another four
years,”
said
Joe
Robertson,
R e S t o r e
Manager.
In January
the
ReStore
extended
its
hours
and
is now open
Tuesday-Saturday 9a.m.-4 p.m.
The ReStore is a non-profit
business venture supporting the
community through the resale
of new and gently used home
improvement
merchandise,
donated by manufacturers,
stores,
contractors
and
individuals. These items are
sold to the public at a discount
of 50%-90% off of retail prices.
Sales proceeds benefit
Habitat for Humanity’s building
operations.
ReStore receives largest donation ever from Buccini Pollin,
Sales from monumental gift top $100,000
Wilmington-based developer,
owner and management
company The Buccini/Pollin
Group, Inc. (BPG), owner
of The Residences at City
Center, donated over 745
pieces of furniture to the
Habitat for Humanity of New
Castle
County
ReStore.
The Residences at City Center
offer fully furnished, extendedstay studio, one bedroom and
two bedroom accommodations.
The furniture was being stored
at 1105 Delaware Avenue,
another one of The Buccini/
Pollin
Group’s
properties.
The Residences at City Center
had been going through
a renovation process and
Tamara
Holt,
property
manager wanted the furniture
to go to a good cause.
“A lot of the furniture was
barely used and some is
even brand-new,” she said.
“All of it is extremely sturdy
and well-made as it is built to
last for the hotel industry. It
is a great feeling to know all
of it is going to be utilized.”
ReStore
Manager
Joe
Robertson said the ReStore has
never experienced a donation
of this size and quality that
continues to bring customers
from all over.
“This has truly been an amazing
gift that continues to benefit the
ReStore because the items are
still coming in,” he said. “It’s
also been a major attractor of
customers because when they
hear we’ve got Buccini/Pollin
furniture on the floor, it doesn’t
stay there for more than a day.”
“Our new location helped us double our sales and we are planning to double sales
again to $1.2 million in another four years.”

More Habitat partner families go to settlement
Join us in congratulating our
latest Habitat partner families to
reach settlement, Leslie and Bill
Hoehn, and Lashanda Cohen.
Both families were chosen
to become first-time homeowners
after an extensive screening
process
that
includes
employment,
housing,
and credit checks, as well
as in-home interviews.
After working the required
225 hours to help build
their home and attending
financial counseling and
homeownership-based
training, Cohen and the
Hoehns signed settlement
documents
and
were
handed the keys to their homes.
Habitat for Humanity of New
Castle County continues to
seek partner families to join
our growing community of new
homeowners.
We’re inviting interested
families to join us at one of our
many home ownership seminars
to be held throughout 2014.
At the seminars, families and
individuals will learn about firsttime home ownership and
how Habitat’s program works
to get qualified families into
affordable housing.
If you or you know
someone who would like
to learn more about home
ownership visit http://www.

As part of the program, partner family
members and Habitat staffers teamed
up to make the presentations as they
respectively shared how the organization
has impacted their lives and the
successes the different departments of
organization continues to see.
The crowd was particularly moved by
prospective homeowner Tyrah Lusby.
Lusby gave an emotional testimony
about how Habitat NCC is giving her a
sense of pride in the neighborhood as
well as the opportunity to create roots in
the same community in which she grew
up as she presenter.
The award recipients were equally
inspiring with many reflecting on the
ways their contributions to Habitat has
impacted them personally.
After the awards portion of the
program, incoming board president,
Noreen Poole, recognized transitioning
board members with gift presentations
and introduced new board members.
It was a beautiful event where
volunteers, donors, staff, and homeowners
sat side-by-side and celebrated the past
year’s accomplishments, and those who
were instrumental in furthering Habitat’s
mission.
