Volume10 Number1 2012 February Thank you. ~ Michael JacksonChamber.org I magine if we could create a unified vision of where we want Jackson to be in about 10 years. Jackson 2020 is a community-wide process by which we work together, solving community issues over a long period of time! During this process, we hope to find new ways to align resources, collaborate and have a collective impact resulting in a stronger and more vibrant community. We successfully did this before in the early 1980s when Bob Carlton and hundreds of community citizens engaged in a process called Jackson 1990 and it is time to put the process into action again. Collaboration fosters successes bigger than any of us could achieve on our own. Communication is a key element too. I have seen the power of collaboration and communication between the United Way and the Jackson Community Foundation resulting in creativity, alignment of goals and better funding decisions. We had many conversations about how much more impactful we could be with more partners from more community sectors participating in the same process. The thing is, we have had the same conversation over and over again with other community leaders and these conversations eventually led us to the desire to collaborate on creating a unified vision for our community that we could all see ourselves, our organizations and our businesses having a role in and commitment to achieving together. Our goal is to find consensus, share tasks, and build on our assets. Suzanne Morse, author of Smart Communities: How Citizens and Local Leaders Can Use Strategic Thinking to Build a Brighter Future, explained when 6, h he end, and beginning, of every year is good for a number of things. I like this time to reminisce about the past and contemplate the future. A couple of months ago I pondered the speech delivered to the community at the Chamber’s Annual Dinner. My message was simple - I think we need more “unity” in our community. I define unity by these five basic tenets. The U is having an unwavering commitment to excellence in everything one commits to do. If you can’t, don’t do it. The N stands for a new norm that makes it unacceptable to denigrate this community until one has personally demonstrated a willingness to make a positive change. The I is for integration - making “We’re Better Together” more than just a slogan. The T reminds us to simply say thank you more often. And finally, the Y stands for youth. Our future is the youth of this community. As we go forward in 2012 let us all try to instill more unity in our community! t igh tl T So what is Jackson 2020 anyway? Member S po arc Tuesday, M Chairman’s Letter Jackson County Chamber of Commerce The Unity in Community Chamber in Action Legislative Action Center & Employers Guide to Health Care 20 12 -$ rs o e p 20 per n she was here in November how great Jackson already is and can be. She talked about how successful communities practiced Democracy and built upon their assets. We have identified assets in seven areas and established workgroups including: health and well being, education, community safety, community and social support, government efficiency and effectiveness, cultural and recreational opportunities and economic and workforce development. Another goal is to engage people who aren’t usually at community convening events, who understand different parts of the community, who have just never been asked to serve and participate. We need to engage youth, neighborhood organizations, urban and rural citizens, corporations, small business and nonprofit organizations together. Jackson 2020 is not about creating a new plan, or criticizing others’ plans. Jackson 2020 is about creating a community vision, breaking down silos and challenging all community groups to plan bigger, better, smarter and together. When we are doing our planning in our own businesses and organizations, we need know what other partners are doing, what other resources we can leverage and how what we are doing connects to make the whole community stronger. Inspiration also comes to me when I see others setting the example of leadership on a daily basis. Within the Chamber membership we have wonderful examples of visionary leadership, such as: • Those who have stepped up to serve on the Chamber boards and committees, it is their passions and vision that fuel the mission of our organization. • Those who volunteer their time and energy to support fellow businessmen and women in the Jackson Retail Success Academy™ program and the Leadership Academy. • Businesses that continue to find ways to grow and invest in Jackson. • Those who volunteer and work with children to empower them. • Young professionals who see the potential and invest themselves in our community. • Our elected officials, stepping into the public arena because they believe in the process. Every one of us can be a leader that inspires others. There is much to accomplish in our community and our future requires that everyone play a part. Call the Jackson 2020 leadership to see what role you ck can play or to be an a part of the vision. Kriss Giannetti 517841-2148 Fr here is no such thing as a leader who has no vision.” says John Maxwell, “It’s a given that all leaders have something they want to accomplish. However, the success of the leader is not dependent upon their vision but rather if they can transfer the vision from ‘me’ to ‘we’. Then everyone can climb the mountain together.” What is a vision? It is not as mystical as it sounds. A vision, quite simply, is a picture of what success will be at a particular time in the future. It encompasses answers to an array of questions: What does our community look like? How big is it? What are we famous for? How do people who live and work here feel about it? What is my role in it? A vision is reasonable and articulates where we are going. Then once the vision is set, we create the plan to accomplish it. A great vision is inspiring. It excites and motivates everyone involved to roll up their sleeves to work the plan. Our community has a long history of visionaries and inventors that forged new paths. When change came, our predecessors found a way to survive, working together to envision and grow a new future. Now, it is our turn. Again, change requires us to face new challenges, together. Within our community, leaders and citizens alike are beginning work to unify and align our collective visions and plans. It inspires me to see the courage of our people working to craft a collaborative vision of what Jackson can be in the year 2020. Through the conversations, trust is building and the vision is catching on. The site is a database of participating Jackson County manufacturers, searchable by capability, capacity and certification. But, unlike a baseball field, if you build a website, people don’t just come. So, we will launch a comprehensive multi-media marketing campaign, consisting of everything from Google Ad Words to trade shows to stickers on products….all of which will drive traffic to the website. We are working with JTV and Michigan International Speedway to build even more value to the program. This is a member benefit for Chamber and Jackson Area Manufacturer Association members. The Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Board wanted the Chamber to take an active role in the community revitalization and wanted to learn what primary programs and services were already in place. They did not want to duplicate what the local governments and community organizations were already doing. Using a process called systems mapping, I constructed a systems map of nearly eighty entities in our community. That systems/asset map was an extremely valuable tool in helping the Chamber establish additional business support programs. From that initiative was launched the Small Business Development center, the Leadership Academy, the Federal Procurement program, the Business Incubator, the Economic Club of Jackson, and the Jackson Alliance for Business Development in cooperation with City and County Governments. With Jackson 2020 underway, it makes sense to once again construct an asset map which describes the various activities and services presently offered in our community. A first draft was completed about a year ago describing seven specific community activity sectors. After visiting with about eighty community leaders, the seven sectors mapped included government, education, business, economic development, health care, arts and culture, and human services. Assisting with the project is the Chamber of Commerce, the Enterprise Group, the Jackson Community Foundation and Spring Arbor University. The updated asset map will be ready in early spring of 2012 and put on-line by Spring Arbor University for access by the entire community. Citizens and community leaders will be tasked with keeping this systems map current as the n to tool quickly looses value when the information is out of date. Stay informed for how you can play in a role in this exciting endeavor. bY Bob Ca rl M A Jackson Asset Map JacksonChamber.org Power Points from Peers Power Points from Peers A new feature for the 2012 Chamber News is ‘Power Points from Peers’, a series of short articles sharing best business practices, recommendations and lessons learned from various Chamber member businesses - your peers. This month we hear from Ambs Call Center and Springbrook Meadows Apartments. The ULTIMATE QUESTION R ecently Ambs Call Center implemented a quarterly customer survey that is sent via email which provides us with a service quality ranking known as ‘Net Promoter Score’. We learned of this measurement tool at a recent strategic planning session with Verne Harnish, author of ‘Mastering the Rockefeller Habits’, a book that I highly recommend. There are only two questions on the survey which helps with the response rate. The questions are simply as follows: 1) On a scale from 0 to 10, how likely are you to refer Ambs Call Center to a friend or colleague? 2) Please share with us any comments regarding your rating. The survey allows us to categorize how well we are doing in our customers’ eyes. In a 24/7 call center environment like ours, customer service is as they say ‘a journey not a destination’ so we thrive on working to constantly improve service to our customers. The Net Promoter Score was developed by Richard Owen and Laura Brooks and is discussed in greater detail in their book ‘Answering the ULTIMATE QUESTION’. The Net Promoter Scoring is as follows: • Promoters (score 9-10) which are customers who are completely satisfied and will refer others, fueling growth. • Passives (score 7-8) are satisfied but unenthusiastic customers who are vulnerable to competitive offerings. • Detractors (score 0-6) are unhappy customers who can damage your brand and impede growth through negative word-of-mouth. To calculate the NPS, take the percentage of customers who are Promoters and subtract the percentage who are Detractors. We take feedback and follow up with each client personally. We enjoy using the NPS over previous surveys because it offers us near real-time actionable data. In the past we used a 30 question survey that had an extremely poor response simply because of the amount of time it took to complete the survey. The NPS is a quick snap shot that gives us what we need to know so that we can continue to deliver excellent quality of service to our customers. Contributor: Aaron Boatin, President, Ambs Call Center JacksonChamber.org The Benefits of Upgrading Your Property H ave you ever considered making upgrades to improve your facility, and found the thought of the financial investment, not to mention the time commitment, too daunting? Springbrook Meadows apartment complex recently completed extensive upgrades in an effort to create a better living environment for current and potential residents. Property manager Valerie Lockwood shares information about the upgrades and how they have improved business. “We’ve made external and internal improvements to the complex for both aesthetic and functional reasons,” says Lockwood. “Externally, we’ve repaired the sidewalks, repaired and seal coated the parking lots, installed new entry doors, added rubber mulch to the playground, and increased the amount of sand in our volleyball court.” Internal improvements include new tile and carpet in the entry hallways and a remodeled leasing office. “The office has been repainted and refurnished to create a more inviting environment for our current and potential residents,” Lockwood says. The building upgrades, funded by the Gillespie Group, which owns Springbrook Meadows Apartments as well as Gallery Place and Victoria Pointe apartment complexes in Jackson. “We started the project in September and the upgrades were completed by mid-October,” says Lockwood. “Our residents are very happy with the outcome and we are thankful to them for their understanding and patience while we made the changes.” Since completing the upgrades, Springbrook Meadows, located on Springport Road, has experienced a lower turnover rate with fewer residents moving out. The apartment complex has had an occupancy rate of 95% since the renovations were completed. “We haven’t offered any higher discounts than we’ve offered in previous years,” Lockwood says. “This shows us that people are willing to pay a little more for a nicer place to live.” Writer: Lindsey Edwards, External Communications Specialist, Gerdau Special Steel North America February 2012 Chamber News 5 CAlendar Jackson County Chamber of Commerce To Register: Unless otherwise noted, R.S.V.P. for events to Mary at [email protected] or 517-782-8221 (please have your credit card information handy when you call). However, the sheer amount of communication avenues available today make it easy for your voice to get lost in a sea of blogs, forums and message boards. To turn up the volume so that our voices cannot be ignored, the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce has created a website, www. feedback.JacksonChamber.org, that will act as our direct link to all elected officials who have an influence on life in Jackson County. This legislative action center includes succinct information regarding legislative issues relevant to business in Jackson County. Each issue is summarized in an easy to understand synopsis, and has both “for” and “against” arguments displayed. Registered users are invited to voice their opinion on the issue by voting that they “favor,” “oppose” or are “uncertain,” and eventually, they will be able to expand upon their vote with a comment board. The site allows users to easily contact government representatives or organizations involved with any particular issue. Users can add their names to electronically prepared letters/petitions and e-mail them, or they can print them to fill out and mail by hand. Letters and petitions can also be drafted on the site, which can then be addressed to any elected official representing Jackson County residents at all levels of government. The issues propagated in every level of government affect all individuals, businesses and communities across Jackson County. This website is one more tool that helps the Chamber turn up the volume to assure that all businesses are heard.
