President’s Remarks
John M. Knevel
This issue of Buck Fax is known
as the Annual Awards Edition. It
marks the end of the 29th annual
big game scoring period for official
entry in CBM’s Big Game Records
of Michigan.
This issue lists all of the hunter taken
deer, bear, elk and turkey that measured
high enough to qualify for the Michigan
record book during the 2009 seasons.
Several of the high lights of this past
year include a new #1 typical elk along
with many new records in the various
awards categories. The recent changes
in the crossbow regulations created new
hunting opportunities and have resulted in many new record book entries and
awards in that category.
This past year also saw the addition of another hunter, Dawn Pratt to
the exclusive list of persons who have
achieved the Michigan Grand Slam
Award by taking a buck, a bear, a turkey
and ultimately an elk that each qualified
for entry into the CBM records.
Congratulations to all of the successful
hunters who took a buck, bear, bull or
tom that made the record book. Taking
a trophy that makes “the book” is a
tribute to both the animal and the
hunter. It validates fair chase hunting.
It proves hunting is a necessary and
effective method of wildlife management and that hunting is an important
traditional recreational activity that also
provides an important source of meat
on the family dinner table.
CBM records indicate we’re living in
the “good old days” of Michigan big
game hunting. As we say around our
deer camp … “Huntin’ is Pretty Good
and Gettin’ Gooder.”
CBM has had a busy year. A special
thanks goes out to all of the board
members, project chairmen, official
measurers, staff and volunteers. Without them, CBM would not exist. From
an operational standpoint like everyone
else in Michigan we’ve had to tighten
our belts. Fortunately we have been
able to avoid raising our membership/
entry fee. CBM is also upgrading our
computer system for both the records
data base as well as for the business
operations of the organization. This has
been an expensive, slow, and frustrating struggle. (For some reason finding
a computer geek who is also geeked
on hunting is harder than drawing a
Michigan elk tag.)
Another major focus is revising our
web site. The goal is to make it the goto-site for all things regarding Michigan
big game hunting. Check out
www.buckfax.com to see the latest.
None of this is free. CBM gets no
public funding. The best way to support CBM is to renew your membership, purchase record books, attend our
fund raising banquets and enter your
trophies.
In addition to recognizing the best
of the best trophies from 2009 CBM
also wants to recognize several special
persons who have always gone above
and beyond to help the organization. I
am pleased to announce that the Board
of Directors has authorized the following awards:
Honorary Life Members
(CBM’s Highest Award)
John Ohmer and Richard Wilt
John Ohmer is awarded a Honorary
Life Membership in recognition for his
many years of continuous service as
an official measurer, trainer, volunteer,
regional director and board member.
John has measured and entered more
trophies into the records and signed up
more new members than anyone else in
CBM ever.
Richard Wilt is awarded a Honorary Life Membership in recognition for
his many years of continuous service
as a volunteer, official measurer, board
member, past president and mentor
of new leaders. Richard has recruited
many new members and measurers
and continually steps-in to help with
committees and special projects.
The Jack Van Riper Award
(CBM’s Distinguished Service Award)
Terry Kemp
The Jack Van Riper Award honors a CBM member who has a long,
dedicated and distinguished record of
service to CBM in activities other than
measuring. Terry Kemp is awarded the
Jack Van Riper Award in recognition
for his continuous service to CBM since
the organization’s founding. Terry is
an Honorary Life Member, an official
measurer, board member and CBM’s
record book publisher. For nearly 30
years he has served on committees and
volunteered for special projects that
have helped pave the way for CBM to
be designated the official record keeper
of Michigan big game records.
CBM Measurer of the Year
(Annual Distinguished Measurer Award)
Duane Temple
Duane Temple is awarded the CBM
Measurer of the Year award in recognition for the dedication, professionalism, accuracy, consistency, ethics and
integrity he continually brings to the
measuring and entry of trophies into
the official record book. Duane has
given many years of service to CBM as
an official measurer, volunteer, regional
scoring director, panel measurer and
board member and has earned the
respect of all of his peers.
On behalf of the general membership and the board of directors I want
to express our warmest congratulations all of the hunters who made the
record book for 2009, this year’s trophy
category award winners and to John,
Richard, Terry and Duane our special
award winners.
Hunting season is just around the
corner. Be safe, take a kid hunting and
in the words of our late friend and
colleague Jack Van Riper… “Take One
for the Book”.

I Shot a Big Buck! (Bear, Elk or Turkey)
Now What?
Good Question!
You’ve come to the right place. CBM measures,
records and maintains the official records of
Michigan’s trophy deer, bear, elk and turkeys.
MEASURING IS FREE! Most hunters aren’t sure if their
newly harvested animal is trophy class or not. They know
it’s big but how big is it in terms of scoring? The answer is,
to get it measured for FREE and then you’ll know.
Deer and Elk Know-How
First thing to know is the drying period. Antlers on deer
and elk along with cleaned skulls of bear require a 60 day
drying period before they can be officially measured. (A
minimal amount of shrinkage takes place during this time)
Make sure you maintain the skull plate on deer and elk —
that’s the skull bone connecting the antlers.
CBM uses the Boone and Crockett scoring system which
in general uses length, width and thickness of the rack along
with symmetry to come up with a score. Therefore, a rack
that is long, wide, thick and pretty even on both sides will
score the highest in the typical category. Non-typical racks
involve irregular antler configurations. For bear scoring is
done by adding lenght and width of skull
Let’s Talk Turkey
Turkeys are a little different. CBM uses a measuring
system that combines the length of the beard and the length
of both spurs to come up with a CBM score. There is no
drying time required for turkeys.
After official entry, the hunter will receive a certificate
suitable for framing and the entry will appear in Buck Fax
Magazine and well as the next publication of Michigan Big
Game Records which comes out about every three years. The
entry will now become part of the state’s permanent records.
Some people say, “I don’t care if it’s in the record book, I
know how big it is.” The advantage of having your trophy
recorded in the permanent records is that long after you are
gone there may be some children, grandchildren or great
grandchildren that can point to the book and say, “Great
grandpa got one back in ‘08 that made the record book!”
Buy the Book
The final piece to the puzzle is to buy the book. The 8th
edition of CBM’s “Michigan Big Game Records” is currently
available at www.michiganbiggamerecords.com or you can
save credit card fees by sending a check or money order to:
Willoughby Press

Make check out to:
Willoughby Press
Soft Cover $32.00
Hard Cover $45.00
Make it Official
Next contact an official CBM measurer. Many people can
measure but only CBM trained and certified measurers can
enter scores into the record book. Any official measurer in
the state can measure your trophy. Usually it’s best to get
one close to where you live. Another option is to bring it to
the Michigan Deer and Turkey Spectacular held in February
in Lansing. There are contest fees involved when you do it
this way but you gain admission to the show for the whole
weekend.
After your trophy has been measured and it qualifies
for entry into CBM records you will go through the entry
process. The fee for entry is $25.00 and you have the option
of allocating that money to a one year membership, in which
case record book entry is free. (Most people choose this
option because all entries are free for members as part of
their membership.)

It’s a Michigan
By Dawn Adlen-Pratt
Grand Slam!
I have been hunting for over 25
years and have enjoyed every
minute of my time spent in the
woods. Along with the great
experiences of every adventure,
I have been fortunate to take
some record book animals along
the way.
In 1996, it was a record book turkey
that ranked #1 at the time for Crawford
County. In 1997, it was a record book
bear that was the first entry ever for
a woman, taken with a bow. Then in
1998, a record book 17-point whitetail
that ranked the second largest whitetail
taken by a woman with a bow at that
time. Wow, I was on a roll; what could
be next?
The only animal that I did not have
in the book was a Michigan elk. It is
the tag that every passionate hunter
salivates for, but never expects to draw.
I thought I might just as well forget
the ultimate dream of achieving the
Michigan Grand Slam because year
after year I apply, and year after year I
am unsuccessful.
Luck of the Draw
Then it happened. I received a package from the DNR advising me that I
had drawn a once in a lifetime either
sex elk tag for the December 2009 hunt.
I couldn’t believe it. It must have been
a mistake of some sort – but it wasn’t. I
was going elk hunting and I aimed to
set the bar high – nothing less than a
bull that would make the record book
to give me a Grand Slam. After all, this
was my once in a lifetime chance.
I began to review the list of guides
in my packet and called several of them
to get a feel for their hunting style and
availability. I really wanted to make a
hunt out of this. If possible a little stalking and sneaking, all the good stuff that
gets your heart pumping so hard you
can’t stand it. Most of them had limited
space as others had already booked
their spots.

CBM Score: 291-7/8
Preparing for the Hunt
I then contacted a guide that still
had some availability during my hunt
period. I told him what I was looking
for and we hit it off immediately. We
talked for over an hour about every type
of hunting you could imagine; this guy
was a hunting fool and likes to do it
right. He is selective and honest about
what you should expect on the hunt. I
knew then that I had found my guide.
We talked about all the preparation
that was needed prior to the hunt. I told
him that I knew how to prepare for a
hunt but I wanted him to tell me exactly
what he expects from his hunters and
what type of “pitfalls” he had experienced with elk hunters in the past.
My guide said one of the most
important things that the hunter needs
to know is their capability to shoot at a
before we could identify a shooter bull in the pack.
The first day was coming to an end absent much
excitement. I asked the guide if we could get out
and take one last walk instead of driving so we
parked and walked some ridges that the guide
had recently seen some elk in. We came across a
couple of fresh beds and tracks but no sight of any
elk. The evening was coming to an end and they
were calling for a dandy of a blizzard for the next
two days. Things weren’t looking good.
On Wednesday, the blizzard had started and
you couldn’t even see to shoot at first light. It was
expected to last for two to three days. We did a
lot of driving and visibility was minimal on and
off most of the day. Needless to say, there wasn’t
anything moving. Chad said he had seen the elk
hold up for days in weather like this. Without any
fresh tracks, the only way we were going to see elk
was to sneak through some ridges and find them
bedded.
The snow was deep and I am not very tall, but
I asked Chad to park the truck so we could get out
and start looking. I was determined to find some
elk and not just wait out the storm. We headed
CBM Score: 13-12/16
particular distance. He said that most
of the time shots are usually within 100
yards because of the terrain. However,
there could be an occasion where a
300-yard shot may present itself and
only the hunter can determine whether
they are capable of making that shot. I
agreed and told him that I had planned
on practicing at 100, 200, and 300 yards.
In October I began shooting approximately 30-40 rounds through my .270
Weatherby at the various distances. I
practiced using a rest, a shooting stick,
and free handed at each distance. By
the time December rolled around I was
extremely confident that I could pull
off a fatal shot up to 300 yards. I was
ready and the time had come to go find
my elk.
The Hunt Is On
My hunt began on Tuesday and
things started off pretty slow. We did
a lot of driving and looking and I was
getting a bit restless. We ended up
getting out and walking some ridges
and were able to cut tracks of a couple
groups of elk. We were able to get a
glimpse of one group, but they bolted

“Michigan Grand Slam” Becomes Official
The Michigan Grand Slam is a term
that has been used informally for a long
time in Michigan. It refers to the entry into
the record book of the four Michigan animals that CBM recognizes as trophies by a
single hunter. Those four animals are deer,
bear, elk and turkeys.
The accomplishment has always been
considered so rare that it has remained
informal. The added challenge of drawing
a limited bear and particularly a bull elk
tag and to harvest animals that make the
record book minimums seemed
insurmountable. But it miraculosly has
been done by a select few.
The Commemorative Bucks of Michigan
Board of Directors has decided to establish
the Michigan Grand Slam as an officially
recognized category from hence forward.
It will be listed in chronological order of
completion by the hunter as opposed to a
high score because of the combination of
different scores involved.
The Michigan Grand Slam will remain
the most elusive category because of the
elk. The statistical odds of drawing an elk
permit, let alone an ‘any elk’ (bull or cow)
permit and successfully harvesting a bull
that makes CBM’s minimums seems
insurmountable.
Add to that, the drawing of a bear
permit and shooting a ‘book’ bear. Plus
taking a ‘book’ turkey and deer.
The feat is tough but as Dawn and
others have shown, not statistically
impossible!

out on foot through the blowing snow.
The snow was deep and the ridges were
steep making it hard to get around. The
first set of ridges that we walked did
not have any elk on them. We did see
six nice bucks, one of which was breading a doe.
After that walk we decided to head
over and walk the ridges where we saw
the two beds the evening before. Chad
had seen two bulls frequenting that area
during the past week. We started still
hunting along the ridges with the wind
in our favor.
After about 45 minutes we spotted
an elk bedded on the ridge across from
us. The elk had its head down and was
about 400 yards away. With the snow it
was hard to tell if it was a cow or a bull.
We took our time and scanned the area
for more elk. Moving a little closer to get
a better look we spotted a second elk.
They were both bedded in some thick
brush. We were finally able to identify
that they were both bulls, however their
antlers looked small and spindly,
10
possibly 5x5’s that would never
make the book.
We kept sneaking closer and closer.
The first elk stood and started to feed
down the ridge towards us. At that
point the snow had fallen off his antlers
and we decided he was a bit bigger
than we had first thought. We kept
watching the bull trying to determine
whether or not he would score at least
240 and we just couldn’t be sure at that
point. As he got to about 150 yards,
I decided to prepare for the shot as it
became obvious that this was a nice bull
and he would score well.
As I steadied my gun on a tree, the
wind swirled and the elk turned and
started to head back up the ridge. The
other elk stood and they both started
zig-zagging their way to the top of the
ridge on alert. I tried to get on the first
bull two or three times but each time he
had stopped there was a tree blocking
his vitals. Then I heard, “he’s going to
the right and he’s headed for that small
opening.”
They were on the move and I was
running out of time. I was sitting on
my butt like turkey hunting to steady
the gun on my knees, but I couldn’t
find the elk through the trees. He
grabbed me and pulled me over about
four feet. Then I could see the bull and
the opening he was headed for. I put
the gun up and he stopped perfectly in
an opening presenting approximately a
200-yard clear shot of his front shoulder.
She Shoots, She Scores
As I looked through my new Zeiss
Conquest scope, (I love this scope), I
squeezed the trigger of my .270 Weatherby which seemed to take forever to
go off. I hit the bull. He took a few
steps and went down, kicked a few
times and it was over. I hit him right in
the lungs - what a relief!
When we approached him we were
pleasantly surprised to see that he was
larger than we initially thought. A
beautiful huge bodied 6x6 dressing out
at 585 lbs. that green scored 298. What
an awesome feeling to be standing over
such a majestic animal!
The guide rolled up his sleeves to
field dress him, but I wasn’t going to
let that happen. After all this would be
the only time in my life I would have
an opportunity to field dress my own
Michigan Elk.
I won’t say this is a great “ending”
to my hunting career. But, I will say
that it very nicely completes a 12 year
chapter in my life that was focused on
nothing but hunting every free minute
of every day.
Grand Slam Honors
I now have a two year old, Autumn
(named after my favorite season), and
my hunting time will be a bit limited
for the next year or so until she is quiet
enough to join me in the woods.
Being the first gal to achieve a
Michigan Grand Slam is quite an honor.
These four animals are the only ones I
have in the book to date. Each one was
a phenomenal experience.
My first animal was my turkey. I
didn’t know much about turkey hunting and was surprised that it ended up
being the largest ever taken in Crawford
County at the time.
My bull elk ended up officially
scoring 291-7/8 with Commemorative
Bucks of Michigan, and was aged by
the DNR at 12 years old.
Dawn Adlen-Pratt has been an avid
hunter for over 20 years. She is the
Assistant Director of the Finance Department for Macomb County Community
Mental Health and resides in Clinton
Township with her two-year-old daughter,
Autumn. Dawn looks forward to the day
that she can take Autumn hunting and
nurture her evident interest in the great
outdoors.
The second was my bear. It was the
first time I had ever bear hunted. What
a unique learning experience and a hell
of a lot of work too! I really enjoyed the
bear. It was the first entry by a woman
with a bow and drew a great deal of
attention. It was very exciting and fun
sharing my story with so many people
and hunters that have the same passion
for the outdoors as I do.
The third animal was my 17-point
buck. Again another great experience.
And as they say, I saved the best for last.
I never thought I would have the
opportunity to complete the Michigan
Grand Slam because of the odds of
drawing an elk tag. It was quite an
honor to be selected for a Michigan Elk
hunt and to be successful in harvesting
such a magnificent bull.
CBM Score: 169-2/8 NT

2009 TURKEYS
by John L. Benedict
When it comes to calling, I am a minimalist. I often hunt
for hours without using a call, but on this day I put some
serious wear on my box call as well as the mouth call. When
the gobblers are responding to nearly every call, it’s easy to
overdo it. But the memories of these kinds of “unsuccessful”
days afield are as exciting as most successful hunts.
My newly acquired status of “retiree” did a great job of
opening up my calendar for weekday hunting and fishing.
I got out to the woods four out of the first five days of the
season. But the hens and jakes seemed to be the only birds to
appreciate my new status.
I did pass up a gobbler on day two, but his beard looked
to be less than six inches – too early in the season to take a
small bird. Even the most liberated of us have responsibilities, and mine caught up with me until May 16th, when two
friends and I spent the morning chatting up a roost full of
toms.
I began turkey hunting more than thirty-five years
ago while stationed in Virginia, and have continued as I was transferred around the country by the
Army, and then by my corporate employer. I’ve
taken gobblers in Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania,
Maryland, Montana, and Michigan.
I switched from shotgun to bow in 1993, and have only
used the bow since then. At times, turkey can be downright easy to shoot; but more often they are very difficult
to fool. Getting close enough to bring one down with an
arrow is normally a tough challenge.
Spring Season Brings Anticipation
Spring 2009 turkey hunting would not begin for me
until the late part of the season, when the toms would
likely be well educated. But, in past years Michigan’s late
season had been good to me.
My high expectations were alive and well on May 4th
when the local gobblers decided to talk to me for more
than three hours without ever coming within sight of
my impromptu blind. I hunted a piece of property near
Lapeer that now supported at least fifty turkeys, and had a
population that seemed to double every year.
24
Each of my buddies connected – one jake and one longbeard, but the biggest gobbler we saw gave us the slip.
This piece of land, near Deford in the thumb has produced
good birds for several years, so I returned on Monday and
Wednesday to try out some new decoys and reengage the big
gobbler we had seen.
It was a good plan, but I didn’t even get a glimpse of any
turkeys closer than 200 yards. Over the next two weeks I
hunted farms in Jackson, Hillsdale, Lenawee, Lapeer, and St.
Clair Counties. I saw some good birds, but could not coax
any close enough for a shot.
My last gasp for the season would be on May 31st back at
the opening day farm in northern Lapeer County. According to the landowner, there was a flock of twenty birds in his
field every day. I planned to slip into a blind that had been
cut out of a blown-down cottonwood right at the corner of
the field. I had used this spot earlier in the season, so I was
familiar enough with the ground to get in quietly in the dark.
I was settled in well before light, and at 5:30 I did an owl
hoot. There was an immediate response – from above my
head. And a minute later, a big gobbler glided into the field
and practically landed on my decoy. I had used that minute to get my bow into position, so when he hit the ground
I drew and put the twenty yard pin on his neck. He was
standing with his back to me when I released, and the bludgeon tip did its job.
The impact was at the junction of the neck and backbone,
so the tom was dead before it hit the ground. I paced the
distance at 20 steps, which is 18 yards – a relatively long shot
in my history of bow hunting turkeys. He was a good heavy
bird with a beard that was at least 10” and nice long spurs.
So the spring 2009 season turned out to be stereotypical
turkey hunting – hours and hours of hunting and calling and
excitement and frustration. Then one day a big gobbler falls
into your lap.
Fall of the Big Gobblers
Fall 2009 turned out to be a series of deer hunts where
the turkeys kept wandering into bow range at times when
I didn’t want to make the commotion of a shot. I passed on
decent toms on three different hunts in early October, and
then hit a stretch of several trips without any encounters
with turkeys.
For the past several years my early season whitetail hunting has yielded multiple opportunities to shoot at gobblers.
If the situation was right I would shoot, but most often there
were deer in the area or the timing for a commotion was bad.
So I have some nice pictures of mature birds and some great
memories of most of my turkey encounters while hunting
whitetail.
This year would test me beyond my limits. It was one of
those mornings when weather conditions could not be better
– light breeze, misty fog in the air from an all night drizzle,
dawn creeping up to reveal a sky dotted with feathery
clouds. I had planned to make my way to a blind I had cut
out of an oak that had fallen during the spring, but conditions were too good for still hunting. I would ease through
the woods from the northeast to a stream trail in the middle,
stay a while, and then slowly exit to the south. The wind
was right, and deer movement should be coming from crop
fields on the north and west of the woods.
At about 6:30, two gobblers showed up and the smaller of
the two crossed within ten yards of me. He had a 9-10 inch
beard, but was noticeably smaller in body size than the other
bird. After they passed out of sight, I continued to the trail
I had planned to watch. It was close to 11 o’clock when the
two toms showed-up again. They were generally following
the trail, headed back north with the smaller one between
me and the trail and the big one on the creek bank – I passed
again (it took a lot of restraint).
After they moved through, I had a few snacks and reflected on a morning adrenaline rushes – four bucks within
shooting range and one of them was a borderline shooter.
The one buck I had seen that was clearly a shooter didn’t
come in range. So I had seen a spike, two forkhorns, an eight
pointer, and an eleven with some stickers. Add in the gobblers, and you have a phenomenal morning.
After lunch I headed back from my morning spot the
same general direction I had come because of the change in
wind direction. Exiting the woods, I headed around and
crossed the stream to re-enter the woods near the southwest
corner. My intent was to find a stand near the stream again
and watch the trail on this side of the water.
By the time I found a good set-up, it was well into the
afternoon. I had seen some doe and a flock of hens on my
trek, but nothing with antlers or beards. Deer movement
would be starting in about an hour. I was visioning the big
buck from this morning stepping into my kill zone when I
heard movement behind me that was not a squirrel. I eased
my head around and saw the two toms headed toward me
from the field.
I took one step to put a tree between us, exchanged my
Rage-tipped arrow for a bludgeon headed arrow, and waited
for them to reappear. As they say: “Third time’s the charm”.
Three is one number higher than my restraint can handle.
The biggest bird was ten yards from me when he appeared. He must have walked a long way in the cover of
the tree, and was too close for me to draw unless he turned
away. Seconds seemed like minutes for the next several
breaths, but he finally turned.
I drew, heard the second turkey’s startled movement, and
released. I don’t even remember where the pin was, but the
big tom went head over spurs into the underbrush. I ran
over and rung his neck to end the flopping and kicking, but
I think the commotion was too much for the locals. I stayed
till dark and didn’t see another deer or turkey – but I’m not
complaining.
(Editor’s Note: John’s spring turkey scored 14-7/16 and was good
enough to place as the #2 in the All-Entries Archery category for
2009. By the time fall rolled around John had a birthday and his fall
turkey scored 13-12/16. Not only was it #1 in the Senior Archery
category but also set the All-Time Senior Archery record).John
also took the 2009 #1 Seniors Archery Typical whitetail scoring
151-5/8. To top the season off, John also shot the largest non-typical
whitetail taken in Michigan in 2009. It scores 202-0/8 NT setting
a new All-Time Seniors Archery Non-Typical Whitetail record and
qualifing for the Boone & Corckett records.”

My Three Year Journey
by Donald Blanchard
I’d been chasing this buck for three years. Finally, in 2009
I ended up getting him.
In the fall of 2007 I made a mock scrape and put a scouting camera
up on it. In late September of that year I got pictures of my buck. Not
only was it a nice buck then, but it had a volleyball net wrapped in its
antlers.
I hunted him hard all fall but with no sightings in the daylight. I
was still excited because I was getting trail cam pics of the buck at
night all the way through November and December.
In ‘08 I put up my trail cam in the same place and again made
my mock scrape. Again in September the buck made my scrape his.
I again got him on camera and it looked like he had gained a lot of
inches in antler. He was still mainly nocturnal but I hunted him hard.
I did get a sighting of him while hunting that year. He was breeding a
doe on Halloween night about 80 yards away. I never saw him again
in 2008 but did get lucky enough to find his right side shed antler so I
knew he was still around.
In early September of 2009 I was excited to say the least. I made
my mock scrape and put up my trail cam. Almost immediatley he
again took it over. I was getting lots of pictures but something was
completely different; this year 90% of the photos were during the
daylight hours.
I knew there was a good chance that this was my year to get
him. On October 1, I was all prepared to hunt but because of work I
couldn’t hunt in the morning.
I had to wait until the evening
to hunt. I hunted that night
with no sighting but I did pull
the chip from my camera. Sure
enough, at 8:30 that morning
he was at the mock scrape only
12 yards from my stand. I was
both excited and discouraged.
I hunted every chance I got
from then on with no sightings
until the morning of October 27.
My work got cancelled in the
morning so I went directly to
my stand. At 7:30 a nice 8 point
came by at about 5 yards away
but I passed him up.
At 8:00 that morning a lone doe came through and at about 8:30 I
finally saw him. He came directly to the scrape and was facing right at
me. When he got done working the scrape he walked off to my right.
26
It was now or nothing. He was standing at
about 18 yards away and was quartering hard
away from me. I drew. I shot and thought I had hit
him a little low. I started cussing myself as soon as
he started to run off.
He only ran 25 yards, stopped, looked back at
me and fell over dead. It was a perfect heart shot.
That’s when the shaking and stuttering started. I
tried calling some of my buddies that knew about
the deer. My fingers just wouldn’t work pads on
the phone.
After about a half hour I was able to climb out
of my tree stand. My buck weighed 225 lbs. dressed
and scored 179-0/8 gross and netted 174-3/8. It
was nearly a perfect 12 point.
I’ve already got my sights set on my next
buck. By early December he took over the same
mock scrape that the 12 point was using.

What CBM Means to Me by Roy Banaszak
It all started back in the early 1990’s when I
first heard about the Michigan Deer & Turkey
Spectacular to be held in Lansing. It was bitter
cold in February and I didn’t have anything scheduled
for that week-end so I called my hunting buddy, Len
Block, and we made plans to go to the show. WOW!!
I was amazed when we arrived and saw large deer
heads. What a beautiful display of trophy Michigan
deer heads.
In all my years of hunting I have yet to see a buck
like the ones on the wall while hunting. I must be
hunting in the wrong place.
I couldn’t believe how many people were at the
show. It was great walking around and talking with
some of the outfitters. Then I saw the CBM booth and
was very impressed. I talked to a couple of the guys
and they explained all about scoring and why we
keep records.
One of the men I talked to in great detail was Terry
Kemp. What a salesman. Terry told me all the details about
CBM and the benefits of becoming a member. He sold me a
one year membership, I received some tickets for their drawing and would receive 4 issues of Buck Fax magazine in the
course of the upcoming year. I was hooked.
It was in 1995 that I decided to become a Life Member of
CBM. I became the 152nd person to make the decision of lifetime support of the organization. I knew that by joining there
could become some involvement in the future. Boy, I had no
idea how much I would become involved.
I was like a kid in a candy store. I was excited and couldn’t
wait to tell all my friends. I was now part of a great organization that would require a lot of my Time, Energy, Dedication
and Integrity.
As a member of CBM I would be representing an organization that is recognized by the State of Michigan as the official
trophy record keeper of Michigan’s deer, bear, elk and turkeys.
Several years passed when finally my son Jerry and I attended the Michigan Deer and Turkey Spectacular together.
He couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw the giant display of
trophy deer heads. We decided then and there that attending
the show would become an annual affair. This to me was what
hunting and CBM were all about, enjoying and sharing the
experience.
In 1999 I surprised my son and bought him a life membership in CBM. He became the 289th person to become a life
member. Now there were life members from two generations
of the family.
Over time the people and faces have changed in the club.
We’ve seen several new presidents, vice presidents and board
30
members and yet CBM is still a great organization. Without
these changes, different views and ideas CBM would not be
what it is today. It was during this time I became an Official
Scorer and several years later a Board Member. For my family, CBM is keeping alive our hunting traditions by recording
Michigan trophies and where they are taken in Michigan.
During the time we were going to the shows my son got
married and had a son of his own named Glenn. At the early
age of two Glenn showed great interest in the deer his dad
got during that hunting season. At the age of four Glenn also
joined us for our annual trip to the Michigan Deer & Turkey
Spectacular.
I came up with the thought of surprising my son and
grandson with a life membership for Glenn. What a thrill it
would be to have three generations of life members. So, in
2003 my grandson Glenn became CBM life member #379. We
became the first family to have three generations of CBM life
members.
The hunting tradition in our family will continue thanks to
CBM. Hopefully, CBM will continue to grow and mature as
more and more hunters see the benefits of belonging to CBM.
Surely there will be many more challenges ahead for our
club, but this is where my loyalty, dedication and hard work
come into play. I believe every hunter that is exposed to what
CBM is all about should give some thought to joining and
supporting what CBM does.
CBM is all about hunting and hunters and I sincerely hope
my contributions will help move the organization forward.
As sportsmen and hunters it is important that we carry on the
traditions for generations to come.
Humane Society of the United States’
Deception Called Out By Jennifer Vincent
The following article originally appeared in the
June 2010 issue of “Michigan Farmer” and is
reprinted here with permission. We believe the
article captures and clarifies what HSUS is and
where their money goes.
Thank You Jennifer and “Michigan Farmer”!

How much is one-half of 1%?
Well, if you have 12 lollipops, you might get a few licks. In a
can of soda, it’s the last sip that swirls around the top of the can.
If someone handed you a crisp $100 bill, your take would be two
quarters.
The bigger the pie, the larger the slice, but it’s all relevant. It’s
still just one-half of 1%.
A few months ago the nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom, or CCF, uncovered that the Humane Society of the United
States contributed less than one-half of 1% of its budget to dog
and cat shelters.
Most of us in agriculture have come to recognize HSUS for
what it is — an animal activist group opposed to animal agriculture, hunting and, ultimately, the human consumption of meat.
But many donors who want to help underfunded local animal
shelters have been duped in grand fashion. Not only has their
philanthropy not benefited the intended recipients, but also it
has been redirected into a lobby effort that could threaten food
prices and availability.
By name association, and by its many plea-filled commercials and fund-raising tools that feature abused, neglected and
abandoned domestic critters, HSUS recorded just shy of $100
million in fund-raising in 2008. Local shelters’ take on that was
$450,000.
However, HSUS doled out more than $30 million in plush
salaries, $24 million in fund-raising and more than $2.5 million
into the executive pension plan. This group also threw $2.25 million at the animal welfare ballot initiative in California to be able
to dictate animal housing requirements for pigs, veal calves and
hens. It won. It was about to do the same in Michigan this fall,
but instead it was able to hog-tie industry leaders with threats
of an ugly and costly ballot campaign. Backed into a corner, and
with public perception of animal agriculture waning, industry
leaders conceded to HSUS demands with a few loopholes that
were not privy to our friends on the West coast.
The dog watchers need a watchdog
If HSUS is left unchecked, it may not be just dogs and cats that
are starving and homeless.
In March, CCF commissioned Opinion Research Corp. to poll
Americans’ beliefs about HSUS. Seventy-one percent said they
believe HSUS is “an umbrella group that represents thousands
of local humane societies all across America.” (This is false. HSUS
is not affiliated with a single one.) Also in this poll, 59% falsely
believed HSUS “contributes most of its money to local organizations that care for dogs and cats.”
That poll prompted CCF to launch a brilliant campaign to
dissect this organization and to publicly bring to light its dealings. It took out eye-catching, full page ads in prominent
publications, like the Wall Street Journal, New York Times
and USA Today.
As part of its campaign, CCF created a watchdog website
devoted to analyzing HSUS’ activities. It has attracted more than
a half-million unique visitors and collected more than 45,000
Facebook friends.
The educational outreach seems to be having an impact, at
least a dent. HSUS has
lost a few of its corporate sponsors.
In the meantime,
CCF continues to run
full-page ads and has
stepped it up a notch
by challenging HSUS.
The CCF pledges to
voluntarily shut down
its popular HumaneWatch.org website
if HSUS donates just
50% of its income to
hands-on pet shelters
in the United States.
That’s more like
it! I think local shelters would rejoice in
sharing a pot of $50
million, and animal agriculture can get back
to concentrating on
scientifically developed
industry standards.
