T
he summer season of driving for the Rocky Mountain
Region is well under way as we enter June. Last month
we did not have an HPDE but there was a full calendar
and a variety of events to participate in. The annual
Autocross School and May-Nia Autocross were held at
Front Range Airport. This is always a great, low-key
event, and an opportunity to hone your skills and ease
your way into more high performance driving. Over 60 drivers
participated in the Autocross on Sunday! Thanks to Chris and
his team for once again putting on the event and to the driving
instructors who worked the Autocross School. On the social
scene, 3Zero3 Motorsports hosted a Membership Social in May for
RMR. The wet weather seemed to break for the event and many
members took advantage and brought out their Porsches. I even
won a door prize! Thanks to 3Zero3 for hosting us again this year!
The Porsche Breakfast Club also met and then visited the Shelby
American Collection in Boulder. Thanks to Tom Radow and Erik
Behrendsen for organizing these social events! Closing out the
month of May will be the Edelweiss German Restaurant Drive and
Lunch. Hopefully the weather will be in our favor! Thanks again
to Erik!
June is a jam-packed month of events. The first weekend in
June, will be the Councours d’Elegance charity car show at Arapahoe
Community College. In its 32nd year, this event is a huge Denver
area fund raiser. The event benefits Ability Connection Colorado’s
Creative Options for Early Childhood Education. RMR is a
founding and 32-year sponsor of this Concours, which has broken
records for money collected, cars displayed, and attendance over
the years. This year there will be the unveiling the 2015 New
McLaren 650 S Prototype at the event on June 7th, plus a whole
lot of cars you would not normally see on the street, and many that
you would. Plan to come out and enjoy the day while contributing
to this very worthwhile charity.
David Schmidt’s second annual RMR Spring Gimmick Rally
promises to be a fun way to spend part of your day on Saturday,
June 13. All proceeds go to benefit the Wild Animal Sanctuary
in Keensburg, Colorado. This event includes mystery routes,
Porsche trivia, Porsche poker, door prizes, and fabulous awards!
Registration for the event is only by registering via email with
the Gimmick Rally Event Chair, David Schmidt, at NLeditor@
comcast.net.
The event the Ladies (and Gentlemen) have been waiting for
is almost here! The Ladies’ Day DE, “Chicks on Slicks,” hits the
Colorado State Patrol Track in Golden on June 14. Lisa Hunsicker
and Karen Harrison have been busy organizing and promoting
this event for months, and it is sure to be a great time. If you
haven’t signed up to participate, then you are probably too late!
Look for some HighGear cover shots next month from this annual
tradition. Our second HPDE of 2015 is the June 20-21, Slow –

Porsche Parade and 60th Anniversary Celebration in French
Lick, Indiana is taking place from June 21-27.
An update on the Jerry’s Bleachers Project. We started this
effort in the Fall of 2013 when it was decided to put money
budgeted to a year-end instructor party towards erecting a set of
bleachers and a shade cover overlooking the west course at HPR.
The process has been slower (and more bureaucratic) than we all
would have liked, but not because of efforts by RMR and Doug
Bartlett and others volunteering their time on the project. We
had engineering specifications, foundation specifications, and
plans drawn up for the permit application last Fall. In March,
the Arapahoe County Building Department plans examiner gave
us 13 comments that needed action and/or response. These are
being addressed, and Doug submitted a preliminary response. We
also had to get a Fire Code Review and perhaps a new soils report.
Through all of this, Doug feels we are close to getting the building
permit, and once we do, things should go quickly with digging
caisson holes, dropping in the rebar and pouring concrete. Rebar
cages are done and ready for transport to the track, and the shade
structure (frame and fabric top) are already at HPR. Thanks to
Doug, Rick Gonçalves, Bill Kubilus, Brian Townsend, Kris Lee,
Brett Leveque, Glenn Conser, the donors, and anyone I may have
missed.
I was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Andy
Forberg, Rocky Mountain Region President for 2005-2006, on
May 9. Andy was instrumental in the leadership of the Region as
we transitioned from Second Creek to High Plains Raceway, and
he was just a very good friend to so many of us. There will be a
“Celebration of Life” on June 20 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at David
and Andrea Rossiter’s, 1685 Olive Street, Denver.
As I have written several times, the Rocky Mountain Region is
the community of local Porsche owners, enthusiasts, and friends.
The club continues to grow in numbers, in the type and sheer
number of events and member activities we are involved in, and
in the volunteer roles, committees, and volunteers required to
make these all happen. We can always use new volunteers to help
with putting on events and to take on additional special projects
and added activities. You can always drop me (or any other board
member) an email or let me know at an event if you would like to
get more involved in the RMR Community!
Be sure to check out the calendar each month in HighGear
and the latest updates on the RMR webpage, the FaceBook RMR
event calendar, and e-mail announcements. !

The following was how I spent Mother’s Day:
Happy “Mudders Day” in La Junta,
A story by Chris Lennon.
Over the weekend of May 9-10, about 40
members of AMR and RMR celebrated Mother’s
Day in style—on the track. This terrific event was
organized by John “Dusty” Richey and Melanie “Wolverine”
Richey. John earned his nickname by being attacked by a rather
localized dust storm while working the Turn 1 bunker late in the
day on Saturday. Melanie’s moniker is easily understood by all who
have seen how she devours a race track, particularly in her snazzy
new yellow Cayman.
Everyone who participated in the HPDE at La Junta went
through “challenges” to do so. On Friday afternoon, many of those
who headed down in time for our Ground School at the Rattlesnake
Grill ran into hailstorms and considerable flooding on the way
down I-25. We’re talking enough water to set off our Cayenne’s
parking sensors here, folks! Despite this, we had a great turnout
for Mark Stolberg’s entertaining and informative introduction
to high-performance driving. We should have known that our
adventure was not yet complete when small hail and buckets of
rain dumped down on the grill (and some inside the grill) during
his session. When we left, we found a flooded town of La Junta,
meaning many got to see parts of the surrounding countryside on
a detour that itself was not devoid of watery adventure. We did all
get back to our hotel rooms okay and settled in. Well, except for
those at the flooded Holiday Inn Express. More on that shortly.
Saturday morning brought a much nicer day and a race track
that was ready for action. During our drivers’ meeting, we learned
that Melanie didn’t have her new Cayman with her. The mystery
was cleared up when John began showing photos of the Cayman
completely surrounded by mud that had flowed into the Holiday
Inn Express’s parking lot. Fortunately they were able to plow
around the Cayman and get it out of its muddy home by about
mid-day.
Saturday’s time on the track was fantastic, with lots of
Pit stop
Phil O’Brien, Editor
new students learning the fine art of driving, and many more
experienced folks honing their skills. During the day, we had the
Mayor of La Junta and a Councilman come by, checking out the
event and talking of facility improvements, which got a big round
of applause. They love having The Porsche Club down in La Junta,
and it shows in everyone we encounter whenever we hold an event
in this great town. Robert Yen maintained his proud tradition of
cording his left front tire (three times now!) at La Junta. When it
was suggested he could avoid this by driving slower, he just smiled.
That evening was what has become a tradition for AMR—the
Mexico City Café, where our favorite waitress knows everyone’s
name and provides endless entertainment. Always lots of fun.
Sunday was another beautiful day. The track was fantastic,
and things went extremely well. Before a drivers’ meeting, Mark
Stolberg’s son Zach, who had been doing a great job as “paddock”
on the radios, rounding up corner workers, and staging cars on
grid, came back into the classroom where the meeting was about
to commence. He was looking to see if anyone remained in the
paddock who needed rounding up. He exclaimed “it looks like a
ghost town out there—a really rich ghost town.” Needless to say,
everyone loved Zach.
The end of the event came around 3 p.m. on Sunday, and all
agreed it was another fantastic La Junta HPDE (is there any other
kind?). No one earned the vaunted John Deere award for going
“agricultural,” but there were certainly candidates!
Thanks again to everyone who made this event such a great
success. We can’t wait to return to La Junta!

Welcome our newest members!
Selfies welcome!
You have found the greatest
group of car nuts on the planet. Our monthly meetings
are loaded with food, beverages, networking with likeminded Porsche People and much technical and social
camaraderie. Some of the venues we’ve been to before,
some places are new to us. All are interesting and fun.
It’s all about the people (yeah, right!). We all share
the love of anything Porsche-related. From real racing
or just driving fast in a controlled environment like on
the track or autocross, to meeting a mechanic or owner
of a car just like yours for a chat about problems and
solutions, to washing and waxing in preparation for
the weekend tour or car show, you’ve found the most
precious resource for the care and feeding of your car
and hobby (addiction).
Show us your car! Let’s see your smiling face! How
about a photo of your “garage queen’s” throne room!

Share photos from your favorite drive; share the story of
your hunt for the favorite car; share the triumph of your
first rebuild. That story and those pictures are worth
immortalizing in print.
We’ve all been there; maybe you’re experiencing the
newness of that first special car. Perhaps you’re climbing
the ranks in a competitive series of races. Have you found
the perfect wash and wax routine to deliver the trophy?
(Some secrets are worth keeping.) The point is that the
club’s members are its true strength. Your membership
is your key to unlocking the wealth of knowledge and
friendship the club represents. The membership socials
are the first step to a deeper understanding, a deeper
relationship with your vehicle. You know that Porsche
has won many awards for racing and technical and
aesthetic design. Come share the experience!

Car Saga
By Seth Tefertiller
My father, Terry Tefertiller, bought the 1976 Porsche 930 whose tale I tell here in Colorado Springs around 1998. I was in the 8th
grade at the time. I remember that he sold two Corvettes and bought two Porsches, a 911 Turbo replica and a real 930. I didn’t ride in
the 930 much, but it was always parked in the garage and I always admired it.
I only drove it once back then, when I was in high school, and I didn’t have Dad’s permission! It was on a weekend when my dad was
out of town. Before he left, I asked him where the keys to the 930 were. He replied, “Why?” I said that I was going to change the oil in
my car and I wanted to do it in the garage. So he showed me where he kept the keys. Well, I took the car Ferris Bueller style! I picked
up a good friend, and we just hot-rodded all around town, stopping to show off at the houses of all the girls we knew!! I remember that
misadventure like it happened yesterday!
After I graduated from high school, I moved to Breckenridge and worked at the resort in the winter, and in the summer I worked with
my dad on the oil field near Grand Junction. One day on the oil field my dad suffered a catastrophic accident that mangled his hand and
left him in chronic pain, for which he has to wear a morphine patch and take numerous medications. As you can imagine, his personal life
suffered from the drugs and surgeries and unemployment. When he knew he was going to lose his house and also go through his second
divorce, he decided to send the 930 to South Dakota where his brother lives, and that’s where it sat for about 10 years.
Photos courtesy of Erik Behrendsen.
I never forgot about the car and would periodically check in with my dad about it, asking where it was and whether there was a cover
on it. He said it was in a barn and had a cover on it and that it was fine. I continued to inquire about the car, and I came up with the
idea of bringing the car back to Colorado and restoring it. My dad had told me he thought the engine needed to be rebuilt because before
he sent it to South Dakota it was blowing oil out the air filter. He had gotten an estimate for around $10,000 to rebuild it, which was
another reason he sent it away—he just couldn’t afford it. Looking back, I think my dad should have sold it and used the money to meet
his needs—perhaps to keep his house—but now that the car is mine I’m so glad he kept it all those years. If I hadn’t been so persistent
about getting him to hand the car down to me, then it would have most definitely sat another 10 years. I feel a great sense of pride that I
saved this car and brought it back to life.

When I eventually got the car it had not weathered well. I
can’t help but think it was just parked out in the elements and
forgotten about. I mostly did the restoration my way and not the
way everyone else told me, but after I heard the same thing over
and over again from all the people working on the car I did make
some changes to my plans. My goal was to make it look like a
Rauh Welt car and paint it flat black with a full body kit. But as
the build progressed there were several people telling me
how valuable the car was because of the year, model, and
color. There was a guy who told me he would not paint
the car unless I took the body kit off and painted the
car the original color. I was shocked! I couldn’t believe
this guy turned my business away! I thought long and
hard about the direction I was taking in this build, and I
decided to listen to these Porsche fanatics and still have
my way too. The original color on this car is called Viper
Green Diamond metallic; the number inside the door is
264. This color was only available upon special order
from the factory on this year and this model only. To my
knowledge there were only 520 930s produced in 1976
that were sent to the U.S.A.; I can’t imagine that there
were too many in this special-order color. After finding all this out,
I decided to paint it the original color, but I had already ordered
the body kit and the rims, so I was committed to building it that
way. That’s really what I wanted the car to look like, but I had all
the original parts restored as well so that one day if I sold the car
I could put it all back together the way it was meant to be simply
because it would potentially be worth so much more.
The rims came from a company named “Work” in Japan; they
are three-piece race wheels. Rauh Welt puts these rims on all of its
cars, and I think they are the perfect rim for the shape of the car.
I just had to have a set, so I ordered them through a third-party
shop. They took 18 weeks to get made and shipped here. I got
some of the body kit from GT Racing in Colorado Springs and the
rest from Better Bodies. Eisenbuds received the car when it came
back from South Dakota; they had it for three months and gave me
10
a bill for $8000. Their goal was to get the car running and make it
safe to drive (brake system, fuel system, tie rods, and a lot of other
miscellaneous things). But the car still leaked oil everywhere.
Once I got the car back, I started to fit and shape the body kit.
The rims finally showed up, and I got to see what the car might look
like when it was done. I took the car on a small joy ride now that
it had safe tires on it, and the turbo went bad and let out a massive
plume of smoke. So now I was looking for a new mechanic, and
I found Mark from Autoworks Colorado. He replaced the turbo
($2000). I proceeded to deconstruct the car and get it ready for
media blasting and then paint. After the car spent several weeks at
the paint shop, I got a call from the painter telling me it was ready,
so I went and picked it up and started to re-assemble. It took me
about a week to put everything back together, and I finally got to
enjoy the car: it felt amazing!
My childhood dream had come true, but this feeling didn’t
last long because during one of the joy rides something just didn’t
feel right. The boost didn’t seem to be running at 100%, and the
oil leak got worse. So I took it back to Autoworks, and Mark said
that he needed to drop the motor and start tearing into it. He
quickly knew that it was needing a full rebuild. This was not what
I wanted to hear, but it had to be done. I had come so far, and
I wasn’t going to stop here. The rebuild took around six months,
because the engine had been rebuilt once before and there were a
lot of things that weren’t done correctly. Autoworks had to seek
out several different parts and try to figure out what the last guy
did and why. Mark was adamant about getting everything correct
and not cutting corners— it’s hard to argue with that. The car has
40,000 original miles on it, and it will be easy to keep track of the
new miles accumulated after the new rebuild.
I have invested about $50,000 into this restoration, and I’m
glad it’s done! I’m excited to see it in HighGear so I can share it
with all my family, friends, and co-workers. Anyone who knows me
knows about the Porsche because I have been talking about it for
almost 17 years and have been restoring it for the last nine months:
it has consumed my life. I have invested a substantial amount of
money and energy into this for a 29-year-old married man with a
newborn baby, but it was worth the wait and the headaches.

On every first Saturday of each month
(rain or shine), a glorious gathering of
cars puts on an impromptu show dubbed
“Cars & Coffee” in Boulder/Lafayette in
the parking lot at 95th and Arapahoe.
Porsches, Ferraris, Cobras, Bentleys
and Lamborghinis have all been known to
show up as well as more American Muscle

S
Ladies, register now
for the event planned
just for you! PCA-RMR
and our sponsors 3zero3
Motorsports, Dan Fead of
Fuller/Sotheby’s Realty, Dr. Lisa
Hunsicker of Revalla Plastic Surgery
and Medical Aesthetics, Littleton Hospital, Prestige
Imports, Wine Country Motorsports and Women’s
Edition Magazine are pleased to announce our
Ladies’ Day Driver Education event at the Colorado
State Patrol Track.
Whether this is your first time on the track or you
are very experienced, we have a run group to match
your skills. For our new and less experienced drivers
we have one-on-one instruction available by our
PCA- trained instructors who will guide you through
the process carefully. We will also accommodate our
advanced drivers and every level in between.
The event is open to all women and all makes of
cars (convertibles must have rollover protection, and
SUVs must be Porsches). Cost is $95 per driver which
includes a fun-filled day of driving, catered lunch and
a commemorative gift. Additional lunches for your
friends and family can be purchased when registering
for an additional $10 per lunch. We will provide a
tent, tables and chairs as well as lots of cold water.
There are no concessions available at the track, so
please plan accordingly with snacks and such. Please
be aware too that because of the layout of this track,
you will not be able to enter or leave while the track
is “hot” or in operation. Coming and going will only
be available at the start of the day, during lunch and
after the event. We will provide exact times as we get
closer to the event.
Register at http://pcarockymtn.motorsportreg.
com/. You will need to go to this site and register
your personal information first, unless you are
already registered at motorsportreg.com, then it will
allow you to click on Ladies’ Day for registration.
This event is limited to 70 drivers. This is a popular
event and we encourage you
to register quickly before the
event sells out!
You must were a long
-sleeved shirt, long pants (both
must be cotton) and closed-toed
shoes when driving. Bring or
borrow a helmet if possible
(Snell rated 2005 or newer).
There will be a few “loaner”
helmets available. We are in need
of volunteers to be corner workers
or to work the gate checking cars in. Perhaps your
husbands, boyfriends, friends or family members
would care to help out. They will be compensated for
their time. Corner worker volunteers are asked to call
Chris Sulley at (720) 630-6898. All other volunteers
can register at the same place as registration, and you
will see a category for volunteers. They will need
to bring a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and closedtoed shoes to be worn while volunteering.
Cars must pass a technical inspection and we
encourage you to attend one of the free pre-tech
inspections on Wednesday night, June 3rd. Should
your car have an issue causing your car to fail, you
would have time to correct the situation before the
event. We will be offering inspections the day of the
event, but you must arrive early if you are planning
to have this done the day of. If anything causes your
car to fail—something as simple as a brake light
being out—we would hate for it to prevent your
being able to participate in the event. The pre-tech
inspections will be held Wednesday night, June 3rd
and the locations are as follows:
•3zero3 Motorsports, 5000 Robb St., Bldg 1A,
Wheat Ridge, CO 80033, (303) 456-8383
•Simple Automotive Solutions/Carquip, 7191
Arapahoe Ave., Boulder, CO 80303, (303) 4431343
•Poudre Sports Car, 5806 S. College Ave., Ft.
Collins, CO 80525, (970)229-0990

Autocross school and May-nia
By Chris Sully, Eveent Chair
Our first autocross event of the year was a success!
We had forty-eight students enroll in the school and
more than two-thirds of them were new to autocross.
Thirty of the school participants also attended Sunday’s
May-Nia autocross event. We welcome this new set of
adrenaline junkies to autocross.
Our instructor core led the group through three
distinct exercises in the morning to introduce our
students to threshold braking, throttle steering, and
car balance. Each student learned the importance of
smooth transitions to maintain as much tire patch at all
four wheels as possible. In the afternoon we set up a
full autocross course for the students to practice these
skill sets and to link them together as they negotiated
the field of cones. Emphasis was placed on situational
awareness and “high eyes” or “looking ahead,” Both
of which contribute more to negotiating an autocross
course quickly than pure horsepower.
On Sunday, we modified the course from the school
just a little to provide everyone with a level playing
field. We also set the course to run clockwise instead
of the traditional counterclockwise direction: a chance
for everyone to put a little wear on the other side of
the tires. A total of 61 drivers took seven runs apiece
through the course. As you view the results you will
see the usual list of suspects at the top of the charts.
Fast time of day went to Jonathan Lopata in his dad’s
2007 Noble M400. In a worrisome trend for those of
us with adult kids driving our cars, Sarah Henderson
bested her dad in Hap’s newly acquired Spec Boxster.
Top Porsche time of day went to Doug Bartlett with the
third quickest time.
Given the weather the last few weeks we were pretty
lucky. We kept a close eye on the storms off to the west
and fortunately the weather drifted south and north
of us both days. We caught a few sprinkles Saturday
afternoon at the end of beer:thirty, but it didn’t keep a
hardy group from enjoying their twelve-ounce trophies.
We have two more autocross events on the schedule
this year. Check the event calendar and reserve your
spot.

Remind me the next time I organize a trip to Boulder that
involves lunch not to make it on CU graduation day.
Saturday May 9th was like any other Saturday at the Shelby
American Collection until the caravan from RMR PCA and the
PBC showed up. We were treated to a wonderful tour by PCAer
Greg Volan.
After our usual second Saturday of the month Porsche Breakfast
Club meeting at the Village Inn on Colorado and Mexico (I-25 and
Colorado), Dale Hartzell led the caravan through the monsoonlike rain to the museum in Boulder. Other than the fact that a few
of us missed the exit (but not by much) the trip was uneventful.
Greg opened up the GT 40, which gave us all rare picture
opportunities of the cockpit and engine bay. The PBC toured the
museum few years ago, and many of the cars are different. Most
notably, yesterday we saw the 7th car by Peter Brock.
The museum has a Cobra go kart, and the staff let the kids sit
in it for pictures. I’m jealous. Very jealous!
The “fun” started when I learned it was CU graduation day,
and since I didn’t make reservations ... I’m not sure where most of
the group ate, and I promise not to make that mistake again!
My daughter Marisa took a picture of every car. Later that
night, I overheard her telling a friend about the cars. When asked
if she had a good time, she simply told me, “Yes,” and that learning
the history of the race cars was cool, and the people we had lunch
with were nice (but we talked too much about cars). That Greg’s
tour made an impact on a 12-year-old girl will probably rank as one
of the top compliments the museum and Greg can get.
After track season, say November, let’s tour another museum,
or another restoration shop on a Saturday after PBC breakfast.
Email me at [email protected] with suggestions, and I will
see if Erik will let me set up a tour and make lunch reservations.
Remember, it’s not just the cars, it’s the people.

THE 32nd ANNUAL COLORADO CONCOURS
D’ ELEGANCE & EXOTIC SPORTS CAR SHOW
T
he big day is almost here! On June 7, 2015,
the Rocky Mountain Region of Porsche
Club of America along with numerous
corporate sponsors will host the largest
gathering of priceless automobiles in
Colorado.
The Concours was founded 32 years ago by RMR/
PCA members Tom Scott and Stim Kennedy and
has broken records each year for money collected,
cars displayed, and paid spectator attendance since.
In 2014 approximately $141,678 gross was raised,
with a net of 108,636 benefiting Ability Connection
of Colorado (formerly CP Colorado). There were
approximately 446 cars displayed, of which 118 were
Porsches. This year we will have a special display of
the front-engined water pumpers aka 924, 944, 968,
and 928s. If you own one of these cars or special
variants thereof, or know someone who does, please
consider registering the car for this very worthwhile
event. To register go to www.coloradoconcours.org at
$50 per car.
This year there are 18 car clubs participating in
the show. There will be a stunning array of Porsches,
Audis, Datsuns, Jaguars, Ferraris, Mercedes Benzes,
NSXs, Corvettes, BMWs, Alphas, Saabs, Maseratis,
Lotus, and vintage race cars from RMVR. PCA
members from all regions are invited. A special award
will be given to the member from the farthest location.
We will need your help! Here are the ways you can
support our fundraising :
1) Bring your special car out, to be judged or
displayed. Register at www.coloradoconcours.org The
judges will base their scores on your car’s originality,
exterior paint, fit and finish, cleanliness of interior,
storage compartments, and engine. Displayed cars
will not be judged. For an additional $25.00 added to
the regular $50.00 registration fee you may choose to
have your car judged against other marques within the
field instead of your Porsche peers.
2) Volunteer to help us the day of the show. If
you have a few hours to help with judging, scoring,
working the entrance gates or parking cars, your
help would be most appreciated. Please go to www.
coloradoconcours.org and go to the volunteer link
or call Terri Armstrong at 303-691-9339 for more
information.
3) Be a spectator. Last year there were approximately
14,000 paid spectators. It is a great event for families
and friends. Tickets are $10 each, kids under 12
are free. If you’re able to donate a little extra, your
donations are tax deductible.
Please mark your calendars and plan to attend
this fun event. Contact Jerry Medina at
[email protected] with questions.
Thank you
Jerry Medina

H
ello Zone 9ers,
In mid-April, I attended the
California Festival of Speed in Fontana,
CA, and had a great time! I got there on
Thursday afternoon, picked up lunch at
In-N-Out, and then helped Zone 8 Representative
Tom Brown set up sponsor banners and cones for
the car displays on Friday. Auto Club Speedway is
HUGE! The track itself has a low-banked D-shaped
oval with an infield, and there are acres and acres
of parking lots all over. The Festival of Speed
consisted of PCA Club Racing, Time Trials, track
tours, food court, Porsche Driving Experience,
driving simulators, Vendor Row, Porsche concours,
Porsche corral, Porsche swap meet, Euro club
corrals, and super car paddocks. It’s a good thing
the event is three days because there’s so much to
see and experience!
Friday’s drivers’ schedule consisted of practice
sessions, and then on Saturday there were qualifying
sessions, sprint races, and time trials. Before the
end of the day, there was a 60-minute enduro race.
Many of the volunteers and some of the drivers got
together for a buffet dinner on Saturday night, and
it was nice to talk about the day’s activities. And
since the dinner was early, some of us got together
for a late-night snack at In-N-Out!
I was only able to see some of the practice
sessions on Sunday because I had to head to the
airport to fly home, but I did manage to get a little
more shopping in at Vendor Row! All in all, I had
In the zone
Liz Shaw, PCA Zone 9 Representative
a great time at the Festival of Speed, and I’d like to
attend it again next year. Big thanks to all of the
PCA volunteers for putting on a fun event.
During the second weekend of May, I attended
West Texas Region’s first autocross in a series of five
autocrosses this year. The weather leading up to the
weekend was dicey at best, with wind, rain, hail,
snow, tornadoes, etc., all over the Southwest. But
the morning of the autocross, Mother Nature gave
us a break and the clouds held onto their raindrops.
I was very impressed with the organization and
running of the autocross since this is only the second
year that West Texas Region has been running
autocrosses in a long time. All of us drivers got 12
practice runs and then four timed runs. Park Place
Porsche was also there with five new models, and
they were giving demo rides to people. WTR is very
fortunate to have their sponsorship and support.
After the day was done, many of us gathered at Fox
& Hound for bench racing and food!
Still to come in May is Roadrunner Region’s
Fiesta New Mexico and Intermountain Region’s
Amazing Rally. I have my trips planned for both
events and I’m really looking forward to being busy
in Zone 9, right up to the end of the month.
We’re already heading into the second half of
2015, so please try to attend Zone 9 Region events
as often as possible!

Tech talk
It ain’t cheatin’ if ya don’t get caught!
By Pedro P. Bonilla (GCR PCA)
Last November I received a
call from a guy who wanted to ask
a couple of technical questions
regarding one of my products
which adds 23 HP to the 2.5 liter
Boxster engine.
I asked: “How can I help you?”
He said: “I’d like to know if I
install your TechnoPower Kit in my
Boxster, can people tell that it’s in
just by looking at it?”
I then explained that, no,
the modifications in my kit were
internal and they consisted of
boring out the throttle body which
gave the car more ability to breathe,
that I also modified the intake tee
adding a very efficient air splitter
and that finally we updated and
remapped the ECU with software
so that the car could take advantage
of the extra air and thus make more
power.
I reiterated that all those
changes could not be seen by the
naked eye.
I then asked him on what
model year he was installing the kit
in?
He said: “In my ’99 Spec
Boxster”.
I immediately told him that if
he was racing under Boxster Spec
Rules it would be illegal. He said:
“I know!, I know!, I know!”
He sounded very upset with my
remark, so I quickly changed the
subject and asked him when was his
next race, to which he responded:
“At the end of January.”
I thought to myself: The only
Boxster Spec Race at the end of
January is the 48 Hours of Sebring.
So, I asked: “Where?” and he
said: “Sebring.”
I then said: “Good, I’ll see you
there.”
He asked: “Are you also racing?”
I answered: “No, I’m working.”
Then he said: “Cool, what do
you do there?”
I hesitated for a second and
then responded: “I’m the chief of
Tech!”
Immediately there was silence
on the other end, I heard a
distinctive “click” and the line went
dead.
Dang!, I just lost another sale :(

Rocky Mountain PCA to Host its First Tire Rack Street Survival School on
Saturday August 29, 2015
Michael Rosen and Doug Bartlett
The Rocky Mountain Region PCA, with the participation of the Rocky Mountain Chapter BMW CCA, will host a
Tire Rack Street Survival School on August 29, 2015 at the Colorado State Patrol Track in Golden. The Tire Rack Street
Survival program provides teenage drivers with a hands-on driving experience in real-world situations. Teens learn the
handling limits of their daily driver and how to control their car at those limits. The Tire Rack Street Survival School goes
beyond required driver education to give teens the driving tools and hands-on experience to become safer, smarter drivers.
For those unfamiliar with the program, it is a fantastic way for new drivers to learn accident avoidance skills in a safe
environment. There are braking exercises, slalom courses, emergency lane change exercises, and a skid pad for learning
how to manage understeer and oversteer.
There will only be 30 student slots, and the cost for the full day including lunch is only $75. Each teen will drive his
or her own (or family) car and will have an in-car instructor for every exercise. We expect the school to sell out quickly.
If you have teen drivers in your family, you should register them soon! Please also recommend the program to friends and
co-workers with teen drivers. This is not just another driver education class. It’s not unusual for parents to come asking
how they can get similar training. The kids will have a blast!
For more information about Street Survival or to register a student, visit http://www.streetsurvival.org.
In addition to looking for students, the school needs the following from our membership:
1. Qualified Coaches: You don’t need to be a DE instructor, but you should at least have the skills to run in an
advanced DE run group or a few years of autocrossing experience and the ability to calmly communicate succinctly from
the passenger seat, while someone else is behind the wheel. In addition, all coaches are required to take an online tutorial
from the Street Survival School Program and register with the program. It is free and takes about 1.5 hours. Here is a link
to the tutorial: http://www.thelhtgroup.com/LHTClients/Tire_Rack/Live_Courses/Street_Survival_HTML/html/index.
html
2. Registration/Day of Event Volunteers: We need six people to help with registration on the day of the event and
help throughout the day with logistics.
3. Classroom instructor: We are looking for a younger club member (someone with whom the students will relate
better than the two of us) to understudy the StreetSurvival.org staff in the classroom segment and then lead the classroom
instruction in subsequent years. If you are pre-40’s, enjoy making presentations and/or have teaching experience, please
contact us.
4. If you have any media contacts whom we could approach to help promote the school, please send them to Doug
Bartlett [email protected] and/or Michael Rosen [email protected].
5. We need two gasoline- or battery-powered leaf blowers. If you have one we can borrow for the day, please email
Doug Bartlett [email protected] and/or Michael Rosen [email protected].
Instructors and volunteers are requested to register with RMR PCA via MotorsportReg.com at http://msreg.com/
ColoradoSS2015.
I get around
Danielle Badler, RMR/PCA Columnist
I
’ve been thinking a lot lately about unbridled excess.
What got me started were news reports about
the spring art auction season in New York, where
a record was set for the most expensive work of art
ever sold at auction: a Picasso painting called “Les
Femmes d’Alger” (Version “O.”) For $179.4 million.
That was followed by the most expensive sculpture,
Giacometti’s “L’Homme au Doigt,” which went for $141.3
million.
According to the e-newsletter Quartz, the dizzying
prices are being driven, at least in part, by Asian and
Russian billionaires … and tactics by the auction houses
to offer price guarantees to the owners.
Quartz says we mere mortals shouldn’t worry. Only a
small, closed club of super-rich can play. And the bidding
is a way for them to boost their “prestige.” Or, put another
way, it’s a way for them to say to each other that theirs is
bigger than yours, or mine or anyone else’s.
The money, itself, really doesn’t mean anything.
Which is hard to fathom. But it’s not unlike Jeff Bezos
spending $200 million to buy the Washington Post. I
mean, he wrote a check.
No, Quartz points out that the real shame is that the
higher the prices go, the greater the likelihood that the
paintings will vanish into private homes or, heaven forbid,
secure warehouses … rarely to be seen again … which is
why the artists made them in the first place.
It’s not unlike the collector car market, is it?
I recall reading about Ralph Lauren’s Bugatti Type
57SC, about how, if they run it for longer than, maybe, a
few minutes, the engine has to be completely re-detailed.
How much longer will we see a Ferrari 250 GTO
actually moving under its own power? Or even see one at
all? If the market rate for one today is $50 million, plus
or minus, and climbing, how much longer until they, too,
will be sequestered in giant safes?.
Or a Bugatti Royale? Or any blue chip classic? And if
that’s the start of the trend, how soon will it trickle down
to your run of the mill Gullwing? Or 427 Cobra? Or
917?
No, beyond a certain point, classic cars in private
collections will be locked away, just like paintings, in
private warehouses. Waiting for another oligarch with
unlimited funds to come along and move it to their private
warehouse.
What a shame.
But then there’s this guy, Paul Bailey. He’s a Brit.
First he bought a McLaren P1. Then he drove it to pick
up a Ferrari La Ferrari. And then, together with his wife,
he drove over to pick up a Porsche 918 Spyder as well.
That’s right, all in the same day. The trifecta of
modern supercars.
And he videotaped the whole thing. How do I know?
I watched the video, through MotorAuthority, which got
it from SupercarDRIVER.
And the guy provides a commentary on the video,
about the similarities and differences among the vehicles,
and what it’s like to be behind the wheel.
According to MotorAuthority, Bailey and his wife
were co-owners of a communications company that they
sold for north of $40 million.
Yeah, that’s not pocket change. But it’s hardly enough
to raise a paddle for a 250 GTO, or a Picasso.
The article says Bailey “does his best to share (his
cars) with the world in videos like these. Bailey is also a
member of a group that raffles off rides in his cars, and the
money supports worthy causes.”
Well, that’s special. But why do I have this vague
discomfort about the whole thing? What am I supposed
to think? Jealousy? Envy? Sure, he’s giving back, but
aren’t his actions a bit over the top?
And, speaking of over the top, take the annual fundraising dinner for the Robin Hood Foundation in New
York.
Do you know about that event? Each year it sets a
record for the amount of money collected for a “worthy
cause” in one night. Because the audience is all hedge
fund gazillionaires, people who can write a seven or eight
figure check and not think twice about it. So bully for
them.
I had a brush with it all, a few years ago. I was walking
along and I saw … no, I heard this sound, I turned, and
there it was, a Bugatti Veyron, in motion. I followed, on
foot, and saw that it was pulling up to a hotel.
By the time I got up to the car, triple black, there was
no driver in sight. I asked the doorman, who was driving?
I fully expected the name of some sports or rock celebrity.
But he shrugged. He answered, this way, exactly, “Just
some guy. Who went on into the hotel.”
What do you know? Some guy. Some rich guy.

Remembering Richard Walter Sparks
Richard Walter Sparks, born June 11, 1951 in Grand Junction,
Colorado. Moved to the Golden area in 1961. He graduated high
school in 1969 from Golden High School. His passion was cars, mostly
Porsches and race cars. He loved to watch the 24 Hours of Daytona. He
also liked NASCAR and was always watching races. He was a fan of Jeff
Gordon.
Dick was a Porsche mechanic as his profession, but it was also his
passion. His desire was to make the car the best he could and he was
good at it. He began his career as a mechanic in 1971 at Bob Hagestad
Porsche Audi. In 1976 he opened his shop, Nine Lives Porsche, Inc.,
later changed to Nine Lives Racing. Most of that time was spent doing
what he loved. He enjoyed spending time with his customers as well as
taking care of their cars.
Dick passed away on December 23, 2014, of cardiac arrest at home,
in his sleep, with a smile on his face. He had a big heart, was always
generous to all he met and will be missed.
There will be a memorial gathering at Estes Park Marina on
Saturday, June 13th at 10:30 a.m. by the lake. Anyone who wishes to
come is welcome. Come help us celebrate his life.

home.
This weekend isn’t just for track junkies,
however. For everyone else, there is a huge
variety of things to enjoy. From great

Set of four adjustable rear upper
control arms fits all 996/997 911s,
1999-2008. Lowering a 911 with a factory
suspension results in excessive rear wheel
negative camber that cannot be adjusted to
correct factory specifications. This results in
excessive inner tire tread wear. Replacing
the non-adjustable original “dogbones” with
these Heim-joint adjustable arms overcomes
this problem. This set from Innovative Speed
Solutions is used, but in good condition.
Asking $350. Please contact Jim at 970-2324936 or [email protected]. (June)

What we do
Whether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by particip
ating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more.
DRIVING EVENTS
Tour
A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which
participants follow a given route to a destination
(which may or may not be known in advance). A
tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long
weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours
usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful
in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure
destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with
rallies to add variety and a dose of competition to
the event.
RMR hosts at least one tour each year; AMR
typically offers several. A number of tours are
usually offered at Porsche Parade as well.
Rally
A rally is a competitive event in which
contestants attempt to follow a course specified
by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on
public, paved roads, and speed limits are always
observed. The two major types of rallies are the
Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick
rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow
the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct
speed, as points are deducted for arriving at
checkpoints (the locations of which are not known
in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically
a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles
of some type.
Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—
at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche
Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a
Gimmick rally, each year.
Autocross (AX)
An autocross is a competition in which drivers
navigate their cars through a course defined
by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot.
Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out
around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear
for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long
intervals — typically only two or three cars are on
the course at the same time. Autocross is a safe
way to experience high-performance driving while
learning to drive your car at its limit.
Together, RMR and AMR host several autocross
events each year, including Eiskhana (essentially
an autocross on the ice!) in the winter and an AX
school in the spring. Additionally, autocross is a
major event at Porsche Parade.
Driver Education (DE)
A driver education event provides a safe,
controlled environment for high-performance
driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels
the opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the
help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled,
closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA
philosophy, the primary emphasis at all times is
on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE
experience may be habit-forming!
As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for
racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some
DE events are followed immediately by a time trial
event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify
their performance. Lap times may then be used
to measure personal improvement or for bragging
rights amongst your peers, etc.
RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains
Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the
La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s
Peak International Raceway tracks.
Club Race
A club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing event.
A race weekend consists of a number of practice
sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often
involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races.
Since a Club Racing license (issued by PCA
National) is required for competition, club racers are
serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring
with them to the track can be quite impressive! As
a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program
was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever
Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.
Because of the logistics involved in an event
of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of
volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting
events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!
RMR hosts one club race each autumn at High
Plains Raceway which, when combined with a
Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling
weekend!
NON-DRIVING EVENTS
Membership Social
Membership socials provide an opportunity
to reconnect with old friends and meet new
members. Historically, a membership meeting
begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed
by the evening’s program. The content of the
program varies, sometimes featuring a “slide
show” from a recent event, or a guest speaker
such as accomplished Speed World Challenge
racer Randy Pobst.
Membership socials, unless otherwise stated,
are held the first Thursday of the month. Different
venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and
inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for
details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to
the Committee Chair or a Board member!
Tech Session
A tech session is just what it sounds like–a
session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not
just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate
practical, “do-it-yourself” procedures such as brake
bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by
experienced Porsche technicians, many of whom
are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear.
RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year,
typically in the “off months” when few driving
events take place. In addition, numerous
tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade.
Concours d’Elegance
A concours is essentially a car show, in which
contestants endeavor to present their cars in
as close to “perfect” condition as possible. A
number of judged categories usually exist, typically
differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356,
Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver” or
“full preparation” or somewhere in between). Cars
sometimes may be entered as “display only,” for
owners who wish to participate but not compete.
RMR participates in a handful of local
concours events each year, including the annual
Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d’Elegance,
benefiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The
annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours
each year.

The Zone Nine Porsches at La Junta
event was held the weekend of June 13,
14 and 15 in 1975. It was a multi-region,
multi-peopled multi-event.
Events
included a concours, a rally, a speed
event, a driving class, a tech session,
an awards luncheon, cocktail parties
and dinners. The cost was $19.75.
Overall best score based on the Parade
Competition Rules went to Ernie and Pat
Kemper with 290.1308 points in a 356C.
This month’s random
question asked to five
random members:
“So IF you had a
bucket list, what
Porsche related
item is on it?
(Be realistic...)?”
Luann Dodge
“Replacing my Subaru with a Macan.”
Amanda Yuill
“918. I have simple tastes.”
Thomas Kautz
“Pikes Peak Hill Climb in any well prepped 911.”
James Widrig
“Touring Europe with the family in a new
Carrera GTS.”
Phillip Patrick O’Brien
“IF I had a bucket list, and I don’t, I could check
one off on June 6...”
