BFVERLY DEFENDS TITLE —
LEAGUE TAKES NEW FORM
Beverly High Panthers will be back in
this 26th formal season of North Shore
League action seeking to retain its
schoolboy hockey title, the second for
Beverly in three years. This season,
though, it will be under the guidance of
new head Coach Jerry Ryan. And, there
will be new challengers this season, with
some warily watching oncoming Salem
High.
Though not official, this may be the
final season for North Shore League
hockey as the loop has been constituted
for so many years. Lynn English, Salem,
and Beverly have entered Northeastern
Conference competition leaving St.
Mary's, St. Johh's Prep, Peabody, and
Maiden Catholic outside the Conference
framework. Most of those involved feel
there will be some format change.
Beverly, allowing only 25-goals last
year while scoring 122, lost only to
Peabody in their 19-1-0 season. They will
be back to face the Tanners — and their
former Coach George Kinnaly, in the
third round feature.
In other coaching changes, Bill
Falasca—formerly with St. Mary's and
Danvers, takes over at Winthrop, and
John Hartnett will lead the Falcons this
year.
Marblehead and Maiden Catholic will
be roaring back this year looking for their
familiar top roosts.
Last year fans were treated to a
preview of sorts when the annual All-Star
tilt was broadened to include the junior
high All-Star teams. Some of those
youngsters will see their first varsity
hockey action before the first week is out.
For the first time three teams broke the
100 goals barrier in one season as
Beverly, M.C., and the Headers turned
the trick. It could easily have been four
clubs with a bit of luck as Winthrop
arrived at the threshold with 99.
Beverly's Bill Gilligan topped the individual race with 43-34-77, and the entire

Winthrop and Saugus each placed two in

Tragedy threw a pall over the loop in its

Carlin, succumbed to a coronary at the
