D uring the these days in Santa Susanna 2014 we celebrate the 12th anniversary of the founding of our European Family. The dozen is full – unbelievable how fast time goes by, but great what we have achieved ever since. The beginning was not easy and it took a decade until we had our constitutional Congress in Minsk, the Capital of Belarus, and the EBFF was founded. In the past months we had the privilege to read one success story after the other within our world structure. Many of these meetings took place in Europe and our EBFF President was not only the driving force, but the most skillful diplomat and remarkable visionary. As they say – it always starts from the top. We are very fortunate to have Dr. Rafael Santonja at the helm of the EBFF and we ware all very proud to have him as President of the IFBB. In the „we“ I include the late Ben and Joe Weider, whose spirits will always be with us. Tirelessly Rafael travels the world and, if necessary, going any „extra mile“ to achieve the best for our sport and especially for our community, for our world wide family. More than ever I say on behalf of all 47 National Federations of the EBFF, thank you Rafael for everything you did and do for all of us. I remember as clear as it would have been yesterday, May 18, 2002, the Birthday of our EBFF. Without Rafael we would not have been able to celebrate this new beginning of the sport of bodybuilding and fitness in Europe. Rafael never gave up and he always had this goal on his priority list. As much as I could I always supported Rafael in everthing he did and does, but especially I supported the founding of EBFF. Now, 12 years later, we are stronger than ever. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank each an every National Member Federation in Europe for the hard work, the loyalty and the willingness always to strive for the best. I’m the first one to acknowledge that the women within our family play a major role. From the bottom of my heart – thank you, dear Ladies within the EBFF, for your support and fantastic work. It starts from the top again – NIEVES not only is bestowing us always with her wonderful smile and gestures, she is by all means the strong women behind a great leader and the absolutely irrevocably best „support system“ for her husband. Thank you Nieves. A continental Federation with 47 members is like a big ship and as difficult to steer. An efficient, strong and loyal team is necessary, especially at times of rough sea. We have such a team and I would like to thank each and every member of the EBFF-EXCO for the great work throughout the year, most of all I thank you for the trust and loyalty to our President. It truly is a privilege to be the EBFF Honorary President. Thank you all very much. Unfortunately I cannot be with you in Santa Susanna 2014. My thoughts are with all of you and I’m positive that we’ll see not only a new record in numbers but a great gathering of people from all over Europe in the spirit of friendship and love for the sport, for our EBFF. And last „F“ to me stands for FAMILY. Editorial ARNOLD CLASSIC IN MADRID ONLY 6 WEEKS REMAIN! he ARNOLD CLASSIC T EUROPE has become the largest gathering of muscle, strength and sport in Europe. iT Is entirely consolidated. Now comes its fourth edition, already expected to be sold out. There are more participants and more companies than ever. Everyone has realized that, in the field of fitness, speaking generally, there is no better opportunity to appear before the public like during those continuous moments of show, over three full days in the in the athletics and parade of bodies in peak physical shape does not stop offering such a broad sporting showcase that can not be found anywhere else and also receives an enthusiastic reception by many tens of thousands of fans, as endorsed by the presence of the most important media of the country. This year, if possible, the interest to visitors is even greater: in addition to the string of specialties (involving about 20 sports, all exceptionally attractive emotional for us), of that competitive strongman, from that power, that gymnastics of those races, we have here the stunning reality of the challenge of the kings of the muscle, which this year come direct from Olympia, animated by a thirst for revenge that will not let them rest until being sated. We already know that there will be all the great bodybuilders of the moment and, behind, awaiting, the procession of “capped aces” that can surprise at any time. We have already begun to make our bets. Since its inception in Columbus, Ohio, the Arnold Classic has grown in number of activities and visitors, in addition to expectations, to become the modern Olympics of the muscle. Now, led by the hand of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Rafael Santonja, continues its progression and does so exponentially. We’ll have more news in September. Maybe the Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger himself and IFBB President Rafael Santonja will communicate it in person. In any case, be prepared to enjoy: and there are only six weeks to the big event of the year: the muscle, strength, agility and beauty together in one venue to satisfy those who love our healthy lifestyle and keeping fit: the Arnold Classic Europe, Casa de Campo, the largest park capital of the continent. For this fourth edition, scheduled for the next 26, 27 and 28 of September in Madrid, the organization is planning such an ambitious program that we can already announce that ACE 2014 will place the grand event to a stage never imagined to date on the old continent. In regard to the outlines WE THANK: of this new edition, the professional Bodybuilding and Fitness competitions, the great EXPO, as well as an intensive program of different sports, both Olympic and non-Olympic, make up the exciting menu on which we will be bringing you new details. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to THE SHOW. ACE Pro PROFESIONAL BODYBUILDING and FITNESS. ONLY IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR STRONG EMOTIONS Indeed, the first major thematic section of this issue is, in its own right, about the professional bodybuilding and fitness championships, that is, the Pro Show, set for Saturday 27th of September in the Madrid Arena. We can elaborate to you, in the most thorough way possible, how this fourth edition of the prestigious event will happen, the second most important in the calendar of the Professional League after teh Olympia Weekend, but we bet you are hoping WE THANK: we will go over the familiar names in the competition line. So let’s dive right into this provisional list of athletes who have already expressed their intention to be in Madrid to take part in the ACE 2014. HEATH STARTS THE MEN’S OPEN LIST BrEAKING NEWS! WILLIAM BONAC ALREADY HAS HIS INVITATION FOR ACE PRO 2014 “HEAtH plans to defend his ACE Pro title.” The competitor list could not have been started in a better way, as the current Mr Olympia and ACE Pro Champion, Phil Heath, already expressed his wish to return to Madris next September to defend his title. This is how Phil Heath himself conveyed it to Dr Santonja, and in order that no mishaps occur, the numebr one in the professional ranking will redeploy all of his artillery at the facilities of the Madrid Arena to the delight of us all. Another athlete who also has been very interested in returning is fellow American Dexter Jackson. The athlete from Jacksonville already fought for the first ACE titule, held in the 2011 season, against an intractable Victor Martinez, and we have no doubt he will again offer a fantastic show. At the close of this issue we received with great joy the invitation already issued to William Bonac, one of the revelations of the Professional League this season, and who will travel to Spain for the first time. DExtEr JACKSoN took part in the first ACE Pro, and now he could return next September. On the official ACE portal (www.arnoldclassiceurope.com) you will find more details about each of the disciplines and the first tentative schedules. One aspect to which we want to return and emphasize is about the richness and variety of the sports events that are present each year at the ACE, and that also strengthen edition after edition to provide us with a unique experience. Indeed, ACE has become the largest multisport meeting point in the old continent, with the widest possible offer for everyone. Enthusiasts of contact sports have already found in Arnold Fighters their annual date wit an amateur, semi-professional and professional menu as intense as possible. We could not leave out the emblematic amateur bodybuilding and fitness contests, that each year, systematically, exceed the previously established record of participation. The family of strength sports will also return with all the modalities that we have been enjoying in previous editions, the popular strongman, arms wrestling, weightlifting or powerlifting. ACE will also remain a channeler of sport trends like cross training or parkour. T EXT : lEE labrada PH TOS: aN GEl MOlIN Er , lEE labrada THE CARB BALANCING ACT: Contest Peaking On a Reduced Carb Diet T hese days, chances are that if you’re watching your waistline, you’re also watching your carbs. Carbohydrates are one of the “Big Three,” the macronutrients that your body gets from food (the other two are protein and fat.) Carbohydrates are your muscle’s preferred source of energy for resistance training, so your diet has to be sufficiently high in carbs to help you power through your workouts. On the other hand, if you consume too many carbs, you could end up singing the Spare Tire Blues. What to do? In this article we examine ways that you can use a reduced carb diet with your resistance training to help you get leaner and more muscular faster--- without burning away your hard-earned muscle tissue. Not everyone is interested in competing as a bodybuilder, but you can sure learn a thing or two about dieting from them. Having gotten my start in competitive bodybuilding in the late ‘70s, I experienced the infancy of the modern-day low-carb diet, first hand. The late Dr.Robert Atkin’s first book, Dr.Atkin’s Diet Revolution, was published in 1975 and quickly grew in popularity as the diet du jour. Bodybuilders were amongst those who jumped on the bandwagon, and low carb diets became part of the precontest training regimen of many of the top champions. Three-time Mr.Olympia Frank Zane and Mr.Universe Tom Platz were early proponents of low carb diets. So was yours truly, an up-andcoming young Lee Labrada. The common wisdom in those days was to limit carbohydrate intake to just 40 grams per day, usually consumed just before the workout. I initially liked the low carbohydrate approach because it curbed my appetite, an advantage for any precontest dieter. But this came with a price. My low carb diet also had the nasty side effect of leaving me tired and listless for much of the day. The workouts aggravated this effect. Of the small amount of carbs that I did allot myself each day, I ingested all prior to my workout. This provided me with a temporary burst of energy which my muscles gobbled up during weight training. After the workout, it was back to being tired and listless again. To make matters worse, sometimes I ran out of energy during the workout—a “crash.” Crashing was no fun, because at that point the only way I could go on was by the sheer strength of my will. The low carb diet worked well for some competitive bodybuilders of that era, allowing them to get ripped to ridiculously low levels of body fat. But there was another big drawback to the low carb approach: it also cost bodybuilders valuable muscle size. That’s because strict , low carb diets can wreak havoc on muscle tissue. Sure, you burn lots of fat, but you also burn lots of muscle. WHY? First off, stores of glycogen (stored glucose from carbohydrates) inside your muscle tissue and liver are compromised when your food intake is too low in dietary carbohydrates. And with low stores of glycogen, it is difficult for your muscles to exert the sustained, high intensity effort required to lift weights. That means your strength gets compromised. When that happens, your training poundages go down and there is less muscle stimulation, which sets you up for muscle loss. After all, your body never keeps what it doesn’t need. Secondly, when you diet, you’re almost always in a hypocaloric state (taking in less food calories than you burn on a daily basis.) When you’re hypocaloric, your body looks for the “missing energy” it needs to function in other places. After all, it’s not getting it from the food! Your body can get the “missing calories” from two places: stored body fat (you want to reduce this!) or muscle (“don’t you dare touch this,” you say!) Unfortunately, muscle tissue is easy to break down. The amino acids in muscle can be broken down and converted to glucose for energy by your liver. During an intense weight training workout, the lack of carbohydrates forces your body to break down muscle tissue to supply the energy. Not a good thing! Carbohydrates are actually proteinsparing. “ When blood sugar levels are low or are suboptimal during exercise, the body will initiate the creation of new sugar by breaking down glycogen (stored sugar) and protein for amino acids through Cori Cycling and other processes. Sugar is used exclusively for anaerobic energy production contracting a muscle, lifting weights and even allout sprints are examples of anaerobic exercises. If your blood sugar is uneven or low, the ability of the muscle to forcefully contract and to do so fully is slightly impaired. This results in suboptimal muscle performance,” says Douglas Kalman MS, RD, FACN. By the early ‘80’s, low carb diets had fallen from favor with bodybuilders for these obvious reasons. This set the stage for the high-carb dieting paradigm that has ruled the pre-contest bodybuilding diet until the last few years. The Achilles’ heel of the high-carb diet is that too much of a good thing can also be counterproductive making it hard for you to lose as much body fat as you want. Excess carbs will stimulate an abnormally high insulin (a fat storage hormone) response, causing you to gain unwanted body fat. The question then, is: How many carbs do I consume to get ultra-lean and ripped, while holding on to all of my hard-earned muscle? The answer is, enough to fill your glycogen reserves (stored carbohydrates) in both your muscle tissue and liver, plus enough to power your workouts. That leaves very little dietary carbohydrates left over at the end of a day to turn into fat. Here’s one way to integrate a reduced carb diet into your precontest training regimen. THe Reduced caRb dieT During the low carb phase of your training, I recommend consuming 150-200 grams of complex carbohydrates per day for an average male weighing 200 pounds. This works out to about .75-1.0 grams of complex carbs per pound of bodyweight. That’s higher than is typically considered a low-carb regimen, but keep in mind that as a bodybuilder, you are hardly the typical person. You have a higher than average amount of muscle, train hard with weights, and are in better shape. That being the case, your carbohydrate requirements will be higher. You should stick to consuming only complex carbs from sources such as oatmeal, whole grain cereal, yams, sweet potatoes, whole grain rice, beans, lentils, and peas. That’s because these complex carbohydrates are broken down slowly by your body, keep your blood sugar stable, and keep your insulin levels down. Complex carbs such as these are considered to have a low “glycemic index,” a measure of how quickly a carbohydrate is broken down by your body into blood sugar. Remember, it’s necessary to keep your blood sugar level as stable as possible in order to manage your insulin levels. Consume your carbohydrates along with proteins and fats, never alone. When combined with the aforementioned, MEal 1: 20g of carbohydrates the breakdown of carbs is slowed down even more. Take in 50 grams of your carbs in the meal prior to your workout (about 1-1.5 hours before), then 70 more grams in the meal immediately after your workout. This is for two reasons. One, the carbs immediately prior to your workout will help to fuel your training. Two, the carbs immediately after your workout will replenish glycogen stores in your muscle tissue. Replenishing glycogen stores within 30 minutes after a workout will enable you to take advantage of your body’s compensatory mechanism, enabling you to actually store more carbs as glycogen. Your post workout meal should always be your highest-carb meal of the day. If you follow the guidelines that we’ve discussed, you will have about 50-100 grams of carbohydrates left to dispense over your remaining meals. Of this remaining amount, I recommend consuming up to 75% of it in the meals prior to your pre-workout meal, with the remaining 25% in the meal after your post-workout meal: MEal 2: 20 grams MEal 3: 20 grams MEal 4 (pre-workout): 50 grams WORKOUT MEal 5 (post workout): 70 grams MEal 6: 20 grams On days when you don’t train, cut your carbohydrate intake back to 100 grams, spread out evenly over each meal. You won’t need the extra carbs on your day off. One important caveat: whether you are training that day or not, be sure to consume sufficient protein and healthy fats (most fats of plant or fish origin) to fuel your body and help recuperation. Says Douglas Kalman MS, RD, FACN], “When you do not eat sufficiently, weight loss and muscle loss can occur 24 hours per day. If your meal timing and overall nutrient ratio is sub par, this can greatly hurt your ability to gain muscle since the effects of progressive resistance overload make your muscles scream for the right nutrients at the right times. Under eat or eat at the wrong times and watch your muscles grow... smaller and not stronger. Understanding nutrient timing is paramount to avoiding inappropriate muscle loss.” TRaiNiNG ON THe LOW caRb dieT… It is important to structure your resistance training so that it is brief, heavy and intense. Brief workouts consume fewer calories than longer workouts, which will help you conserve energy so that you don’t feel beat for the rest of day. High intensity workouts are also more productive for stimulating muscle tissue --that means “GROWTH.” High intensity workouts burn glycogen and carbs primarily. Combined with the meal carbing regimen I’ve recommended, you’ll be a like an F-16; powerful, yet fueled up just enough to get the job done. caRdiO ON THe LOW caRb dieT … To help the fat burning pro- cess along on a low carb diet, there’s nothing like adding a little cardio to your workout. Cardio should take the form of 30 minutes of stationary bicycling, stair-stepping, or jogging on the treadmill, immediately following the workout, 3-5 times per week. While on a low carb diet, keep your cardio intensity level to 70-80% of your maximum heart rate. By doing your cardio following your workout, you’re in a state where you’ve used up the glycogen necessary to train your muscles with heavy weights, and your body will be ready to switch over to burning stored fat for energy. If you can’t do your cardio after your training because of time constraints, or because you are too tired, try doing it in the morning, prior to breakfast. Because you are in a fasted state upon awakening, you are already burning fat for energy. Speaking of energizing, there’s no reason that you have to feel tired when you are on a low carb training regimen. The idea is balancing your carbs so that you have enough to fuel your activities, but not more. Try this reduced carb training regimen 4-6 weeks prior to your bodybuilding competition or to improve your physique for the summer. Your reward will be a leaner, more muscular body that turns heads everywhere you go! Editor’s Note: Lee Labrada is Secretary of the IFBB Research, Exercise & Education Committee. CLASSIC BODYBUILDING (-171 cm) C ategory of 6 athletes where Tomasz Laszko (Poland, 5th place) improved his performance in 2013 and beat the debutante Onur Kaya (Turkey, 6th), although another newcomer, Herve Costa (France, 4th) surpassed him. In the medals, in the absence of the 2013 champion - Gabriele Giansante - runner-up Antonio Primiceri (Italy, bronze) seemed the favorite but crashed with the two Spanish representatives and never exceeded the aesthetic or Javier Perez, or the defined Jesus Rodal. Winner: Jesús rodal (spain). Athlete of the Canary Islands dominated the final, with his excellent definition. This has been his best result and now his goal is to qualify for the 2015 European Games in Baku. JESÚS RODAL Jesus Rodal (Spain) won the first gold for our country, surpassing also Spanish, Javier Perez. The canary athlete, 36, is in the best shape of his career. The podium of Classic Bodybuilding -171 cm has a fantastic Spanish color. Javier Pérez (silver) and Jesus Rodal (gold) defeated the Italian favorite Antonio Primicieri (bronze), 2013 runnerup. CLASSIC BODYBUILDING (-175 cm) S o high was the level of the 13 participants that the 2011 European Champion, Przemyslaw Zokowski (Poland, 7th place) and runner-up in the World and European Cup of 2010, Andrej Varga (Slovakia, 5th place); didnt reach the medal zone. Ahead of them we saw a newcomer like Jivko Petkov (Bulgaria, 4th place) and Tomas Horak (Czech Rep., Bronze) growing after his 2012 World Championship junior title. Winner: Tomas BendoraITIs (lithuania). Despite his short experience - he just won the 2014 Oslo Grand Prix - his physique was impeccable and he pulled a perfect score, unreachable for the nationalized Iraqi Danish Mohamad Aziz Ali (silver), almost 9 years younger. The podium of Classic Bodybuilding -175 cm saw the arrival of a new generation of athletes. Young Ali Aziz (Denmark, silver) and Tomas Horak (Czech Rep., Bronze) showed progression but yielded to the impressive quality of the Lithuanian, 35, Tomas Bendoraitis. A punto de cumplir los 31 años, Alexander Kuschuk (Rusia) demostró ser el más completo de la categoría e incluso rozó posteriormente el título absoluto. ALExANDER KUSCHUK Hard, dry, with thin skin and a lot of details of the body, Tomas Bendoraitis is the revelation of this 2014. He left Bodybuilding to enter this discipline, where he already added his second major title of the season, plus the 2014 European Overall. TOMAS BENDORAITIS CLASSIC BODYBUILDING (-180 cm) T he largest category, with 17 athletes, mostly veterans who witnessed a slight decline: the 2012 Master Worlds runner-up, Serge Rouze (France, 11th place) did not reach the final, nor did Bohumil Stepanek (Czech Republic, 8th place.) finalist in 2013. Reaching it was the Spanish Marc Marsellach (4th place) who never had access to the medals, but who was always ahead of the Estonian expert Imre Vahi (6th place) and irish Lukasz Chwaszcza (5th place). In the medals, Oleh Kakorin (Ukraine) repeated his 2013 bronze with the same points as the Polish national runner-up, Hubert Kulczynski (silver). Winner: alexander kuschuk (russia). The winner of the 2014 Cup of Russia dominated from start to finish and took his second title of the season. He is destined to be one of the stars of the sport in the coming years. A new generation of athletes dominated the CBB category of -180 cm: Hubert Kulczynski (Poland, silver) arrives as the great promise of his country, while Alexander Kuschuk (Russia, gold) is already a reality this season after winning the Cup of Russia. The oldest, at age 26, is Oleh Kakorin (Ukraine, bronze) who kept the metal already achieved in the 2013 edition. EUROPEAN BODYBUILDING CHAMPIONSHIPS CLASSIC BODYBUILDING (+180 cm) Two Croatians; Drazen Vrbancic (silver) and Sandi Imerovic (bronze) seconded the fabulous Czech Boris Orava (gold) that managed to be the second European champion with a perfect score in the final. W ith 16 athletes in the category Spain was on the verge of a new medal with Juan Becerra (4th place) who entered the final in a three way tie with Croats Vrbancic (silver) and Imerovic (bronze). Even after the mandatory he was ahead of Imerovic, but his static routine cost him the medal. Still, he beat the two Polish veterans Tomasz Winnicki (6th place) and Krzysztof Rodkiewicz (5th place). Winner: BorIs orava (czech rep.). Despite being the youngest finalist, he showed a great security by defeating everuone and especially the 2014 runnerup, Drazen Vrbancic that had to settle for his second continental silver. His excellent structure allowed a victory that could have repeated in the overall, by reaching greater muscle maturity. CLASSIC BODYBUILDING OVERALL C ertainly the judges only considered for the Overall victory the Lithuanian Bendoraitis and Russian Kuschuk, one step ahead of the rest. Nevertheless, great credit that of Jesus Rodal to enter the 3rd position, ahead of the Czech Orava (4th) and the Georgian Gagua (5th). In the final battle, Bendoraitis took advantage of his obvious muscle hardness to compensate for their difference in centimeters (174 to 177 of Kuschuk) and kilos (78 for 82) against his Russian opponent. Thus, by 8 points to 10; historic victory for this athlete of 35 who is in the best shape of his life. BORIS ORAVA Despite his odd hairstyle, Boris Orava proved to be a great athlete, at age 29. This gold medal positions him to qualify for higher goals for next season. TOMAS BENDORAITIS Bendoraitis Tomas (Lithuania), Overall European 2014 Classic Bodybuilding Champion. Jesus Rodal (3rd), Tomas Bendoraitis (1st) and Alexander Kuschuk (2nd) were the three most prominent champions by the judges, in the fight for the overall title of Classic Bodybuilding. The head of the IFBB Judges Committee and EBFF Vice President, Mr. Pawel Filleborn, presented the trophy to the overall winner, the Lithuanian Bendoraitis. EUROPEAN BODYBUILDING CHAMPIONSHIPS BODYBUILDING LIGHT(-70 kilos) C ategory of 12 athletes where medals were distributed among the favorites, not without intrigue. Miroslav Skadra (Slovakia), winner in 2013 almost stayed outside the podium, behind a harder Ferhad Gruliev (Azerbaijan, 4th) who was avenged by his compatriot Teymur Aslanov (silver) who has made the jump from Classic Bodybuilding, protected by his larger size. Germans Andreas Jall (5th) and Daniel Priewisch (6th) completed a final without the Spanish. Winner: roman Iushchenko (ukraine). In the weight limit, his muscles looked full and large, with a very complete physique without weaknesses. He should only increase his definition to complete his margin for improvement. An interesting podium in the Lightweights with the Champion of Europe in 2013, in classic bodybuilding, Teymur Aslanov (Azerbaijan, silver), surpassing the 2013 European champion in the category, Miroslav Skadra (bronze Slovakia). In turn, both were surpassed by the very complete Roman Iushchenko (Ukraine, gold) that in 2013 could only be bronze. ROMAN IUSCHENKO Very improved compared to 2013, Roman Iuschenko (Ukraine) took gold, dominating every round of the competition. Welterweights podium with a rookie Antonio Muriana (Germany, silver), an accomplished Daniel Miklecic (Croatia, gold) and the promising Romeo Zon (France, bronze). BODYBUILDING WELTERS (-75 kilos) DANIEL MIKLECIC Runner-up in 2013, Daniel Miklecic (Croatia) has achieved being proclaimed European Champion -75 kilos in 2014. C ategory of only 8 athletes where, in the absence of the 2013 champion Jan Sotak (Slovakia), the other two medalists Miklecic Danijel (Croatia, gold) and Raigo Kuusnomm (Estonia, 5th), had a good opportunity to ascend. Miklecic succeed but Kuusnomm was not as fit and fell back, beating only the Russian Alexander Riabinin (6th). The silver went to debutant Antonio Murania (Germany), thanks to his good legs and waist that allowed him to overcome the French Romeo Zon (bronze), and the Azeri Yalchin Mammadov (4th) arriving as the European Lightweight runner-up, in 2013. Winner: danIel mIklecIc (croatia). Defined and vascularized, with good lines, this Croatian veteran of 40 years has managed to climb to the top, despite being the oldest of all the participants in the Welterweights. BODYBUILDING MID-LIGHTWEIGHT (-80 Kilos) C ategory of 17 athletes where two consecrated medallists like the 2010 European Champion, Peter Kokoska (17th) and Oscar Marín (11th) failed to enter the final. Neither did the Spaniards Eduardo León (13th) and Jose Medina (7th) who brushed it. In this Final the previous two favorites, Russian Aleksey Denisov (silver in 2012) and Sergey Moskvin (gold in 2012 in the welterweights) were overcome by the 2011 champion of the Mediterranean: the Italian Simone Schirilo (gold). So, Denisov was silver and Moskvin bronze. Out of the medals there were many changes of position between the semifinal and the final, Tobias Gerbliger (Germany, 6th place) went from more to less and ended overcome by Barbe Charles (France, 5th place) and especially by Artur Szudrowicz (Poland , 4th place). Winner: sImone schIrIlo (Italy). With only 26 years, there is no limit in sight for this versatile bodybuilder. The Balearic Raul Gutierrez dominated the final with a perfect score and was always ahead of all his rivals throughout the competition. At 34 he is in his best and made the Spanish anthem play again, like at the Mediterranean in Malta 2011. The Italian Simone Schirilo always dominated the final, despite being the youngest athlete, with his 26 years. His small waist and broad ridges made him overcome taller and heavier athletes. SIMONE SCHIRILO The podium of the Light-Middleweight with Russian Aleksei Denisov (silver) and Sergey Moskvin (bronze), seconding the brilliant Italian Simone Schirilo (gold). Three prestigious medalists. Spain failed to classify any of its athletes to the final three. BODYBUILDING MIDDLEWEIGHTS (-85 Kilos) W ith 3 Spanish to 2 Polish, everything pointed to a festival for the audience at the delivery of medals in this category of 17 competitors. RAÚL GUTIéRREz Modeled on to the previous situation, on the podium of the Middleweights with different protagonists: two veteran athletes like the Poles Mariusz Balazinsky (silver) and Krzysztof Skryplonek (bronze), seconding the youngest: the Spanish Raul Gutierrez (gold) who made a memorable competition. The ceremony didn’t began well with Alberto Alonso - ACE 2012 finalist - 6th place, overtaken by veteran Danilo Furiosi (Italy, 5th) at 46 years; and Andres Corrales (4th) one step away from the medals, thanks to his great posing routine. The last part of the ceremony itself was anthological, with his fantastic proportions and muscle density, Raúl Gutiérrez - ACE 2011 finalist - signed an impressive return to competition defeating the rocky Krzysztof Skryplonek (Poland, bronze), a finalist last year in the Middle-Lightweight, and a veteran (44 years) Mariusz Balazinski (Poland, silver), quite a former World Champion of Classic Bodybuilding. Winner: raúl GuTIérrez (españa). The Mallorcan is becoming, at age 34, the best athlete of the Balearic Islands. He knows perfectly how to manage his international appearances. EUROPEAN BODYBUILDING CHAMPIONSHIPS BODYBUILDING MID-HEAVYWGHT. (-90 kilos) W ith the Spaniards Antonio Tejera (12th place) and Alexis Hernandez (9th place) out of the final 16 in this category of athletes, the public enjoyed seeing the struggle of well-known men. Two former European champions like Vugar Verdiyev (Azerbaijan, bronze) and Zoran Kolewski (Macedonia, 14th) were never at their best; taking this opportunity was Ott Kiivikas (Estonia, silver) to achieve a new continental second place in a splendid season for him. Out of the medals, Vladimir Iacovlev (Moldova, 4th), Rui Nascimento (Portugal. 5th) and Patrycjusz Wroblewski (Poland, 6th) were always in a pocket, very close from the semifinal. Winner: sImon lada (Poland). The big winner was former European Junior Champion who, besides being the youngest, had the best scores in every round. The surprise would continue later on, when he also won the Overall. Soon he will be a genuine IFBB World title contender. A lot of quality and prestige on the podium of the Middle-Heavyweights: Kiivikas Ott (Estonia, silver) successfully defended his best result at the continental championships; Simon Lada (Poland, gold) is no longer the junior champion, if not the Overall champion and Verdiyev Vugar (Azerbaijan, bronze) could not repeat the gold medal, but remained at the podium, at 39. SIMON LADA Simon Lada (Poland) was the revelation of these championships. He began winning his category of -90 kilos and ended up taking the Overall title. He is among the few that can claim to have been the European Junior and Senior Champion, in his career. BODYBUILDING LGHT. HEAVYWEIGHT (-95 kilos) T he new category of -95 kilos had 12 athletes, but no Spanish. The judges had it easy outside of the medals: Wojciech Pieczaba (Poland, 6th) never seemed to overcome Dragos Popescu (Romania, 5th) or the 2012 TOMASz PABINIAK Never clearly imposing in any round, the Polish Tomasz Pabikiak achieved a gold medal for his consistency and his fighting spirit throughout the entire competition. International Champion, Rabi Fakhro (Sweden, 4th). However, the medals were unclear at all times. Pabiniak (Poland, gold), Chakib (France, silver) and Kovac (Slovakia, bronze) were always within 1 point of difference. First round: 11:12:13, second round: equal (but folded in 2) and third round: 11:12:11. None of the three had reached the continental Bodybuilding finals. Winner: Tomasz PaBInIak (Poland). The 2012 lassic Bodybuilding Champion was the most consistent. By only 3 points after 3 rounds, Pabikial now has another continental gold medal in his cabinet. There was not a more equal podium than that of the Light Heavyweights with the three medalists separated by only 1 point in each round. So Bouhlal Chakib (Italy, silver) took a subchampionship which he failed to secure to the last pose, taken away by Peter Kovac (Slovakia, bronze) who could even aspire for gold. Always the most consistent in every round, the rocky Tomasz Pabiniak (Poland, gold) took the title and valuable points for his country in the team competition. EUROPEAN BODYBUILDING CHAMPIONSHIPS BODYBUILDING HEAVYWEIGHTS (-100 Kilos) Victor De Gustin (Spain, bronze) was the great Spanish asset in the final of the Heavyweights, where he was even near the silver that went to the Polish Przemyslaw Owczarek (left). What was never in doubt was the triumph: Slovenian Miha Zupan was always ahead on the cards, in all rounds. C ategory of 11 athletes where the winners of 2013, Reza Zinatlov (Azerbaijan, 4th) lost his gold medal and Georgi Slavov (Bulgaria, 5th) lost the bronze to much fitter opponents. One of them was Victor De Gustin (bronze) who this year aims at all national titles and fought for silver with the Polish Przemyslaw Owczarek, 4th in the light heavyweight in 2013, with whom he tied in the semifinals. Completing the Final were Italian Fabio Romagnolo (6th), current national champion of Italy. Winner: mIha zuPan (slovenia). After winning the silver medal (2012) and bronze (2013), this time it could only be gold. With his ultra definition, the house brand, his size allowed him to dominate the finals and take, at 39, the best win of his career. BODYBUILDING SUPER HEAVYWEIGHTS (+100 Kilos) C ategory of 12 athletes which was not as impressive as expected, considering that it starred Mikhail Sidorychev (Russia, bronze) and Simone Costantini (Italy, 7th place) - champion and runner-up of the category - were not in top form and were defeated by younger athletes. One of them was the Dutch Michael Muzo (28) who even took the best mark in round 3. We saw him debut at the ACE 2011 and he did not enter the semifinals. Now he is already a championship contender. Completing the final were discrete Scandinavians Leif Hestad (Norway, 5th) and Lars Ostling (Sweden, 6th), of large size. Winner: arTur kovalov (ukraine). Won the category in his first attempt, although he internationally debuted at the 2010 World Cup, where he didn’t qualify for the semifinals. Much improved, he will soon enter the cards for the World or the Pro Circuit. MIHA zUPAN After many years standing at the gates of the titles, multiple medalist Miha Zupan (Slovenia) finally achieved the gold medal in the Europeans. ARTUR KOVALOV The Ukrainian Artur Kovalev returned to his country with the coveted gold medal in the heavyweights. With 110 kilos, he points to the Pro Circuit. The podium of the Super Heavyweights with Michael Muzo (Netherlands, silver) signing a spectacular debut at the Europeans like Artur Kovalev (Ukraine, gold). The slight disappointment was the bronze of the favorite Mikhail Sidorychev (Russia) who didn’t defended his title from 2011, despite his 128 kilos of weight on the scale. BODYBUILDING MIXED PAIRS Always spectacular, the category of pairs delighted us with 8 teams lavishing elegance and showmanship in the poses. A pity not to have Spanish representation in this mode dominated by the countries of Eastern and Central Europe. Angela Derzapf and Antonio Muriana (Germany) took the gold medal in pairs. Despite their smaller size, the quality of both muscle and their rapport was enough to clinch the title. Szymon Lada won the overall title, although his size was not the most impressive. With only 89 kilos, neither Zupan (99 kg.) or Pabiniak (93 kg.) orKovalev (100 kg.) Could surpass him in the cards. Jana Bendova and Ales Reman (Czech Rep.) gave the surprise reaching silver medal, despite their seniority. Very complete in the mandatory poses, they reached the podium against prognosis. BODYBUILDING OVERALL The fight with 8 champions seeking the Overall title was spectacular. As usual, two athletes are always in the spotlight of judges and, in this case, they were the Polish Lada and Slovenian Zupan. A priori Zupan seemed the favorite, with 10 kilos more and with a tremendous definition. Nevertheless, Lada showed the same hardness in the poses and even better proportions and aesthetics. Therefore, by a 3 point difference, aesthetics beat size and the former Classic champion European Champion was proclaimed the 2014 Overall European Bodybuilding Champion. Ljudmila Tuboltseva and Mihail Sidorychev (Russia) were the favorite couple, but only reached the bronze. A couple in real life, the two Moscow athletes offered a free routine, only surpassed by the champions. Miha Zupan returned to remain at the gates of success in the overall, and ceded the absolute title by 8-11. Relaxed, listening to the anthem of Poland, Szymon Lada was even more impressive, with his aesthetic proportions. In the picture, seconded by President Santonja and Mayor Campolier. B Y a r m a n d o s . m á r q u e z / / Spain captured the male Overall titles in the Master Bodybuilding category. Toni Gutierrez won a resounding victory in the Overall dominated by Spaniards. P H o T o s B Y a n G e L m o L I n e r o Another great moment for Spain in these championships: Javier Pérez, escorted by President Santonja and Vice President Filleborn, proclaiming the Overall Classic Bodybuilding Champion (Master). SANTA SUSANNA (II) JUNIOR & MASTER CHAMPIONSHIPS Dream image: six Spaniards fighting for the overall title of Master Bodybuilding: Carlos Menendez (6th), Antonio Sanchez (2nd), Toni Gutierrez (winner), Oscar Marin (4th), Jaime Aguilera (5th) and Rafael Vera (8th). The final posedown was more than a party, a tribute to Spanish bodybuilding. Junior & Master Champions of Europe by teams in 2014, Spain retained the title won on this stage in 2013. FEFF president, José Ramos welcomed to hear the Spanish anthem, in honor of all team members, accompanied by Dr. Rafael Santonja, IFBB President and D. Joan Campolier, mayor of Santa Susanna ; the talisman town for Spanish bodybuilding and fitness. The female categories also gave us important medals: Veronica Gallego took gold in Master Bodyfitness (-44 years). I s it the weather?, is it genetics?, is it the “mediterranean diet”? Whatever it is, Spain returned to be proclaimed Junior & Master European Champion by teams, demonstrating that though it is not constantly in the elite of certain senior subjects, when exceeding 40 years of age (35 in the case of women) Spanish athletes are at the top across Europe and especially in the male categories. There were a total of 198 points that left behind the Swedish 131 specialist in female categories - and the 105 of the Czech Rep. If we realize that Italy (87 points) and France (83 points) also entered the Top 5, the “Mediterranean diet” may have something to do in the longevity of athletes. Up to 6 Spanish athletes won gold in the Master Bodybuilding categories, creating an unprecedented overall with 7 athletes, with only the Russian Alexander Alekseev accompanying Rafael Vera, Carlos Menendez, Jaime Aguilera, Oscar Marín, Antonio Sanchez and Toni Gutierrez. The Spaniard from Barcelona won the overall title with a perfect score. If Slovakia made history in 2013 by winning all Bikini categories (5 wins), in 2014 Spain did something even more difficult by adding 6 wins from the 8 possible in this mode. As for women, the level was not so high. They are categories where genetics are above the work and where the international trend points to this Nordic, Slavic and Caucasian physique style. Still, there was the Jerez Veronica Gallego to achieve a well deserved gold medal. CAMPEONATOS DE &EUROPA JUNIOR Y MASTER EUROPEAN JUNIOR MASTER CHAMPIONSHIPS MASTER CLASSIC BODYBUILDING (40-49 years) W ith 11 athletes in the category, Spain began its recital placing its 3 representatives in the final and Cut and defined, Javier Pérez (gold) was about to sign a perfect score from the semi to the final. He lacked a point in the free routine round but still, he was unreachable for his rivals. was very close to take all the medals. Aleh Ryshkevich (Belarus, 6th) and the ever present in Santa Susanna, Serge Rouzé (France, 5th) never counted for medals but Antonio Perez (4th place) did, much improved in the final routine, and who is left at only 1 point from bronze wich ended up with Martin Hanzel (Sweden). JAVIER PéREz Spanish double in the final of Classic Bodybuilding Master (-49 years): Antonio Hernández (silver) and Javier Pérez (gold) dominated the category, throughout the competition. The Swede Martin Hanzel (bronze), could only reach the podium. MASTER CLASSIC BODYBUILDING (+50 years) W ith higher level and athletes than last year, it seemed that the Spanish John Davi (gold) could not defend his title in 2013 but he gradually rose until eliminating all rivals and signed a Winner: Javier Pérez (Spain). He was about to achieve a perfect score in the entire competition, (5-5-5-6) which reflected the unquestionable quality of his physique. His biggest rival was Antonio Hernandez Parra (silver) who had to work hard to the maximum to overcome the Swedish Hanzel in the final. JOHN DAVI Born in France but based in Alicante for almost two decades, the Parisian John Davi defended his title won in 2013 and contributed more points to the Spanish team, where he is one of the most beloved athletes. The Spanish anthem sounded again in his honor. The Swede Conny colossal Himersson (185 cm / 92 kg) could only reach silver, defeated by the Spanish John Davi (171 cm / 73 kg). The Irish James Cassidy (175 cm / 80 kg) completed the final, with the bronze medal. sensational routine (5 points) that ended shattering the hopes of victory of Conny Hilmersson (Sweden, silver), 15 centimeters taller and 18 kilos heavier. Behind the fight was to reach the bronze that was handed to Irish James Cassidy, who took advantage that the always in the form Raymond Cassar (Malta, 4th) was losing tone because he is also the official IFBB photographer and stress is not good travel companion. Behind both the Italian Giancarlo La Piana (5th) and Czech Ladislav Sroubek (6th), completed the awards ceremony. Winner: John Davi (Spain). An example of timeless quality, the French settled in Altea has already given 2 gold medals for Spain (2013 and 2014) and is one of our team. At 53 years old, he is here to stay to continue adding titles. OVERALL CLASSIC BODYBUILDING MASTER I t was a fratricidal duel between the two Spaniards, separated by a few kilos and a few centimetres denser John Davi - but by 12 years that are felt in the quality of skin. At 41, Javier Pérez fought the current in order to, deservedly, take the Overall title. Congratulations to both! Javier Perez (41 years) and John Davi (53), fight the Classic Bodybuilding Overall title. The splendid physique of Javier Perez (41 years), the European Champion Absolute Classic Bodybuilding Master. Listening to the national anthem, flanked by President Santonja and Vice President Filleborn. Europe has a new Spanish Overall master champion. Spain continued to garner gold medals in Masters Bodybuilding the category from the Light Heavyweight (-70 kilos): Jaime Aguilera reached the top of the podium, escorted by Allan Pages (France, silver) and Mario Hernandez (Spain, bronze) MASTER BODYBUILDING LIGHTWEIGHT (-70 Kilos; 40-49 years) O verwhelming Spanish dominance in this category of 7 athletes where the 3 Spanish representatives reached the final and almost, both won medals. The Andalusian Juan De Dios Mesa (4th) was the only in the team who did not achieve one , although his good proportions let him comfortably defeat the Turkish Seyhmus Urebe (6th) and German Michael Fackler (5th). Mario Augusto Hernández (bronze), showed his experience again and did not lose the chance to add another medal to his extensive trophy cabinet. He could not do anything to the definition of the French Alain Pages (silver), 5 years younger, which it the third Spanish representative that was commissioned in the final. Winner: Jaime aguilera (Spain). With a perfect score in the semifinal, Aguilera sported development, quality and definition; enough qualities to score the gold medal unopposed. JAIME AGUILERA Jaime Aguilera never got his gold medal threatened. Although his free routine can still improve his physique was incomparably the best in the category. CAMPEONATOS Y MASTER EUROPEAN JUNIORDE& EUROPA MASTERJUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS MASTER BODYBUILDING MIDDLEWEIGHT (-80 Kilos; 40-49 years) Escorted by the IFBB officials, Mr. Marco Bosco (Italy) and Mr. Guido Falk (Germany), Barcelona’s Oscar Marin (41, 78 kilos) added another gold medal to his impressive record. P ity Francisco Quintana (8th place) did not reach the semifinals in this category 10 athletes. The Czech Lubos Koumal (5th) and Austrian Christian Racan (6th) were not so far from his level, but ahead of him by a few points. Ahead of them classified the Italian Roberto Nuvoloni (4th), somewhat no man’s land: better than the previous, but far from the level of the medalists. The fight for the lower steps of the podium was decided by 1 point: Eric Miet (France, silver) took advantage of his hardness, in mandatory, and made up the better proportions of Swedish Fredrik Spang (bronze) with best score in the free routine . Winner: oScar marín (Spain). One of the most celebrated victories, not only for the love with which he is received in Santa Susanna, but because he made up for his poor result in the senior competition the day before. Much improved (harder, denser, with another swimsuit) Marin could exhibit his fabulous proportions (what calves!) And defeat all. OSCAR MARíN It was not easy, but the Frenchman Eric Miet (silver) and Swede Fredrik Spang (bronze), could only escort the Spanish Oscar Marin (gold) on the podium. The Spaniard removed the thorn from his low rating the day before, in the senior category. TONI GUTIéRREz Toni Gutierrez (gold) began his great day by winning the final of the light heavyweight (-90 kilos) of Bodybuilding Master. The German Karsten Wolf (silver) and Austrian Alexander Englitsch (bronze) could not prevent the Spanish to win the gold with a perfect score from the semifinals. MASTER BODYBUILDING LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT (-90 Kilos; 40-49 yrs.) V Hours of effort and training have their reward: Toni Gutierrez dominates the category of Master light heavyweight and sounds the Spanish anthem, accompanied by national coach Rafael Shepherd. ery equal category of 15 athletes where neither the balanced Jose Jimenez (11th), neither the aesthetic Fernando Asensio (10th) made it into the final, and neither did the Portuguese Pedro Tenreiro, narrowly (7th). In the final constant changes succeeded, with Ales Reman (Czech Rep. 6th) far from improving, but Danilo Furiosi (Italy, 5th), Dominic Schreda (Malta, 4th), Alexander Englitsch (Austria, bronze) and Karsten Wolf (Germany, silver) risking their positions to almost the “posedown”. Winner: Toni guTiérrez (Spain). He was the only thing that never changed: the Barcelona was so impressive (5-5-5) had never endangered his gold medal. Tight, vascularized outstandingly with his waist tuned like ever, his almost 87 kilos for his rivals were insurmountable. CAMPEONATOS Y MASTER EUROPEAN JUNIORDE& EUROPA MASTERJUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS MASTER BODYBUILDING HEAVYWEIGHT (+90 kilos; 40-49 years) W hen the Spanish crowd was celebrating what looked like a recital of our team, reached the climax to the last of the categories of the master under 50 years achieved. Of the 19 enrolled, 4 were Spaniards who were responsible for adding new points to the FEFF. Alfredo Fernandez (7th place) was the only one who did not reach the final, surpassed in the semifinals by Roland Bosman (Slovakia, 5th), Alberto Clementi (Italy, 4th) and Roberto Herránz (Spain, 6th). The popular “Billet” came fourth in the final, with his impressive 105 kilos, but eventually beaten by 1 point by the Slovak and the aesthetic Italian. In the medals, The Spanish representatives didn’t fail: Eduardo Urruticoechea (bronze) confirmed his great season and escorted the winner, making it difficult for the Norwegian Leif Hestad (Silver), larger in size.. Winner: anTonio Sánchez (Spain). A pleasant surprise, the aesthetic athlete started on team “B” with Herranz. However, his almost 99 kilos looked fabulous and could always get 2 points in each round, to the Norwegian. MASTER BODYBUILDING LIGHTWEIGHTS (-80 kilos; 50-59 years) V ANTONIO SáNCHEz Antonio Sanchez won the most important title of his career, at age 41. His almost 99 kilos for his rivals were unbeatable and contributed more points to the victory of Spain in teams. CARLOS MENéNDEz Carlos Menendez dominated the category of Lightweights (+ 50 years) from beginning to end with his aesthetics and excellent form. The final of Heavyweight Bodybuilding Master also had, like most, prize medals for the Spanish team: Leif Hestad (Norway, silver), Antonio Sanchez (Spain, gold) and Eduardo Urruticoetxea (Spain, bronze) reached the highest. ery close to entering the final José González (7th place), remained in this category of 11 athletes where we saw many familiar faces. Minoccari Maurizio (Italy, 6th) and Sigurkarl Adalsteinsson (Iceland, 5th) has never counted for medals but did so Alfonso Gomez (4th). Former European champions still competing and training each day to the fullest, for pleasure, at 56 years. His curious and fun routine put him in 2nd place, but in mandatory he was surpassed by the Russian Anatolii Shlein (bronze) and the German Karl Heinz Tiegel (silver). Winner: carloS menénDez (Spain). There was no doubt that gold was reserved for him. On his return to competition, also based in Altea Basque athlete gave no options. However, he should not neglected the progression of his friend Kharkhun, even more impressive than him, at the choreographic level. Fedir Khasalov, flanked by Mrs. Nieves Santonja and Miss. Tatiana Dolgokir (UKBFF), took the 2014 Men’s Fitness title of Europe. Fedir Khasalov, in his rutine. FEdIR kHASALOv The podium of Men´s Fitness with Nazar Kharkhun (Ukraine, silver), - the man with the most difficult athletic routine at the competition -; Fedir Khasalov (Ukraine, gold) that has reached the top after his continuous evolution since 2012 and Mihail Moruz (Romania, bronze), an athlete of 22 who is advancing rapidly. CAMPEONATOS DE EUROPA DE FITNESS EUROPEAN FITNESS CHAMPIONSHIPS BOdYFITNESS LOW CLASS (-158 cm) V ronica Gallego returned to stay at the gates of glory. If she took silver in the Master division in 2013, this year she was about to strike gold in the senior division. She entered the final as leader, with 1 point ahead of the German Angela Derzapf but finished only one point behind (8 to 7) in a very tight finish. Less fortunate was Vanessa Blesa who didn’t reach the Top 6 and qualified in a discreet 14th place. Winner: ANGELA dErzAPF (Germany). Favorite after winning the 2014 WLC, the elegant German athlete could only overcome Veronica by a majority simply protected by her toned physique that went further in the final. Timeless beauty in the Low Class, with the veteran athletes monopolizing the top positions and outdoing the “senior” athletes: Sylwia Taczała (Poland; 6th place with 25 years); Maria Eriksson (Sweden, 4th place 49 years: The oldest athlete competing in this discipline); Veronica Gallego (Spain; silver with some stunning 38 years); Angela Derzapf (Germany, gold with 32 years), Evalinda Aarbaag (Sweden; bronze with 43 years) and Silvia Cechinato (Italy; 5th place with 32 years). Spain won its only medal in Bodyfitness thanks to the extraordinary Veronica Gallego from Alicante (right) that reached a silver medal like in 2013 - even more valuable because it is the senior category. Germany’s Angela Derzapf (gold) and the Swedish Evelinda Aarvaag (bronze) completed the podium. ANgELA dERzAPF TIINA vASkELAINEN The Bodyfitness finalists -163 cm had it very difficult to classify, ahead of 22 other rivals: Vilma Salaseviciuté (Lithuania, 6th place), Petra Urbankova (Czech Rep., 4th place), Antonina Lasukova (Russia, silver); Tiina Vaskelainen (Finland, gold), Carina Isaksson (Sweden, bronze) and Darola Kruusik (Estonia, 5th place). BOdYFITNESS MId-LOW CLASS (-163 cm) U ndoubtedly the hardest of the categories with 28 athletes who compelled a gruelling qualifying round in which the Spanish María Bozinowska and Laura Sabino fell. Youth and experience on the podium of the Mid-Low Class of Bodyfitness: 21 years of Antonina Lasukova (silver), contrasted with the incredible 48 year Carina Isaksson (bronze) comfortably double her age. The winner, Tiina Vaskelainen of 33 years, appears to show the perfect age at which the body reaches maximum muscle quality. Such was the equality in the category that the final was so tight that there were barely 12 points of difference between the champion and the 6th place. Tiina Vaskelainen (gold) and Antonina Lasukova (silver) won their respective metals by statistical criteria, while Petra Urbankova who entered the final with gold in her hand dropped to 4th place even losing the bronze to the fireproof Carina Isaksson (48 years) who reached the final in her best condition, also ahead of the Estonian Darola Kruusik (5th place). Winner: TIINA vASKELAINEN (Finland). She was able to deliver the best version of herself in the final and take advantage of the statistical criteria to win and achieve the best win of her career. It won’t be easy for her to repeat this. With 22 athletes registered, these were the top 6: Kinga Golobiewska (Poland, 6th place), Lucia Jakesova (Czech Rep., 4th place); Federica Ghezzi (Italy; silver) that comfortably justified her overall win as European Master Champion 2014; Olena Chumakova (Ukraine, gold) who has been the revelation of the season after her triumph at the WLC in Kiev and here in Santa Susanna; Eva Rusan (Croatia, bronze) and Laura Kivari (Finland, 5th place). The three medalists from Bodyfitness -168 cm provided a somewhat higher average age, demonstrating that muscle quality and training are the best anti-aging therapy: Federica Ghezzi, 49; Olena Chumakova 32 and Eva Rusan, 34 years. OLENA CHUMAkOvA BOdYFITNESS MId-TALL CLASS (-168 cm) T here were 22 athletes who gathered in this category where we saw the highest average age of all participants, with more than half over 30 years and even Federica Ghezzi taking silver at her incredible 49 years. Equality in the final was the most striking feature of the category. Winner: OLENA ChuMAKOvA (ukraine). It never appeared that she was going to have trouble, given her obvious quality and that she was coming from winning in her category at the World ladies Cup in Kiev, a month back. Shortly after winning the overall, she is confirmed as the favorite for the 2014 World Cup. BOdYFITNESS TALL CLASS (+ 168 cm) C ategory of 17 athletes where the Spanish Patricia Barber failed to enter the finals and finished in 16th place. Very renewed line up of athletes where we saw the Azeri Elena Kirschina (silver) continued being liked by the judges, but does not end up reaching the title. Surprise to see how the Russian settled in Ukraine, Elena Guseva (silver) who left the Bikini competition to enter, on a good foot, in this discipline. Winner: KINGA SzWEdA (Poland). At 29, this elegant 171 cm athlete surprised all of her opponents, as she didn’t have a brilliant record. Nonetheless, her form was excellent, showing no excessive hardness, and her proportions were as good as those of other medallists. kINgA SzwEdA The podium of Bodyfitness (+168 cm) with Elena Kirschina (Azerbaijan, silver) that still lacks something to be crowned champion of the discipline; Kinga Szweda (Poland, gold) who surprised with an aesthetic and complete physique and Elena Guseva (Ukraine, bronze) that has made the leap from the Bikini modality where this season she has won a silver medal at the WLC in Kiev. With a bit more muscle, Guseva achieved the same points as Kirschina and is postulated, at 32, as one of the alternatives for the Worlds in Canada. BOdYFITNESS OvErALL OLENA ChuMAKOvA CErTIFIES ThE uKrANIAN dOMINATION INN 2014 W ith the four winners in the competition, the judges did not hesitate for a moment: Olena Chumakova took the overall title with a perfect score of 5 points, while the Polish Sweda and the German Derzapf were tied at 14 points, somewhat away from the Finnish Vaskelainen who never counted on the cards. Chumakova’s victory now opens new possibilities for her: after her title in her category at the 2014 WLC, the athlete from Sevastopol has new options before her, such as turning professional with a good cache. If she doesn’t, after the entry into the Pro Circuit of the stunning Olga Karavaeva, Ukraine has found in Chumakova the perfect respite in order to lead an amateur team in the upcoming events. After winning the WLC in Kiev and the 2014 EBFF Overall, Olena Chumakova, of 32 years, faces the opportunity to turn professional or lead the national team of Ukraine. IFBB President, Dr Rafael Santonja and the Mayor of Santa Susanna, D. Joan Campolier, were in charge of proclaiming Ukrainian Olena Chumakova as the 2013 European Bodyfitness Overall Champion. She dominated the competition from start to finish and was always ahead of her rivals. WOMEN´S PhYSIQuE TALL CLASS (+163 cm) La italiana Ester Parisi, a sus 42 años, dio la gran sorpresa al batir a las 3 atletas rusas de la final, todas ellas más jóvenes. WOMEN´S PhYSIQuE OvErALL ThE IMPOSING SENIOrITY OF ESTEr PArISI I t was a constant of these European Championships to see how age was not a handicap to achieve victories. Very equal in height (162 and 164 cm, respectively) Chemous and Parisi presented very even physiques with similar proportions, so it was not easy for the judges to choose the most complete one. Such was the equality that only 1 point (8 to 7) gave the title - once again - to the oldest athlete. The 13 year difference of Parisi to Chemous (42 years of the Italian, to 29 of the Ukranian) played in her favor, in the overall. Joy in Italy for Ester Parisi’s victory in the overall. EUROPEAN FITNESS CHAMPIONSHIPS CAMPEONATOS DE EUROPA DE FITNESS BIKINI FITNESS LOW CLASS (-160 cm) W ith 25 athletes registered, Spain lost Cristina Martinez on the way to the semifinals, where Ana Hernandez could only be 11th and where young Zayra Fernandez had a great debut, achieving 7th place, just 1 point behind fireproof Inma Gual who, at 40 years, entered into a new final. As expected, Slovakia dominated the category with a doublet that Mary Paulette (bronze) was about to break, since she was only 1 point away from the contrasted Iveta Kuglerova (silver). Two athletes with experience in the Worlds, like Kikki Jenkins (4th place) and Kateryna Tkachenko (4th place), completed the Top 6. Winner: SABINA PLEvAKOvA (Slovakia). Graceful and slender, with only 21 years, she was the youngest of the finalists and looks set to dominate the category in the coming events. Her 159 cm are a handicap to being one of the best professionals in the future. The podium of the Bikini Low Class exuded quality: Iveta Kuglerova (Slovakia, silver) is a proven athlete, at 28 years and could only beat Mary Paulette (Spain, bronze) in the final by 1 point. The Castellón athlete entered the final with silver around her neck and options for gold but judges eventually surrendered to the new Slovak talent: Sabina Plevakova (gold). Both athletes will bring us new challenges very soon. Winner: dENISA LIPOvSKA (Slovakia). She was a favorite after her silver medal in 2013 and she met the forecasts. With his 165 cm, the redistribution of the categories has benefited her, since there are no athletes higher than her now, those fabulous proportions is what she’s displaying. The judges never hesitate in choosing the three best Bikini -166 cm athletes: Nina Ross (Great Britain, silver) is getting closer to winning her first major international competition; Denisa Lipovská (Slovakia, gold) improved her silver medal from 2013 and is already the great European dominator in this category, while Madelen Myhr (Sweden, bronze) had a sensational debut in the Europeans and has earned the right to be followed closely, as a contender for the title. dENISA LIPOkSkA Denisa Lipokska (Slovakia) always dominated the category, from the semifinals. More fortunate was María Pilar Muñoz who climbed to 10th place, being the best of the Spanish. The final allowed us to enjoy new talent, such as Karina Skowronska (Great Britain, silver) or Erika Kandrakova (Slovakia, 4th place) who, at 18, is already in the Slovak national team. We also saw how the two Estonian veterans Egle Eller (6th place) and Reet Reimets (bronze) show that the Baltic countries also have their share of talent in this modality. Unbeatable in proportions with her wide clavicles and narrow hips and also fabulous in placement; Olga Viazmetinova (Ukraine) drew attention in April 2013, with the bronze at the World Ladies Cup. Since then, she has continued to improve in every competition. Her future seems clear in the Professional Circuit. Winner: OLGA vIAzMETINOvA (ukraine). About to turn 30 years, no doubt she will be a professional athlete very soon. No one is more photogenic than her, with her wide clavicles and her unique way of posing. She just took off in Santa Susanna 2013 with a 6th place. This year, she has already taken the European, the World Ladies Cup and the Olympia Amateur in Prague. Who could stop her? In the end, everything was decided at the last moment, except the gold medal: Brigitta Békefi (Hungary) burst onto the international scene snatching the silver from Veronica Gulasova (Slovakia), both tied at 15 points. The same situation occurred between the Polish Maczynska (5th place) and Hilmarsdottir (6th place) from Iceland, both achieving 24 points; always behind the curvy German, Ramona Alb (4th place with 20 points). Winner: ALLA SEMENOvA (ukraine). After her bronze in 2013, the athlete from Kiev, choreographer by profession, seems destined to stardom. Her physique is the best by far and the test was her perfect score in the final (5 points). This year, she has won everything (WLC, the European, Olympia Amateur) and it seems that her future is in the USA. Beauty, style and elegance in abundance on the Bikini -172 cm podium: Brigitta Bekefi (Hungary, silver) had the best debut that could be expected and, at 22 years - the same as Veronica Gulasova (Slovakia, bronze) has a magnificent future before her. Nonetheless, both athletes are not yet at the level of the imposing Alla Semenova (Ukraine, gold). ALLA SEMENOvA Alla Semenova (Ukraine) has been one of the most outstanding Europeans for two seasons. Bronze at the 2013 European, she has now taken a step forward that allows her to qualify for the professional license. Still, she continues to believe that what is most important is to start a family. The genetically better endowed women were on the podium of the Bikini Super Tall Class. Paula Banot (Poland, silver) surprised everyone with her naturalness and astonishing conditions; Olga Putrova (Russia, gold) represents the epitome of the physique that every woman would like to achieve and Kittie Rosengren (Sweden, bronze) the youngest of the finalists - representing the immediate future of the category. While the first two steps of the podium were clear, the struggle in the Top 6 was opened and without quarter: Kittie Rosengren (Sweden, bronze), Oksana Davidova (Ukraine, 4th place), Szonja Petruska (Hungary, 5th place) and Nadine Müller (Germany, 6th place) gave a recital of elegance, proportion, genetics and form. Winner: OLGA PuTrOvA (russia). Since appearing on the scene in the 2013 World Cup in Kiev, she is already the No. 1 target of the fans. It was not an easy decision for the judges, to the point that both athletes totalled the same amount of points in their card: 10 points. You can not imagine more equality between two champions and only the statistical criteria awarded the victory to the very complete Alla Semenova. Behind, Olga Viazmetinova only achieved in putting some intrigue to the decision. Somewhat shorter and with less size - but her progress is evident in each event - the unmistakable platinum blonde from Kiev was always ahead of the other three athletes from Slovakia. Considering that this country achieved 5 gold medals at the past European, we can say that the Slavic countries have woken up and are now the rulers of the European scene in the most spectacular of their disciplines. TEXT: armando s. márquEz PHoTos: EasT LaBs. Determined to overcome his 8th place in the Mr. Olympia 2013, the Egyptian MaMdouh Elssbiay already has his place in Las Vegas this year. His victory in the New York Pro was indisputable. On the 17th of May, the Big Apple welcomed a new edition of the Professional New York Grand Prix, organized by Mr. Steve Weinberger - Head Judge at the past Arnold Classic Europe in Madrid, where more than 120 athletes took party; divided into 6 professional shows that made up this qualifying event for the 2014 Mr. Olympia. With less size, but with a very good symmetry, Juan Morel from New York did not make it easy for Big Rami and is posited as a “Top 10” for the next Mr. Olympia. bodybuildiNG “BIG RAMI” AND JUAN MOREL OFFER THE FIGHT OF THE YEAR It was worth pay admission just to see how Mamdouh Elssbiay succeeded prevail to favorite Juan Morel, before his audience, and managed to qualify for the 2014 Mr. Olympia. The Egyptian, who is still under the tutelage of Dennis James, is another alternative this year to enter the podium in Las Vegas, while the New Yorker points to a be clear finalist. Completing the the final were, fellow New Yorker Jonathan Delarosa (3rd place) he is signing an impressive season; the French Lionel Beyeké (4th place) who always reaches the finals; fellow New Yorker Max Charles (5th place) and the Hungarian colossus Daniel Toth (6th place), with sufficient advantage over the Greek Michael Kefalianos (7th place). The american aaroN Clark took the title in the 212 Division. 212 diVisioN BAITO ABBASPOUR BOTTOMS OUT It was disappointing to see an aspiring star like the Iranian Baito Abbaspour - used to fighting the “big boys” - enter the Division of 212 pounds, only to be third, clearly outperformed by New Yorker Guy Cisternino (2nd place) and especially by the American from Virginia, Aaron Clark (winner). The Iranian will have to adjust his preparation if he doesn’t want to see his prestige drop, being put into question lately, after the poor ranking at the Arnold in Brazil. Completing the final were Marco Rivera (USA, 4th place), Curtis Bryant (USA; 5th place) and Craig Richardson (USA, 6th place) in front of of European athletes like Lukas Osladil (Czech Rep., 8th place) and Thomas Benagli (Italy, 12 th place). The Iranian abbaspour (3rd place), seems to have missed the train to success in the Pro Circuit. yEshaira roblEs (LEFT) AND ashlEy kaltwassEr, REEDITED THE SHOWDOWN FOR THE TRIUMPH THEY HAD AT THE PAST ARNOLD CLASSIC 2014. FiGurEs CAMALA RODRIGUEZ ACHIEVES A NEW TITLE CaMala roGríGuEz celebrates her qualification for the 2014 Olympia and her 8th victory in the Pro Circuit. The French sidibE khoudlEdJi failed to qualify for the semifinals in her Pro debut. It was what the athlete from Colorado was looking for, when she left the Fitness mode to compete in Figures. It was far from easy for her, as she was facing 29 other athletes, ready to take the title. Still, Camala was overwhelmingly preferred by the judges compared to the Florida athletes Gennifer Strobo (2nd place) and Laurie Green (3rd place). Completing the final were Andrea Calhoun (USA, 4th place), Beckie Boddie (USA; 5th place) and Kelly Kaiser (USA, 6th place), in a show that only had one European: French debutant Sidibe Khoudledji who could not enter the semifinal. bikiNi YESHAIRA ROBLES BEATS KALTWASSER, IN FRONT OF HER AUDIENCE Here we saw another great “face to face” duel of the event. The best athlete of the season, Ashley Kaltwasser - unbeaten in 2014 - against the 2013 Olympia runnerup, re-editing the duel they had at the past Arnold Classic. In Columbus, Kaltwasser took the title, driven by a public that in New York, always sided with her rival from Bronx, which is why - and only by 1 point - Yeshaira Robles took the victory. The two protagonists of the season will face off, at least once more, at the next Olympia 2014. Of the remaining 28 athletes, it should just be said that the Europeans proved, once more, how difficult it is to compete in the USA. None reached the final and Vladimira Krasova (Czech Rep., 10th place) and Anna Starodubtseva (Russia, 12th place) reached the semi-final, while Jana Majerníková (Slovakia) fell out in the prejudging. BODY POWER PRO SHOW ZSUSZANNA TOLDI WINS AT HER PROFESSIONAL DEBUT, IN BIRMINGHAM Impressive debut by the Hungarian Zsuzsanna Toldi - winner of the 2013 Arnold Amateur Europe - in the Pro Circuit, in the Figure discipline. The beautiful athlete - former Bikini competitor - took the victory in the 2014 IFBB Bodypower Pro held in Birmingham (England), on May 17th, coinciding with the date of the popular IFBB New York Pro. It was not easy for Toldi to take such a victory against 12 other top athletes, like the American Amanda Doherty (2nd place); the crowd’s favorite Louise Rogers (England, 3rd place) or even the Finish Kati Alander (6th place) who always stands out at European shows. This victory directly classifies her for the Miss Olympia Figures 2014 in Las Vegas. For the Spaniards, the event had an interest in seeing the Andalusian María José García reaching the 7th place, very close to the Final, only 1 point behind Kati Alander and beating the popular Italian Giada Simari (8th place), who is seeking her place in the Pro Circuit. Also a special following for Raúl Carrasco from Seville and Vicente Santamaría from Rioja who reached, respectively, la 7th place and the 12th position in the Bodybuilding Show of 212 pounds. A total of 14 athletes took part in this event which was won by the Bahrani Sami Al Addad, closely followed by local favorite, Joseph Tavernier (2nd place) and the American Mark Dugdale (3rd place). Vicente Santamaría (12th place) represented us in Birmingham, where Raul Carrasco (7th place) was also present. In her first season as a professional , the Hungarian Zsuzsana Toldi has already classified for the Miss Olympia Figures. TEXT: armando s. márquEz PHoTos: EasT LaBs. IFBB PRO SUPER SHOW Juan MoRel (USA) is already a professional Champion. His triumph in Toronto qualifies him for the Olympia 2014 where he will have the opportunity to show his true potential. JUAN MOREL QUALIFIES FOR THE MR. OLYMPIA 2014 1 The New Yorker Juan Morel is becoming one of the revelations of professional bodybuilding in 2014. After his 2nd place at the Arnold Classic Brazil, the colossus of the “Bev Francis Powerhouse Gym” last May 31st won his first professional title and, thereby qualified for the Mr. Olympia 2014 in Las Vegas. Morel prevailed, with a perfect score, over 15 other rivals among which were athletes of highest level like Johnnie Jackson (2nd place), Jonathan Delarosa (3rd plac e) or Toney Freeman (4th place). Morel, even more in a hurry than in Rio de Janeiro five weeks ago, gave his opponents no choice; while the emerging Delarosa came back to live the same nightmare as in Brazil: after reaching the 2nd place in the prejudging, he fell to the third step of the podium in the end, overtaken by the veteran Jackson who remains in the elite, as does the “X-Man” Freeman who appears indestructible. The final was completed by the Frenchman Lionel Beyeké (5th place) who does not fail to explode, and the Canadian Henry Pierre Ano (6th place) who reached his first Final and surpassed Beyeké in the semifinals. The Toronto Pro Supershow has become the largest Canadian Fitness and Bodybuilding festival, by the hand of Mr. Ron Hache: an efficient organizer and IFBB official with a long career behind him. On this occasion, the 5 professionals shows gathered more than 120 athletes and handed out $20,000 in prizes. 3 JonaTHan DelaRosa (USA) is becoming the great revelation of 2014. His proportions and size led him to the 3rd position. 2 JoHnnie Jackson (USA) came close to adding another title to his impressive athletic resume. The “human crane” is the professional athlete still active with the most events behind him. At 48 years old, Toney “X Man” FReeMan (USA) still withstands in the first line of professional bodybuilding as demonstrated by his 4th place in Toronto. 5 4 lionel Beyeké (France) was not in his best form and he could only be classified 5th. Less fortunate was Vicente Santamaría from Rioja who, despite his obvious improvement from Birmingham, stayed a step away from the semifinal, together with the Swedish Oliver Adzievski and the Slovak Marian Cambal. For the athlete from New Jersey times are good on a sporting level: to his victory in Toronto we must add that of his wife Bethany Cisternino, in the Fitness Pro Show at ACB 2014. MaRk DuGDale (3rd) and Guy cisTeRnino (1st) fought for the title in the 212 Division. Between the two the Spanish Raúl caRRasco (2nd) slipped in. After a very long season as an amateur, the athlete from Montevideo has entered the Pro Circuit like lightning: 6th place at the ACB 2014 which marked her debut, she now won the title in her second professional competition and she made it a big one, defeating 15 other athletes. Aguiar remained in second position in the symmetry round, behind the Canadian Daniele Ruban but won her speciality: the choreography round where even experienced rivals couldn’t reach her, such as Ryall Graber (6th place), Trish Warren (3rd place), Kizzy Vaines (4th place), or even Ruban (2nd place). The Final was concluded by another Canadian: Vanda Hadarean (5th place) due to the second best routine of the show. With this victory, Marta Aguiar has already qualified for the 2014 Miss Olympia Fitness and is postulated as one of the invited athletes for the ACE 2014. The athlete from Madrid found herself with 27 other rivals in the show and could not enter the Top 15. Neither could the Italian Giada Simari and only the Hungarian Zsuzsanna Toldi - ACE Amateur winner 2013 - managed to do it, ranking in 11th place, a disappointing placement after her triumph, just days before, at the Grand Prix in Birmingham. The victory went to Genny Strobo, in a tight duel with Ann Titone (ranked 2nd). The two Americans will meet at the 2014 Figure Olympia, where Zsuzsanna Toldi will also be. Completing the Final were, Andrea Calhoun (USA, 3rd place), Cydney Guillon (USA, 4th place), Chaya Boone (USA; 5th place) and Roshanda Schmitt (USA, 6th place).
