UTA22 planning to fail.
Failing to fail and winning at my goal.

UTA22 was chosen in the wake of my DNF from the 100 last year.
I really lacked the ability to put the hours into training with my children at the age they
are now. But I wanted badly to go back into the belly of the beast that is the Blue
Mountains. I met with Melanie, my coach, and we went through the pros and cons of
different races and I was excited at the prospect of the 22km. It's a distance that surely
was manageable. I had completed a few half marathons and I knew I could put the
hours in needed for training. So once booked there was no going back.
Training went particularly well and I had no injuries in the lead up. My downfall is my
explosive starts and not yet managing to hold on for a full half and let's face it - UTA 22
was designed for a super-fast paced start, and yet again my epic fail. This was a
perfect mental and physical challenge for me.
The nerves never actually kicked in, I was just excited. I set 3 goal times for myself. A
fast one, a mid- range one and one that surely I could achieve. I missed the first two
but smashed the last one.
Several friends had registered for the same event. Some were Trotters and some
were not. This made for the perfect setting for me. Each person there with me would
experience the delight, beauty and pain that I would also endure.
The race was a really late start which I believe was a huge factor into the carnage of
the race. The morning was brisk and many dressed in longs. I took a chance and went
with shorts and singlet…Thank goodness. Whilst standing in the beating down sun I
was glad I had planned for a warm start.
UTA never fails to deliver a quality atmosphere, and everyone was ready to go when
the countdown sent us off onto the trails. I kept cool and held back as planned but

once the downhill started I let momentum do the work and my legs would just follow.
8km of straight downhill is a lot for my poor quads to endure. And yes they were
quivering when the first uphill came at the 8km mark. This wasn't too bad. I expected
this as I had run it in training. After the first hill it was straight back into the downhill with
a few uphills until the 13km mark. Lots of people were already dropping with cramps in
their legs.
I had already made the decision not to stop at the first check point. I had everything I
needed in my pack and I wasn't deviating from my plan except my head really needed
some watermelon. I had been salivating for some for the last km. As I passed I
grabbed some with a polite thank you in my passing. Until this point I was on time for
an excellent sub 3hr... Well at that pace if the downhill had continued I would have
made a finish in sub 1:40. But who am I kidding I knew I had a brutal uphill climb out of
the basin. I ate that beautiful delicious piece of watermelon and ditched the skin with
an official who was coming down the hill on my climb out.
As I grabbed some water out of my pack I didn't realise but it made all of my GUs fall
onto the trail. And as I continued on the climb that never ends a lady finally caught me
just as I went to pull one from my pack and was unable to locate it. Handing one to me
she said I think you dropped a few of these. A quick thank you and I ate it and went
into panic. Oh no, I have no nutrition and the hardest part is yet to come. I had salt
tablets left and without knowing I would need these (ALL of them) in a short km until
the finish.
The cramping - it started at 15km, there was a pull in my right quad. I reached for a salt
tablet to drop in my water... But the water wouldn't go down quick enough before both
quads started to cramp. I thought to myself I am not going to be taken out by a stupid
cramp and grabbed another salt tablet and ate it whole. My face was on fire but it did
the job. I can do this. Just push on...
This seemed to be a regular occurrence every km. So I decided to use those salt
tablets like sherbet. And put them in my mouth to suck on while I ran. Yes my legs
were cramping and they were on fire but I knew I had only a few kms to go and those
stairs would be in my sights.
Coming out past the sewerage works I saw about 30-40 people who were in front of
me taking the wrong path. I contemplated - Do I call out or let them go? I turned the
corner and called as I turned the right way. “Come back you're going the wrong way.”
At least I could sleep that night knowing they didn't get lost out there.

From there it was a fast paced flat single trail section with a couple of technical parts.
All I could think of was just hurry up and get there. Those stairs are waiting. It wasn't
long until I reached the stairs. 951 stairs!! The climb was brutal but spectacular. If
you've never climbed them it is a MUST do. I used the hand rails in every section I
could and tried to avoid using my legs. Then it happened. 200m from the finish both
legs seized and I fell into a tree. I was somewhere between screaming and wanting to
cry. The lack of hydration kicked in and I started to hyperventilate. I only had 200m to
go and my legs wouldn't let me.
Between the crowds I could hear the Trotters at the top of the stairs calling out. (When
someone passes at the base of the stairs they call your name at the finish line to let
others know you're coming). My mind set changed instantly and I thought “They are all
waiting for me”. My leg muscles relaxed for a moment and it was all I needed to get up
the rest of the stairs and push out a light sprint to the finish line.

Crossing the finish line - one step cramp two step double
cramp... Over the line seize.
I had nothing left. Completely depleted, dehydrated and
looking for the railing. My friend Amanda was there and
her dad came over to take my pack and I handed it to
him, he looked at me while I struggled with my legs and
said – “Do you know who I am?” I looked at him. Is this
guy from Trotters? Should I know him? I lifted his hat off
and sunglasses and came nose to nose and said “No!”
I'm super glad he was amused by my dehydration. He
called for the medics and they carried me to the aid station they made me squat to
release the muscles, gave me some Hydralyte and then made me stretch out.
A lie down and 20minutes later I apologised to Amanda's dad and regained composure
and waited for other Trotters and friends to finish.
Can I say it’s an amazing race and yes, I'm coming back next year.
A quicker time and a bit more hydration and nutrition will hopefully help….and of
course more training and conditioning.
A huge thank you to my amazing husband, for doing the mummy duties on a Friday so
I could fulfil my goals.
A massive thank you to Melanie McDonald for always being the amazing supportive
coach she is.

Great Ocean Road Marathon Victoria 44km

Almost a year ago, my ‘almost Terrigal Trotter’ friend Dan Ferris and I
were sitting in the Little Creatures brewery in Freemantle after a
chance meeting on the other side of the country. I was halfway through
a trip around Australia with my wife and 3 kids and he happened to be
there at the same time doing some photography work. So after a jog
and a meal, somehow the conversation turned to running and we
decided it’d be a good idea to do a marathon. And if you’re going to do
a marathon, why not make it a memorable one? Note to self –
decisions made after a few Little Creatures brews may one day prove
to be quite painful!
The weekend was an adventure to say
the least. We flew to Melbourne and
stayed with family who were gracious
enough to lend me their car and
camping gear. So on the Saturday we
drove from Melbourne, through
Torquay (where perfect 4 foot lefts at
Bell’s Beach taunted me) and along
the Great Ocean Road.
The race runs from Lorne to Apollo
Bay so we drove the course on our
way to our camp spot at Apollo Bay.
We soon started to worry that we’d
bitten off more than we could chew but
what a beautiful spot for a run. The
tent was fine, until the wind hit around
midnight. At least it didn’t rain! But I
had read somewhere that the sleep 2
nights before a run is more important than the night before, so I wasn’t
too worried about the side of the tent billowing over my face every few
minutes.

On race day the weather looked pretty good. It was a perfect running
temperature, the wind was a moderate cross wind, the scenery was
spectacular and I can honestly say I enjoyed the first 25 km. The road
follows the ocean almost the whole way with cliffs, beaches, streams
and friendly locals encouraging you in each small town you pass
through. But as I approached a bend at 27km and could see white caps
marching north out to sea, I knew things were about to get ugly. From
then on we had a constant 35km/h headwind and rain on and off (Dan
even got hailed on at one point). There’s no two ways about it, it was a
very tough, cold and miserable 17km home. But let’s not focus on
that…
I’m happy to say I ran the whole way except for a few aid stations
(although on any other day I wouldn’t call what I did between 30 and
40km ‘running’). Finishing any marathon I’m sure is a great feeling and
I can totally identify with that. After what the weather threw at us, I was
so happy and a little overwhelmed to cross that line. In summary, it’s a
truly remarkable race in one of Australia’s most beautiful locations.
Definitely recommended, if you like that sort of thing 

South West Rocks Running Festival

I had decided (alongside my training partner, Alyssa)
that this winter season I would step up the distance
and begin racing half marathons, rather than the
usual 10k races I do. As much as I enjoy racing hard
and fast, I wanted to challenge myself with racing
something longer.
I entered the SWR half, just two weeks before the
race - deciding it would be a great idea to have a
good solid hit out right before I go on holiday to Bali (where the temperatures and
traffic make training a tad difficult) and 3 weeks before my goal race of the season the,
Gold Coast half marathon.
I had felt fairly confident leading into the race - my training had been very consistent, I
was posting some great times in time trials and other races, I was feeling good when
racing - physically I felt fast, energetic and light, whilst mentally I felt confident,
motivated and determined. I had also made sure I had a good two weeks of tapering
from training and ate plenty of carbohydrates!
Admittedly, I was nervous before the race - I don't usually get nervous before races,
especially races where I haven't put any pressure on myself to get a podium finish or to
make a certain time. In this instance, I expected just a couple things of myself; to finish
and to run hard, but smart. I wasn't expecting myself to perform any kind of negative
split, but I did hope to refrain from my usual race tactic of going out hard. I think I was
nervous about the distance more than anything - about how I would feel both mentally
and physically as the kilometres went on (I know the distance isn't much compared to
what many trotters complete - but 21.1kms is a long way for me)!
Unlike my usual 10k race, I couldn't anticipate how I would feel towards the end of the
race nor how I would get through it. I woke up early, had two pieces of raisin toast and
a banana, drank plenty of water, and drove off to the start feeling race ready.
I got a great start, and felt great running through town - I was familiar with the course
as I've raced the triathlon there many times, I love the surroundings of South West
Rocks.

My pace felt perfect - I got to the 10k feeling quite good - I was also sitting in second
place and had a huge lead on third - which is always something to be happy about. I
checked my watch to see 42:49 - I was very happy my head was in the right space, my
legs felt great, I was coming second - I knew I could keep that pace and achieve a
solid performance.
Unfortunately, my stomach had other ideas. At
roughly the 14k mark my stomach began burning and
stitching up - something I'd never experienced before.
At first I thought it may have been dehydration - or
maybe even over exertion - but neither seemed likely.
I stopped at the next drink stop - walked, took a few
big gulps of water and Gatorade and kept pushing on.
Unfortunately the pain only got worse, and at the 17k
mark I ended up on the ground being sick.
Nevertheless, I was going to finish - even if it meant
walking those last few kms. I was passed by others,
who encouraged me to keep going - but at times the
pain became unbearable - I had no option but to put
my hands on my head and walk. I shuffled the last few
agonising kms away, stopping at every drink stop to
cross the line in 1:40:12 and in fifth place overall for
the women.
Even though I was thoroughly disappointed with my
performance, I was so happy that I completed the
race. I was proud that despite the pain I was feeling, I
still finished 21.1kms - I didn't give up! By completing
the event I definitely learnt a great deal; namely that
race day doesn't always go to plan and some things
really are out of ones control at times. My first half
marathon experience definitely hasn't deterred me
from the longer distances yet, I'm keen to go into the
Gold Coast half - just hoping that my stomach pains
don't make an unforgiving return! The SWR running
festival is a great event and it was really great having
many Trotters and my family cheering me on to the
finish - hopefully many more Trotters will go next year
and experience this wonderful location and event!

Walker’s
Corner
First Friday Walk For July 2016
It’s Whale Watching Time! So for our next walk we plan to head to the
coast at Norah Head.
Please meet at the park on the corner of Bush & Young Streets, at
9.30 on the 1st of July.
From there we will walk along the bike path in the direction of Soldiers
Beach, before returning to Norah Head & continuing to the light-house.
If anyone in the group is interested, the light-house is open for tours
from 10.00 – 1.30, & is well worth a visit with an entry fee of $6. If some
of the group wish to take the opportunity for a tour, the other walkers
can continue along the beach & keep an eye open for any migrating
whales!
From the light-house it is a short walk back via the bush trails to the
park where we can have lunch, before adjourning to the nearby café
(The Ark Café) for a cuppa.
This is an easy walk- no need for walking poles. There are toilets in the
park at the start of the walk, as well as along the way at Soldier’s
Beach, & near the light-house. The distance covered will be
approximately 5-6 kms. Please bring water & a snack/sandwich, &
wear appropriate walking shoes.
If you intend to join us for this walk, or you plan to bring along a

7.00 pm on the evening before the walk.

2016 Bay to Bay Running Festival
Once again, the Terrigal Trotters have
shown to the local and interstate running
community that we can provide a running
spectacle that other clubs aspire to create
and deliver. And that is despite the
weather. The preceding weeks went down
in history as being one of the most
catastrophic for the local community – the
carnage to Wamberal and Terrigal
rivalling those storms of 1974.
The 19th June started just after 3.00am for me. The skies were grey and cloudy with
the odd star above and a temp of about 15Deg C – slightly up on the 10 degrees from
last year but actually a good temperature for the runners.
The start area was under the total direction or our newest Race Director – Jeff Dick,
and a support crew volunteers coordinated by Jenny Barker – as Volunteer coordinator. Once again, she collated the names provided and gave them
responsibilities. About 150 Trotter volunteers assist us in putting on such great events.
Without the volunteers who do so much, our event couldn’t take place. The assistance
of the Police in our event is very much under-stated. Jeff made the comment to me
that Sgt Steve Russell made the starting of the event so smooth and seamless. Again,
Seaton Wilson, of the RMS assisted in the race by providing his car to lead our
wheelchair competitor, Brad Pemberton.
Once again, we finished the three main events on the field in front of the Western
stand of the Central Coast Stadium. The finish area crew (under the tutelage of Mark
Andrews, Graham Davis, Mike Gero and Mark Dunlop) dressed the Stadium and the
Festival area in the grassed section behind the western stand. But this Festival doesn’t
just happen in the finish area. We have about 12 Directors who have their own area to
look after. The guys on the trucks (Kevin Byrne, Daniel Pink and Lindsay Schultz, and
their crews) started loading on Friday at the Council depot and then were up at 3.00am
on Sunday morning to set out the course. Beverley Andrews once again did a very
fantastic job as Registrar, prize organiser, and T-shirt obtainer - a truck load of them
were delivered to the Stadium this year instead of my garage. Having Kath Casey,
Stadium Manager, on side makes our job so much easier than using the park beside

the Sailing Club. Her positive, affirmative attitude to our event makes my job so much
easier.
This year we had two announcers extraordinaire – the Ridler himself, Mr Graham
Ridley, and Michael Walton of Travelling Fit fame – our sponsor of the 3km Kids Run.
From about 7.00am until 11.00am they kept us informed of our competitors as they
came across the line and spruiked the values of our minor sponsors who decorated our
recovery area.
Thanks also to Dave Lambert at the Surf Club Café for providing 1700 bottles of water,
and to the Gosford Police LAC, the RMS, and the SES – they can’t do enough for us.
Without their assistance, the race doesn’t happen. And what about Mars Foods?? Not
only do they supply us with about 60 runners, but they are also a major cash sponsor,
and they hand out over 2000 goodies bags to anyone who wants them.
Even with such poor weather during the week, we had 2312 registered competitors
(with a few more on the day in the Kids Run) with over 500 in the NBN Half – up by
20% on last year. As usual, we compete for our competitors with other Sydney and
interstate based events, but still exceeded expectations.
Although the main aim of the Bay to Bay Running Festival is always to produce events
that are safe, achievable and scenic, and we do so much more. We exceed that in
leaps and bounds. We show that we are a tight-knit group of like-minded people that is
far stronger that the sum of the individuals. The dissimilarity and diversity of our
members is the twine that binds us together.
We also aim to support others in need. From the proceeds of the 2016 Festival, we
hope to be able to donate somewhere between $35,000.00 and $45,000.00 - the main
recipients being the Central Coast Kids in Need, and again Blair’s Wish.
Stand proud Totters, you have put on a great event and provided for those less
fortunate.

Cape to Cape (By Greg Brown #505)

Once upon a time I had an idea of doing a big long run so I did.
The run started at Cockle Creek on the South East
Cape of Tasmania on the 2nd of April 2016. It was
raining and cold for most of the first day, the next day
was only cold, the third day was very windy and the
6th day was freezing. That was the only bad weather I
had on the whole trip. Yes I did have some rain at
night and some light rain in the tropics when it is 30
deg. But that didn’t bother me at all. It was hot
though. When I hit Bundaberg they had a heat wave
so the day time temperature never got below 30
degrees for the rest of the run.
Misfortunes on the trip were limited. The caravan I
have is 20 years old and a few things went wrong
with that. Lost the spare wheel the first day when
the rusty bracket broke off without us knowing. The
hot water heater broke. We went through 3 sets of
wheel bearings. A wheel broke off. The wiring went
pfft. But that’s all.
Me I had one blister in the last week and lost one
toe nail. I had a quad muscle complain for 2 days
so I had to walk and ice it every hour till it recovered
letting me only do a 48km day. But that’s all.
The best part of the trip was twofold. The people I met on the way they were so
welcoming with many opening their doors giving me and my crew a place to sleep and
something to eat but most of all they opened their wallets and donated to the cause.

Most of these people were people I had never met before which was amazing. The
other part was the sunrises. Most where spectacular and as long as they were on my
right side I was happy. If they were on my left I was going the wrong way.
Strangely the scenery didn’t change must except for some spectacular water views
over lakes and beaches. There was mainly farmland, grazing in the south, sugar cane
in the North and wild bushland in the Far North.
My preferred shoes were Hoka Stinson’s
and I went through 5 pair of them with one
pair being half a size bigger for late in the
afternoon on big days. My socks were
Steigen’s and the combination of the two
contributed to me being injury free.
The distance I travelled was about
5300km a bit shorter than expected. I
found that you can’t trust Google Earth.
Did I lose weight? Yes, about 2kg in total.
Did I take a day of? Yes, the day I was on the ferry across Bass Straight and no I didn’t
run around the deck or run on a treadmill I just sat watched TV and drank a few beers.
The total time was 81day 4 hours and 40 minutes.
Will I do another run like this?
I don’t think so it was just too long.

Trotters Trail Runs And Walks
2016
For all trail runs/walks, participants are totally responsible for their own
welfare. This means carrying sufficient fluids, food and safety gear,
including maps and directions where available. It is strongly
recommended that participants carry the same gear as required for the
GNW100s.
For trail runs/walks involving bus travel, money must be paid two weeks
before run. If insufficient members have paid by that date, the event will
be cancelled.

Be Safe, Be Seen
We’ve all seen them (usually at the last
minute), cyclists and runners dressed
head to foot in black, no lights nor reflectors.
We drive passed them and think
how daft they are, we know that they are
risking their own safety and how it is
only a matter of time before something
happens.
It is for this reason
that Terrigal
Trotters are doing
this safety push
now. While
the mornings are dark we request that you carry a
torch, use reflectors and
wear light coloured or fluorescent clothing - it is
for your own wellbeing.
Thanks to all who have embraced this safety
message, I have been approached by non-Trotters
recently telling me they have noticed that runners
are now more visible – it is good the message is
getting through.
PLEASE keep wearing visible clothes, keep using headlamps and proudly
wear your reflective belt kindly donated to each Trotter by the Coast
Runners Shop in Killarney Vale.
