RECREATION DISTRICT
Message to the community
Pursue the Active Life. Your BCRD, its supporters, volunteers and the
community conclude another year of healthy, active recreation in the
Wood River Valley area. As we look in the rearview mirror, and take
an ambitious look ahead, we are so grateful for the rich and active
recreation experience our community has to offer and the continued
support and engagement of all of you!
Jim Keating
Executive Director
Tim Hamilton
President of the
Board of Directors
We are so honored to report on the key milestones of our organization
in the last year detailed in the following pages. The community
continued to see increased need for affordable and accessible
activity and the BCRD worked hard to deliver that through a rich
offering of active recreation that ranged from engaging after school
care and camps, to encouraging health and wellness at FitWorks, to
compelling events and community gatherings, to enhanced trail work,
and active outdoor experiences at Galena Lodge, to one of the most
extensive winter and summer trail networks anywhere! Our hallmark this
last year has been to continue to improve community satisfaction in the
services and facilities we offer while ensuring that all of these amazing
amenities will endure and thrive in the years to come!
What do we value most about the BCRD going forward? We recognize
that the BCRD has an unparalleled opportunity and responsibility to
connect our whole valley through our core mission. The Wood River
Trail embodies that amazing mission in physical form as it makes it way
from the base of Bellevue to north of Ketchum. We are committed to
sustaining the long-term health of this organization, with your support,
so that we can ensure an active community that connects us through
all of our projects and services and celebrates some of our key,
shared values!
In the last year, the BCRD saw more than 50,000 skier days, over 30,000
visits to the BCRD @ The Community Campus, over 20,000 visits to the
BCRD SportScape, over 1000 enrollments in children’s sports & leagues,
and countless visits to the Wood River Trail. This is only possible through
the amazing work of staff, volunteers, board members, partners, and all
of you! Thank you for your continued support as we strive to engage the
community and encourage total community health with a simple rally
cry: Pursue the Active Life.
Your BCRD
There are many causes to give to but only
one connects our entire community through
recreation, bringing it together in so many ways.
Why Support the BCRD?
Because…
• Skiing across Murphy Bridge on a blue sky day is priceless.
• You will always remember the expression on your son’s face when he hit his first baseball.
• People who recreate are happier, healthier , more fit and live longer.
• A hot cocoa at Galena Lodge on a snowy day hits the spot.

today.
• Only 40% of our annual budget is covered by tax support.
We must raise the rest each year.
Your gift will help us to ensure that no child is denied a chance to play because of an inability
to pay, that our unique, diverse programs and facilities continue to keep residents and
visitors healthy and active. IT’S WHY WE LIVE HERE, AND IT’S RIGHT OUTSIDE YOUR FRONT DOOR.
Our Vision:
Blaine County will feel like home; a good place for all kinds of people to live where
recreation is the cornerstone of healthy, active and productive lives.
Our Core Values:
Health • Quality • Inclusiveness • Community
Our Pledge:
To honor BCRD’s strong tradition of improving the quality of recreation while working
to meet the needs of our growing community.

A special thank you to the
Deer Creek Fund for their generous gift
of $20,000 in support of the BCRD’s FitLife
Gym Project. Their contribution helped to
update and improve the BCRD gym with
new equipment for the whole
community! Thank You!
BCRD FitWorks:
Offering strength, cardio, a full gymnasium
and fitness studios, the BCRD motivates and
supports healthier lifestyles with FitWorks, part
of our complete recreation center at the
Community Campus. Serving Blaine County
with affordable, accessible fitness options
year round, from students to seniors and
everyone in between. FitWorks is not only a
resource for those who wish to stay fit but
it actively engages those who are new to
fitness and who wish to begin living a
healthy lifestyle.
FitWorks offers customers friendly knowledge
and encouraging staff who can help new
members feel comfortable in all areas of
fitness. From cardio machines including spin
bikes to accent training and a great variety
of classes such as yoga, pilates, zumba and
nutrition. There is something for everyone at
FitWorks. Get healthy, lose weight and feel
good. FitWorks, lifestyle fitness for the whole
community.
FitWorks Sports & Leagues HUB
Sports & Leagues:
Under the Leadership of our Sports and
Leagues coordinator and now certified youth
sports administrator, Brad Musbach, Sports
and Leagues saw over 1,000 participants in
2011. This year also marked many exciting
additions for Sports and Leagues from new
online registration for convenience and
efficiency, to new sports equipment, like
pitching machines, to instituting national
standards for all youth sports. In addition,
we piloted a youth LaCrosse clinic,
improved the condition of Carey Sports
Programs and successfully coordinated the
Adult Basketball League complete with ten
teams. We could not have engaged so
many youth without the help of our 130
volunteers! Thank you!
BCRD HUB Youth Center:
Home to our KID Zone After School program,
our summer day camp and winter break
program, the HUB plays a central role at the
BCRD@ the Community Campus for kids and
families. Serving over 200 kids in the summer
and up to100 kids each day during the school
year, youth in our programs have opportunities to engage in indoor and outdoor recreation year round. The summer of 2011 introduced kids to a new and improved archery
area and kids Zumba. An awesome water
play day
in the HUB
Backyard
complete with
a dunk tank,
made a hot
summer day a
bit cooler! This
year’s fantastic theater workshop organized
by Britta and Laurel Gaeddert, had 20 performers presenting a production of Alladin.
Kids made sets and costumes, enjoyed a cast
breakfast and celebrated their success with
a cast party and awards. With the generous
support of the Campfire Foundation, children
who could not otherwise attend summer
camp were able to do so with camp scholarships. Just one more way the BCRD is living its
mission to bring diverse recreation to kids in
Blaine County.

Wood River Trail Highlights
BCRD COMMUNITY SKIING /CYCLING EVENTS
Ski the Rails event held each winter on the Wood
River Trail as part of the Sun Valley Nordic Festival.
Celebrating its 22nd year, this fantastic Nordic
Community event has become an annual ritual
for residents and visitors alike. Winter and summer, the Wood River Trail connects our community
through biking, skiing walking or running, one mile
at a time. The Annual 4th of July Criterium held in
the heart of downtown Hailey continued to excite
both riders and spectators in 2011. Over 150 riders
from around the region, in every age group from
four to seventy four, rode around the four corner
downtown course. The Criterium was a great way
to celebrate the 4th of July, recreation and fun.
This year, the 6th Annual Ride the Rails, included
a special squad of weed eating goats! Thanks
to a great partnership with PAN BC (Pesticide
Action Network Blaine County) and with a
generous gift from local residents Brian Ross
and Susan Reinstein, the BCRD invited approximately
700 goats to take part in a pilot project to manage
noxious weeds on the Wood River Trail. Using goats
through targeted grazing as an alternative
to pesticides is an example of our commitment
to our communities health. We are excited
about this pilot project and its
potential to be
successful.
Brian Ross and Susan Reinstein
~ through their generosity the
Wood River Valley is healthier
and more active! Thank you!
Miles of Smiles Ski the Rails Ride the Rails
BCRD Miles of Smiles Program:
With the belief that every child deserves a bike,
the Miles of Smiles Program gave away 38 new
bikes and helmets to kids who would otherwise
go without. The continued generosity of
community champions, Brian Ross and Susan
Reinstein, Specialized Bikes, the Elephant’s
Perch and assembly volunteers Eric Grootveld,
Mike Long, Eric Thurmond and Will Long allowed
this wonderful program to give kids the freedom
and flexibility to go places, participate in summer
activities, get a job or just enjoy a ride on the
Wood River Trail.
EVERY KID DESERVES THAT.
The BCRD
Touching lives, bringing people together
across the community, one mile at a time.
People who recreate are happier, healthier, more fit and
live longer – let’s celebrate recreation in Blaine County, it’s
why we live here and it’s right outside your front door.

Aquatic Center:
The Aquatic Center continued to bring great outdoor
swimming fun to kids and adults alike this season with
an important emphasis on safety. Aquatics Director
and swim coach Cameron King announced another
successful year for the Dolphins Swim Team who
took second overall at the Sagebrush League
Championships. At the pool, kids learned to swim,
tested their balance on the log roller, enjoyed the
climbing wall and the poolside basketball hoop
while spending time with their families poolside. Folks
visited the snack shack, and enjoyed celebrating
birthdays and anniversaries at the outdoor oasis.
With the ongoing support of Atkinson’s Market Swim
School Scholarship Fund, kids who would otherwise
not be able to learn to swim, had a chance to take
swim lessons this summer. Sun Valley Adaptive Sports
(SVAS) campers visited the Aquatic Center and were
able to enjoy the pool with the use of our Aquatic
Hydraulic Lift which assisted campers in getting in
and out of the pool safely and comfortably.
This critical piece of equipment was a gift from
the Donald W. and Gretchen K. Fraser Fund
through the Idaho Community
Foundation.
“Thank you all for your help with our
campers. It was so great to be able to
use the lift! It was truly awesome!”

Volleyball
Pump Track
and Sand Volleyball:
It couldn’t be a SportScape without
our Pump Track and Sand Volleyball
to complete the outdoor recreation
experience! The Pump Track continued
to be a great healthy and active
recreational option for kids and adults
of all ages in 2011. Parents and kids
spent time together moving from the
cool and refreshing pool to the fast
energy of the pump track all summer
long. 2011 also saw an increase in
users of the sand volleyball courts,
another cost free recreational activity
at the BCRD. In addition, physical
education students at Wood River
High School took advantage of the
courts this fall. Just another way the
BCRD works to enhance
partnerships in our community.
My seven year old really learned how to
handle his bike on the Pump Track this
summer. Thanks so much for the beginner
section, his confidence soared! ~ Parent

Galena and the Trails
Galena and the Trails Crucial
Fundraising & Community
events:
The 15th Annual Galena and the Trails Winter
Benefit raised over $180,000 with hundreds of
enthusiastic guests bidding and cheering the night
away. In another challenging year for non profits,
dedicated Nordic enthusiasts came together to
raise funds to ensure the future of Galena Lodge
and our incredible trail system. Nordic Ambassador
Muffy Ritz was honored at the event for her contributions to Nordic Skiing in our community and her
tireless work to teach so many women how to
Nordic ski, thanks to her VAMPS Program.
The 2011 Harriman Tea celebrated our 11th year
of bringing women together for Tea in support of
the Harriman Trail. Our most successful fundraising
effort yet, raising over $33,000, including a matching gift from the Works of Grace Foundation, the
Tea was generously and beautifully hosted by
Theresa Castellano-Wood. Held at her lovely Gimlet
home, women from all over the country came
together for Tea to support the Harriman Trail.
Additional donations made by Lauren Street of
Boulder Mountain Clayworks and Liz Roquet of
Lizzy’s Fresh Coffee, made for a unique silent
auction experience. The 2011 Sawtooth Century
was once again a great event for cycling
enthusiasts. Over 150 riders enjoyed a blue sky day
of camaraderie, great food and a great way to
stay fit. Proceeds of over $4,000 from the event
benefited the Galena Summer Trails Plan. The
2nd Annual Sun Valley Nordic Festival celebrated
all things Nordic with music, Nordic races and even
a snowshoe dance contest! Another example of
how great partnerships can create fantastic
experiences for the whole community.

Sustainable Capital Investments:
In our effort to address the long term sustainability
of Galena and the Trails while ensuring the quality
of the Nordic experience for our users,
we addressed some key projects in 2011.
• With a generous gift from the Kemmerer Family
Foundation and Ward Gray, we were able to
purchase a much needed Yamaha 450VK
Professional Snow machine. Used for early season grooming and winter “touch ups,” aquiring this
critical machine helps us in grooming efficiency
and effectiveness.
• A new deck and custom doors and hardware at Galena Lodge really made our mountain
treasure shine in 2011. Thanks so much to the Follo Don Shepler, pictured with wife and fellow
Family, Jim McClatchy, Lance Crawford and Sun

Dear Friends and Supporters,
The achievements highlighted in our 2011
Annual Report to the Community exemplify
a BCRD attribute that helps us increase
our impact; the partnerships we cultivate.
Seeking recreation solutions with other
community members and organizations
enables us to maximize the contributions
we receive from YOU. It makes us more
effective and efficient and ultimately more
sustainable. It connects us to so many in so
many ways.
In the following pages we gratefully
acknowledge our loyal donors and our
new donors who have stood by us through
uncertain economic times in 2011. Your
involvement demonstrates your trust and
confidence in our ability to continue to
provide Blaine County with diverse, healthy
and active recreation for everyone, and
allows us to combine efforts and resources
with key like minded partners in the
community!
There is so much to be accomplished in
the years ahead and we need your
continued involvement to realize Blaine
County’s dreams for recreation and to
meet the challenges before us. We are
excited to have you with us on this journey.
Yours sincerely,
