Members List: This month, BPHA is honoring all of those who do their part to fund all of
the work that we do on our neighborhoods behalf. The support of each member has
helped to maintain the Sentinel publication, mosquito fogging, deed restriction
maintenance, esplanade maintenance, website, and most importantly our five Constable
Deputies. Just like any other expenses in life, it all adds up when we are budgeting to care
for the 2200 lots in our neighborhood. In this edition of the Sentinel, we have listed our
2014-15 Dues paying members who paid by November 19.
Constable’s Neighborhood Outreach: Save the Date for Saturday, February 28, 2015 at
10 am for a Bike Rodeo where Constable Deputy Mathews-Segura will have an obstacle

Beautification: Austin Landscaping has provided a double service in moving the
thriving knockout rose bushes from our narrow Buffalo Speedway esplanades and using
them to beautify our very own Pershing Middle School. Our residents will now enjoy a
properly sized iris which should not limit their view when making left turns across Buffalo
Speedway. Thank you to Jack Stopnicki for tirelessly caring for our esplanades and Poor
Farm Ditch. The man trimming the oak trees on the Stella Link esplanades was none
other than Jack! He has taken it upon himself to do light trimming on years between when
BPHA pays a tree service to cut back branches. Very neighborly, indeed!
Board Members: THANK YOU to our outgoing BPHA Board members! We have such
a wealth of accomplished and thoughtful residents in BPHA. It is wonderful to have
neighbors share their time and abilities maintaining our neighborhood. Term limits are a
great reason to get new talent on the board, and it is time to thank some of the members
who are now rotating out of service due to term limits or conflicting commitments. Many
thanks to Bill Blackwood, VP Central; Nicole Shah, VP West; Jeff McNear, Area 4
Director; Lundin Schneider, Area 6 Director; Grant Harpold, Area 10 Director.
Deed Restrictions: It appears that another section of the former Shell property is under
review for developing a 100 unit dwelling. We have requested more details from
Southside Place about a variance posted on the property and have worked with our real
estate attorney to know how BPHA residents can best be protected according to our deed
restrictions. We are working to prevent the developer from allowing a property exit onto
Gramercy Street. It would be in the best interest of their residents to not have an access to
their property from our streets as well as our interior single-family home street not being
burdened by the traffic of a multi-family dwelling of that size.

We are quickly approaching the Christmas and New Year seasons
which are the busiest times of the year for Vacation Watches. If
you will be leaving town, please complete the form and get it to
the deputies. If you are not a member of the Constable Patrol,
contact HPD for a similar service. While you are away, make every attempt to have your home appear as if you were home-have it
lighted as usual, have mail and newspapers collected daily, etc.
To request a Vacation Watch:
1. Complete a Vacation Watch form which is included in
your membership packet.
2. Mail or fax completed form according to the directions
on the form.
3. Information or additional forms can be obtained by
calling the BPHA Office at 713-666-7248.

HOLIDAY CAUTIONS

FIRST SERVICE DAY
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6!

It is time for our first Service Day for Karl
Young Park! The date has been scheduled
for Saturday, December 6. Tasks will
include spraying for ants, winterizing,
trimming, cleaning, etc. Boy Scout Troop
11 has volunteered to support the work and
bring coolers, water, coffee, and hot
chocolate. We will start at 8 am and work
until Noon. Just bring yourself, any tools
you may find helpful, and a willingness to
help! Any questions or comments, please
send a note to [email protected].
Please exercise caution when you are out and about doing your holiday shopping. Be aware of your surroundings as you walk from the
store to your vehicle. Avoid the distraction of using your cell
phone. Get in the habit of checking your rear view mirror as you
near your destination. If you suspect a vehicle may be following
you or you see suspicious appearing people near your home, do not
drive to your home. Instead, drive to the nearest police facility or to
an area that is well lit and where there are many people. If you are
doing your shopping online and are expecting the arrival of packages, please do all you can to make sure these do not sit at your door
for a great length of time. If you will not be home when these are
expected, make arrangements for a friend to retrieve them.
Be careful where you place your Christmas tree. Do not pile your
gifts where they can be seen from outside of your home. Not too
long ago, a family here awoke on Christmas morning to find that
someone had entered their home while they slept and had stolen the
tree and gifts – here in Braeswood Place!

WINTER HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS

Remember: Crooks love the holidays as much as everyone else, especially because it is an opportune time for
crime. Here are some tips on how to celebrate safely this holiday season.

PRECINCT ONE WINTER COLLECTION DRIVE

this winter. Deputies will be collecting outerwear and reaching out to the less fortunate this winter. The Constable’s Office will be collecting new or gently used hats, scarves, gloves, sweaters, new socks, and hygiene items
for those who need them. Donations can be dropped off to Deputy Mathews-Segura at 1302 Preston Street, 4th

WOW! This year has flown by! I have had so much fun leading the group, and I am proud to say that we have
substantially increased our membership! We are now at 275 members! I am happy to announce the new President for 2015, Kristin Hamilton and new Vice President, Kristin Horn. They are going to do a fantastic job!

LONGFELLOW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Longfellow Elementary hosted Leadership Day on November 13 and over 100 people came to see this dynamic
program in action. Visitors attended a student led leadership pep rally in the gym and were able to tour different
grade levels where students showed them around their classrooms and talked to them about their work. Students
in Orchestra, Band, Music, Dance and Art have also been busy performing around the city and getting ready for
their upcoming magnet performances at the school. All students take part in the magnet program and rotate
between the different areas in kindergarten and first grade. Starting in second grade students pick an area to
concentrate on and become proficient in. One second grade mom of a band student said "It is wonderful to see
my child actually being able to play songs I recognize and receive such wonderful instruction".
New this year to Longfellow, students have been able to apply for leadership jobs around the school. These jobs
range from cheerleaders, peer academic tutors, special friend leaders, ambassadors, party planners, fundraisers,
global projects leaders, MC Leaders, radio announcers, community outreach leaders and more! These leadership
jobs give the students experience that will help them in the real world and also give them a chance to let their
individual gifts shine. Second grade student and Special Friend Leader Ella Evans said "I want to be a Special
Friend Leader because I am good at helping people solve their problems. I'll be patient, I'll listen, and then I'll
talk". Third grade MC Leader Blessing Bediako says she is excited about her job because it "will help me with
my stage fright". Fourth grade Community Service Leader Cory Bell is interested in improving our city and
thinks respect and integrity are two important characteristics to have. He says he shows "respect by looking
people in the eye and integrity by telling the truth to everyone no matter what." We are proud of all our leaders!
PERSHING MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS

Thanks to everyone for coming out recently to our annual Spaghetti Supper and Fine Arts Showcase. It was a
very successful event, raised money that the PTO can use to put back into some school programs, and
showcased our wonderful Pershing talent. Just a reminder - Winter break will be December 22 to January 2.
And if you are considering registration for your child into a school other than the school to which you are
zoned, you must complete a Magnet application and that must be turned into HISD by December 19. Get more
information from the Pershing or HISD website. We hope everyone has a wonderful holiday break and we will
catch up with you in the New Year!

MARK TWAIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Being an International Baccalaureate (IB) school, Mark Twain students strive to be inquirers, knowledgeable,
thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective. In November,
the community truly excelled at being caring, balanced, inquirers and knowledgeable. At the beginning of
November, Kevin Noland and the Dad’s Club demonstrated the importance of having a balanced learner by
wrangling 150 tents full of excited children with the Dad’s Camp Out. Twain students were also able to show
their commitment to service with the help of Amy Allen and the 4th grade students organizing the Fall Food
Drive benefiting Kids’ Meal Houston. Finally, Holly Lee and Jennifer Fernandez coordinated a very
successful “Paws for Reading” Book Fair helping students be inquirers and knowledgeable by adding new
books to their collection. The annual Storybook Parade, wherein students and teachers dressed-up as their
favorite author or character, highlighted our thinkers and risk-takers. Finally, if you are interested in the TwoWay Bilingual Immersion Program (TWBIP), also known as the Dual Language Program, applications are
available in the Mark Twain office and are due by Friday, December 19.

GOOD NEIGHBORS PET RESCUE

A few weeks ago, I was notified of a dog trapped and injured in the Poor Farm Ditch. Several sightings had
occurred and our own Constable Ameson contacted our Office Manager about the dog and how to rescue her.
He realized the concrete was too high for the dog to get out and she was limping on one leg. I sent out an email
to our Braeswood Place Rescue Group about this and heard from one neighbor that he sees the dog frequently
"between the foot bridge at Sewanee and the bridge at Bellefontaine, mainly at the curve that backs up to St.
Vincent's. She's definitely limping on her back left leg." Expecting rain, I braced for the worst. Well, I am
proud to say that I have never been more proud of the animal lovers in Braeswood Place. Several neighbors
went out in the rain and in the ditch all day and finally trapped this scared dog. She was taken to my good
friends at Richmond Avenue Animal Hospital. I named her Rainey, given the circumstances of her rescue. A
“Rainey Day” fund has been set up at Richmond Animal Hospital under my name for those who want to
contribute to her medical expenses. Words cannot express just how proud I am of the neighbors going out of
their way to help this injured dog. It turns out she is a one year old mixed breed and is very shy but not at all
aggressive. We have no idea where she came from but she is extremely grateful to the neighbors who captured
her and saved her life. She is a very lucky girl to have so many Angels watching over her. Thank you all for
showing what caring neighbors can do to help a wonderful dog who was in dire straits. You all are an example
of what all neighborhoods should be like!

BRAESWOOD PLACE GARDEN CLUB

On Monday December 15, the BPHA Garden Club will have its monthly meeting. We will gather at Pronto
Cucino, 3191 West Holcombe Boulevard at 6:30 pm. All are welcome to join us for an evening of food and

GARDEN OF THE MONTH

Yard of the month for December is located at 3505 Tartan Lane, the home of Chris Keahey and Janna Smith.
One of the more modern homes in Braeswood Place, the homeowner has designed his gardens (both front and
back) to reflect modern clean lines as well. Large palms flank each side of the house and a loropetalum hedge
balances both sides. Low walls in the front and side yard serve to anchor plants including agapanthus, jasmine,
foxtail fern, and succulent ground cover with mondo grass borders. Seasonal color which is changed twice a
year now includes pansies, cyclamen, snapdragon, and alyssum; white and red for the holiday season. A very
striking feature of the home is viewed at night with the lighting. Directed at the palms and other features are
special lights which provide an appealing healthy green cast to the lawn. Large stone boulders on either side
of the house enhance the colors of stone on this attractive home.

How to Buy Happiness
I often talk to clients about how they should invest their money. How they should spend it
is another matter, but one that is just as important. “Happy Money” by Elizabeth Dunn and
Michael Norton offers direction on how to spend in ways that will increase your enjoyment
of life. Here are the authors’ “core principles,” fleshed out with a few thoughts of my own.





Buy experiences rather than things: Our culture places great value on possessions. But
many of the wealthiest people I know realize that the value of money is not in what it lets you
accumulate, but in what it lets you do. Research shows that purchasing an experience often
creates more pleasure, dollar for dollar, than a product.
Make it a treat: Spending on the same things over and over again lessens enjoyment. We
become conditioned to new jewelry every Valentine’s Day or a new car every two years.
Limiting such purchases can make us more appreciative – and the purchases more special.
Buy time: One thing missing in many people’s lives is free time to do the things they love. Be willing to pay for services
that free up your time.
Pay now, consume later: Think of this as the opposite of buying on credit. Paying for something like season tickets to
the opera ahead of time lets you anticipate the pleasure it’s going to bring.
Spend on others: Research indicates it’s not only better to give than to receive, but it makes us feel better as well.
