Tandem Rigging
We like tandem rigging when short
strikes become an issue. As baits get
increasingly longer, the second hook
becomes increasingly important. We particularly recommend tandem
rigging our longer baits, such as our 14” and 18” models.

This deadly Hogy® modification was sent to us by a resourceful angler in the Northeast who was targeting spring stripers, which feed heavily on
squid. Not satisfied with the other squid imitators on the market, the angler decided that the large profile of the 10 and 14 inch Hogy® Original was
nearly identical to the large local squid the striped bass went bonkers for. With a few quick modifications and some yankee ingenuity, the Hogy®
Squidbert was born, and soon became the secret weapon of top anglers in the region. For now, you’ll have to make your own, but we hope to have
production models available soon.
STEP 1: Using the tool that comes with the eyerattles, punch a hole through the Hogy about 2/3
of the way to the tail. The baits don’t have to be
pre-rigged, but it does help to aid in the proper
placement of the eye-rattle.
STEP 3: Now insert the eye rattle into the hole.
It helps to wet the rattle before doing this; it will
make it slide through a bit easier. Once it’s in
place we recommend adding a drop of glue to
both sides of the rattle.
STEP 2: Take a black Magic Markerand insert the
tip into the hole created by the punch tool. Do
this on both sides. Over time, this ink will seep
into the plastic and spread out quite a bit.
STEP 4: Take a dark colored marker and trace
around the perimeter of the rattle. This will
enhance the illusion of a squid eyeball. It helps
to press a paper towel on it afterward to absorb
the excess ink.

STEP 5: Set the Hogy with its flat side (the top)
facing the cutting table. Use the X-Acto knife
to cut the bait lengthwise, starting close to the
eyeball. This is the first step to making tentacles.
STEP 6: Now rotate the Hogy 90-degrees, and
proceed to cut each “leg” into thirds. Leave the
middle section longer to simulate the graspers
on squid, which are longer than their arms. This
will leave you with 6 lifelike tentacles.

Due to their extremely soft plastic, Hogy® Soft-Baits have a natural place behind trolling

Soft Bait Retrieve:
Point the rod tip toward the water and twitch your
soft-bait as you reel, using short jerking motions to add action to the lure. Give
it a pause every so often to simulate a severely wounded baitfish. You will often
find that you’ll get hits when you start reeling again.
Change retrieve speeds and twitching frequencies until you dial in exactly
what the fish want!

When worked properly, Hogy soft baits have a seductive “walk-the-dog” action.
Blind Casting: If you know fish are holding in an area, don’t be afraid to blind
cast. Due to Hogy’s large sizes and super lifelike action, big game fish will swim
great distances to strike! Don’t be afraid to fish these baits FAST! Splashing and
popping will call them in!
Sight Casting:
You want to “lead” the fish. In doing so, bring your favorite
Hogy® soft-bait into the fish’s field of view thereby simulating the effect of the
“predator” and the “bait” having a “chance” encounter.
If you’re casting to breaking fish, approach slowly to avoid spooking the school.
Try to determine the direction the school is swimming and get ahead of the school.
“Lead” the fish with your cast. Oftentimes, larger fish will be holding underneath. Try
sending a Hogy Jiggn’ bait under the
school in search of larger fish.

all levels of the water column. Deep
jigging is an excellent way to target
fish holding in deep water. Vary your
retrieve and presentation.

Get down with a little trolling weight, lead core or wire
line. Try going weedless in heavy structure or in a weedy
area. They also work great when trolled on one of our
jigheads, or tip your favorite bucktail jig with a Hogy and

Just a few Hogy Reccomendations…
®
LARGEMOUTH BASS: The 7” and 10” Texas-rigged Hogy® Originals have been proven to be
deadly on largemouth bass. Don’t be afraid to “fish big” for these aggressive fish.
SMALLMOUTH BASS: Although a little bigger than most baits for smallies our 6” Skinny and
7” Original Series are extremely popular with smallmouth bass anglers who target trophies.
Amber is our biggest seller.
PIKE & MUSKY: The 10” and the 14” are the proven sizes for these toothy critters. We recommend
braided cable rigs when fishing for muskies. In weedy situations, try a Texas-rigged 10” Hogy® and the
tandem rigged 14” Hogy® in open water to draw more attention. Hogy® Insert Rattles drive them crazy!
STRIPED BASS: Hogys were originally designed and field-tested while fishing for striped bass. We
routinely cast, drift and troll Hogys for stripers and just about every Hogy® product has produced
large striped bass.
BONITO & FALSE ALBACORE: The 6” Skinny and 7” Hogy® Original are deadly on false albacore and
bonito – in fact it is the best albie lure we have ever used! Fish it hard and fast with the tip of the rod pointed
at the water. The Hogy® will dance and quiver - looking just like a wounded baitfish fleeing for its life.
GROUPER: A soft bait big enough to fit on a very large jig head is an effective technique for huge grouper
and cubera snappers. Anglers in Florida fish our Hogy® Lobsters on big jigs. We also like fishing Hogys
near structure as a top water bait. Inshore, 7” and 10” Hogy® Originals have been the most effective.
HALIBUT: The Hogy® Jiggn’ Bait is the most appropriate Hogy® for halibut as it will fit on just
about any size jig head, allowing you to reach greater depths. Amber and chartreuse are our most
popular colors.

SNOOK: Don’t be afraid of the size of the Hogy®, Snook aren’t! We recommend 7” Hogy® Original
rigged Texas style for these fish; go 10” if you’re looking for a “slob.” The 7” Hogy® makes a great mullet
imitation. You’ll be amazed by how far a snook will move away from structure to hit the 7” Hogy®.
REDFISH: Big redfish love Hogys. We’ve done the best with amber and chartreuse 6” Hogy®
Skinny and the 7” Hogy® Original on the flats with a slow “walk-the-dog” retrieve.
AMBERJACKS & GT: The 10” Hogy® Jiggn’ Bait fished “poppin’ “ style over reefs does the trick. Last May at
the Outer Banks, we did very well on Jack topping 40 pounds. The key is to fish them hard and fast, making that
Hogy® pop and crash across on the surface. Use the same Hogy® on a large jig head if they’re holding deep.
COBIA: The 10”, 14” and 18” Hogy® Originals are fantastic eel imitations for trophy cobia hunting. Black, Black
Pearl, Amber and Chartreuse are by far our biggest sellers with cobia anglers. We recommend tandem rigging our
larger baits while sight fishing for cobia but if the fish are hanging deep, the Hogy® Jiggn’ Bait is the way to go.
TARPON: The 7” Hogy® rigged Texas style on a large offset worm hook is deadly on baby tarpon. For larger fish, we
prefer fishing with our 10” and 14” Hogy® Originals. Black, bone and bubble gum are our favorites! If you’re fishing for big
tarpon in windy conditions, try our 10” Hogy® Double Wide - it weighs nearly 3 ounces so it can be cast with heavy gear.
COD & HADDOCK: Use the 10” Hogy® Originalas a dropper for whales. Try adding two dropper
loops above your sinker and fish with nothing but Hogys. Our Hogy® Drop-Shot rig is perfect for a
deadly jig and teaser combo. Haddock LOVE bubble gum colored Hogys.
CALICO BASS: Hogys have proven to be irresistible to calicos in the kelp beds off the West
Coast. We prefer to fish them “weedless,” casting the bait onto the beds and working them out
using a “walk the dog” retrieve.
TUNA: Hogys make great casting baits to breaking school tuna. The 10” Hogy® Double Wide is
HOT. Anglers also troll the 10” and 14” tandem rigged Hogys with great success. Daisy chains and
spreader bars rigged with Hogys are the ticket when tuna are keyed in on sand eels or small squid.
ALL PELAGIC SPECIES: Hogys make a fantastic strip bait or ballyhoo alternative when rigged
behind a trolling head. Hogys also make deadly pitch baits for fish holding on structure, in your
spread or as a drop back bait. Be rigged and ready!
