EXHIBITIONS
Portal #2 by Louise Silk
INTERWOVEN STATES: Contemporary fiber art exhibition by artists
from Pennsylvania and Ohio
April 8 - June 10, 2016
Fiber art practices have a regional historical significance within our local craft history. In today’s contemporary
technologically fueled world, textile artists are finding new ways to work with traditional materials, creating a
dialog with the past and reflecting the significance of contemporary culture on our lives today. This exhibition of
contemporary fiber art showcases artists from Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Artists include: Alyse C. Bernstein, Tony Bible, Terry Boyd, Pam George Valone, Lisa M. Haabestad, Carolyn
Kohut, Lauren Manger, Malgorzata Mosiek, Mike Nold, Meg Prall, Jane Ogren, Michael Radyk, Carly M.
Reed, Louise Silk, and Sarah Simmons.
Interwoven States is juried by Joanne Arnett. Ms. Arnett is a textile artist living in northern Ohio. She spent
most of her creative career in Germany and California, working as an artist and photographer, as well as in
the fashion industry. Her personal work combines the practices of photography and textiles into a single
discipline and explores the dualities of transience and permanence, public and private, the mundane and
the extraordinary. She has shown regionally and nationally. She is currently represented by Gallerie Noir in
Texas. Joanne received her BFA from California Design College and her MFA from Kent State University. She
is an assistant professor at Kent State University. www.joannearnett.net

EXHIBITIONS
Summer Solo Exhibition
June 18 - August 5, 2016
Sweetwater will be presenting a solo exhibition in our gallery for eight weeks. The artist presenting will be
from within a 200 mile radius of Pittsburgh, PA. We are excited to offer this opportunity to artists in our
region and are looking forward to see who the artist will be that presents a solo exhibition. The artist will
be announced on May 16th, 2016.
Winter In The City by Ron Copeland
REMix: Exhibition of artwork created with recycled materials
August 20 – September 16, 2016
In today’s culture of abundance we are plagued with left overs and waste. As a society we create more
garbage than any generation before us. And the question nags, what shall we do with all that stuff? ReMIX
is an exhibition of art made from all that stuff, highlighting regional artists who create new works from
items and materials that had a previous function. Their act of upcycling re-purposed materials is a kind of
contemporary alchemy, transforming the seemingly worthless into objects worthy of our gaze.
ReMIX is juried by Ron Copeland. Ron Copeland is a Pittsburgh based artist originally from Canton, OH.
He considers himself a self-taught artist but his graphic design studies at Kent State are a clear influence
on his work. He has become well known for radiant lamps made from recycled plexi-glass and assemblages
constructed from discarded wood. His interests have focused on salvaging materials from abandoned
spaces of the Rust Belt region. Taking fragments of what remains of houses or buildings he recreates the
space of a life left behind. He has shown his work nationally and is represented by Borelli-Edwards Gallery
in Pittsburgh, PA and Galerie F in Chicago, IL. www.roncopeland.tumblr.com

online at www.SweetwaterArtCenter.org/classes. Click on the “View/Register for Classes Online” link, enter the appropriate information, and
click “Search.” Click on your class to view the required materials.
SWEETWATER COURSE POLICY: Sweetwater makes every effort to maintain the schedule of courses as indicated in the catalog. However, we
reserve the right to cancel courses, change instructors, and combine classes when necessary without prior notification.

student has registered. Gift certificates can only be used when registering over the phone or in person. Online redemption is not available.
CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS: Sweetwater does not offer make-up classes or tuition reimbursement for student absenteeism. Sweetwater does
not prorate tuition for classes that the student cannot attend. If Sweetwater must cancel a class due to insufficient enrollment, registered
students will be notified one or two days before the start date, and tuition will be reimbursed within two weeks of notification. If the student
must cancel his/her enrollment in a course, the following cancellation policy will apply: Class cancellations must be made at least 3 business days
prior to the start date of class. Students may receive a partial refund ($25 cancellation fee per class will be applied) OR a credit voucher in the
full amount if they cancel no less than 3 business days before the class start date. No refunds or credit vouchers will be given without 3 business
days notice. Credit vouchers are non-transferable between students and may only be applied towards class tuition. Refunds will be processed
within 10 business days.
INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY: Sweetwater makes every effort possible to keep its programs running during periods of inclement weather.
Closing decisions are based on weather alerts, road and school closings, and the ability of the Sweetwater staff to get to and from the Center
and operate the facility safely. In case of closing and/or program cancellations, Sweetwater will update its website’s homepage, main voicemail, and Facebook page. Website: www.SweetwaterArtCenter.org; Main Voicemail: 412-741-4405; Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/
wherecreativityflows. PLEASE NOTE: Sweetwater no longer calls students to inform them of class cancellations due to inclement weather. In the
event that Sweetwater cancels a class due to inclement weather, a make-up class will be scheduled. If a make-up class cannot be scheduled,
students will be issued a credit voucher or refund for the cancelled class.
CHILD DROP-OFF AND DISMISSAL POLICY: The following policy applies to children enrolled in Preschool, Children’s, and Teen classes (ages 4-11):
In order to keep your child safe, please escort him/her to class every day. If anyone other than yourself is to pick your child up, please write a
note and give it to the instructor at class. If you give your teen permission to walk home or to meet you outside after class, then you must write
a note stating this and give it to the instructor. A photo ID must be shown when picking up children from class.
ACCESSIBILITY: Sweetwater welcomes individuals with disabilities to our facility and is committed to providing the best access possible to our
events and programming. We encourage questions, requests, and suggestions to help us achieve our ongoing goal of creating a comfortable,
enjoyable environment suited to all unique needs and abilities. Accessible entrances to our building include the Bank Street entrance (to the
lower level of our building) and Sweetwater’s parking lot entrance (to the upper level of our building). Once inside, the lower level and upper
level are connected only via stairs. Accessible restrooms and water fountains are available on each level. Due to the nature of our historic
building, Sweetwater’s gallery, located on the mezzanine, is not accessible for persons with limited mobility. Reserved parking is available for
people with disabilities on Bank Street and in Sweetwater’s parking lot. For inquiries concerning accommodations, please contact Alyssa Virgin
at 412-741-4405 or [email protected]. Large print materials are available upon request.
NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY: Participation in classes, workshops, camps, scholarship programs, and activities at Sweetwater Center for the

disability. Sweetwater Center for the Arts is an equal opportunity employer.
DISCARDED ARTWORK: Sweetwater is not responsible for student artwork left behind at the Center after the completion of a class.
PHOTO CONSENT: Students may be photographed and images may be reproduced on Sweetwater’s promotional materials. Authorization will
be assumed unless indication is given to the Education and Outreach coordinator, Derek Reese, via email at [email protected].
