Kindergarten Chicks
Have you ever seen baby chicks hatch? Well, the
kindergarteners at Charles Russell elementary school have!
On April 9, 2014, the Boyd County Extension Office brought
some eggs for hatching. The eggs were placed in both
kindergarten classrooms. The children observed the eggs
while in the incubator until they hatched. The teachers
wanted the children to learn about life cycles. They began
with 25 eggs and only 2 hatched! They hatched on April 30.
They took about 8 hours to fully hatch and the chicks don’t
have to eat for three days because they eat half of their shell.
After they hatched, Mr. Brown took the two chicks to a farm
and now they are safe! -Mimi Moore
March Madness Literacy Night
Coloring Easter Eggs
On March 27, 2014, at 5:30 pm, CRS had March Madness
Literacy Night. CRS teachers and students went to the
classrooms, and participated in activities while parents stayed
in the gym. Some activities they did included reading a book
and math bingo. Fifteen students attended with their
parents. The students who won reading awards were: Elli
Moore-Geyer’s class, Brady Marushi-Bonner, Kaia MantleMcDowell, Jaylin Stanley-Schirtzinger, Tucker Rogers-Bocook,
Emme Chaffin/Mason Kohut-Manning, Ashley Colley-King,
Gracie Madden-Rowlett, Bryson Hale-Ledford, Gwen AkersMoore, Spencer Greene-Hood, Melanie Grimm-McDavid,
Taylor York/Kendrick Hogsten-Foster, and Grace Sluss-Hall.
The overall winners were Primary-Tiffany Alfaro and
Intermediate-Grant Kelley. In my opinion, Literacy Night was
a chance to have fun with your friends in school! Luke Geyer
On April 14, Mrs. McDowell’s first grade class colored Easter
eggs. Around noon, Mrs. Spradlin started to boil the eggs.
Then around 1 pm, they began to dye the eggs. Mrs.
McDowell said the reason that they dyed eggs is because it
was an Easter tradition and some kids said they had never
had the chance to dye eggs because their parents were at
work or away. We were lucky to see their reactions to this
first-time experience. Mrs. McDowell’s class was fortunate to
have this opportunity. The best part was the kids were
allowed to eat the eggs after they dried. –Grant Kelley &
Terrick Smith

Kentucky History Projects
Earth Day
nd
On April 22 , both of Miss Rowlett’s third grade science
classes viewed a video about the history of Earth Day. Then
they wore plastic gloves and picked up litter around the
school grounds. They collected six garbage bags of paper,
plastic, aluminum, and cigarette butts. The students learned
it is important to take care of our planet, Earth! -Miss Rowlett
th
A few days ago on April 25 , Mrs. Moore’s social studies
classes did Kentucky History projects. They did them to show
Kentucky History and different landforms in Kentucky. The
students shared their projects and reports on different topics
about Kentucky during social studies class in Mrs. Moore’s
room. Some of the topics were about horses, forts, lakes, the
Civil War, farming, and Abe Lincoln. Each student made a
diorama and wrote a report on the information they found on
the Internet. They gave lots of facts. It was fun and
interesting watching them share their projects. –Taylor
A Great Day at Heritage Farm
Hamilton & Savannah Rigdon
Hot Diggity Dog Blues Night!
th
Have you ever wondered how people lived in the olden days?
The third graders at Charles Russell did just that by visiting
Heritage Farm in Huntington on April 25th! Students sat at
desks in a one room schoolhouse while the teacher explained
the discipline policy. Troubled kids had to put their nose
touching the blackboard, or wear a dunce cap while sitting in
the corner, or they got paddled. Life was hard in the olden
days. Kids had to do many chores, including: shucking the
corn, pumping the water, milking the cow, gathering the
eggs, grinding the corn, ironing the clothes, and churning the
butter. Sometimes they even gathered firewood for the
blacksmith. Girls learned to sew while boys learned to hunt.
Everyone realized that between 1850 and 1950 society
changed a great deal. Wood stoves became electric, lanterns
became light fixtures, cellars became refrigerators, and
letters became telephone calls. Because of Henry Ford, horse
and buggies became a thing of the past. He invented the
Model-T Ford which made cars affordable for everyone. The
third graders realized that life is not so hard today. We have
Wal-Mart, McDonald’s, and video games. Their chores consist
of feeding their pets or cleaning their room. I’d say everyone
agreed that kids these days have it pretty easy, and they
appreciated the hard work of the past. –Bethany Ledford
th
On May 6, 2014, the 5 /6 grade Harmonicats along with the
Huntington Harmonica Club let out their blues spirit! The fun
started at 6:30 and lasted till 8:30 pm at the Charles Russell
Elementary Gym. The Huntington Harmonica Club played
several blues hits. The Harmonicats followed with four
special songs! There was a $5 hot dog and dessert dinner
stand set up for everyone. The money raised will go to
purchase new harmonicas for next year’s students. There
were lots of videos and pictures being taken by the parents.
Faces of joy were spread throughout the CRS gym! -Mimi

Derby Hat Parade
Career Day
th
Career Day was held on May 26 at CRS. Members from the
community joined us to discuss their occupations with
students. Students heard from a wide array of interesting
careers: detective, martial arts gym owner, beautician, dance
instructor, doctor, food rep, radio broadcaster, firefighters,
physical therapist, sheriff’s deputy, lawyer/state legislator,
mechanical engineer, court reporter, HR specialist, and
principal. The students were scheduled to hear six
presenters. Sixth grade students were given the opportunity
to make adjustments to their schedule based on their
interests and ILPs. Several students took advantage of the
opportunity to dress-up to resemble their future careers.
Staff and students alike had a great day! During the
afternoon students were asked to reflect on the day and
respond by making some career day notes. The students also
wrote thank you notes to the presenters. Our 2014 Career
Day was a success and we look forward to next year’s event!
How do you celebrate Derby Day? Well Charles Russell
Elementary School celebrates in an interesting way. On May
2, 2014, the kindergarten, first, and second graders decorated
special hats for Derby Day. To show them off they marched
through the hallways with pride! There were a variety of hats
with multiple decorations including flowers, straw, confetti,
etc. There was lots of color! This took place around 9:00 am.
Kyra, in first grade created a hat that stood out like bright red
roses in yellow dandelions. She created a large hat with
rd
th
colorful feathers! It was beautiful! The remaining 3 , 4 , 5th,
th
and 6 grade students stood along the hallways enjoying the
beautiful hats. Based on all the facial expressions and
excitement, the parade was a great success!

Trip to Savage Branch
-Mrs. Shauna Brillhart, Counselor
Field Day
nd
Recently (May 22 ) the first grade went on a field trip to
Savage Branch. Savage Branch is a nature reserve maintained
by the Catlettsburg Refinery. A nature reserve is a place
where animals build their habitats. The students left by bus
at 8:30 am. At Savage Branch the students learned about
different plants and animals. Even I learned something new,
such as, a bat box (like a birdhouse only for a bat) is called a
rocket and that Kentucky’s state tree is the tulip poplar.
Savage Branch is a very educational place! There were also
many other facts that they learned. They even let the kids
look into birdhouses. The kids saw a chick-a-dee’s nest; some
kids observed that the chickadee’s eggs look like jelly beans.
Also, while they were there, the kids got to take a nature
hike. During their hike they had a scavenger hunt to find
things like habitats, reptiles, and mammals. They also caught
tadpoles from a pond with a net. Savage Branch is a fun and
educational place. Here you can catch tadpoles, take a hike,
and much more! Savage Branch is a great place for a group
or your own family! -Gwen Akers
th
On May 27 , 2014, at AK Steel Sports Park, Charles Russell
students participated in Track and Field Day. Track and Field
Day is to encourage students to get active and have
teamwork. Track and Field Day was organized by Coach
Arthur, with the PTO, and many volunteers helping out.
Some events were: sack race relay, waddle relay, bean bag
relay, dizzy relay race, hockey relay, hula hoop station, tennis
racket relay, hoppity hop relay, tweedle dee and tweedle
th
dum relay, parachute play, tug of war (6 only), free play and
relax time. In my opinion Track and Field Day was a big
success! -Isaac Campbell

5th Grade Play
5th Grade Field Trip
th
th
On May 29 the 5 grade classes went on their end of the
year field trip. We went to the Kentucky State Horse Park. All
year we have been selling stuff and having fund raisers so we
could ride on a charter bus to Lexington. We saw people
perform on horseback, rode on a trolly, toured a museum,
brushed miniature horses, and we got to see some recently
retired racehorses. I think the highlight of everyone’s day
was being able to see people riding their horses and making
their horses do different tricks. It was a great trip! -Taylor

Dance Competition
th
th
The 5 grade classes performed their annual 5 grade play on
th
May 28 . There were four performances in the CRS library.
This is so everyone would have a chance to see it as seating is
limited. Each class performed the play twice. Mrs. McDavid’s
class had the morning performances at 9:15 and 10 while
Mrs. Foster’s homeroom performed in the afternoon at 1 and
1:45 pm. This year’s play, written and directed by Ms.
Meade, was called “Those Groovy Aliens,” a sci-fi spoof. The
plot of the play involved some children helping aliens who
came to Earth thinking it was the 1960s. The children had to
keep law enforcement officers from finding the aliens so the
aliens would have time to repair their spaceship and leave.
th
The comedy was a great experience for the 5 grade
performers and fun for all other students, school staff,
parents, and others to see! It was a hit! -Mimi Moore
th
th
th
This past March 14 and 15 , 6 grade student, Maggie
Thompson, went with Yvonne DeKay School of Dance to the
Dance Masters of the Bluegrass competition that was held in
Lexington, KY. On the first day of the competition she
participated in several workshops and was recognized for her
performances during these workshops by being awarded two
different dance scholarships, one of which takes place in
Chicago, IL. During the actual competition phase of the
weekend, she brought home the following awards: creative
st
costuming; top score-1 place- in her junior solo division
(Musical Theatre); and she finished third out 40 performances
that took place that day. Great job, Maggie!
Pet Day
DARE Prize Winner
th
On May 7, 2014, all 6 graders in the Ashland School District
went to Gattiland to celebrate being drug free and to meet
th
other 6 graders before they head off to middle school next
year. Ashleigh Taylor from CRS won a bike along with a
helmet! Way to go, Ashleigh!
Best Female Athlete
rd
First grade had their 3 annual pet day on May, 29, 2014.
They could bring pets from home to share with their friends.
They also accepted donations of dog food to give to AARF.
They met on the front circle lawn of the school. The kids
really enjoyed seeing each other’s pets. The pets were dogs,
cats, a turtle, and two chinchillas. The first grade teachers are
planning a pet day again next year! -Dakotah Forth & Bethany
Second grader, Shaelyn Steele, was chosen the 8-10
year old best female athlete at the Ashland Grade
School Track Meet this year. High five, Shaelyn!

Gold Medalist in Karate
“Frozen” Testing Kick-Off
th
Richard Runyon, 5 grader, recently competed in a Karate
competition. He won four gold medals—one for open hand
form; one for weapon form, and two for sparring.
Outstanding, Richard!
Tumbling Star
th
On May 13 CRS students and staff participated in a testing
kickoff for the upcoming KPREP state test. Mr. Salyers started
with a few words of encouragement to the students.
Teachers presented a slide show presentation with pictures
of staff members acting out the lyrics to the “Let it Go… Let
Your Knowledge Show” testing parody. Our fourth grade
teachers performed as three other talented staff members
sang “Do You Want to Take the KPREP”. Kindergarten and
the third grade classes performed public service
announcements between scenes to remind students about
things they can do to prepare for testing, like getting enough
sleep and eating a good breakfast. Parents showed their
support to the students by writing a note for the “Blizzard of
Encouragement” wall. -Mrs. Brillhart
Fifth grade student, Mimi Moore, competed at the Ohio State
th
tumbling competition on April 12 . She placed in the top 10
overall. This qualifies her to compete in the Nationals in June
in Louisville. Super! Go for it, Mimi!
