FOOD FOR HEALTH
The Benefits of Whole Food Supplements By Nikolas Clarke
Nature knew what she was
doing when she packaged all
the vitamins and minerals
the human body needs to
be healthy in fresh fruits
and vegetables. A plate
full of these nutrient-rich
whole foods might just be
the best multivitamin out
there – followed closely
by a multivitamin made
with those same sources
of vitality. Whole food
supplements are made
up of concentrated,
dehydrated whole foods,
and they take advantage of
the best that nature has to
offer in order to strengthen
and complete a balanced diet.
Rather than thinking of whole food supplements as medicine or, well,
supplementary, think of them as concentrated food sources. Dark, leafy
greens such as kale have worked up quite the reputation as nutritional
powerhouses – and they are – but a cup of steamed kale offers up only a tenth
of the body’s daily calcium requirement. Drying that same kale and grinding
it into powder as part of a whole food supplement concentrates the many
vitamins and minerals contained in the phenomenal leafy green.
There’s a reason nature doesn’t deliver nutrients in isolation. Whole plants
provide a broad spectrum of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and more
– including phytonutrients. New phytonutrients are being discovered
every day as understanding of nutrition deepens. These natural
chemical compounds are responsible for everything from the
deep purple of cabbage to the pungent aroma of onions
and garlic, and are known to have antioxidant and antiinflammatory qualities. Not only that, phytonutrients
promote better health and account for the synergistic
benefits of whole food supplements, making it
possible for the body to use key vitamins and
minerals more easily.
When a nutrient is highly “bioavailable”,
that means it is easily absorbed and
assimilated by the body. Whole foods,
and whole food supplements, offer
unsurpassed bioavailability. Seasonal
availability of fresh produce, hectic
schedules, and other challenges can
get in the way of proper nutrition,
and even eating the right kinds of

foods every day is not always enough, which
is where supplements come in. Whole food
supplements, full of the vibrant nutrition
you need to thrive, are the best choice for a
preventative measure and nutritional support.
In order to avoid damaging the many
phytonutrients and sensitive vitamins and
minerals that naturally occur in whole foods,
whole food supplements are minimally
processed at low temperatures. These
gentle processing techniques are specially
formulated to preserve the life force of whole
foods. That way, the delicate nutrients are
protected, ready and waiting for your body
just as nature intended.
Whole food supplements aren’t just better
for you, they’re good for the planet. Since
quality is the name of the game in this case,
whole food supplements emphasize organic
agriculture and sustainable harvesting
practices for an abundant bounty of
superfoods from kale to chlorella. Who would
have thought your choice of supplements
could have far-reaching impact on the health
of the environment, as well as your own?
You are what you eat. Are you feeling whole?

FOOD FOR HEALTH
Eat Your Way to
Wellness
By Dr Brenda M Leite
We are in an era of inflammation. The
root issue of most disease in the body
is inflammation, from the common
cold to cancer. We have reached
pandemic levels when one in three
people worldwide will develop cancer
in their lifetime. There are numerous
causes of inflammation, some that
we can control and others we cannot.
However every instance we eat, we can control our
nourishment choices. So much occurs with our food supply
behind the scenes. When you purchase food from your local
marketplace, there can be misrepresentation in terms of the
safety of what you are eating. Your everyday diet choices
are the foundation of your wellness, for young and old, male
and female. (This approach also applies to your pets!). We
can alter many disease patterns by changing dietary choices.
In Canada, up to 70% of processed foods in grocery stores
contain Genetically Engineered ingredients. Sometimes
referred to as GMO food, genetically modified organism,
this food is not a familiar substance to our bodies. Scientists
are starting to see the ill effects upon butterflies and bees,
and, when you understand how the body works, there is no
question; the GE foods are harmful to the human organism.
What is genetically engineered food? It is food that would
never naturally occur. This alteration of atomic structure in
the food is created by taking genes from organisms such
as bacteria, viruses and/or animals, usually an unrelated
species, and creating a new organism that is a stranger to
our bodies. It is all about our innate ability to perceive DNA
coding and molecular structures. The goal for GE foods is to
speed up production and growth periods and ultimately feed
the bottom line of commerce. Common foods today that
can be engineered in this way are corn, soy, canola, among
numerous others. Consider the animal feed of the meat
you are eating because if it is GMO food then what are you
eating in the meat? Most cattle, pig, goat and chicken feed is
made of a large percentage of GMO corn as it is inexpensive
and readily available. (and heavily sprayed with pesticides.)
We are what we eat as well as the animals we ingest as food.
Their diet in this way becomes part of our “nourishment”,
chemicals and all.
The body/ mind connection is a vital communication
pathway to understand why changing the genetic structure
6I

of our foods will have negative effects on our health. When
we eat, our body is assessing the DNA patterning of what we
are ingesting. For example, when you eat an organic apple,
your brain and digestive system are in communication. They
recognize that this is a familiar molecular structure and it is
safe to consume so it is digested easily with no inflammation.
When you eat foods contaminated with pesticides, your
brain and digestive process will identify a harmful substance
and create inflammation throughout the digestive system to
protect your body from absorbing the toxin. Understanding
that your digestive system represents seventy percent of
your immune health, this is a serious consideration. Eating
foods that have been altered from their natural state will
encourage an increase in mucosal linings in the small and
large intestines, the liver will become overworked trying to
remove the toxins. Yeast will overgrow and strep and staph
can overpopulate to create a barrier. This can be a slow
process which you may not notice at the time of eating.
Sometimes the digestive imbalances appear as Irritable Bowel
Syndrome, Diverticulitis, Diverticulosis and Cancer which are
all inflammatory responses. Parasites also love to live in this
thick, warm, mucous-rich and stagnant environment.
In addition to GMO and chemically contaminated food, we have
the complication of the irradiation of food. This falls under the
category of Nuclear Science. The food is exposed to ionizing
radiation to destroy bacteria, viruses, and micro organisms on
the food from other countries. The irradiation of the food causes
a restructuring of the genetic structure of the food!
The only way I can see the halting of the poisoning of our
environment and our bodies is when the consumer demands
organic, healthy, local food. The consumer needs to pressure
the governing bodies to label our products with the country
of origin of all ingredients in the product and the country of
origin of manufacturing of the product, labelling of all foods
that have been irradiated, and full disclosure of chemical
and pesticide treated foods. Did you know that mandatory
labelling is required for all genetically engineered foods in
Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan?
Shop at your local organic market where foods have
integrity, digestibility and a high energetic vibration that will
encourage good health. Organic foods are not irradiated,
exposed to synthetic chemicals and are not genetically
altered. Take your first steps to health and well-being by
bringing awareness to your every day food. Your children
will thank you for this when Mother Earth is healthier
and their cancer and inflammation statistics are greatly
improved from present day. Consider this…

Body/Mind Connection Positive Mind,
Nutrition and How The Right Supplements Can Help
By Alicia Gonzalez
Raspberries contain many vitamins, minerals, plant compounds and antioxidants known as anthocyanins
that may protect against cancer. Tomatoes contain lycopene, an antioxidant that attacks roaming oxygen
molecules, known as free radicals, that are suspected of triggering cancer. It appears that the hotter the
weather, the more lycopene tomatoes produce. They also have vitamin C, an antioxidant which can
prevent cellular damage that leads to cancer. Watermelons, carrots, and red peppers also contain these
substances, but in lesser quantities. It is concentrated by cooking tomatoes. Scientists in Israel have
shown that lycopene can kill mouth cancer cells. An increased intake of lycopene has already been linked
to a reduced risk of breast, prostate, pancreas and colorectal cancer. (Note: Recent studies indicate that for
proper absorption, the body also needs some oil along with lycopene.
Seeds & Nuts
Flax contains lignans, which may have
an antioxidant effect and block or
suppress cancerous changes. Flax is
also high in omega-3 fatty acids, which
are thought to protect against colon cancer and heart disease.
Nuts contain the antioxidants quercetin and campferol that
may suppress the growth of cancers. Brazil nut contains 80
micrograms of selenium, which is important for those with
prostate cancer.
Herbs & Spices
Garlic has immune-enhancing allium compounds (dialyl
sultides) that appear to increase the activity of immune cells
that fight cancer and indirectly help break down cancer
causing substances. These substances also help block
carcinogens from entering cells and slow tumor development.
Diallyl sulfide, a component of garlic oil, has also been shown
to render carcinogens in the liver inactive.
Studies have linked garlic–as well as onions,
leeks, and chives–to lower risk of stomach
and colon cancer. It is believed garlic
may help prevent stomach cancer
because it has anti-bacterial effects
against a bacterium, Helicobacter
pylori, found in the stomach and
known to promote cancer there.
Rosemary may help increase the activity of detoxification
enzymes. An extract of rosemary, termed carnosol, has inhibited
the development of both breast and skin tumors in animals. We
haven’t found any studies done on humans. Rosemary can be
used as a seasoning. It can also be consumed as a tea: Use 1 tsp.
dried leaves per cup of hot water; steep for 15 minutes.
Tumeric (curcuma longa), a member of the ginger family,
is believed to have medicinal properties because it inhibits
production of the inflammation-related enzyme cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2), levels of which are abnormally high in
certain inflammatory diseases and cancers, especially bowel
and colon cancer.

Beverages
Red wine, even without alcohol, has polyphenols that may
protect against various types of cancer. Polyphenols are potent
antioxidants, compounds that help neutralize disease-causing
free radicals. Also, researchers at the University of North
Carolina’s medical school in Chapel Hill found the compound
resveratrol, which is found in grape skins. It appears that
resveratrol inhibits cell proliferation and can help prevent
cancer. However, the findings didn’t extend to heavy imbibers,
so it should be used in moderation. In addition, alcohol can be
toxic to the liver and to the nervous system, and many wines
have sulfites, which may be harmful to your health. Note: some
research indicates that alcohol is considered a carcinogen, you
can switch to non-alcoholic wines.
Green Tea and Black Tea contain certain antioxidants known
as polyphenols (catechins) which appear to prevent cancer
cells from dividing. Green tea is best, followed by our more
common black tea. According to a report in the July 2001 issue
of the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry, these polyphenols that
are abundant in green tea, red wine and olive oil, may protect
against various types of cancer. Dry green tea leaves, which are
about 40 percent polyphenols by weight,
may also reduce the risk of cancer of the
stomach, lung, colon, rectum,
liver and pancreas, study
findings have suggested.

Vitamin B1
Deficiency
Can Cause Permanent Brain Damage
and Coma but is Rarely Diagnosed
By PF Louis
(NaturalNews) Thiamine, or vitamin B1, is one of eight distinct
members of the B complex, which helps maintain or improve
brain and nervous system functioning and liver health, and
resist the effects of stress on the immune system. Thiamine was
named B1 simply because it was the first of the B complex series
discovered.
You need it to form adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which every
cell of the body uses for metabolic energy. One of the signs of
B1 deficiency is fatigue, but that symptom covers many other
deficiencies as well. There are other more distinct attributes of
vitamin B1 deficiency that have been isolated.
B complex vitamins are water soluble and cannot be stored in
the body, except for one form of thiamine that is fat soluble
known as benfotiamine. Its application will be discussed later in
this article.
Researchers at the Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood,
Illinois, published a report in the journal Scientific American
Medicine explaining how thiamine deficiency can lead to
permanent brain damage from which there may be no recovery.
Wernicke encephalopathy is a brain disease that's caused by
metabolic disorders and toxic substances, which can occur
from a lack of sufficient vitamin B1. In first-world countries, this
malnutrition disorder is rare in our culture and occurs mostly in
alcoholics, anorexics, Crohn's victims, people who use diuretics
and those undergoing kidney dialysis.
But the Loyola neurologists claim that Wernicke
encephalopathy is underdiagnosed. Many victims slip under
the radar. They estimate that perhaps 3 percent of Americans
suffer from the extremes of Wernicke that lead to Korsakoff
syndrome (KS).
"Toxic and metabolic encephalopathies may range in severity
from the acute confusional state to frank coma," wrote Loyola
neurologists Matthew McCoyd, MD, Sean Ruland, DO, and
Jose Biller, MD. "As permanent injury may occur, an organized
approach is needed to make an accurate and rapid diagnosis."
Permanent injury can occur after the rapid onset of acute
encephalopathy with symptoms of confusion, hallucinations,
coma, loss of muscle coordination and double vision or
involuntary eye movements. If ignored and not diagnosed as
a vitamin B1 or thiamine deficiency that can be remedied by
supplementation, it can lead to late stage Wernicke.
Then things get really delusional. Untreated, Wernicke
encephalopathy can lead to KS, characterized by profound
memory loss and an inability to form memories leading
to confabulation (making up memories). The 2000 movie
Memento offers an entertaining example of extreme memory
loss and confabulation.
About 80 percent of Wernicke encephalopathy patients develop
KS, and once this occurs, only about 20 percent of those
patients recover. Then brain damage can induce coma and
10 I
Living Well Naturally with Nature’s Emporium
I

death. Prior to that, B1/thiamine supplementation usually turns
things around.
The pharmacist who came in from the cold
Pharmacist Stuart Lindsay had submitted an article to
Orthomolecular.org titled "Confessions of a Frustrated
Pharmacist" in which he explains how he had abandoned
conventional chemical solutions and used supplements to
overcome his own diabetes type 2 symptoms, especially the
neuropathy that was affecting his feet.
Orthomolecular medicine uses high-dose supplements while
eschewing pharmaceutical drugs. After getting frustrated by fellow
graduate pharmacy students and teachers shunning his vitamin
discoveries, Stuart posted his article at Orthomolecular.org.
His symptoms of peripheral neuropathy affected the feet and
lower legs with unwanted tingling sensations, pain or a lack of
any sensation at all from numbness. Big Pharma offered him no
solutions. This can lead to the barbaric solution of amputation
if unchecked.
Neuropathy is a less life-threatening neurological disorder than
Wernicke, but it can progress to more extreme complications
such as Wernicke or KS. Thus, the B1/thiamine solution was the
same, except Stuart chose to use the fat-soluble benfotiamine
for supplementing thiamine to optimize results and eliminate
his neuropathy.

BODY HEALTH
Magnesium
and your health
By Dr. David Jockers
(NaturalNews) Magnesium is present in all cells of the body and is involved in over
300 enzymatic processes, including energy production. Magnesium is essential for
maintaining normal bone density, normal cardiac rhythmicity, normal pulmonary
function, and normal blood glucose regulation. Magnesium is one of the most
common world-wide deficiencies and it plays a role in most of the common health
struggles people face every day.
Most doctors are not trained to detect magnesium deficiencies. Magnesium deficiency
is often misdiagnosed because it does not show up in blood tests as only 1% of the
body's magnesium is stored in the blood.
Dr. Norman Shealy's, M.D., Ph.D. is an American neurosurgeon and a pioneer in pain
medicine says, "Every known illness is associated with a magnesium deficiency," and
that, "magnesium is the most critical mineral required for electrical stability of every
cell in the body. A magnesium deficiency may be responsible for more diseases than
any other nutrient."
Magnesium deficiency rates:
Research has shown that 68% of individuals in the US do not consume the daily
recommended amount of dietary magnesium and 19% do not even consume half of
the RDA levels which are 310-420mg daily. Most researchers believe this RDA level is
far too low and if it was raised to where it should be we would see that roughly 80% of
Americans are consuming insufficient quantities.
Magnesium is a basic element of life much like water and air. We need a lot of
magnesium, roughly 1000 mgs/day for a healthy active individual to keep up with the
demands of the body. Magnesium is to the body like oil is to a car's engine and if we
are deficient problems will arise.
Calcium: magnesium ratios:
Our current diet is rich in calcium but insufficient in magnesium. Our ancient ancestors
had a a diet that was close to 1:1 whereas our present-day diets are more like 5:1 and up
to 15:1. Having roughly ten times more calcium than magnesium is a serious proble.
This elevated calcium to magnesium ratio is a major player in conditions such as
mitral valve prolapse, migraines, attention deficit disorder, autism, fibromyalgia,
anxiety, asthma and allergies. Wherever there is elevated calcium and insufficient
magnesium inside of cells the effects are muscle contractions, spasms, twitches and
even convulsions.
Magnesium and detoxification:
Without sufficient magnesium the body struggles to make and utilize protein and
enzymes. It is also unable to properly methylate and detoxify and/or process and
utilize anti-oxidants like vitamin C and E.
Magnesium is extremely critical for proper detoxification processes. As our world has
gotten increasingly more toxic, our need for magnesium has increased. Meanwhile,
the nutrition of our modern food has increasingly been diminished. This is due to
overcropping, poor composting and pesticides/herbicide chemical residue which
reduces nutritional quality of the soil and produce.

in Kennesaw, Georgia where he specializes in functional nutrition, functional medicine and

Health Effects on Canadians:
According to a report by the House of Commons Standing
Committee on Health (2007), Canada has one of the highest rates
of childhood obesity in the developed world, ranking fifth out of 34
OECD countries. In addition, 26% of young Canadians aged 2 to 17
years are overweight or obese (Leo, 2007, pp. 1-2). These rates were
alarming in 2007 and have continued to increase today. Although
various factors play a part in the obesity epidemic we are currently
experiencing in Canada, lack of physical activity is a major player.
Investing in Outdoor Play
Recently the City of Richmond in B.C. invested $1 million in building
the Terra Nova Adventure Play Environment which involved
children in the design process while planning the park. The outdoor
nature park features a timber swing, aerial rope walkway, a meadow
maze and a stainless steel rolling hill and much more.

Ontario has a wide variety of hiking trails, municipal and provincial

Treating Anxiety, Depression & Stress
Using Traditional
Chinese Medicine
By Kelly Linstead, RTCMP, RAc, RHN, PTS, HYI, Reflexologist
Anxiety is a mental disorder that affects
literally millions of people. Under stress, blood
and energy is diverted to muscles and the
cardiovascular system for fight or flight. Heart
rate increases, energy is released from fat to fuel
the muscles. Systems such as the digestive and
reproductive are shut off because they are not
necessary under stress.
Illness arises over time as stressors become
more constant, emotions are suppressed or
there’s a traumatic event. Blood pressure remains elevated; there is a
sense of nervousness, and anxiety.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient healing system of
medicine that has evolved over 5000 years, used by millions of people,
making TCM one of the oldest medical systems today. It includes
the use of acupuncture, acupressure, Tuina massage, herbs and
movement. In TCM, all cells and organs are linked thru one energetic
system connected by meridian or channels.
TCM views all emotional conditions as it relates to the meridians. For
example, sadness or grief, blocks Lung and Heart energy. Repressed
emotion or anger blocks the Liver energy. Fear depletes the Kidney
energy. Qi (energy) and blood flow eventually stagnates and can lead
to stiffness in the muscles, headaches, sleep disorders, depression,
moodiness, frustration, irritability, problems with memory, lack of
concentration, loss of appetite, and sexual dysfunction, digestive
problems, chronic fatigue, lower back pain, and more. Over time can
develop to more serious health problems such as diabetes, asthma,
cancer or thyroid deficiency.
Acupuncture seeks to restore any energy imbalances, stimulating the
body's own healing process to restore its natural balance.
Acupuncture is profoundly relaxing, restoring balance to the central
nervous system. Most people feel connected, peaceful and deeply
relaxed after treatment. This feeling becomes a more continuous
experience with repetitive treatment.
Acupuncture releases the body’s own natural analgesics, endorphins
bringing oxygen to the tissues enhancing circulation of blood and
lymphatic fluids. Treatments can also help release emotional, mental
and biological toxins from the body. It decreases the stress hormone
cortisol, lowers blood pressure, and creates a sense of well-being.
Deep breathing, meditation, exercise and yoga as part of the healing
process often help one feel more control over their anxiety, calm
and have insight. It’s a time to learn about you in order
for change.

sessions over an eight-week period. At the end of
the study, 64% of the participants were judged to be
in full remission of their symptoms.
An article in CNS Neuroscience and Therapeutics
proved that acupuncture is comparable to
cognitive-behavioral therapy, which psychologists
commonly use to treat anxiety.
Beijing Medical University compared the use
of traditional acupuncture to the use of the
antidepressant drug amitriptyline in the treatment
of depression and anxiety. Results showed that
acupuncture is as effective as amitriptyline in the
treatment of depression and even more effective
for anxiety symptoms.
A study from China proved acupuncture reduced
anxiety and depression in patients with chronic
physical illness, where the psychological state
of the patient was exacerbating their physical
condition, contributing to deteriorating health.
After just one month of treatment, anxiety had
decreased to normal levels in 70% of the patients
and depression in 90%.
TCM is much more comprehensive and much
less invasive than using SSRI (selective serotonin
reuptake inhibitors) medications. While some
medications have been known to ease anxiety,
they may also produce undesirable side effects and
toxins while suppressing the symptoms.

Call to Action
By Marie Ryckman, Psychotherapist
BODY HEALTH
hand. The room begins to fill with the scent of fresh lemon.
You cut a wedge and bring that wedge up to your mouth, biting
into it, filling your mouth with the juice.
When something is wrong in the body we often blame the
body part as if it is separate from the rest of us. The pain or
dis-ease is the body trying to talk to us, it is saying, “Hey take a
closer look here, there is something out of balance.” The longer
you ignore the ‘call to action’ the worse the symptoms get.
Take notice of your throat, your mouth, is it puckered, watering?
Do they feel different, like you just ate a lemon? Probably at the
very least there was an increase in saliva production.
Symptoms can come from:
That was just one time. Imagine if you have a reoccurring
negative thought, maybe it enters your mind daily and it’s been
there for 5 years. What effect would that have on your body?
• Eating foods that your body does not agree with.
• Having negative thoughts about the world, yourself, or
people around you.
•
•
•
•
Holding onto ways of being that do not serve your higher good.
Trying to control people.
Toxic environments/relationships.
Living with fear, worry, shame, guilt, anger.
These can all cause the physical body to become unbalanced.
Our thoughts create reactions in our body. Many of us have
heard of Louise Hay who has published many books on the
subject. Learning how to obtain wisdom from our own bodies
is invaluable. In this article I have added an exercise for you to
get a feeling of how thoughts create reactions in the body.
Try this exercise:
Take a few deep breaths and relax into where you sit, and
gently soften your eyes. Imagine yourself in a room. In that
room there is a wooden table. As you walk closer to that table
you notice a lemon on a plate. Beside that plate there is a knife.
You cut the lemon in half and some juice squirts onto your
Your body is preparing to eat and digest the lemon and does
not know the difference between real or imagined.
Learning to listen to your body takes patience, and a
willingness to be silent to connect with your body. It is a daily
and a second-by-second practice of being present. Although
often challenging, it is very rewarding. With the guidance of a
Psychotherapist asking the right questions you can often get
down to the root cause or dominant thought that has created
the pain or dis-ease. They can also help you to heal that which
is out of balance at a deep level.
It is beneficial to work on both the physical and emotional
levels when dealing with any ailment. Instead of blaming that
part of your body that’s causing you pain or discomfort, treat it
like a partner, a ‘call to action’!

FOOD FOR HEALTH
Healthy food pairings that
Supercharge health and diet
By Sandeep Godiyal
(NN) What if eating the right combinations of foods had the
ability to impact the body for the good? Some things just go
together well, but inside the body they can pack a powerful
punch when paired with the right component. So many
people want to go on restrictive diets that are actually not
healthy. Having a varied diet that incorporates a wide variety
of nutrients is not only healthy but can help lose weight faster.
To super boost a healthy eating lifestyle, try pairing some of
the following blends.
1. Tomatoes and avocado
This dynamic duo is known to reduce inflammation.
Tomatoes are commonly used in Mexican foods, and adding
a little avocado may take it to a whole new level. Avocado has
a healthy fat and it can absorb lycopene in the body. A study
from the Ohio State University showed that people who added
avocado to their salsa mix were absorbing more than 4x more
lycopene. Eating foods rich in lycopene plays a role in cancer
prevention. It can also help with inflammatory disease and
can prevent cataracts.
2. Green tea and lemon juice
This pair allows the body to have greater antioxidant absorption.
Any tea with lemon tastes good, but adding lemon juice to a
drink has a great deal of health benefits. The citrus juice when
added to green tea helps the body to have an increased ability to
absorb antioxidants. The more lemon juice the better.

3. Pasta and vinegar
Pasta is great but adding a bit of vinegar to it will help a
person feel full longer and fight fat. Many people eat a big
plate of pasta but are hungry soon after. Because of its sugar
content, pasta causes one's sugar levels to spike. However, the
European Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that vinegar can
reduce these glucose spikes. Cold pasta salads with vinegar
dressing work well.
4. Skim milk and banana
Want stronger bones, have some skimmed milk and bananas.
Dairy products are full of calcium. Bananas help with calcium
absorption and can create strong and healthy bones. Try a
smoothie with bananas and milk and add some oatmeal for
bulk. Bones become brittle as person begins to age, but the
potassium and calcium in this mixture is great for bone health.
5. Fish and red wine
Fish and red wine are both known to enhance heart health,
but putting them together is an ultra-mix for the body. A nice
piece of salmon with a glass of red wine may be heart healthy
and provide great antioxidants for the whole body. An omega3-rich fatty fish, like salmon and trout, just increases these
body benefits further. But bear in mind they are not calorie
free. Try to stick to a glass of wine that is about 4 ounces
coupled with 4 ounces of fish, and add garlic to the mix for an
extra immune system boost. Talk about a delicious treat that
is also healthy, fish with garlic and red wine is a truly heart
healthy dinner.

Beginning with a traditional gouda
recipe, this raw milk cheese is aged for
a minimum 9 months. Each cylinder
is marked with information pertaining
to the producer of the milk used. This
creates traceability and accountability for
the quality of each wheel.
The paste is a pale yellow with many
small holes. The texture is slightly

When savoured, Eweda Cru is nutty at

This exceptional cheese has won multiple

age and preserve the flavor. Each wheel
is placed on a pine board in our humidity

Fresh Cheddar being only one day old is light

Upon its launch in 2011, it proved to be a

Fromagerie Medard, Saguenay Lac St Jean, PQ
There are many great cheeses, but not all of them are crowd-pleasers. Quebec’s 14 Arpents or is such
a cheese. Made in square moulds, its pale-copper rind encloses a semi-soft, buttercup-yellow
paste that smells of fresh milk. You will get a slight barny note and a not-unpleasant tinge of
bitterness from the washed-rind, but on the palate this cheese is overwhelmingly smooth
and creamy with hints of nuts, tang and salt.
Its rich texture and delicate flavours will appeal to timid palates and cheese
aficionados alike. It’s also a great stand-by in the cheese drawer; slice it up
with a fresh baguette or a few grapes – be it for brunch or after dinner.

STOP PAIN NOW WITH
Ku Nye Tibetan Massage
By Alicia Gonzalez, Ku Nye Tradiditional Tibetan Massage Therapist
What is Ku Nye?
Ku Nye originated from the ancient
kingdoms of Tibet over 3900 years
ago and is a practice indigenous to
the Tibetan Medical tradition. Earliest
Tibetans practiced Ku Nye through
the diagnosis and application of
specific infused oil or substances
extracted from butter to treat the
person’s imbalance or constitution. Tree branches, sticks
and stones were widely used as part of therapy to exert
pressure on different parts and points of the body in order to
restore the individual to a state of health and wellbeing.
Literally, Ku means ‘to apply’ or to anoint the body with
therapeutic oils to be absorbed through the skin and Nye
refers to the actual massage. Techniques of Nye include the
kneading, rubbing and pressing of muscles and tendons and
the application of pressure to various points and channels.
Chi is the final part of Ku Nye therapy which involves
cleaning the oils from the body using barley or chickpea
powder. Other ingredients may be added to the base powders
depending on the person’s diagnosed condition. Another
common name for Ku Nye is Chukpa (Tib. Byugpa)
The Traditional Tibetan Medicine system is a detailed and
integrated one with 2 main objectives; prevention aspect of
illness and the curative aspects of illness where treatments
generally fall into four basic categories
1. Therapeutic Diet
2. Modifications to Lifestyle
3. Use of Herbal Medicines
4. Application of External Therapies
Ku Nye belongs to the fourth category of treatment and is
part of a wealth of external therapies available in Traditional
Tibetan Medicine used to maintain or restore balance to the
organism. Other external therapies include; various types of
moxabustion, stick therapy, cupping, Lums bathing therapy,
stone and shell massage, and the use of compresses.
The rejuvenating and restorative benefits and functions
of Ku Nye are mentioned in many original Tibetan texts
including the Bum Shi, Gyud Shi and all its commentaries
and Ton Huang medical text. Some of the benefits include
the elimination of toxins which store in the body and
increased vitality, the reduction and alleviation of various
types of pain and pain syndromes, the calming of nervous
disorders including insomnia, depression and anxiety.

Life
By Sandra Wells RHN, RYT
Yes, it’s happened
again. Summer
has come to an
end and it’s time
to rev up our lives
and embrace the
mayhem of a
new school year.
Get ready for
those crazy mornings, over-scheduled
weeknights and that weekend filled with
never-ending obligations. There will
be no shortage of advice to help in this
endeavor, finding new and innovative
ways to cram more of our to-do list
into our waking hours. If we were just
more prepared, more organized, more
something life will be less chaotic.
Life should flow more easily. But is there
room in our lives for ease? Every minute
of our day and our children’s day is
accounted for. There is an undercurrent
that seems to go un-noticed, a constant
driving pace. When do we get to rest?
may also be times when it’s possible to
slow down. Challenge yourself and your
family to see how long one bite can
last. Make it a contest! Experts suggest
chewing 20-30 times per bite would
be optimal for digestion. In a perfect
world, eating would not be a race to
the finish but rather an event that was
conscious and possibly even savored.
Don’t under-estimate the power of your
own breath. It has amazing healing
abilities but often goes un-noticed. The
average respiratory rate for adults is 10
to 14 breaths per minute or 600 to 840
per hour. How many do you notice?
When you bring your awareness to
your own breath you unite your body
with your mind, existing completely
in the present moment. There is time,
even in the busiest day, for a few long,
slow, easy breaths. Maybe before a
meal, or halfway through, or when your
waiting in line or stuck in traffic. There
are lots of opportunities.FYI - Taking
a deep breath doesn’t mean sucking
in your stomach and inflating your
chest. Actually, the opposite is true.
Do we make time in our busy schedule
to unwind, decompress at the end of a
busy day or do we crash in a heap on
the couch, glad the day has finally come
to end and hoping we can find the
energy for tomorrow.
We say that we desire more peace,
calm, and tranquility in our lives but
do we leave space for such things?
Are these qualities that we encourage
our children to value and cultivate
within themselves? Surely if they are
important they need to be honoured,
encouraged, and perhaps even taught.
There are hundreds of opportunities
throughout the day to bring a little
balance back into our lives, slow
down and create the space for calm
to exist. Mealtime can be a wonderful
opportunity to change the pace of
the day. There’s even a ‘slow food’
movement, created in response to our
fast food culture.
“Hurry up and finish dinner. We don’t
have all day.” This sounds all too
familiar. I realize there are times when
there is a schedule to keep but there

Deep breathing begins in your belly
as the diaphragm expands downward
allowing your lungs to fill naturally.
Breath in, allowing your stomach to
expand out making a balloon, breath
out, and your stomach collapses back
down.Practice with the whole family
to make sure everyone understands
the concept. Then begin looking for
times when you can sneak it in. You
could start with just a breath or two and
increase to several minutes. Notice
how you feel after compared to just
moments before.
Breath is a powerful tool that can de-stress
and tap into the body’s infinite healing
ability. Many yogic traditions work with
breath to expand upon these benefits.
You could pick up a cd or ask your local
yoga instructor for more guidance.
Turn off the radio and allow the silence
to fill the space. Notice those moments
in our lives where nothing is happening
and embrace it. It’s not always about
trying to fit more in but rather learning
to be comfortable with the stillness.

3 Ways to Boost Your
Metabolism + Lose Weight
By Melissa Hendricks, M.ED, ACSM-HFI, ACE
You’ve probably all heard it (or said it) before: “I have a slow
metabolism, so I can’t lose weight.” But what does that really
mean? Let me explain: Metabolism is the burning of calories
necessary to supply the body with the energy it needs to
function on a daily basis. Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is
composed of three components:
Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), which is about 65 to 75 percent
of the total calories burned in a day, are the calories burned
during basic bodily functions such as breathing or sitting.
Thermic Effect of Food (TEF), which is about 5 to 10 percent
of total caloric burn, are the calories used to digest food.
Physical Activity Energy Expenditure (PAEE) burns the
reminder of calories. This includes any type of activity
where you are physically moving (walking, weight lifting,
playing sports, running, etc.).
There are many factors that affect your Basal Metabolic Rate:
age (metabolism slows 5 percent every decade after age 30),
gender, muscle mass, activity level, genetics and thyroid
function. The only two factors that you can control are
muscle mass and activity level.
By being physically active you can help to give our
metabolism a boost not only during your workout but after
too. Aerobic activity such as walking, jogging, or cycling will
burn a high number of calories during the actual workout,
increasing the percentage of calories burned by PAEE. A
30 minute, moderate-intensity cardio workout can burn
anywhere from 200 to 500 calories in one session.
Weight training, on the other hand, will typically burn fewer
calories during the actual exercise session, but has been
shown to keep your RMR at a higher level for a longer period
of time after the workout. Weight training also helps to
increase your overall muscle mass, which is another factor
in increasing RMR. That’s because muscle tissue burns 6 to
10 calories per pound per day, while fat only burns around
2 calories per pound. Any calories not burned throughout
the day will be stored in the body as fat. For weight loss to
occur, you need to burn more calories than you take in each
day. That way your body is using the fat stores it already has
instead of creating new ones.
So if you’re looking to boost your metabolism and lose a
few pounds, physical activity (including weight training)
and diet are key to your success. It’s important to remember
that weight training is essential, and often overlooked by
women, to weight loss and maintaining a healthy body. So
instead of another session on the elliptical, pick up some
dumbbells and give those muscles a workout!

Are Your Hormones Out of Balance?
By Dr. Michael Morsillo, B.Sc., N.D.
Have you ever thought that you may have a hormonal
imbalance? Maybe there is a new symptom you have that can’t
be explained; or perhaps you feel your once boundless vitality
slowly slipping away, only to be explained by a shrug of the
shoulders and a simple “I guess that’s just part of aging”? I have
had many patients with long-standing health issues caused by
hormonal imbalances, which had never been identified.
Hormones are extremely important to our overall health and
are often described as our “messengers” because our body
uses hormones for communication. For example, if our cells
need to take in sugar from the blood stream, our pancreas will release insulin as a
way of communicating this message. This system is extremely intricate, involving
an enormous amount of hormones delivered between cells that are constantly
“talking” to each other. When a hormonal imbalance occurs, it can become a major
disruption for the body since it relies heavily on this communication system. Picture
what would happen if all of the phones in Ontario stopped working.
A hormonal imbalance can have an effect on any area of the body, so there are a
multitude of symptoms that can result. The following is only a small selection of
some of the more common hormonal imbalances.
Low progesterone is the most common hormone imbalance occurring in women.
There are many symptoms that can result from this, most commonly premenstrual
symptoms (PMS), unexplained weight
gain, poor sleep, anxiety, headaches,
menstrual changes, and infertility.
Low estrogen is another hormonal
imbalance often found in women,
especially menopausal women. Some
of the more frequent symptoms of this
imbalance will be hot flashes, night
sweats, mood changes, frequent bladder
infections, and memory problems.
One of the most common hormonal
deficiencies that goes largely unnoticed
involves cortisol. This is often termed
“adrenal fatigue” or “adrenal insufficiency”
because your adrenal glands are not
keeping up with the demands being
placed on them. This imbalance is
usually caused by chronic stress, which
is why everyone should have this tested
if they have not yet done so.
I would also like to mention thyroid
hormone imbalances since it
is so important to your overall
health. Although there are a large
number of people diagnosed with
“hypothyroidism”, I believe that there is
an even greater amount of people who
are suffering with “sub-optimal thyroid
function”. These people will
have many symptoms of low thyroid
function; however, test results will not
reflect this or will appear “normal”.
There are many symptoms that
can arise in this situation, the most
common of which are fatigue, weight
gain, constipation, memory issues or
“foggy-headed” feeling, coarse hair or
hair loss, and brittle nails.
If you have any symptoms that may be
related to changes in hormone levels
or if you have simply never had your
hormone levels checked, then now
would be a great time to do so. At our
Naturopathic clinic, we will use saliva
hormone testing to accurately detect
hormonal imbalances. We will then
formulate a natural treatment plan to
help bring these hormones back into
balance over time.
Dr. Michael Morsillo is a naturopathic
doctor who is passionate about helping
others achieve their optimal level of health.
Michael maintains a clinical practice in

Sushi or Thai?
And 8 other things
you're over-thinking
Alison Goldman,Women's Health
What percent of your day would you say you spend worrying? Regardless of your

issues are definitely worth fretting about—but there might also be instances in which you
waste way too much energy pondering problems you can't fix or questions that have
easy answers. We all do it. And lady, your time is more valuable than that!
Check out the list below for nine things you're definitely over-thinking:
1. Whether or not you should

Go for it! Because, fact:
Your hair will grow back.
2. Why your friend hasn't
liked your Instagram post
yet. It might be that she
hasn't signed on in the last
five min.
3. If your partner's parents
would like a bouquet of
tulips or hydrangeas better.
We think they'll appreciate
the gesture either way!
4. If anyone is noticing/
caring about your teeny zit.
Spoiler alert: They're not.
5. If you should go to the Thai
place or the Japanese place
for lunch. There will be
many more meals like this
one, we promise!
6. Whether you made a
mistake breaking up with
that guy you dumped six
months ago. Sometimes,
you've just got to own
whatever choice you
made—and move on.
7. If your boss took your
totally innocuous comment
the wrong way because
she seemed distracted
afterward. As one Disney
character would say, let it go.
8. Whether or not you should
go on a first date with the
person you're not sure
you're into. You'll either
have a nice time or get
some great party
story fodder—so
you can't lose!
9. If you should

The list of healthy fats include: olives & olive oil, coconuts and coconut oil,
avocados, almonds, pecans, palm oil, organic egg yokes and grass fed meats.
Huffington Post contributing writer & family physician, Dr. Mike Hart has
reported that eating foods with higher levels of zinc, such as shellfish, beef and
pork can also help increase testosterone. Our bodies use certain vitamins to
produce testosterone and these essential vitamins can increase testosterone
levels. Hart has also said that foods high in soy can increase estrogen &
therefore decrease testosterone. We come into contact with estrogen through
environmental pollution, water and certain foods which contain estrogenmimicking compounds.
As with all things consumed in our lives, do so
in moderation. If you & your doctor have agreed
you need to increase your testosterone then try
doing so naturally first. As mentioned previously,
change your diet, exercise more, reduce stress,
and sleep the recommended amount. Try
cooking with coconut oil. Drink out of BPAfree bottles or switch to glass ones. Exercise
regularly. Take doctor-recommended vitamins.
Eat more avocado, grapes, tuna, shellfish, grassfed meats, organic egg yokes, almonds and pecans. Try reducing the amount
of beer your consume to only on the weekends. All of these tips can help you
increase your testosterone. As always, talk to your doctor first.
Testosterone is, simply put,
a hormone. It is produced by
cholesterol. It is extremely important
to our bodies, especially males. Men
in particular require healthy levels of
testosterone in order to acquire that
healthy sex drive, combat erectile
disfunction, maintain active sperm.
When we hear the word ‘testosterone’
we immediately think of the
aforementioned topics. What some of
us may not realize is that testosterone
also helps build muscle & fight fat.
According to Men’s Health Magazine,
testosterone also helps reduce the
risk of developing cancer and type 2
diabetes. The magazine also reported
a shocking statistic - 5% of all men
suffer from low testosterone and of
those men, 20% are under 30 years
of age. Needless to say, testosterone
is one of those unsung heroes of the
human body.
It has been reported by Dr. Mercola
that at age 30 a man’s testosterone
levels begin to drop. This can be
caused by the intake of statin drugs,
an increase of estrogen levels,
unhealthy eating habits & a lack of
exercise. Many people would rather
avoid taking medication to combat
such problems and instead rely on
natural methods. Believe it or not,
there are ways to increase testosterone
the natural way by eating certain
foods & making certain life changes.
Dr. Mercola reports reducing sugar
from your diet, eliminating stress,
sleeping 8 hours per night and eating
healthy fats will get you on the right
track to increasing testosterone in
your body.

BODY HEALTH
By Danielle Warner DC
The other day I woke up on the wrong
side of the bed. I was late getting the kids
off to daycare, the house was a complete
disaster and I completely forgot about an
early morning meeting I had committed
to. I could not shake my irritation all
morning long. I even started to bring up
in my mind old irritations and grudges
I thought I had let go of. The last thing I
wanted to do was exercise. I did it anyway.
A quick run followed by a yoga class. At the end of the class I
was struck by how great I felt and I knew that the rest of my
day was going to be much better.
The body needs to move to feel good. Movement allows the
sensory system to interact with the external environment
which sends feedback to the central nervous system to
regulate, coordinate and optimize bodily functions. When
parts of our body stop moving the feedback that the
nervous system is receiving is compromised. In short, the
more parts of the body moving, the better. Also, when we
exercise endorphins (happy hormones) are released into
the bloodstream which helps with tissue repair and that
wonderful feeling of well-being.
The same is true for newborns. The rapidly developing
nervous system of a newborn is subject to a myriad of
stressors that can impact how the nerves get organized into
functional units. These stressors can include the emotional
state of the mother before the baby is born, labour and
delivery, chemical stress from medication, and sensory
stress from under or over stimulation, Even the efforts of
holding the head up can create significant changes in tone
and function of the neck that have an impact on how the
brain develops. These stressors can impact and restrict
spinal motion which has an effect on the nervous systems
ability to self-regulate. This can look like a fussy or irritable
baby, constipation, reflux, colic, anxiety, and tantrum
among other common childhood ailments.
As a chiropractor, part of my goal is to get the body moving.
By improving how the nervous system is working at the
spinal level, you can impact how effectively the central
nervous system controls and regulates the rest of the body....
at any age. Optimizing the tone of the central nervous
system at the spinal level also releases those wonderful
hormones that make us feel so good when we exercise.
We live in a fast paced world and we are very busy, but
most of us don't move enough. Think about it. Consider
finding activities that get your heart rate up and, if you are
not already, consider getting adjusted... and remember...
children have a nervous system too.

FAMILY HEALTH
Is Your Furniture Safe
For Your Children?
Environmental Working Group
In the first study to investigate children’s exposure to six fire
retardant chemicals, scientists from EWG and Duke University
have found evidence of exposure to a cancer-causing fire
retardant, TDCIPP, in the bodies of all 22 mothers and 26
children tested. The children had an average of nearly five
times as much as the mothers of a chemical formed when
TDCIPP breaks down in the body. In the most extreme
case, a child had 23 times the level measured in the mother.
Because fire retardants are in many consumer products such
as furniture cushions and are nearly impossible to avoid
completely, we put together this list of tips to help you and
your family limit your exposure:
Do your homework before buying baby products. Many
kinds of baby products have been exempted from regulations
that prompted companies to add fire retardants. But some
manufacturers still use these chemicals. Find out before you
buy and choose products that don’t contain any fire retardants.
When buying a new couch, choose one made without fire
retardants. New regulations make it much easier for furniture
manufacturers to sell products that have not been saturated
with chemical fire retardants. There is no easy way to tell
which is which. Contact the manufacturer to ask if these
chemicals are in its furniture.Want to reupholster your couch?
Replace the foam too. If you are planning to reupholster your
30 I
Living Well Naturally with Nature’s Emporium
I
fall issue 2014
couch, consider replacing the foam at the same time. The
old foam likely contains fire retardants. Ask your upholstery
shop to find retardant-free polyurethane foam. Inspect foam
cushioning for damage. Make sure cushion covers are intact,
since exposed foam can cause fire retardant chemicals to
leach out more quickly. Items like car seats and mattress pads
should always be completely encased in protective fabric. Use
a vacuum fitted with a HEPA filter. These vacuums are more
efficient at trapping small particles and will likely remove
more contaminants and allergens from your home. High
efficiency "HEPA-filter" air cleaners may reduce particle-bound
contaminants in your house. Be careful when removing old
carpeting. The padding is typically made of scrap foam that
contains fire retardants. Old carpet padding can become
somewhat pulverized by the time it is exposed for replacement.
Isolate the work area from the rest of your home. Even though
progress is being made, the results of the EWG-Duke study are
extremely troubling. That’s why EWG is working hard to create
a future in which North American families are not exposed to
harmful fire retardants every day.
By Patricia and Carolyn, the "Quinoa Sisters "
We are passionate about quinoa! Why Eat Quinoa?
What makes quinoa a superior food choice? What was once
considered an alternative crop or a niche food, quinoa is now
becoming increasingly common in North America.
High Protein, Maximum Nutrition… Quinoa has more recently
garnered interest from the health-conscious crowd looking for
maximum nutrition and those on high protein diets, seeking
weight loss or those just wanting to eat better quality foods.
Quinoa can promote weight loss, building muscle, alleviate
migraine headaches, help diabetes, promote cardiovascular
health and prevent hardening of the arteries. It has also been
linked to helping prevent breast cancer, childhood asthma,
gallstones and acts as a super antioxidant.
Balanced and Unique… A balanced protein, quinoa has
a complete combination of all life supporting nutrients,
containing all eight essential amino acids. This balance makes it
highly digestible and completely unique in the plant kingdom.
Vitamin Rich… Not only high in protein, quinoa is high in
fiber, and vitamins such as riboflavin, calcium, vitamin E,
iron, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, folic acid and beta
carotene. It is also abundant in linoleic acid, the essential fatty
acid that has proven to benefit the immune response.
Great for babies and children… Quinoa is high in histadine, the
amino acid that is essential to human growth and development.
No GMO… Quinoa is nutritionally complex and not genetically
modified! Great for detox… Prebiotic nutrients in quinoa help
feed the probiotic (good) bacteria in your intestine!
Gluten-Free… Quinoa is familiar to vegetarians as a protein
source and to many whom are gluten-intolerant because it is
completely gluten-free.
Intriguing & Unusual… the wow-factor of quinoa has
encouraged cooks at all skill levels to use it to create unique
dishes for themselves, their families and intrigued dinner
party guests.
Prepare quinoa as you would prepare rice.Cover it with water
or vegetable broth and boil until soft, about 15 minutes. Or,
place 1 part quinoa to 2 parts water in your rice cooker. Did
you know quinoa also makes a great hot breakfast cereal,
similar to oatmeal?
1/3 cup of cooked quinoa has 160 calories, 2.5 grams of fat, 3
grams of fiber and 6 grams of protein .

Homeopathy & Vaccination
consciousness. My purpose for writing this article is very
simple, it is only to make you aware of a body of research
about disease prevention that you probably know nothing
about. In every media report about the vaccine question not
once has this body of research been referenced. This research
should provide an exciting platform for further study by
medical professionals but unfortunately it does not.
Recently there has been a resurgence
of the vaccine debate. The media
has its own proclivity to present any
alternative method as unproven, or
unscientific. It came to the attention of
a colleague of mine who was recently
visited under false pretenses by an
“investigative journalist” from CBC
Marketplace. He was later contacted
with a request for an interview to
explain his position on vaccination and the homeopathic
perspective. This subterfuge was completely unnecessary
because most of the information supporting the homeopathic
method is readily available. These are real studies done
on a large scale by qualified researchers. My colleague
declined to be interviewed based upon the grounds that this
correspondent had a preconceived bias and CBC's history
of incredibly unobjective, poorly researched pieces where
it concerns homeopathy. The most recent article I read was
in TorontoLife entitled, “The Vaccine Truthers: why parents
shun life-saving shots”, August 27, 2014. The title already tells
you where this article is going.
The use of homoeopathics in the treatment and prevention
of infectious diseases has a very long history. During the 19th
century, homeopathy in North America and Europe became
very popular for impressive results treating epidemics of
influenza, cholera, typhoid, yellow fever, malaria, measles,
mumps, diphtheria, etc... In fact many of the successes of
homeopathy in treating and preventing the spread of local
epidemics is well sited in historical public health records and
the homeopathic literature. This evidence has been compiled
since 2005 and is almost ready for print (with 1,700 pages
and over 1,600 references) entitled, "The Weight of Evidence:
Homeopathy in Times of Epidemic and Related Statistics",
by Dr. André Saine, D.C., N.D., F.C.A.H. Here is a quote from
Dr. Saine about his research: “In reviewing this literature, it
is truly astonishing to find, as many reviewers have noted
before, that there exists not one single report showing
the superiority of conventional medicine over genuine
homeopathy in lowering morbidity and mortality during
epidemics. This amazing fact holds true in every era, even
including results obtained by allopathic doctors using today’s
advances in medicine and nursing.”
By Nicholas Mazzoli DSHomMed, RCSHom
When it comes to health, nutrition, medicine, etc... we are full
of beliefs that are based more upon what we have been told
than objective facts or what collective experience teaches.
The media plays an integral role in this aspect of social

When people smile with genuine
engagement and warmth, the eye
muscles are involved and the smile
extends over the whole face. In
contrast, a smile that is not genuine
but manufactured does not engage
the eye muscles and involves only the
lower half of the face. We often can tell
whether people are tired or not feeling
well because the eyes will appear dull
or lack the usual sparkle when people are not the best of health.
The eyes are not only a window to our souls; the eyes are a map
to our bodies.
What is IRIDOLOGY?
Iridology or iris diagnosis is a method used in alternative
medicine to analyse the health status by studying colours,
marks and signs in the iris, pupil, and sclera of the eyes.
Iridology is based on the scientific study of the iris -- the
coloured part of the eye. Like markings on a map, the iris
reveals physiological conditions, psychological health risks,
challenges and/or strengths of various organs.Through
iridology, iridologists can get an understanding of your past,
present, and potential future health conditions by assessing
the various body systems. The Science of Iridology is based on
the analysis of one of the most complicated tissue structures of
the whole body-the iris. Iridology offers a unique perspective to
the concept and practice of preventive health care. It involves
a non-invasive diagnostic procedure, commonly used by the
European practitioners.
CONTINUED ON P.34
History of iridology:
Iridology dates back hundreds of years, but the first iris
map developed was in the early 1800’s by a doctor named
Ignatz von Pezcely in Hungary. He is known as the father of
iridology. Since then, many scientist, doctors and health care
professionals around the world have studied iridology in order
to help people better.
How an iridologist can help you:
Iridologists are in great demand
all over the world as patients
are increasingly searching for
alternative ways to find the cause
of their health problems. Modern
medicine unfortunately has its
limitations and many diagnostic
techniques such as blood tests and x-rays are often
painful, invasive, and have risk factors. An iridology
examination is an absolutely safe, non-invasive, painless,
and reliable method of obtaining information about the
health status of an individual. It is also one of the few
methods used to view all the organs and systems as a whole
and their interaction with one another. In recent years
Iridology and natural medicine have shown unbelievable
growth as well as in combination with other natural healing
methods such as nutrition, herbal medicine, vitamin and
minerals supplements which is providing
an effective solution to the growing

Homeopathy & Vaccination
In Brazil two major studies
in 1974 and 1998 were
conducted by two professors of medicine from the University
Foundation in Blumenau Brazil, and a Blumenau specialist
physician in cooperation with the city health department. The
protection rates in the studies showed a 91%-95% protection
rate against Meningococcal disease. In Cuba in 2007 and 2008
two large scale trials showed the successful use of homeopathic
prophylaxis in the prevention of Leptospirosis. [Bracho, G.,
Varela, E., Fernandez, R., et al. “Large-scale application of
highly diluted bacteria for Leptospirosis epidemic control.”
Homeopathy. 99 (2010): 156-166)].

In Rio de Janiero in 2008, a study evaluated homeopathic
prophylaxis against Dengue fever. The incidence of disease in
the first three months of 2008 fell by 93% in comparison to the
corresponding period of 2007, whereas in the rest of the State
of Rio de Janeiro there was an increase of 128%. [Contribution

In Andorran Pradesh province, India, a large scale
homeopathic prophylaxis program was implemented from
1999 - 2003 to help prevent the spread of Japanese encephalitis
which is endemic in parts of India. In 1999 cases had risen
to 1,036, with 203 deaths, mostly in children. The program
targeted children 14yrs old and under. By 2003 the notification
of deaths in the province had dropped to zero, while in other
regions of India the disease incidence remained high where
homeopathy had not been used. There are several more
studies of this kind waiting to be translated into english
from other parts of the world. Dr. Isaac Golden (an Australian
Homeopath) is widely recognized as a modern authority on
homeopathic prophylaxis. He has a 20 year ongoing clinical
study evaluating the use of homeopathy to prevent disease.
Here is a quote summarizing the results of his study as of 2004,
“using responses from parents whose children used my 5 year
homoeoprophylactic (HP) program for disease prevention
from 1985 to 2004. 2,342 responses were collected, each one
covering one year of a child's life. The effectiveness and safety
of the homoeopathic option to vaccination is fully discussed,
and the actual comments by parents are reported. The single
figure measure of effectiveness is 90.4% (95% confidence
limits 87.6% - 93.2%). Using national attack rates as a control
HP efficacy for three diseases was whooping cough – 86.2%;
measles – 90.0%; mumps – 91.6%.”. If you wish to read further

way, but you need to be aware that there is an alternative
with a long history and good science to prove its validity. I
encourage everyone to approach this subject with objectivity
and rational thought. Further good quality unbiased research
is still required on both sides of this issue. There are many
good publications and online information that may help you
make a decision that is right for you and your family. If you
would like more information please contact me.
