The photos for this catalogue were
taken in Swanage, a pretty seaside
resort home to both an RNLI lifeboat
station and an RNLI shop. And just
30 minutes down the road from the
RNLI Headquarters in Poole.
Swanage has one of the busiest
lifeboat stations in the UK, with
thousands of visitors each year
and was established in 1875
at the request of local
residents. The boathouse
and slipway were built at
a cost of £350 and £175 and,
although much has been
altered, they are still in use
today. The station currently
has two lifeboats, a Mersey class all-weather
lifeboat and a D class inshore lifeboat.
The RNLI shop is located on Swanage High Street, just 5 minutes
from the station, and sells a variety of souvenirs, clothing and
gifts. The shop is run solely by dedicated volunteers and 100%
of profits go directly to saving lives at sea.
Swanage is also home to many other attractions from the
heritage steam railway to two historic castles! Or you can
simply walk along Swanage Pier and take in the sights.

Silver Medal Story
The RNLI lifeguards now patrol over 150 of the UK’s busiest
beaches and assisted over 15,000 people in 2009.
Lifeguards Chris Boundy and John Dugard were awarded
Silver Medals for Gallantry in May 2009, for saving a man’s
life the previous summer. Chris relives the dramatic rescue:
“It was high tide on the afternoon of 28 June 2008 and I had
just come on duty at Trebarwith Strand, north Cornwall.
The surf was rough and we were flying the red flag, closing
the beach to swimmers. I chatted with a couple of anglers,
explaining where it would be safe to go. A few minutes later,
I heard screaming.
“The ‘washing machine’ is one place you don’t go. The waves
converge from all directions to create a swirl that drags you
under. But there was one of the men I had spoken to just
moments before, lying submerged, face down. I yelled to my
colleague, John, to call for back up.
“Now John was in the water with us and I managed to get free.
The man was grey and apparently stone dead but somehow
we managed to give him one good rescue breath. Then the
right waves came to help wash us all onto the rocks. With the
man’s leg still submerged, I started mouth-to-nose, while John
rushed to get the defibrillator. An ambulance was on its way
but its estimated time of arrival was 37 minutes. The man
needed to be fully out of the water to start defibrillation, but
all that water in his clothing made him incredibly heavy.
“As we set up the defibrillator, we felt a pulse. It was such
a relief when the paramedics arrived ten minutes early,
followed closely by a rescue helicopter.
“I had three sleepless nights until, with a wave of relief, I met
the man and his family again. He remembered me from our
chat. He joked it was the last time he was going fishing and
gave me what was left of his rod as a gesture of thanks. That
evening I slept.”

Kinghorn Rescue

On the afternoon of 29 July 2010, the volunteer crew of
Kinghorn RNLI Lifeboat saved the life of a young boy at sea.
Events began at 2:40pm when beach lifeguards at Leven beach
reported two drifting dinghies off the Fife coast with three
children aboard. Forth Coastguard immediately requested the
launch of Kinghorn Lifeboat which arrived on scene at 3:06pm.
When the lifeboat reached the scene the crew found an
empty dinghy drifting half a mile offshore. The situation was
desperate; two of the children had made it safely to shore but
one was still missing. The RNLI crew members carried out a
search of the area and eventually found the casualty a quarter
of a mile offshore.
The boy was 11 years old and dressed in only shorts and a
t-shirt. He was immediately recovered to the lifeboat and
given first aid whilst the lifeboat returned him to a waiting
ambulance as he was understood to be suffering from
hypothermia.
Crewmember Brian Paton said, “It was a shock to find the
empty dinghy so far off shore, as we knew there was still one
occupant who had not made it to safety. When we found the
lad he was very distressed and suffering from the onset of
hypothermia. Minutes later and this shout would have had
much more serious consequences.”

Where your
money goes
The RNLI receives no UK Government funding but we have
hundreds of lifeboats to keep running. We support, equip and
train thousands of volunteer crew members; and we cover
over 19,000 miles of coastline on public donations, and the
profits raised by our catalogue.
Last year was our busiest ever, but our funds are not keeping
pace with the growing demand on our service. That’s why
we’re so grateful for every penny you spend – and why we
thought you might like to know a bit more about where your
money goes.
We spend your money where it’s needed most
It costs over £100 million a year just to keep the lifeboat
service running, but since we’re here for the long term, we are
also busy investing a significant proportion of our income in:
• New lifeboat stations that are better equipped to carry
out modern-day rescues – replacing some that have
been around for more than a hundred years
• New lifeboats – designed to stand up to the harshest
sea conditions
• Crucial training for every single volunteer crew member
to keep them – and all those we rescue – safe at sea
Kit list
As well as lifeboats and lifeboat stations, every volunteer crew
member relies on having the right kit to go to sea in the most
hazardous conditions. Money raised from the gifts you buy
can go directly towards these essentials:
• £16 buys a pair of seagoing gloves which keep crews’ hands
warm yet are sensitive enough to fine tune a radio
• £42 buys a pair of sea boots to help keep crew members
sure-footed at sea
• £55 buys a personal flare so crew members can alert
colleagues if they go overboard
• £166 buys a safety helmet to protect crew members’
heads from the worst a cruel sea can throw at them
• £494 buys an all-weather lifejacket to protect a crew
member in the toughest conditions
