Make This Girl Scout Year Your Best Yet.
GSNorCal’s Volunteer Learning Portal is designed to support your experience. With the guidance and support of
a volunteer, girls can go as far as their imaginations will take them—and you can be there, right by their side. In fact,
95% of volunteers say they make girls’ lives better at Girl Scouts (and that makes them happy).
We know your time is valuable, which is why the majority of our learning courses are available
online and accessible 24/7. It gives you the information you need just when you need it! Most
of the online courses are fewer than 10 minutes long. You can learn at a time and pace that
is convenient for you, resume where you left off, and your progress will be tracked for
your records. Get started by accessing our Volunteer Learning Portal at training.
girlscoutsnorcal.org.
You also will find support for your troop with the volunteer toolkit app. Its best features
include management of troop communication and girl membership. We think it’s a great
way for brand new leaders and leaders of new age levels to launch into a Journey and
the legacy badges. This tool will be especially helpful to Daisy leaders who are just starting
out! The Toolkit is available through the MY GS link in the upper right corner of our website,
GSNorCal.org.

Your guide
to Girl Scout
adventures!
Welcome to the Guide—
experiences for girls,
adults, and families!
Girls, leaders and families, we know you’re ready for
fun, friends, new adventures and maybe a badge or
two! With the Guide, you can choose adventures to do as
a group, a family; or a girl and her favorite adult can have
their own unique experience. Fly down the zip line, make a
S’more, pitch a tent, create an awesome robot, spend time at
a maker studio, start your own business, or have a slumber
party in a mall. Whatever the scenario, make new friends or
bring old ones to join the adventure. Let’s get started!
Leaders, parents, and guardians, this guide is for you too!
Not only can you pick out exciting adventures with the girls;
but it’s also full of information, resources, and experiences
that are designed to enhance the Girl Scout program for
you, too. Over the past year, we’ve heard from families that
time is short, so it would be ideal if GSNorCal offered events
and experiences for the whole family. In response, we have
increased family events, adult experiences, and side-by-side
opportunities for girls and their favorite adult.
The Guide provides Girl Scout programming across 19
counties from October 2016–September 2017. The online
searchable calendar at www.GSNorCal.org/events is the
best way to keep on top of the opportunities. New programs
will be introduced throughout the year, so keep an eye out for
them by subscribing to our weekly newsletter at
www.GSNorCal.org, and adding us to your Facebook, Twitter,
or Instagram feeds.
2 • The Guide 2016-2017
Girl Scouts is the premier organization for girls in the
world and provides quality experiences for girls and their
families. The program sets a rock-solid foundation for girls
to navigate relationships and school, discover themselves,
and develop the skills they need for the future.
In that spirit, The Girl Scout Programs support K-12 girls
in building strong life-skills so they can:
How to Use The Guide
1. Let girls tour The Guide! Help them find the experiences
that are just right for them!
(download at www.GSNorCal.org/events)
2. Share The Guide with parents and guardians!
3. Make plans with the girls to participate in the Fall and
Cookie sales. Doing so will help them work toward paying
for the experiences themselves. Along the way, they will
learn about money management and goal setting.
4. Attend events with their troop, a buddy,
on their own, or with a parent or guardian.
(Please note that, unless otherwise indicated, an adult
chaperone must attend.)
5. Register for events at www.GSNorCal.org/events.
Throughout The Guide and throughout the year, you will see
Girl Scouts of Northern California’s expertise on display.
We are leaders in creating adventure and leadership
experiences layered across many topics that are appealing
and help girls and families achieve their goals. For example
science, technology, engineering and math learning
continues to be a key way to develop strong critical thinking
skills while the Cookie and Fall sales help girls hone their
entrepreneurial abilities.

require a chaperone, but you can expect your
role to be just that—chaperone.

Refund/Cancellation Policy
• Minimum and maximum attendance requirements exist for
all programs. Girl Scouts of Northern California reserves the
right to cancel or change any scheduled activities due to
lack of enrollment, severe weather, or natural disaster.
• Cancellation and refund requests must be made in writing
thirty (30) days before the event in order to receive 50% of
registration fees of $10 or more per individual.
• No refunds will be issued for no-shows.

Special Needs
Because we are all unique, sometimes we may have special
needs that must be met in order to attend an event. Please
e-mail [email protected] if you have
questions about what we can accommodate. For events
that include food, it is the parent/guardian’s responsibility
to let us know about dietary restrictions. We are usually

Girl Scouting
Made Easy
The Program
The Girl Scout program is designed to help girls build the skills
they need to thrive today and be ready for tomorrow. They
do so through engaging, hands-on activities that foster an
environment for girls to build lasting friendships and have fun.
Below are the benefits and desired outcomes girls can expect
to get out of the program.
Girls will:
• build a strong sense of themselves and have confidence
in their abilities, forming positive identities.
• act ethically, honestly, and responsibly, and show
concern for others, deepening positive values.
• seek challenges and take appropriate risks, trying things
even if they might fail, and learning from mistakes.
• develop and maintain healthy relationships by
communicating their feelings directly and resolving
conflicts constructively.
• want to contribute to the world in purposeful and
meaningful ways, learn how to identify problems in the
community, and create “action plans” to solve them.
These outcomes are achieved through the collaborative work
of girls and supportive adults. The well-researched processes
used by Girl Scouts help prepare girls to lead projects, work
cooperatively with teams, and use processes of reflection to
learn from one another and solve complex challenges.
The tools used to support the desired outcomes for girls
are badges, activities and experiences, fall and cookie sales,
Journeys and leadership opportunities, outdoors and adventure
and trips and travel.
Badges
Learn something entirely new or learn something a little bit
better through Girl Scout badges, such as practical life skills
that are essential and not available at school.
Activities & Experiences
Girl Scouts of Northern California offers a wide range of
experiences covering science, technology, engineering and
math, art, outdoor skills, healthy relationships, entrepreneurship
and more.
This guide is great resource. Sit down with girls and select
experiences that will support their interests and goals and
allow them to have fun. There are also activities for families;
and parents/guardians will have an interest in some of our
side-by-side opportunities with their favorite girl.
Girl Scouting Made Easy • 5
Fall Sale and Cookies
Girl experiences are powered by Nuts and Cookies!
The Girl Scout Fall and Cookie Sales are the largest
entrepreneurship program in the country. With the Five Key
Skills—goal setting, decision making, money management,
people skills, and ethics—girls build confidence and business
skills. From Daisies to Ambassadors, girls use these programs
to fundraise for service projects and cover fees for programs
and camps.
Journeys
We know girls want to make a difference in the world! When
girls do a Journey, they team up with their friends to find
a solution to a problem and make it into a plan. While having
fun, they are building those much needed skills for 21st
century engagement.
Leadership Opportunities
Every girl needs skills to lead her own life. Journeys and other
unique Girl Scout experiences offer girls the opportunity to
take initiative and lead. The skills that girls learn in Girl Scouts
will equip them with the confidence to forge their own path
and take charge of their future. Learn more about Girl Scouts
Highest Awards on page 34.
Outdoors and Adventure
GSNorCal has more adventure partners than any other council
in the US. This means more places to try new activities like
kayaking, white water rafting, ropes courses, skiing, and ice
skating. To learn more about high adventure activities—and
specific troops where girls are passionate about specific
experiences plan and do lots of them—visit www.GSNorCal.
org and explore “Get Outdoors” and “Interest Groups”.
Trips and Travel
Girls want to see and experience new things, which is why
troop travel and high adventure programs are designed to
allow them to stretch their limits, explore their boundaries,
make new friends, and learn new skills in a supportive
environment. The Girl Scout product sale programs are the
leading business and financial literacy program for girls in the
nation. Participating in the them to earn the necessary funds
can make travel dreams come true.
destinations
Girl Scout destinations are the ultimate adventure for
individual girls ages 11 and older! Different experiences are
offered each year and there is something life-changing for
everyone. Perhaps you can see yourself catching waves in
Puerto Rico, heading to the beach in San Diego, or exploring
outer space (at Space Camp, but you get the idea).
The Girls
The Girl Scout experience has the most impact when it is
largely designed by the girls. Girls are more engaged when
they get to lead and make choices! Troop leaders and parents
should support girls in planning their year.
6 • The Guide 2016-2017
The Adults
The adult experience in Girl Scouts, whether you are a parent,
guardian or volunteer, is as a mentor, project manager, and
coach. Supportive adults are key to helping girls to take
on challenges, build skills and increase their abilities, and
begin to develop their inner passion. This looks different at
each age. At younger levels adults will play a bigger role in
setting up and facilitating activities, while still allowing girls
the opportunity to be curious. As girls enter middle school
(Cadettes), the adult experience changes to become more
of guide and mentor. Allowing girls to make mistakes, find
solutions, and seek help is part of the plan!
Adult Troop Support
Parents and guardians can do a lot to add
to the health of a troop:
• Register as a “friends and family” member.
• Support girls in their activities, projects
and troop duties.
• When possible, support leader(s) during
meetings/activities.
• Support the troop in the Fall and/or
Cookie Sale Programs.
• Help the volunteers establish and maintain
a positive environment for girls.
• Stay informed, sign up for e-news at
www.GirlScoutsNorCal.org/connect-enews
The Troop
It is through the troop experience, supported by adults, that
the Girl Scout Program Experience comes to life, letting girls
lead the way on what and how they learn. Supporting this
environment for girls is easier than you think! Here are five
simple steps for planning and making sure girls, at any
age, take the lead:
1. Help girls identify their goal(s) for the year. Do they
want to do a Journey? Earn a particular badge? Sell 5,000
boxes of cookies? Go camping? Go on a trip?
2. Help girls determine if the goal is meaningful
and realistic. For example, completing 3 Journeys and
working on the Silver Award in a year is a bit much. Help
the girls spread out their plans over their 3 year Cadette
experience, or pare down their ideas so that they can
focus and get the most out of the things they do!
3. Help girls design the path to the goal. How frequently
will you meet? Do they want to attend events as well
as meet? If so, which events will help achieve the goal?
Which ones will be just for fun? Are there other trips,
materials or resources needed to help reach this goal or
round out the troop experience? What are their goals for
the fall sale and cookie sale to help finance this path?
4. Evaluate the plan with girls and families. Can they do
it within budget? Does it present a new challenge for the
girls? Does the troop have enough time to accomplish
the goals? What can families do to help in supporting the
girls?
5. Help girls put the plan into place. Have regular checkins with the girls about where they are in the plan. Are
they on a successful path? Should they shift gears and try
to reach the end goal a different way? How can the path
be adjusted?
The Experience
Once girls have identified where they want to go, it’s time
to start getting your tools and planning the meetings. Girl
Scout participation, most often, follows the school year and
should be a compliment to school courses. National and local
tools, in combination provide a supportive and unique singlegendered experience outside the classroom.

The Community
Each area within GSNorCal’s 19 counties belongs to a Service
Unit. Service Units hold meetings for troop leaders on a
regular basis. These meetings offer troop leaders a great place
to network and learn about what’s new and access to fun
opportunities for your girls! To find out information about your
local service unit, please email [email protected].
The Resources
Girl Scouts of Northern California has many resources to
help girls, their leader, and families get the most out of their
Girl Scout experience. From the website, to Troop Leader to
neighborhood Girl Scout Leadership, to council staff, finding
support is a snap. Please visit www.GirlScoutsNorCal.
org/for-volunteers for more information or email info@
GirlScoutsNorCal.org.
Volunteer Toolkit
The Volunteer Toolkit is a troop/group management
system. It helps leaders with the routine tasks of renewing
memberships, adding new members as well as accessing
the Journey and badge materials. Once the troop/group has
selected a Journey or badge, you can auto-plan meetings
with selected content, and access resources and meeting
aids. It makes planning easy and allows you to spend more
time building your confidence to support girls at every stage.
The toolkit is available to Troop Leaders upon the completion
of member registration/renewal.

Dad 2.0 Retooling Dad-Daughter
Relationships as Little Girls Grow Up
Girls need a strong bond with Dad, but as girls approach
puberty, dads may back away. In this special workshop for
caring men raising girls, author/educator Annie Fox helps you
stay connected to your daughter by understanding: her female
perspective, the social pressure she feels to be “perfect” and
“popular”, how to talk to her during an emotional time, and
what she needs from you that mom can’t provide. You’ll also
learn how to help her set relationship standards for the men in
her life.
Please Note: Registration includes autographed copy of Annie
Fox’s book, Teaching Kids To Be Good People and free child care
for one child. Additional kids are $10 each.
Discoveree

Fall Festival
Get outdoors and be a girl again at this adult only Circle of
Friendship retreat! Experience crafts, games, songs, and new
skills alongside your sister Girl Scouts that will wow you and
your girls when you get back home. Certifications in troop
camping, first aid, and extended travel are offered and the Girl
Scout Shop will be on site. Come for the day and experience
the workshops or spend the night and get so much more as
you join your circle of friends around the campfire!
Girl Scout Strong
Adults, build your team from your friends and colleagues in
your troop or Service Unit to support girls. Will your team come
together with leadership and teamwork and take the winning
place in this event? Challenges will consist of mental, physical
(but not too hard) tasks, a little luck, and some outlandish fun.
Meet the Mentors
32 • The Guide 2016-2017
Meet your peers who are experts in running events in their
Service Units. Hear about the exciting events happening around
the council and have an opportunity to pair up with a mentor to
shadow their event or run one in your own Service Unit. Learn
tips to run events smoothly and with little stress. We will have
some yummy snacks and find out—how did they do that?
Power Troop
Troop Camping Certification
Building a Power Troop takes vision, skill, and a little bit of grit.
Many troop leaders want a troop that can make decisions,
set goals, go places, earn awards, and do amazing things. The
great secret is that girls want all that too! Power Troop is the
key to being a Power Leader and helping your girls get every
last ounce of experience out of their Girl Scout years.
Is your troop interested in cooking or sleeping outdoors?
Then this class is for you. The Troop Camping Certification
course is required of at least one adult before taking your
troop camping. It will provide you with information on how
to teach camping skills to the girls, plan, and prepare them
for their outdoor experiences. Being outside is a great way to
explore leadership, build skills, and give girls an opportunity
to have fun in a whole new environment.
Teaching Our Daughters
Relationship Smarts
Girls’ friendships are training grounds for adult relationships.
Part of our job is to help our girls speak up for themselves
with confidence. In this special parenting workshop, author/
educator Annie Fox provides practical tools to help you help
your daughter: set healthy boundaries and high friendship
standards, resolve conflicts with integrity, exit unhealthy
relationships, and debrief after a “break up”. You’ll also learn
how to stay at the core of your daughter’s support network.
Please Note: Registration includes autographed copy of
Annie Fox’s book, Teaching Kids To Be Good People and free
child care for one child. Additional kids are $10 each.
Volunteer Recognition
Come join us as we honor our extraordinary adult volunteers
who do so much for Girl Scouts! Local and National awards

Girls are Go-Getters,
Innovators, Risk-takers,
and Leaders!
The Girl Scout Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards are amazing
opportunities for girls to put their ideas to work. Not only do they
hone their skills while working on Girl Scouts highest honors, the
awards experiences open doors to internships, partnerships,
schools and more. The possibilities are endless. See what other
girls have already done . . .
Bronze Award (4th–5th grade)
Big Problem: Congested, car-filled school drop off
Big Idea: Fewer cars, more exercise
Through a girl-crafted campaign that included t-shirts, posters, stickers, banners,
promotion kits, and a catchy jingle, Junior Girl Scouts took action to encourage
exercise and reduce carbon footprints at their school.
During the Walk and Roll project the girls worked together to educate students and
parents to walk and roll to school every Wednesday. They were able to get students
out of cars and into taking care of themselves and the environment.
Big Results: A healthier school, reduced carbon footprint,
and developed marketing skills!
Silver Award (6th–8th grade)
Big Problem: Chopped trees and reduced habitat
Big Idea: Preserve the Trees
Cadette girls took action to reduce the removal of natural habitat and native oak trees
due to land development. By rallying members of the community and working with
City Hall, they reduced the scope of the project and saved 71% of the land originally
slated for development. The locations of the new homes, sidewalks and streets were
adjusted to preserve and plant new native oak trees.
Big Results: Saved trees and local habitats, and learned about civic engagement!
Gold Award (9th–12th grade)
Big Problem: Injured athletes
Big Idea: Educate teens on body care
Teen sports injuries can limit, and even end, future participation in athletics. A Senior
Girl Scout took action to reduce the high occurrence of injuries by creating hands-on
workshops for teens to help them learn about sports injuries and prevention. During
her project she built a network of professionals that helped her gather and present
information on injuries and prevention in soccer, in a teen friendly way. Through her
website and non-profit organization, her workshops continue to support teens and
families with information and activities on supporting the health of young athletes.
Big Results: Safer and Informed athletes and families, and developed
business skills!

Outdoor Progression
Progression allows girls to learn the skills they need to
become competent in the outdoors, including how to
plan and organize outdoor activities. Acknowledge a girl’s
mastery of an outdoor skill and invite her to challenge
herself further by taking that next step up and out.
Outdoor fun can be endless when girls lead!
