Detecting breast cancer at the
earliest, and most survivable, stage
An alarming 44% of women in our community over the
age of 50 have not received a mammogram in the last
two years. Your generosity is changing that.
The Foundation has expanded our free mammogram
program to reduce financial, cultural and language
barriers and get more women screened—women just
like Angelina.
Angelina Bezu
With no health insurance or resources, 58 year-old
Angelina Bezu had not had a mammogram in years.
She understood the importance as her sister had
died of breast cancer. When she learned of the Jan
Erickson Life Saver Fund, she quickly applied for a free
mammogram. She is so glad she did.
The screening revealed an early stage of breast cancer.
Angelina is now in remission. Without Foundation
assistance, her breast cancer would not have been
discovered at such an early, and survivable, stage.
Providing comprehensive
rehabilitation for cancer survivors
Providence St. Mary Regional Cancer Center became
the first facility in Washington State to earn certification
in STAR (Survivorship Training and Rehabilitation), a
program that brings together a team of specialists
from rehabilitation and other services to help survivors
increase strength and energy, alleviate pain and
improve their ability to do day-to-day functions.
This program was launched entirely by donations to
Providence St. Mary Foundation.

The best care possible
for mom and baby
Donations in support of the
Family Birth Center allow each new
baby to leave the hospital with a
SleepSack, a wearable blanket that
replaces loose blankets in a baby’s
crib to encourage safe sleeping
practices at home.
Earlier this year, an investment
from the Foundation launched a breast milk collection site in the Lactation Clinic. Once collected,
the milk is shipped to Portland for sterilization and is then available for medically fragile infants.
The Depot was opened in response to a grassroots effort by women in the community who had
learned that the medical need for human milk is greater than the available supply.
A new addition for the
Special Care Nursery
The Special Care Nursery recently
welcomed a new addition—
a Panda Warmer for the Family
Birth Center.
The warmer is used immediately
after birth to provide radiant heat
to newborns. The unit also has
integrated oxygen and systems that
allow staff to access everything
needed to deliver resuscitation therapy to high-risk newborns in an emergency.
The new equipment will join two other warmers to ensure every newborn has access to this critical
piece of equipment, even when multiple births occur at once. Thankfully, most babies don’t need
resuscitation, but those who do need it immediately. The additional warmer ensures that infants
who need a moderate level of specialized care receive it as quickly as possible.

Investing in our caregivers, our future
A revamped scholarship program will assist Providence St. Mary caregivers in their pursuit of academic
growth and development while bringing the latest in clinical expertise to our community.
The Providence St. Mary Service League, our hospital volunteers, have designated a generous portion of
their fundraising efforts to increase scholarship money available to caregivers. Their contribution will go
to a new Scholarship Fund, managed by Providence St. Mary Foundation, ensuring the money stays local
and additional tax-deductible donations can be accepted.
These scholarships will serve as a valuable resource to improve current job skills and invest in our
caregivers’ future.
Employee Giving Campaign sets record for participation
A record-breaking 32% of Providence St. Mary caregivers made pledges to the 2016 Employee
Giving Campaign. The Campaign is a once-a-year invitation to employees to make a financial gift in
support of their passions.
It is incredibly inspiring and heartwarming that so many of our caregivers, who see the needs, challenges
and success stories of our patients every day, are also some of our community’s most loyal donors.

Caregiver dedicates journey to
cancer patients and inspires support
Last September, Clint Froke proved it is possible to bicycle more
than 250 miles from Walla Walla to the Canadian border in
one day. Clint departed at midnight from Providence St. Mary
Regional Cancer Center, determined to use his bike to make a
statement. He decided on a bold, if somewhat daunting, goal—
biking to Canada in 24 hours. “No one ever accused me of
having much common sense,” he says.

The journey was a symbolism of the tough journey a cancer patient faces. According to Clint,
“Without support, it makes both journeys much more difficult.”
The idea of the ride was born from Gran Fondo, the “Great Ride” to raise money for cancer patients.
He has been involved with the event since the very start 12 years ago.
Clint set up an account with everydayhero, a website that allows participants to personally raise
money for the event. In his mighty attempt, he raised awareness for the Gran Fondo and $4,355 for
cancer patients.
Clint will once again use his bike to make a statement. This year, he will cycle 270 miles from Canada
and end at the Gran Fondo on September 24, 2016.
