The warehouse space will host a dramatic display of the interior of the A380 - from economy through to first class - using specialist lighting, audio visuals and actual seats. It also incorporates four replicas of the internal galley spaces, and local seating areas will be constructed to facilitate air steward training for food service and space orientation. A food and beverage training facility has been designed to include functioning aircraft ovens powered by specially-dedicated aircraft power generators (400Hz). BRIGHTON HOUSE CLIENT SJB ARCHITECTS & INTERIORS This Brighton house is a 1970’s Gilford Bell Design. The client and SJB Architects envisaged retaining the major original Gilford Bell architectural elements consisting of archways and central spiral staircase and incorporating complementary new architectural design. One of the main goals of the project was to re-plan the space for greater efficiency incorporating a large indoor/outdoor area. As a result, this increased the air conditioning complexity and reduced the space for plant items and ductwork. Close coordination with the architect was required to overcome these spatial restrictions. In addition, the visual aspects of the mechanical outlets were highly detailed and discreetly integrated within the very modern environment. The collaboration between SJB Architects and Medland Metropolis resulted in a magnificently stylish home and comfortable living environment. 8 OUR PROJECTS 9 ROGERSELLER PRINCIPAL CONTACT RED DESIGN GROUP Rogerseller are a privately owned company, and market leaders in high quality bathroom fixtures and fittings selling both local and international bathroom products. The site required considerable replacement and upgrade of the existing services and building fabric to achieve a minimalist and energy efficient design. The main environmental initiatives were a water recycling plant to reuse water in their display fixtures and fittings, and task lighting that incorporates with an abundance of natural daylight and reduces the power consumption of the over head lighting. 10 OUR PROJECTS 11 MEDICAL ONE ARCHITECT MADDISON ARCHITECTS Medland Metropolis were engaged to provide full design and documentation in mechanical, electrical, fire and hydraulic services for the tenancy fitout of medical centre, Medical One, in the prominent location of QV, Melbourne. The challenge for this project was to produce a tailored fitout within the budget constraints while providing a fitout to meet the client’s needs. Concise project management together with accurate budgets and on site monitoring resulted in the services meeting expectations. The focus on construction administration resulted in the delivery of the required solution. Clever use of specialist lighting and out of the box thinking saw the project remain within budget whilst providing a design which complements the architectural vision of the client. 12 OUR PROJECTS MACRO WHOLEFOODS CLIENT RED DESIGN GROUP AREA 2,400sqm Medland Metropolis provided full services design for the Macro Wholefoods tenancy roll-out which consisted of the refurbishment of six stores throughout Melbourne and Sydney. Macro stores are intensive retail environments with all the requirements of a modern supermarket with a natural, rustic atmosphere. This project required Medland Metropolis to incorporate all new aspects of the Macro design brief into the limited supporting infrastructure of the existing buildings. Through careful integration of services, the Medland team achieved the desired comfortable retail environment without losing the authenticity of the original building. 13 AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL AUSTRALIA ARCHITECT ARTILLERY ARCHITECTURE AREA 1,400sqm 14 OUR PROJECTS The Amnesty International Australia tenancy refurbishment included two floors of tenancy fitout in Sydney. Medland Metropolis were commissioned by Artillery Architecture to design and document the mechanical, electrical and data, lighting, hydraulics, fire and security services. The design of the space consisted of exposed architectural elements where existing and new services were required to blend harmoniously. Without any documentation we had to work closely with base building contractors and architect to source information and translate this information into working documents. Intense coordination was required to achieve the desired outcome. This project was a successful transformation of a dark and gloomy space into a light and clean fitout that welcomes people entering. NORTON ROSE, FORMERLY DEACONS ARCHITECT CARR DESIGN BUILDER BUILT PROJECT MANAGER BUILT AREA (SYDNEY) 9,125sqm AREA (BRISBANE) 5,000sqm AREA (CANBERRA) 800sqm Medland Metropolis is the engineer of choice for Norton Rose. Commencing in 2005 with a needs analysis and benchmarking for the relocation of Norton Rose in Sydney, our relationship has grown to encompass full services across three locations. The impressive Grosvenor Place tower was chosen to house Norton Rose Sydney. Comprising five levels, the fitout features a spacious and dramatic reception area, front of house client area, board rooms, meeting rooms, commercial kitchen, entertaining area, offices, workstations, break-out areas, utilities, storage zones, and a dedicated communications room. The Canberra office, whilst smaller, has been designed to the same standards as was designed for Sydney. Medland Metropolis has also completed the due diligence and benchmarking for the Brisbane office together with design and documentation of all services including ESD for their fitout in 111 Eagle Street. Medland Metropolis’s engineering design delivers on a quality luxury environment, which is service-rich and seamless, reflecting the professionalism and integrity of Norton Rose. 15 TRIPTYCH CLIENT STABLE PROPERTIES ARCHITECT NETTLETON TRIBE BUILDER LU SIMON Triptych was a project that challenged all conventional building services boundaries and the engineering mindset, redefining the art of living. Medland Metropolis was engaged by the client knowing that within the engineering intellect lay the passion and a vision for excellence to deliver flexible building services. The challenge set by the client required the building services to be flexible in design to allow for changes to the building apartment footprint. This was met in the design of a services spine. The ‘spine’ is essentially a vertical services chamber that runs right through the building from top to bottom. There are a series of these throughout the tower that provide the services to each apartment. With the advent of the joinery ‘spine’, we are able to consolidate mechanical, waste, ventilation ducts, exhaust and return air within these chambers. This means that floor plans can be very flexible, apartments are quiet, exhaust is expelled vertically, and ceiling heights are not compromised by bulkheads. 16 OUR PROJECTS 17 ACCENTURE ARCHITECT SIREN DESIGN GROUP PROJECT MANAGER JONES LANG LASALLE AREA 4,420sqm 18 OUR PROJECTS Medland Metropolis provided full services design for the Accenture fitouts in Melbourne and Brisbane. The Melbourne fitout included a partial refit using the previous tenants’ partition and some existing services, while the work completed in Brisbane was the fitout of a new space. There was a strong focus on designing sophisticated communication and audio visual facilities for both fitouts, as the offices often support project teams who do not have allocated desks. The results were functional spaces with a creative flair. DIAGEO ARCHITECT THE WORLD IS ROUND PTY LTD PROJECT MANAGER HAMILTON THOMSON BUILDER HENANT GROUP PTY LTD AREA 500sqm Diageo is located within the Rosella complex in Richmond and Medland Metropolis were responsible for the mechanical, electrical, fire and hydraulic services design, which included integration with the base building refurbishment. The result was a vibrant and creative new space that embraces and integrates into the old warehouse area. 19 WILLIAM ANGLISS CULINARY ACADEMY - TAFE REFURBISHMENT ARCHITECT 1:1 ARCHITECTS This project required the transformation of an existing warehouse structure into a modern teaching environment for training of up to 600 chefs, cooks and patissiers per year. Mechanically, the state of the art teaching kitchens required considerable amounts of exhaust, make up air and base building ductwork upgrading. A great deal of coordination across disciplines and on site was required to successfully implement the complex and concentrated services design. A modern and highly functional education facility incorporating two state of the art training unit kitchens, a demonstration kitchen and a specially equipped area for the provision of coffee/bar training, was the result. 20 OUR PROJECTS MOBILITY CENTRE, FEDERATION SQUARE ARCHITECT DESIGN CULTURE Medland Metropolis provided mechanical, electrical and hydraulic services for Melbourne’s first mobility centre, located within Federation Square. The Mobility Centre is an integral part of the transport network, providing easier and improved access to venues for people with disabilities, older persons, and those with temporary disabilities. The existing carpark area within a multi-storey complex was transformed into a functional retail environment with a comfortable lobby-style area for customers to enjoy while utilising the services provided. The exposed services are designed to complement the existing carpark environment, while other services are concealed within service areas of the tenancy to maximise access for servicing and the like. Medland Metropolis is proud to be associated with the design of the Melbourne Mobility Centre, a clean and aesthetically pleasing retail environment complete with amenities shared between staff and clients. 21 PORSCHE WAREHOUSE ARCHITECT ATELIER TECHNE Medland Metropolis were engaged to provide documentation on mechanical, electrical, fire and hydraulic services. The 3000sqm Porsche spare parts warehouse was part of an international logistics upgrade. Working closely with Atelier Techne architects, Medland Metropolis aimed at reducing the visual impact of the building services. Classed as a high hazard occupancy, the fire sprinkler system which comprised of ESFR Sprinklers was resolved early in the design process. These Early Suppression Fast Response sprinklers have very specific design guidelines which had a significant impact on the building structure and ventilation. Completion target dates were set to align with Porsche’s international logistical upgrade. The overall result is a warehouse that stands out with its sharp features and well planned design, a Porsche prerequisite. 22 OUR PROJECTS 23 PENLEIGH AND ESSENDON GRAMMAR SCHOOL ARCHITECT MCBRIDE CHARLES RYAN SIZE 1,200sqm Medland Metropolis designed the mechanical, electrical, fire and hydraulic services for the new Junior Boys building, a two storey block to house Years 5 and 6. All services were closely co-ordinated with the unique interior details and the architectural function was further enhanced through the integration of natural ventilation and natural light penetration. The classrooms feature interactive white boards, dimmable pendants, motion sensor lights and intruder detection alarm systems. External lights were installed to provide directional lighting to help navigate the amenities but also to provide security lighting at night time. External lighting is managed via a lighting level sensor and time controls. A rainwater harvesting system was implemented to provide rainwater to urinals and toilets as well as water saving fixtures throughout the bathrooms, including a pumped hot water service loop to minimise water wastage. 24 OUR PROJECTS THE JOEY CLUB CLIENT QANTAS INTERIOR DESIGNER GEYER DESIGN The Joey Clubs, located at Melbourne and Sydney Airports, are the first Qantas Child Care Centre developments boasting excellent facilities for Qantas employees. One of the greatest challenges was to provide exposed ductwork and lighting solutions to complement the soft, playful and nurturing childcare environment. Medland Metropolis achieved this by utilising sustainable systems and equipment such as VRF air conditioning which provided the ability to control multiple environments to suit differing comfort conditions at any given time. To meet the challenges that were offered, we utilised a fabric duct to distribute the conditioned air, and also designed continuous fluorescent lighting within the duct to provide the low level ambient light throughout the space. The glowing fabric ductwork was suspended at a high level and then combined with scattered dimmable pendants which allow for lighting adjustments to suit the activities of the children. 25 LIFESTYLE WORKING CLIENT STABLE PROPERTIES ARCHITECT NETTLETON TRIBE 5 STAR NABERS ENERGY Medland Metropolis completed the design and documentation for mechanical, electrical, fire, hydraulic, environmental and data for this purpose built commercial office development in Sydney that raises the bar on effective working environments. Recognising the itinerant energy requirements of the modern work environment, each unit within the development has independent controls for lighting and air conditioning, as well as natural ventilation systems. One hundred and eighty solar panels provide sufficient power to resource all the common facilities, including circulation spaces and meeting rooms. State of the art air conditioning systems, which feature heat/cool recovery, plus water harvesting systems contribute to a highly intelligent and energy efficient commercial working environment. 26 27 HOTEL SHANGRI-LA ARCHITECT WATERMARK Medland Metropolis were engaged to provide integrated services for a premium upgrade to the Cairns facilities originally built in the late 1980’s. The project included 36 new 5-star hotel guest rooms, a new restaurant with adjoining boardwalk, a new Horizons Club and Executive Lounge and a refurbished foyer. The hotel was short-listed in 2007 for the prestigious Design Institute Award. ROCKHAMPTON LIBRARY ARCHITECT BREWSTER HJORTH The Rockhampton City Council engaged Medland Metropolis to provide mechanical, electrical, fire, audio visual, hydraulic and lift design services for their 2,500sqm library. The space incorporated a café, exhibition area, large auditorium, youth library and business services centre. The new building links to the heritage School of Arts building which is to be upgraded as Council offices, and to the existing library building, which will be returned as stack. The $35 million works were completed without closure to the hotel facility. Medland Metropolis collaborated with the architect, Brewster Hjorth, to provide innovative services solutions. As a team, we achieved a visually identifiable and multifunctional space to complement the clients’ specific needs. 28 OUR PROJECTS 29 MONTEFIORE RETIREMENT HOME ARCHITECT FLOWER AND SAMIOS Medland Metropolis were engaged to design and document electrical, mechanical and environmental services and to seamlessly integrate the critical care requirements with the aesthetically sensitive environment. This Sydney facility comprises 300 service-rich diversified resident dwellings, a large commercial kitchen, laundry, nurse areas, assisted bathrooms, lunchrooms, additional kitchens, dining rooms, retail areas, a fitness centre and a Synagogue. 30 31 LYNBROOK AGED CARE &COMMUNITY CENTRE ARCHITECT ROTHELOWMAN PROJECT MANAGEMENT MONTLAUR PROJECT SERVICES Medland Metropolis were appointed on a $60 million development that incorporates Stage 1, a 5300sqm, 100 bed aged care facility and Stage 2, a 1000sqm community centre and infrastructure for the entire site including 200 independent living units. Medland Metropolis were engaged for mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and fire protection services design. This project also incorporates community facilities including a warm water pool which is heated by a cogeneration plant to maintain both the air and water temperatures. The electricity generated is then used to power the lighting in the common areas of the facility and/or transfer back into the grid when electricity demand is low. 32 OUR PROJECTS BROWNLESS LIBRARY, UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE ARCHITECT MCBRIDE CHARLES RYAN The Brownless Biomedical Science Library at the University of Melbourne was an outdated and uninspiring building and in desperate need of a helping hand to bring it into the future, and it did not comply with the current building standards. In conjunction with McBride Charles Ryan Architects, Medland Metropolis transformed the building into a modern vibrant space. From improving technical aspects of the building such as the control of air conditioning and lighting, to the aesthetic of the building and its moonscape ceiling (complete with craters in the form of air conditioning grilles and lighting), the services within the building have underwritten a transformation into something that looks and feels like an motivating place for biomedical students. 33 LAGUNA CLIENT CHRIS MEDLAND ARCHITECT FARNAN FINDLAY Medland Metropolis worked with Farnan Findlay Architects to design renewable building services for this rural company retreat. Isolated from all standard town utilities, Medland Metropolis systems designs delivered all the energy requirements of the house without loss of amenity. Powered by roof mounted solar cells, which are augmented by a wind generator for cloudy days, the amenities include televisions, a clothes washer, dryer, flushing toilets and a gas oven and stove. Four large steel rainwater tanks, with a capacity of 100,000 litres each, flank the house and provide a reservoir so deep and dark that they eliminate the need for water purification. Laguna Retreat was featured on The World’s Greenest Homes in 2009. 34 OUR PROJECTS 35 OUR ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE DESIGN PROJECTS »» NATURAL VENTILATION UNIVERISTY OF QUEENSLAND GLOBAL CHANGE INSTITUTE Targeting 6 Star Green Star »» BUILDING INSULATION GEYSER, NZ 6 Star Green Star Office Design (Currently In Construction) »» ANALYSIS OF GLAZING OPTIONS LIFESTYLE WORKING 5 Star NABERS Energy & 6 Star NABERS Water »» THERMAL MASS NIB 5 Star Green Star »» LABYRINTHS & FREE COOLING VIA THERMAL MASS THE CORSO, NORTH LAKES 5 Star Green Star (Design) Awarded Under The Public Building Pilot Tool »» DAY LIGHT RUGBY LEAGUE CENTRAL 5 Star Green Star Office Interiors & 5 Star Nabers (Design Only) »» TEMPERATURE CONTROL RATIONALISATION ORIGIN ENERGY OFFICES 5 Star Green Star Office Fitout »» LIGHTING CONTROLS »» SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC CELLS »» WIND TURBINES JOURNAL BUILDING RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX 5 Star Green Star »» CORPORATE CULTURE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM QUAD5, NZ 5 Star Green Star Office Design »» WASTE MANAGEMENT »» STANDBY MODE & WASTE POWER REDUCTION »» RAINWATER HARVESTING »» BLACK WATER HARVESTING »» GREY WATER HARVESTING »» SOLAR BOOSTER HOT WATER IRONBANK 5 Star Green Star Office Design & As Built NSW POLICE HEAD OFFICE 5 Star Green Star Office Design 112 TALAVERA RD, NORTH RYDE COMMERCIAL OFFICE COMPLEX 5 Star Green Star (Not Accredited) ST JOHNS AMBULANCE 5 Star Green Star (In Design) APRA 5 Star Green Star SYDNEY ADVENTIST HOSPITAL COMMERCIAL FITOUT 5 Star Green Star Office Interiors (Not Accredited) WORLEY PARSONS NABERS (In Design) Target 5 Stars VIVID WIRELESS 5 Star Green Star And 5 Star NABERS (In Review) INTERFACE FLOR 5 Star Green Star LOW CARBON AUSTRALIA Targeting 5 Star NABERS REDFERN HOUSING 5 Star Green Star QUEENSLAND EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTRE Green Star Office Design (In Design) Target 5 Stars ALLENS ARTHUR ROBINSON 4 Star Green Star Office Accredited 92 ALBERT STREET NZ 4 Star Green Star Office Design 3M NZ 4 Star Green Star Office Interiors Accredited 175 PITT STREET SYDNEY, COMMERCIAL TOWER REFURBISHMENT 4 Star Green Star Office Design QUEENSLAND ACADEMY OF CREATIVE INDUSTRIES 4 Star Green Star HASSELL 5 Star Green Star 41 BELGRAVE STREET, KOGARAH COMMERCIAL REFURBISHMENT Green Star In Design GOOGLE CAMPUS LONDON LEED “Gold” Rating LARGE FINANCIAL ORGANISATION LONDON BREEAM “Very Good” Rating ALCATEL LUCENT NZ 4 Star Green Star Office Design UNITING CHURCH AGED CARE Gerringong Feasibility Study ROYAL COLLEGE OF GENERAL PRACTITIONERS Targeting BREEAM “Very Good” Rating APPLE STRATFORD Targeting BREEAM “Excellent” Rating BELRON INTERNATIONAL BREEAM “Very Good” Rating GDF SUEZ BREEAM “Very Good” Rating GENERATION INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT Ska “Gold” Rating 36 37 INNOVATION APPLE BONDI REVIT MODEL CORONA CONCEPT DESIGN QUEENSLAND EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTRE CONCEPT DESIGN AUSTRALIAN CENTRAL CREDIT UNION DIALUX MODEL GLOBAL CHANGE INSTITUTE REVIT MODEL CICSO CONCEPT MODEL CROWN SHOPPING CENTRE REVIT MODEL GLOBAL CHANGE INSTITUTE CONCEPT DESIGN 38 INNOVATION 39 INNOVATE The Innovate stream of the Empower programme is expressed through MM Time.
