Bicycling Safety Top 10 List Riding bicycles on roadways, or on bicycle-only trails that cross roadways, can be dangerous. Follow these safety tips: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. You’ll not only bike through the Indiana Dunes and along Lake Michigan, but you’ll also tour our communities and rural areas. Note that bicyclists share the roadways with vehicles on all the loops listed under Indiana Dunes Country Biking Routes on the map page. This trail starts at Indiana Dunes State Park along Lake Michigan and goes south to the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center. Eventually, the trail is expected link the dunes in the north to the Kankakee River in the south, as well as going along the river. The 5-mile Iron Horse Heritage Trail runs east-west through the City of Portage, from Imagination Glen Park East (where the Iron Horse connects with the Prairie Duneland Trail) west to Hamstrom Road.
