February 2016 - Mid Valley Unit
Backcountry Horsemen of California — Mid Valley Unit Mid Valley Monthly FEBRUARY 2016 Page 1 President’s Message The first time I visited Bishop Mule Days I found BCH at a booth there. When I returned I found the Mid Valley Unit. That was over 25 years ago (I am not sure of the exact year). Ever since then I have been heavily involved in the unit activities. I have not missed many meetings since I started. So you might wonder why such involvement. Well, to start with, I had a love for the back country and wanted to learn more about packing and camping in the back country. I learned that and am still learning more every time I go on a trip. As time went on, I realized how much BCH was doing statewide and even nationwide for horsemen everywhere. So I have tried to stay involved in order to pursue the BCH motto of “Keeping Trails Open for All.” As we look around at our trails systems, there is always someone trying to close our access to trails and use of the back country. This is why I believe we all have a responsibility to work and fight back against these misguided forces. As we are recreating with friends who are not members of BCH, it is our responsibility to make them aware of what the organization is doing and that BCH is the only nationwide organization focused on “Keeping Trails Open for All.” Even those who are not horsemen should see the benefits of joining BCH. So keep a membership application handy to give to those who are not members and get them to sign up. Ripon Almond Blossom Festival Will Kick Off Parade Season By Barb Savery The 2016 parade season for Mid Valley began January 19 with an organizational meeting. At the meeting, we reviewed parade dress, discussed the parade schedule and began the process of preparing our second application to the Tournament of Roses Parade. All Mid Valley members who are interested in participating in one or more parades were invited to attend. The first parade of the season will be the Ripon Almond Blossom Festival, Saturday, February 27. All Mid Valley members are welcome to participate. Riders should plan to arrive at 8:30 a.m.; judging will be at 10:30 a.m. Please park between Main Street and Fourth Street, in the large lots east of South Stockton Avenue. If you would like a map, please let Barb Savery know, or you can go to the Ripon Chamber of Commerce website and review their map. Parade dress for those in the Rose Parade unit will be determined at the January 19 meeting. For members who are not in the Rose Parade unit, parade dress will be blue fleece vest, white shirt, dark blue jeans, brown belt and boots, straw hat. Please bathe your animals and clip their noses and pasterns. All equipment should be cleaned and oiled. Lunch will be provided after the parade. If members have questions, please contact Barb Savery at 209-536-9362 or [email protected]. I am looking forward to a great year! Here in Mid Valley Unit we have dedicated groups organizing many different activities that range from packing to cooking to riding and many other interests. We offer something for everyone. I don’t have enough room to mention them all here, but you will see them mentioned in this newsletter. We have many members we never see and we thank them for their support, but we would like to see them at our activities. All will be welcomed and will see the benefits of getting involved. Coming up March 18 to 20 we will be having our annual BCHC Rendezvous in Angels Camp, and Mid Valley Unit members will be busy helping put the events on. This is the second year the Rendezvous will be held in Angels Camp and then next year it will be moving to Bishop. Don’t miss this year as the Rendezvous is close by! See you on the trail, Dennis Attention Mid Valley Youth AND Novice Packers! There will be a packing practice at the Dollarhide’s residence in Escalon, February 15 @ 1 p.m. Anyone interested in practicing loading a pack animal and tying various hitches is welcome to join us! Doug and his crew will have pack stock and the iron mule available for our use, so you don’t have to haul any livestock. There will be various items to practice loading, and we can practice tying our hitches so Mid Valley Unit can clean up at the Rendezvous’ contests! Whether you are interested in competing in some of the packing contests, or just interested in improving your skills, or even just starting out, come join us for an afternoon of fun! Give Doug Dollarhide (209-838-7630) or Karen Lopes (209-756-5534) a call for more information. Members only please, although new members may certainly join that day! I hope it was a nice and safe holiday. Barbara Savery lost a friend last month. "May your old horsey friend Rest in Peace.” Deb and Scott Lewis lost three animals in the last four months - a mule, a donkey and a horse. Sorry for such a loss. Don Rumsey had ankle replacement surgery. He said he is doing great and looking forward to a great year. Al Baptista is going to have heart surgery on the 20th of this month. I talked to him the day I wrote this article and he is doing fine and still running around. Molly Fuller, the USFS District Ranger, has had knee surgery. I haven't talked to her so I don't have any information about her condition. Judith Kavanaugh's mother passed away at the young age of 97. I know Judy will miss her, but her mom will be in a better place. Manuel and his wife, Carla, were always involved with Mid Valley events, always volunteering to help wherever they were needed. Due to family medical needs, he and Carla slowly became less and less involved. Manuel quietly slipped away from us. He was a good man and will be missed by all his Mid Valley friends. MID VALLEY MONTHLY FEBRUARY 2016 Dutch Oven Gathering Report Membership By Vicki Whisler By Claudia Parrish Wow, what a great start to 2016! First of all, thank you to everyone who attended our New Year’s Day ride and potluck at Red Hills! We had 107 people sign in but Kathy Zumbrunn and I are sure a few were missed. What a great bunch we have in our unit. Again the food was awesome - thank you Dutch oven cooks for some new Dutch oven dishes. Thank you to the rest who brought dishes they had made at home or purchased. Everything was great including the weather, which was cool in the early morning but warmed up and there was sunshine later. There were lots of riders and everyone said the creek was running and it was perfect riding weather. I have some items that were left behind: Two matching chairs and a Tupperware casserole dish were not claimed at Carl Perry's DOG. I will bring the items to all Dutch Oven Gatherings (DOGs) until claimed! Thank you, Rudy Dezzani, for cooking the turkeys. The current Mid Valley Unit membership is at 370. Please welcome these new members: Kimberly Peterson from Twain Harte, Shauna Rico from Oakdale, Martha McNeil from San Martin, Steve Sonderson from Pinecrest, and Betty Saletta from Oakdale. Hopefully, you will meet these new members at our Lucky Valentine’s Ride at Gateway Park and other future events. Thank you John Marshall, Bob Cooper and Dennis Wetherington for helping me set up and put things back in the trailer! Also I have had several people ask who made the green chili dish. If you made it or know who did, could you let me know? The DOG at the Perry's was fantastic! Even though it rained early, the rain quit long enough for the cooks to get their Dutch oven dishes done. It was cool out in the gazebo but with the fire pit going and all the cooking going on, it was fine. We moved inside and WOW what a spread! There were more Dutch oven dishes than I have ever seen at a single event. We had 40 people sign in. Almost everyone cooked a Dutch oven dish (even two of the Rumsey girls. Kaitlyn's molten chocolate lava cake was a chocolate lover’s dream and Mikayla's jalapeño cornbread was great, too. Ok, Kaycee, now it’s your turn! David, look out! A few cooks made two dishes. Doug Dollarhide said the blessing then we feasted! Everything from the salads to the desserts was delicious. Thank you, Carl and Julie, for hosting this great event. Thank you to those who helped clean up and who helped me get things back in the trailer! The next DOG is at Tina MacLauchlan's in San Andreas on January 30. Address: 237 Church Hill Road, San Andreas 95249 Directions: In the town of San Andreas there is a flashing yellow light. That is Church Hill Road. If you are coming from Valley Springs turn RIGHT (NOTE it is very tight if there is another vehicle there). If you are coming from Angels Camp turn LEFT. At the top of the hill, immediately beside the red brick Mormon Church is the driveway. Go through the white vinyl fence, across the cattle guard, drive back and park by the shop. There will be a DOG sign up on the fence. February 6 at Mar ybeth Baglione's, 16601 Car r olton Road, Escalon. February 20 at J im Westmor eland's, 22922 Ar thur Road, Escalon. March 5 at J oan Lewis's, 17241 Campbell Ave., Escalon (off Hwy 120). The Rendezvous is March 18 through 20 at Angels Camp Fairgrounds. The Dutch oven competition is on Sunday, March 20. I would love to see some of our awesome Dutch oven cooks compete! Entries must be in to me by March 5. The entry fee is $30 per team. A team consists of one to four people. At least one of the team must be over 18 years of age. If I do not have at least five teams signed up by March 5 in a division (Amateur or Pro), that division will be canceled and entry fees refunded! Go to bchcalifornia.org for more information or call me at 209-480-0566. Questions? Contact Vicki Whisler at 209-480-0556 or [email protected]. When you pay your membership, you may notice that a “young adult” aged 18 to 25 years old can join BCHC for $15 per year. This change was made by BCHC to encourage youth to join with the discounted membership. There are three other types of memberships where you may donate an additional amount above the Individual ($50/year) and Family ($60/year) memberships to help promote the objectives of Backcountry Horsemen of California. Each of these memberships, Mt. Whitney ($500/year), Patron ($250/ year), and Benefactor ($100/year), entitles an individual or family full membership status, plus it is tax deductible! Please join me in recognizing these Mid Valley Unit members: Mt. Whitney Terri Arington Patron Lloyd and Susan Erlandson Benefactor Karen Barindelli Jay and Elizabeth Barnes Gary and Michelle Cain Dennise Davis Family Carol Jo Hargreaves and Larry Schneider David and Christine Kraft Bob and Sandra Magee John Marshall Mid Valley Unit Claudia Parrish Dan and Toni Peterson Dennis and Loretta Serpa PAGE 3 MID VALLEY MONTHLY 2016 Calendar Sales By Kathy Zumbrunn I must say I am quite disappointed in our members. This past year we only had 388 2016 calendars to sell, which is less than one calendar per Mid Valley member by the way. Unfortunately we still have approximately 22 calendars left. I cannot understand why this is such a hard task to complete. I know people are disappointed they do not win…but the idea of this fundraiser is to make money for our BCHC causes, not to give away money to everyone! The $25 is actually a donation to BCHC, and with that donation comes a colorful calendar and a raffle ticket that gives the buyer approximately 215 chances to win some money. It is like playing lotto, but with better odds! We must remember we are helping to put money in the bank so BCHC can afford legal battles to keep stock in the backcountry, fund projects to keep trails clear, purchase gear to perform trail work, and provide educational seminars for our youth. It is by far the easiest and best way to raise money. We are now in the process of assembling the 2017 BCHC Lucky Calendar, and I am hoping everyone will step up and take some calendars to sell when they are ready. Calendars should be ready for dispersal right before Rendezvous. Remember, there is always an Early Bird Drawing at Rendezvous. Therefore, you get a head start and a better chance to win! Please think about giving calendars as gifts. Thank your farrier, pet sitter, baby sitter, mechanic, clients, etc. It is better than giving a tie! Give the gift that can keep on giving, or at least adorn a wall (and maybe win some money)! All I ask is that you do your part to support Mid Valley Unit and BCHC this year. Thank you. FEBRUARY 2016 Closing Down Mather Corral Jay and Elizabeth Barnes have been longtime members of our Mid Valley Unit and live in Oakdale. During the summer months the Barnes family has operated the Mather Pack Station in Yosemite National Park at the San Francisco-owned Camp Mather near Hetch Hetchy. This is their recent announcement: Jay and Liz Barnes It is with great emotion and regret that we inform you of the curtailment of the trail rides and Hay Rides at Camp Mather by the Barnes Family, after 86 years. This marks the end of an era. Each spring we have looked forward to our upcoming summer activities and seeing the many wonderful folks that have come to the corral during the Mather Camp summer season. Many factors have contributed to this difficult decision. Among them are the effects and results of the Rim Fire of 2013, the ongoing drought conditions, the increasing costs of operating, the increasing difficulty finding and keeping qualified and dependable staff, and the problems with rigid government interference and red tape. All these factors plus the realization that we are getting older ourselves. We have fond memories of watching the friends and families that have visited The Mather Corral for generations. We have looked forward to the times we have been able to visit and share the many stories and Jay Barnes on “Rooster” memories from, all of you, that have always taken the time to “Come on down”, to see us. We have enjoyed teaching the kids how to ride horses and giving them a wilderness experience out on the trail and by the corral. We hope you all will cherish these memories as much as we do. We have treasured your patronage and friendship throughout the years and hope our trails will cross again. Happy Trails to You, Jay and Elizabeth Barnes For further information about the future of the horse operation, please contact Andrew Smothers, S.F. Rec. BCHA did some great outreach to hunters and equestrians at the Hunter Christmas in Las Vegas in December, and we want everyone to know what happened in Vegas! The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation held their Elk Camp and Conference in conjunction with the National Finals Rodeo “Cowboy Christmas” for the second consecutive year. BCHA was present at this inaugural collaboration in 2014, and returned again in 2015. In 2014, the Rocky Mountain Elk Camp and their Hunter Christmas was four days in length; this year they expanded the full 10 days to coincide with Cowboy Christmas. BCHA had a booth in the upper story of the Las Vegas Convention Center’s South Hall. We were located next to the “Elk Country Theater,” where various presentations took place throughout the week. BCHA gave a presentation titled, “Packing Tips for the Hunting Horseman,” the first four days of the 10-day event. I started with a brief introduction of “Who We Are and What We Do,” sharing with the audience the number of members and value of our volunteerism over the course of one year. We had iron mules on the stage with all of our equipment, and a big screen where there were informational slides, as well as many pictures from various members showing BCHA in action. I then introduced Mack and Connie Long, from Montana, who gave a wonderful demonstration of how to manty a load, as well as how to pack out your elk using the Decker pack saddle. Casey Hufstader, from Oregon, then gave a great presentation (and some history) on how to use the sawbuck pack saddle, and the benefits of using the Walker hitch. He also included tips on how to restrain your stock in the backcountry. Once the presentation was over, both Mack and Casey invited the audience up to the stage to get hands-on practice. Our booth was decorated with two iron mules and had plenty of room for our volunteers to work with any of the spectators that wanted to get some hands-on experience with packing and tying loads. There was also a TV screen mounted in the corner, showing the various pictures that had been collected from many different members; most had captions that explained what or where the work was taking place. Deb Mason, from the Mid Valley Unit in California, donated a beautiful custom-made set of leather saddlebags with a BCHA stamp. Visitors to our booth filled out a card to be entered in the drawing for the gorgeous saddlebags. It was a great time, visiting with people as they walked through all of the many exhibits, sharing with them the goals and objectives of BCHA. I also especially enjoyed visiting with BCHA members from different states and learning more about the types of volunteer efforts they focus on in their state. Dennis Serpa, from Mid Valley Unit in California, orchestrated the entire booth. From soliciting members for pictures, organizing those pictures into the wonderful slide show; to getting the booth manned with volunteers for the entire 10 days, as well as the extra volunteers needed for the stage presentations; to hauling all of the equipment and setting up the display...Dennis did it all! Please give Dennis a HUGE thank you for making this happen. The booth was planned out with attention to detail and Dennis dedicated an enormous amount of time in preparation for this event. Mike Kohlbaker, from California, was available the entire 10 days, filling in whenever the shifts to man the booth needed extra volunteers. Many thanks to Mike as well. Lloyd Erlandson, also from California, volunteered to take down the booth and haul everything back home. Thank you, Lloyd! Additionally, here are the volunteers that helped with the booth and/or presentations: From California: Dennis and Lor etta Ser pa, Kar en Lopes, Mike and Norma Kohlbaker, Lloyd and Susan Erlandson, Sue Watkins, Bill Carter, Chip and Linda Herzig, Troy and Susie Patton, Merrill Weston, Paul and Gail van Velzer, Richard Waller, Randy Hackbarth, Carl and Julie Perry. From Colorado: Kathy Davey, Kitty Bladt, Shirley Howington. From Montana: Mack and Connie Long. From Nevada: Terry Jones, Elaine McPherson. From Oregon: Casey Hufstader , Matt Hope. From Utah: Wayne Luddington, Rod Player, Richard Webb, Craig Allen, Freddy Dunn, Debra Anderson, Alan Phister. From Wyoming: Bill Hackney.
