We have reached the end of the first quarter of the school year, fall has arrived and students have fully adjusted to their daily routines. It has been a smooth and fast start, and I would like to thank all parents, students, and staff members for their role in a successful beginning to the academic year. October and November are important months in terms of education and enrollment. There are typically only very minimal interruptions to the calendar in October and early November, which makes it a great time to zero in on key educational concepts and cover a lot of ground academically. October is also the month in which enrollment numbers are finalized and these numbers are what drive the largest portion of our funding from the State of Ohio. Approximately 64% of our ADM (Average Daily Membership) funding comes from the State . . . the remaining 36% is generated locally through real estate taxes. This calculation is why enrollment is such a critical key to maintaining district revenue. There are some major changes coming just around the corner for Ohio school districts that I would like to share with our residents. These changes include the elimination of calamity days for inclement weather, and a shift from a required number of days in a school year to a required number of hours by the Ohio Department of Education. These shifts in policy will likely impact the school calendar beginning in the 2014-15 school year. Another major shift that is currently under review by the Ohio Department of Education involves a complete overhaul in high school graduation requirements based on required end of course exams. The committee is still working on these new requirements but a transition to the new system is scheduled to begin with the class of 2017. Congratulations to the students and staff at Tri-Valley Middle School on their recognition as one of an elite group of 141, Schools of Promise in Ohio. Schools of Promise are selected by the State Superintendent based on exceptional academic performance on the Ohio Achievement Tests. The following link outlines the specific criteria for receiving this designation: http://education.ohio.gov/getattachment/Topics/School-Improvement/ Awards-and-Recognition/Schools-Of-Promise-Awardees/2013 Section Criteria SOP.pdf.aspx Congratulations go out as well to our fall sports teams and the TV Marching Band for another successful season. We are well on the way to earning the Muskingum Valley League All Sports Trophy for the 12th consecutive year. Mark K. Developed by the military, this test helps students identify the occupations that best suit their abilities. Military pesonnel will visit the high school in January to interpret the results. Mid-East Career and Technology Center Mobile Lab to Visit TVMS The Mid-East Mobile Lab provides students with a chance to discover career intersts and individual strengths at an early age. Before visiting the lab, students will complete a Career Exploration Inventory. This allows them to choose high interest career clusters to further research when participating in activities. Students will have access to Coin Jr. Software, a program that allows them to research their own personal career interests. Moreover, salary expectation, specific training and education, and future job outlook are among the many topics they can also explore. Tri-Valley eighth graders will have the opportunity to participate in the lab activities on November 8, 12, 18 and 19. They will experience career exploration opportunities in the mobile lab as well as be informed of the many programs and extracurricular activities offered at the Mid-East Career and Technology Center. Students will complete this program with a field trip to the MidEast Campus on November 25, 2013. Scottie Kids Club is off to a fantastic start this year. Just ask the more than 200 kids that are participating! Scottie Kids Club is the name of our District’s Latch Key Program. We are pleased to offer before and after school programming for school aged children, ages five to eleven. We have two sites—one at Dresden Elementary and one at Nashport Elementary. We are open every day that school is in session from 6:30am to the start of the school day and from the end of the school day until 5:30 pm. Cost to participate is $5.00 per session. Our goal is to provide structured fun in a positive, well supervised setting. Students have the opportunity to play games, participate in free play activities, and enjoy creative centers each day. We even provide homework help in the afternoons. We continue to take registrations on an ongoing basis. If you or someone you know is in need of childcare before or after school we would be happy to help. You can print an application off of the www.tvschools.org website or you can pick up an application packet at either of the two elementary school offices or from the Tri-Valley Fitness Center in Dresden. We are a fully licensed program with the Ohio Department of Education and are partners with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. CHECK OUT THE TV FITNESS CENTER! If you haven’t been to the Tri-Valley Fitness Center in Dresden lately you should definitely stop in. We have so much to offer and are a fun and affordable option for anyone wanting to work on their fitness level or just wanting to be a little more active. Every month we offer some sort of movement challenge—-this is a great way to motivate yourself to keep working. We currently feature four fitness classes and all of our classes are included with your membership so we have no hidden costs. Right now we have Cardio Kickboxing, WERQ fitness, ZUMBA toning and Country Line Dancing. All of our classes are perfect for any ability level. We even have martial arts! Karate classes are offered here by Coszack’s Karate-Dresden on Tuesdays from 6-7:30pm and Thursdays from 6-7:00 for those 12 and under and from 7-8:30 pm for those 12 and over. Cost to participate in Karate is $5.00 a class for non-members of the Fitness Center and $4.00 per class for members. Open-basketball is held every Monday and Wednesday evening from 5:45pm to 8pm for pick-up games. We also offer family activities like kickball and basketball each month. Our brand new Community Fitness Series was recently introduced as a means for bringing people into our facility to get them moving towards a more fit lifestyle. A different class will be offered free of charge each month. October’s featured class was country line dancing. The fitness center also offers many senior activities including chair volleyball and low impact aerobics. Our facility features two basketball courts, an indoor track and a workout area filled with CYBEX strength training equipment and cardio machines. We recently added a sit-up bench, a curling bench and a BOSU balance ball to go along with our dumb bells, exercise balls and medicine balls. An online video tour of our facility as well as information on pricing can be found by going to our website at www. tvschools.org and clicking on the TVFitness tab on the left side of the screen. The Tri-Valley Fitness Center offers fun, affordable fitness in a location close to home. For more information call 740-754-2978. 5 A Busy Fall in Our Elementary Buildings! Our elementary students have had many opportunities this fall to learn from outside sources. Dresden and Frazeysburg kindergarten students took a walk around town to meet with community helpers. These stops included the bank, library, police station, fire house and several local businesses. Each community helper took time to explain their jobs, responsibilities and how going to school prepared them for their profession. Fire departments in each of our communities visited our elementary students to explain the importance of fire safety. Each of our elementary buildings sponsored a Grandparents Day where students could share what they were learning with “a very special person” in their lives. Nashport invited “OmegaMan” to their school to address the problem of bullying. Spirit Days with visits from our high school football team and cheerleaders were held at the buildings. Dresden Elementary sponsored a health walk to promote good eating habits and exercise. Field trips have been taken or are being planned to visit such places as Roscoe Village, the State House and Lynd’s Fruit Farm. The Wilds visited Frazeysburg Elementary bringing with them some “wild friends.” Patriot Day was held at Frazeysburg in memory of the events that took place on September 11, 2001. 6 We Lo ve d e th Food! p Ca m Camp Ohio is AW SOM E! As a fifth grader in the Tri-Valley School District, children have the opportunity to participate in the Tri-Valley Resident Outdoor Learning Experience at 4-H Camp Ohio in St. Louisville, Ohio. This is a unique learning experience that allows students to learn directly about the environment in an outdoor setting. Due to the large number of 5th graders in our district, students from the district attend two different sessions. Adamsville Elementary students attend Camp Ohio with Dresden Elementary students, and Frazeysburg and Nashport Elementaries attend together. Camp provides a variety of educational and fun activities in which students learn valuable social skills. Curriculum related activities include: weather, tree identification, animals and their habitats, outdoor cooking, early pioneer life, Native American shelters, first aid, team challenges, square dancing, arts and crafts, zipline, night hikes, and campfire activities. .Z .. g L Th ere was a O ip lin e! The history of the camp goes back to 1920. The two week camp involved forty 4-H boys and their advisors the first week and forty 4-H girls and their advisors the second week. Campers slept in tents on the ground and cooking and eating was outdoors. In 1928 several 4-H Extension Agents each contributed $500 of their own money to purchase 129 acres for $1,632.67 and over the years an additional 221 acres were purchased for a total cost of $61,295.00ss were purchased totaling an amount of $61,295.00 T of walking Fa i te r vo in h t 7 H a n gi n g o u t w f ith riends The 40 x 70 foot swimming pool was constructed in 1935 and a new recreation hall was completed in 1948. War bonds were sold to build the recreation hall. By 1954 the camp consisted of a dining hall, recreation building, 12 sleeping cabins, a director’s cottage plus several other small buildings. In 1964 the current concrete drive-over bridge was constructed. Heath schools were the first to utilize the camp’s programs in 1968. School programs use the camp starting in April ending in June and again starting in September and ending in November. Fifth Grade Camp for Tri-Valley students actually began in the Spring of 1977 when students attended Camp Robinhaven near Cambridge, Ohio. Roger Green, former principal at Dresden Elementary, was instrumental in establishing the program. A few years later the outdoor camp experience was moved to the 4-H Camp Ohio where it has remained since. In 1978 4-H Camp Ohio received accreditation from the American Camp Association (ACA). The ACA is the top national youth camping association in the USA. e Ir al ly lik ed my couns elor! 8 8th Grade Washington D.C. Trip Raffle Although the 8th grade trip to our nation’s capital is months away, students and staff are busily preparing for the year-end event. American History classes will be studying the founding generation and the formation of our government prior to the trip. After departing Dresden, early Wednesday morning on May 14, 2014, the first stop will be Gettysburg for a full afternoon of touring. Students, staff and parents arrive in D.C. for dinner around 6:00 p.m. and hopefully, a restful night. Thursday and Friday, students have two full days absorbing all that D.C. has to offer. A few stops included on the tour will be: the Capitol Building, Mount Vernon, the Martin-Luther King, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Jefferson Memorials and the Holocaust Museum. A stop at Arlington Cemetery will include the Changing of the Guard Ceremony. The Washington D.C. trip always provides our students an educational, fun filled, three days of touring and learning. Once again, we are looking forward to another fantastic trip with our eighth grade class! To help participating students and parents offset the cost of the trip, Tri-Valley Middle School sponsors a raffle featuring many wonderful prizes each day in February. This year, multiple winners will be chosen each day with winning bundles having a value of $20 or more. Raffle tickets will be sold by students or at TVMS beginning November 11. Graduated from Tri-Valley High School in 1994. Attended The Ohio State University - Newark Campus for two years. Attended the United States Naval Academy graduating with a B.S. in Physics focusing in Oceanography in 1998. Throughout high school and college, Gregg worked at the Dresden IGA. He went on to serve 23 years in the United States Air Force, stationed with the Ohio Air National Guard base near the Zanesville Municipal Airport. He states that being stationed in Zanesville for his entire career, allowed him to “stay home,” raise a family and be a contributing member of the community he loves. After retiring from the USAF, Gregg was hired by the Tri-Valley District and has worked at the middle school the past 10 years. Attended Harvard Kennedy School of Government: Masters in Public Administration focusing in Negotiation & Conflict Resolution in 2010. Gregg has a true love for the Tri-Valley School District, finding time to volunteer for various events over the past 34 years. He has covered Tri-Valley sports and school news for the Dresden Post Transcript since 1979 and has been the PA announcer for football games for the past 31 years. Gregg laughs as he says he “suffers from that incurable disease . . . ‘can’t say no to anyone.” Gregg’s wife Amy is a secretary at Dresden Elementary where their two children attend school. Ryan is in the 6th grade and Rachel is in the 4th grade. His two older daughters, Katie and Sarah are graduates of Tri-Valley. Katie currently teaches at Adamsville Elementary in the Tri-Valley District and Sarah lives in Washington DC working at George Washington University. When asked if there were teachers that influenced him toward his profession, he responded that Katherine Gault in English (as evidenced by his work with the paper) and Danny Butler for his love of sports. Favorite memories from high school include winning the MVL in the mile run, running 9:46 in the two-mile run, and the life-long friends that he made. He smiles as he recalls his favorite memory from his high school years . . . . having hair! Advice or words of wisdom he would give to parents/ children: “Bloom where you are planted! Attitude is EVERYTHING!” Laura spent 12 years in the U.S. Navy as a Helicopter Pilot flying the CH-46 SeaKnight deploying to the Persian Gulf in 2003 and the SH60F SeaHawk (BlackHawk) serving as a Flight Instructor. After grad school she spent 3 years as a Negotiation Colsultant and Trainer for The SAB Group as their lead instructor and negotiator for Fortune 500 companies around the world. Laura is currently working for The McChrystal Group and is in charge of Leadership Development, Training & Organizational Empowerment; in charge of the Executive Coaching Line. Her strongest memories from high school are two-fold. The first has to do with friendships. “I have particularly strong memories of being with my friends at football games, on the band bus, sitting at lunch in the commons or meeting in the hall between classes - these are the friends that I am still close with!” “The second has to do with basketball. That team, our basketball team, was an amazing group of girls. We worked hard and never gave up. Such great memories.” Laura’s favorite Tri-Valley teacher was Mr. Taylor-Lehman, who was always so excited to teach Biology. The class’ to the Bahamas left lasting impressions and to this day she compares every snorkeling adventure to that one. Tri-Valley staff members that inspired her choice of profession were Mr. Hartman and Mr. Keller. Mr. Hartman was her basketball coach and Mr. Keller was her track coach. Both were great inspirations . . . they taught the importance of teamwork, dedication, hard work and persistence. She believes that all of those were invaluable lessons that helped her to succeed in her military career and beyond. Laura lives in Washington D.C. and is married to Matt Maasdam, a Navy SEAL and founder of Move2Safety. They have 2 sons, Abraham who is 3 and Nathaniel who is 1. She enjoys traveling the world with her husband, spending time with her family and sisters, teaching spin classes and being an active member in her community. Advice for today’s students: Enjoy your time in high school, from football games to prom, making and keeping friends. Always remember to work hard, be kind to others and be involved - becomming as well-rounded as you can during your time in high school through sports, band, student council, volunteering, etc. Challenge yourself and dream big!
