In 1950, during the height of the search for uranium, Kenneth G. White
built his first geiger counter in the basement of his furniture store in Sweet
Home, Oregon. Soon, word spread about Ken’s new invention and he was building
them for customers far and wide. As the demand for uranium quieted, Ken turned
his focus to metal detectors for finding gold and treasure. His first detector was a great
success and marked the beginning of the metal detector industry.
Today, the tradition of quality, hand-built metal detectors is still going strong under
the leadership of President Kenneth R. White. Still hand built on the banks of the
Santiam River in Sweet Home, Oregon, White’s continues to provide easy-to-use,
deep-detecting metal detectors - for the hobbyist and the professional alike. The
philosophy that guided Ken White’s vision over sixty years ago remains the hallmark

Are most metal detectors basically the same?
How deep do metal detectors detect?
THERE ARE FIVE BASIC TYPES OF METAL DETECTORS:
General Purpose: Coin/Relic/Treasure | Gold Prospecting | Underwater and Salt
Beach | Cache Hunting/Deep Searching | Industrial and Security
THIS IS THE MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION and unfortunately the most
difficult to answer! Most general purpose models are factory equipped to search for
coin and jewelry sized metals at depths of up to 12 inches, depending on metal size
and alloy. To detect beyond 12 inches requires larger accessory search coils and/or
to give up attempts to eliminate trash metals.
SOME METAL DETECTORS are designed specifically for one type of
searching. For example, gold prospecting detectors are designed to be
extremely sensitive to small pieces of gold. General purpose models are
typically not designed to detect metals as small as a grain of rice but do offer
better trash metal rejection compared to prospecting models.

ALWAYS REMEMBER TO:
P Obtain permission before you detect or dig, even on public lands. Regulations
vary by state, so it’s always best to double-check first.
P Leave the area like you’ve never been there. A properly dug “plug” can quickly
be turned back over and tamped down, with little sign a hole was dug.
