Camp Twin Lakes Gears Up for Summer
The weather is warming. Flowers are
blooming. Spring has arrived! Here at
Camp Twin Lakes, we are getting ready
for another fun-filled, action-packed summer. From May through August, Camp
Twin Lakes will welcome 14 camp partner
groups for its 14th summer season. To prepare, camp staff and volunteers have been
working hard since November– sprucing
up the facilities, hiring staff and volunteers
and updating equipment and programs.
Returning campers and volunteers will
notice several new additions to Camp. Our
new Partners Gate, an attractive archway
constructed of wood and stone, now frames
the entrance gate. Dedicated to Partners
Card volunteers and founder Bonnie Harris, the gate will include a plaque honoring each of the Partners Card committee
chairs.
Also new for the 2006 season, the Alex
Levitt Pavilion provides poolside shade,
so campers can take a break from the sun
for some relaxation or games. The pavilion honors former Camp Sunshine camper
Alex Levitt, who touched many lives at
Camp Twin Lakes and beyond before he
passed away in June of 2004 after a long
battle with cancer. The pavilion is a small
way of honoring Alex’s memory and continuing his legacy at a place that was very
special to him.
Our equestrian program is a camper favorite. With the addition of our new covered riding ring, the Experian Arena, even
more campers will be able to experience
the joys and challenges of horseback riding. Named after Experian for the lead
gift from the Fred M. Roddy Foundation
and the Ida A. Ryan Charitable Trust, the
new covered ring will extend the time the
equestrian program is available to campers by providing shelter during rainy days
and shade during the hottest part of the day,
when many campers, due to their medical
conditions, must avoid extreme heat and
harsh sunshine.

From the Executive Director
What a wonderful and exciting time to be a part of Camp Twin
Lakes! It is a privilege and honor for me to lead an organization
that has made such an enormous impact on children and adults
throughout Georgia. It is an awesome responsibility to see to it
that Camp Twin Lakes continues to provide the quality facilities
and programming and meaningful experiences it has become appreciated for.
Yet the challenge does not stop there. Our Board of Directors has
communicated loud and clear that Camp Twin Lakes has the potential to make an even greater difference in our community. Our foundation is strong. We
have a stellar Board of Directors, a respected reputation throughout the state and strong
financial and human resources. We are clearly perched to further our impact, and I view
my role as a guide to lead Camp Twin Lakes into the future.
Over the next six months, Camp Twin Lakes will work towards envisioning our direction for the future. We will not embark on this planning process alone, as we plan to engage a broad group of our stakeholders in this process. This will include our Board members, professionals and volunteers from our partner camps, our staff, financial supporters,
potential new partners, parents and individuals who have been a part of our programs. I
see the key ingredient in this first step being creative, out-of-the-box thinking. There are
so many ways that Camp Twin Lakes can increase its positive impact on its community. I
will look forward to sharing with you the priorities we choose.
Looking to the long term has not hindered plans for this year. We are preparing for what
should be our biggest season ever. Camp Kudzu, our camp partner for children with diabetes, is returning to Camp Twin Lakes after an absence. We look forward to welcoming
them back, along with all our camp partners, for an amazing summer season.
In addition, we have several new programs for 2006. In the spring, we will host two
programs for refugee youth in conjunction with our new partners, Refugee Resettlement
and Immigration Service of Atlanta and International Rescue Services. Elementary school
students and teens, primarily from Somalia and Liberia, will attend day and overnight
camps at Camp Twin Lakes during their spring break. In addition, we will host our first
open house this spring for all of our camp partner families. This fall, Camp Twin Lakes
will hold a teen leadership summit inviting teens from all of our partner groups to spend
an exclusive weekend at camp. It is a busy season ahead and an important time in Camp
Twin Lakes’ evolution. I feel blessed to be a part of it.

A Dance, Bike Ride and Home Tour: Camp Twin Lakes Adds
New Fundraising Events in 2006
Help support Camp Twin Lakes in 2006 by attending one of our brand new fundraisers:
• Camp Twin Lakes’ Junior Board will host the first annual Camp Dance “Deja Zoo” at
Zoo Atlanta on May 6, 2006. Geared towards young professionals in Atlanta, this event will
feature animal viewings, live music, dancing, camp-style finger foods and cocktails.
• The Taco Mac and 790 “The Zone” Spin for Kids benefiting Camp Twin Lakes and its
partners will take place on November 12. The bike ride will include 5-miles, 25-mile, 50-mile
and century courses, all beginning and ending at camp. For information on registering for

• Camp Twin Lakes has been chosen as the beneficiary of the Second Annual Atlanta Magazine Dream Home Tour. Running Thursday through Sunday for four weeks during the fall
(see calendar for dates), the event offers an opportunity to get “beyond the gates” in one of
Buckhead’s must exclusive neighborhoods and tour an exquisitely built home showcasing
the talents of Atlanta’s top interior designers.

CTL Lends a Hand to
Camp High Five
After three years of continued growth, Camp
High Five, our partner camp group for children
who are HIV affected, found a need to enhance
its infrastructure. As a result, in 2006 Camp
Twin Lakes has taken on a new role with Camp
High Five.
Our staff is working more closely with High
Five to help them fill their staffing and volunteer needs and assist in their program direction.
Jaime Swindle, special events manager and
volunteer coordinator for Camp Twin Lakes, is
overseeing recruitment and placement of volunteers for the weeklong session, while Camp
Twin Lakes’ program director Josh Sweat will
act as Camp Director for High Five.

What better way is there to spend a Tuesday evening than
sampling food from more than 60 of Atlanta’s best restaurants,
socializing with friends and raising money for a worthy cause?
Absolutely none! More than 2500 attendees turned out for Atlanta
Magazine’s 18th Annual Best of Atlanta Party on February 7, 2006
at the Cobb Galleria Centre to enjoy everything from chocolate
fondue to sushi to Churrascaria style beef.
Through sponsorships, ticket sales, a silent auction and balloon
raffle, the event raised a record net $160,000 for Camp Twin
Lakes. Raising $15,000 more than last year, the 2005 party was
our most successful Best of Atlanta yet. Thanks to BellSouth,
Best of Atlanta Title Sponsor and Atlanta Magazine for their
continued support of Camp Twin Lakes.

Eleanor and William Effinger, Lila and Doug Hertz, Jan and

From Oct. 29- Nov. 5, 2005, Atlanta metro retailers were abuzz with patrons lining up
to use their Camp Twin Lakes Partners Card. By purchasing the $50 Partners Card,
donors were able to save 20% at more than 430 stores throughout the Atlanta area and,
in turn, help send kids to Camp Twin Lakes.
Last year’s Partners Card campaign raised approximately $310,000. A team of more
than 100 volunteers, together with 180 retail stores and our Board and Junior Board,
sold approximately 4200 cards. Partners Card owes much of its success to the dedicated
Partners Card chair Elizabeth Richards and co-chair Renee Goff for their leadership
and innovative ideas.
“Partners Card is a wonderful way for Camp Twin Lakes to get its name out in the
community,” said Elizabeth Richards, 2005 Chair. “It is a unique fundraiser, and quite
fun to be involved in. I have worked on the committee since its beginning and was
thrilled to be able to chair it.”
Camp Twin Lakes Board member Anne Hipp, who has volunteered with Partners
Card since 2000, was once again the top selling volunteer, even surpassing her own
record by selling 320 cards. Card sales by retail stores increased significantly over past
years with the Container Store Buckhead and first-time Partners Card seller Mark Shale
as the top selling retailers.
The Coca-Cola Company was Title Sponsor, the Atlanta Journal Constitution was the
Presenting Sponsor and Troncalli was Angel Sponsor.
The 2006 Partners Card campaign is scheduled for Oct. 28 – Nov. 5, 2006. Renee
Goff has been named Chair and Kim Berry will serve as co-chair.
Entering its ninth year in 2006, the Partners Card program is Camp Twin Lakes’

Finish Line Youth Foundation Helps Send Kids to Camp
In 2005, the Finish Line Youth Foundation presented Camp Twin Lakes with a
$2,500 grant in support of camperships.
Chili Cook-Off Contributes to Camp
The 26th Annual Great Miller Lite Chili Cook-Off, held October 1, 2005 at Stone
Mountain Park raised $41,000 for Camp Twin Lakes. Attendees enjoyed a chili judging
contest, chili samples, a children’s area, vendors and several tribute bands performing
music by Aerosmith, The Doors, Led Zepplin, Van Halen and U2. Thanks to United
Distributors for selecting Camp Twin Lakes as the beneficiary. Join us for the 2006
Chili Cook-Off on September 30, 2006 at Stone Mountain Park. It’s fun for the whole
family!

$25,000 To Camp Twin Lakes
HomeLife Communities Group, Atlanta’s second-largest
builder of single-family homes, presented Camp Twin Lakes
with a $25,000 check at the end of 2005. The donation was made
jointly on behalf of HomeLife and the company’s founder and
CEO, Jon Been and his family, including his wife Susan, son
Wilson and daughter Katherine. Homelife employees also made
contributions, bringing the total donation to more than $26,000.
Bass Pro Shop has signed on to sponsor a new fishing program for the 2006 camp
season. Bass Pro Shop will provide Camp Twin Lakes with 20 reels from its February
“Reel Trade In Promotion” along with additional fishing equipment and training for the
Camp Twin Lakes program staff. Now all of Camp Twin Lakes’ partner camp groups
will be able to enjoy this camp favorite.
CIBC World Markets Sponsors Lake Activities
Camp Twin Lakes recently received a $20,000 donation from CIBC World Markets
to sponsor the Upper Lake Program for 2006 and all lake activities.
SAP Sponsors Nature Studies Program
Camp Twin Lakes thanks SAP for their donation of $5,000 to sponsor the 2005 Nature
Studies Program.

Wesley Bomar has something special
to look forward to this summer.
Like many other children across Georgia, 10-year-old
Wesley Bomar has something special to look forward to
this summer – a week at Camp Twin Lakes. Last year
was Wesley’s first year with Camp Wannaklot, Camp
Twin Lakes’ partner camp for children with hemophilia
and other inherited blood disorders. As he puts it, camp
was “one of the best things ever,” and he can’t wait to
go back!
While at camp, Wesley had a chance to make friends
with other children who face the same challenges as he
does. Wesley has severe hemophilia A, an inherited disorder of the blood-clotting system. He lacks enough of
certain proteins in his blood that help the blood to clot.
In order to treat his condition, Wesley has been on prophylactic factor VIII therapy since age two. He had a
port-a-cath for his infusion for five years, but now he
receives intravenous sticks every other day.
At camp, Wesley was able to focus on other things
besides his treatment like new friends and fun activities.
“I like archery because I’m good at, and boating because
you can splash people,” said Wesley.

His parents, Adam and Elizabeth Bomar, have enjoyed
the learning, fellowship and independence that Camp
Twin Lakes and Camp Wannaklot provide for their son.
“Camp gives Wesley something to look forward to this
summer. He talked about his friends and the activities
for weeks afterwards,” said Adam Bomar. The Bomars
hope his time at camp this year will give Wesley the
self-confidence to infuse his own treatments.
Wesley’s advice for first-time Twin Lakes campers:
“Camp is very fun. Remember there are people there to
take care of your medicine.”

Suzanne Barrow, her passion
for volunteering began with
a New Year’s resolution. “I
wanted to give back to the
community and meet other
people who shared the same desire to make our community a happier
place,” said Suzanne. Since making that resolution, Suzanne has volunteered with a number of organizations in Atlanta, and last year she worked
the Balloon Raffle Booth at the Best of Atlanta party. Suzanne was later
asked to join the Junior Board. So, what drew Suzanne to volunteer for
Camp Twin Lakes? “The commitment to the children we send to camp.
Camp Twin Lakes funds seventy percent of each camper’s tuition to attend camp.” Suzanne was impressed with the fact that Camp Twin Lakes
spends 85% of its money raised directly on programming.
This year, in addition to serving on the Junior Board, Suzanne served
as the Volunteer Chair for the Best of Atlanta party. Suzanne was responsible for placing more than 100 volunteers in various areas of need
throughout the event. This was no small task. Suzanne had to ensure that
volunteers were assigned to the areas and shifts they requested. Suzanne’s
hard work paid off – each area was adequately covered and the volunteers
had a great time helping out.
“Serving on the Junior Board has been a very rewarding experience.
I look forward to our new signature fundraiser, the Camp Dance, and to
many more years of working with Camp Twin Lakes”

All in a Day’s Work
Just how long does it take to paint 24 cabins and build 40 new benches
and picnic tables for the upcoming camp season? With a crew of 220
sales representatives from DIAGEO-Guiness USA, it’s less than a day’s
work.
On November 16, as a part of their national sales meeting, employees
of premium drink distributor DIAGEO, arrived at Camp Twin Lakes
armed with paint brushes and tools and ready to work. Inspired by a
welcome presentation by Camp Twin Lakes founder Doug Hertz, men
and women from all over the country climbed atop ladders, wielded nail
guns and had a lot of fun in the process.
Not only did DIAGEO provide this massive labor force for this much
needed project, they also supplied the materials, including paint, paint
brushes and rollers and lumber. Together with labor and supplies, this
project would have cost Camp Twin Lakes more than $40,000 to complete. Special thanks to David Eickholt, president, Guiness USA, his
assistant Marta Unker, Seth Herman,local distrubution manger, Diageo
with DIAGEO-Guiness USA and our founder, Doug Hertz, for setting
up this wonderful day at Camp Twin Lakes.
Camp Twin Lakes Ceramic Tile Wall Program
Consider becoming a permanent part of the Camp Twin Lakes’ Klaus Family Welcome Center with the purchase of a ceramic tile. The purchased
tile will be engraved with a personal message and will be interspersed among colorful tiles made by Camp Twin Lakes campers. Donors will
receive a certificate for each tile purchased which may be given to others as a gift certificate or presentation. The tiles can be given as birthday
gifts, memorials and holiday gifts.
