Wednesday “This is Your Life – Vette Kell” with Bruce Smith - rsvp SEP 16 In the Surround Sound Theater 3-4 pm MAC Chair, Bruce Smith interviews long-time Garlands member, Vette Kell. Vette was born in 1915 and will be 100 years young on October 17th. Vette was raised in Marengo, IA. As a young man, he became proficient on the saxophone and clarinet, and then formed his own band where he performed all over the Midwest. He relates the story where his band would follow the band of Lawrence Welk to do a one week stands at the same venue(s). Vette met his wife, Alice, at the University of Iowa where both were students and Vette was a law student. He enlisted in the Navy during WWII. As an officer on the destroyer USS Stormes, his ship was involved in the battle for Okinawa in 1945. Vette returned home to raise his family and established a law practice which he conducted for many years in Woodstock, IL. Come learn more about Vette. WWII Video with Dick Ash - rsvp Wednesday, September 30, 2pm in the SST Dick Ash has a unique video of the action of Navy Air Group VF88 aboard the Air Craft Carrier “Yorktown” off the coast of Japan during the final days of World War II. The action was photographed by a pilot in VF88 who took an 8mm camera with him in the cockpit of his “Hellcat” while on his missions. The VF88 fought the last dog fight of WWII. Several pilots were lost in that encounter. Lt. Maury Proctor was a participant and survived. He filmed and narrated this video. This is real. It is not a Hollywood production and lasts 70 minutes. Either natural or synthetic hairs are good. -A watercolor pad, the best is the heaviest ‘lb’ weight (thickness). -A BLOCKED pad is sealed on the sides all around the pad, these are superior as they control the wrinkling of the paper without stretching the paper which would take up our entire class time. A blocked pad is not essential but heavy weight watercolor paper is required for good results. -And, a plain pencil and eraser. Learn watercolor techniques with nature as our subject matter. Mended Hearts is an organization which offers help, support and encouragement to heart disease patients and their families. All people coping with heart disease along with their families and/ or caregivers are welcome. This organization is also looking for volunteers who can help those currently dealing with a cardiac event - survivors of cardiac events or surgeries are especially appreciated! Please call Terry at *41 to schedule your 15-minute assessment. 11 BulletinBOARD CUZ WE CARE COMMITTEE The newly formed Cuz We Care Committee (CWC) has met and defined procedures to enable us to give cheer and assistance to those members who find themselves in the hospital, at Prairie View (in Skilled Nursing or in Assisted Living) or have returned home after a stint at these places. With coordination by Jill Lund, and Wellness Nurses Annette and Razia, Cheer List information will be kept updated, given to CWC and posted in the Resource Center. This means that all members will have current information regarding those who have indicated they would welcome cards, calls and/or visits when ill. Our nurses make the initial contact and CWC will follow through with cards, visits and whatever the member has indicated would be appreciated. CWC will also offer caring company to those returning home from an illness or surgery. If you are aware of someone in this category, please let a CWC Committee member know. Meet in the lobby. 15 PLEASE Welcome Carm Mistretta Residence 3118 Carm moved to her Garland’s apartment on June 9, 2015. She lived in Glenview for 20 years, as well as, the south and north sides of Chicago. She grew up on the near west side. Carm’s husband was a Chicago policeman, and Carm stayed home raising their children. The couple had to live in the city as required by his job. He passed away in 1995. Together, they have two sons and five grandchildren. Going to the movies is fun for Carm, as well as going out to lunch and dinner with friends. She enjoys plays and travel. A highlight for her was going to Washington DC for three days with her son on the Fourth of July last year. Carm exercises regularly for her health, so please say hello to her up in the Fitness Center. Terry Herdrich Residence 2124 Terry and her husband Dick moved to The Garlands the second day of June, 2015. They lived in the sunny Tampa Bay area for fifteen years and maintained a summer home in Schaumburg, IL consecutively. They lived in Inverness for 12 or 13 years before retiring to Florida so that they could enjoy playing golf more often, although they also belonged to Biltmore when they lived in Inverness. Dick was 21 years old and Terry was 19 years old when they wed back in 1949. She met Dick through her brother. Terry’s brother actually asked Dick if he would take his sister, Terry to her high school prom. Dick said yes and that started a relationship that resulted in a 66 year marriage until Dick passed away suddenly in June of 2015. Terry went to Immaculata High School in Chicago and attended Mundelein College for one year and Loyola University until she wed Dick. Terry actually worked in Dick’s plastic’s company that specialized in making the plastic coating that goes over credit cards. Terry has 7 children, 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Terry enjoyed tennis, skiing, bowling and golfing as well as entertaining business associates at dinner. Now she likes to read, and watch TV and movies on Netflix. She also attends plays.
