Featured in the classic film Endless
Summer, the Wedge, despite its serene
appearance, is an area well known for
generating dangerous ocean swells.
When the waves are up, even the
most skilled surfers and swimmers
practice extreme caution.

Along Ocean Boulevard, in the community of Corona del Mar, Inspiration Point boasts sweeping views of
Newport Bay and Catalina Island. This
is one of the area’s most popular spots
for watching the sunset. The breathtaking views are often enhanced by
sailing ships, gliding gulls, and distant
migrating whales.

Wildlife abounds along the shores of
Newport Beach. Here, a great blue

approximately 200 different species
of birds can be spotted around Upper
Newport Bay.

A damaged surfboard is a testament
to this area’s powerful breakers. From
May to October, the well-known cautionary Blackball Flag—a black circle
on a yellow field—is displayed during periods of extremely hazardous
conditions. When the flag is visible, no
surfing is allowed at the Wedge.
Artfully sculpted by wind and water,
a massive rock formation frames the
blue horizon at Little Corona Beach.
A steep, paved path from atop the
bluff leads to a small, protected cove
where tide pools thriving with crabs,
sea urchins, and other tiny marine life,
can be explored in and around the
jagged rocks.

With great hotels, inns, shopping,

The tide ebbs and flows, mixing salt
and fresh water, while producing a rich
ecosystem that attracts an abundance
of wildlife. The Upper Newport Bay

Nature Preserve include nearly 1,000
acres, making this one of the largest
estuaries in Southern California.

Low tide uncovers a bevy of sea life,
providing a vital food supply for the
nearly 35,000 migrating birds that
occupy the Upper Newport Nature

hikers, and natural science enthusiasts
come to experience the beauty of this
extraordinary place each year. The

The Upper Newport Bay Nature
Preserve, known otherwise to locals
as “The Back Bay,” has a 10.5-mile trail
that loops around the park’s perimeter. The trek is a unique educational
adventure, with a variety of plants,
animals and birds, as well as many scenic points of interest along the way.

In 1975, Newport Beach’s Upper Bay
became an ecological reserve. Orange
County acquired an additional 140
acres of wilderness surrounding the
bay in 1989 that would become the
Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve.
Together, they provide a pristine habitat for wildlife and native plants like
this coastal prickly pear.
98
California thistle is easily identified
by its brilliant purple crowns. Native
plants play an important role in the
region’s ecosystem. They provide the
proper food and shelter for the animals that thrive here. Volunteers for
the California Coastal Commission’s
restoration program replenish the
wetlands to help ensure their survival.
