Upgrades have been completed in many towns that will allow customers to upgrade to new super-fast internet upload and download speeds. Packages with speeds up to 30 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload are now available. Distance limitations apply, so call to see what speeds are available at your location. Most Nemont customers are on the slowest speed available, but many can upgrade to higher speeds. This will provide a much more pleasant browsing experience and improve business productivity. Anyone who uses streaming video sites (such as Netflix, YouTube, and Hulu) or video calling (like 2 Skype) should have at least the 6 Mbps package in order to avoid buffering and lost connections. See technical requirements of the site you use for specific information. Households with multiple computers, gaming systems, tablets and other devices, as well as businesses with multiple workstations would benefit from a 10 Mbps connection. Dr. McAllister, DVM, is better known in the Glasgow and surrounding area as Steve and Vonnie Pattison’s daughter, Chelsie. Chelsie grew up in Valley County on her great-grandparents homestead. The Glasgow High School graduate, class of 2004, pursued her love of horses through her years in 4-H and then by attending Montana State University. Chelsie furthered her education by attending the veterinary school at Colorado State University in Colorado Springs (CSU), CO. While attending school in Bozeman, she worked with Tennessee Walking horses which turned into a yearround job for her. At that time, she began thinking of working back east, strictly with horses. This thought in mind, she went to Virginia, Kentucky, Texas and Florida with high-end performance horses. After finding out that she didn’t enjoy working with the people, she decided she would rather be back home in Montana. This past year she purchased the Valley Vet clinic from Dr. John Brown and has moved home to start a mixed large and small animal practice. are my number one love,” “ Horses McAllister said, “but I really like working with cattle and small animals too. ” Above: Dr. McAllister is performing a routine check up which will enable this horse to cross state lines for competition. The practice currently has ultrasound capabilities but Dr. McAllister is also adding a new digital x-ray machine. She will now be able to quickly send these digital images to assisting hospitals or veterinarians over high speed Internet from Nemont. The fast connection also allows Chelsie to take advantage of online real-time chatting with board certified veterinarian consultants when difficult cases arise. Dr. Brown has been available to help make the transition go smoothly and also to assist during this busy time of year. He will also be here this fall to assist with the preg checking and in the spring during the calving season. Dr. Brown started the Valley Vet Clinic in 1979 and wants this transition for Dr. McAllister to be a success. Dr. McAllister is also planning to offer acupuncture as part of her treatment options for pain and inflammation in large and small animals alike. During her travels in the horse world, she found that acupuncture is widely used in pain therapy. “Acupuncture and chiropractic are used extensively back east,” she said, “you have to see it once or twice and see the positive results to make a believer out of you.” She took an accredited course in acupuncture while attending CSU and is now certified in the trade. She claims it is very medically sound and has nothing to do with the popular thought of “chi” or energy. Acupuncture needles stimulate the nerves as they travel through the body, but westerners push to separate this from the herbalists. There is two distinct thoughts presented and she stated that “we do not play well together!” McAllister feels that acupuncture should only be done by vets with a working knowledge of the anatomy and neurophysiology of the animal, as it targets the specific nerves. She has used it to treat cats, dogs, rabbits, sheep, goats, alpacas, cattle and even rodeo bulls, but as stated earlier, her favorite subject is horses. “Horses show you so much,” she said, “Some hate it; some love it and some go to sleep.” McAllister met her husband, Chase, while working at the walking horse ranch in Bozeman. The Fort Benton, MT native also attended CSU, and now has a Ph.D. in quantitative physics. He is currently writing computer programs to generate breed statistics for cattle—“baseball cards for cows,” she calls them. He develops the expected progeny differences (EDPs) touted by associations like Angus breeders. He hopes to do independent contract work from their home in Glasgow, such as developing statistic and records for individual herds. We welcome both of them back to Northeastern Montana and wish them great success in their endeavors. 5 Network Upgrade Community Calendar In our effort to provide the best possible wireless experience, Nemont has invested in a new cellular network and is currently installing equipment. Nemont Tech Tip You may ask...What is a QR code? Don’t worry, before I started researching this topic, I had no idea either. A QR code (Quick Response Code) is a two-dimensional bar code, also knows as a matrix code, which can include text, links or other information that can be scanned and read by smartphones. This means that you can scan a code using the camera on your mobile device and be delivered directly to a specific web page. You may have already seen QR codes on advertisements, billboards, web pages, product labels or even business cards. The code is a shortcut to a website that contains product information, reviews or maps. Try these QR codes To take advantage of these QR codes, you first need to download an application to recognize them. The following instructions work on all Android Smartphones offered by Nemont. • Establish a data connection (either mobile network or Wi-Fi.) • Launch the Android Market (you must have a Gmail account to log in.) • Search for and download a QR code reader app. Google Goggles, Barcode Scanner and QRdroid all are free and work great, but you may find another you like better. • Launch the downloaded app and scan the selected QR Code by aiming your camera at the code until it is centered on your display. Your handset will analyze the code and prompt you with choices or take your directly to the website represented by the code. 2011 Scholarships Awarded continued from page 3...
