A bravado performance from Eva Green
stands out as the highlight alongside
the rippling muscles of Spartan warriors
300: Rise of an
Empire
liberally across the screen.
It follows the plight of the
great Athenian general
Themistocles as he tries to
stem the hideous tide of
Xerxes’ infinite forces.
Vengeance and glory are
the two underlying themes of
the movie. It is the ambitious
drive of the beautiful but
deadly Artemisia portrayed
by Eva Green that pushes
the plot to its climactic
peak, while Themistocles is
trying his best to negotiate
and outmanoeuvre the
Persian navy, with romance
and eroticism interspersed
between vendettas that
complicate things. Derived
from the as-yet-unreleased
Frank Miller graphic novel
Xerxes. Rise of an Empire
is a story that stretches out
in contrast to 300’s more
inward progression. Violence
and brutality are more
explicit this time around.
Apparently, the movie is
out well ahead of the book
and the author affirms that
it is “more complex” than its
predecessor.
The images illustrated
are so rich and amusing,
whereby storytelling
becomes so assured that
most viewers could keep
up without any dialogue.

that will please fans of

ACTING AS BOTH PREQUEL
AND SEQUEL TO THE
ORIGINAL FILM, 300: Rise

before, during and after the
events of the the original. It
starts off with the battle of
Marathon and resolves with
the battle of Salamis, in which
the Greeks triumph over
the invading Persians in the
course of progressing toward
a new democracy. Following
on directly from the events
of the first film, it portrays
the sea battle of Artemisium,
which occurs at the same
time as the land battle of
Thermopylae depicted in
300. Even so, Rise of an

scale than the original, with
its exuberant and terrific
fight scenes, titillating
subtext, as well as copious

A captain does not always roar as
illustrated by Ender, a shy young boy
who outwits aliens and saves the earth.
Ender’s
Game
IN THE WAKE OF AN
ANNIHILATIVE ATTACK ON
EARTH by an alien species
called the Formics, humanity
begins to train gifted children
to become commanders. The
protagonist, Ender Wiggin, is
a 12-year-old loner. Diffident
in nature, he possesses a
shrewd and beautiful mind
that makes him special,
drawing the attention of
Colonel Hyrum Graff and
Major Gwen Anderson. The
thematic concern of this sci-fi
flick spreads over genocide,
power struggle, manipulation
and child soldiers. Although
the film is based on the novel
of the same name written by
Orson Scott Card in 1985, the
issues raised are still relevant
to today’s society. This
immediately involves us and
renders the movie largely
captivating.
The movie adaptation
is rather straightforward,
very faithful to the book.
Dialogues are mostly
original while paraphrasing
sections of the book.
Although a lot of incidents
in the book have been
consolidated and simplified,
it does not jeopardise the
overall viewing experience.
Everything is stripped down
to essentials and represented
well, bringing new viewers
up to speed. In the movie,
Ender is softened and more
vulnerable, likely to make him
more likeable as he foregoes
his gifted talent to rescue
mankind later.
The movie features
a plethora of quality of
computer-generated imagery
(CGI). The space battle
sequences are the most
impressive, and students
flying around in zero-gravity
are neat.
Grossing in $61.7 million
in North America and
$63.8 million in other
parts of the world, Ender’s
Game was the top film in
North America during its
opening weekend. A stellar
supporting cast including
Harrison Ford and Oscar
winners Sir Ben Kingsley
and Viola Davis give acting
weight to the young cast.

Where can one seek justice when
in a foreign land where the enemy is the

Vehicle 19
BEING IN THE WRONG
PLACE AT THE WRONG
TIME, Paul Walker stars as
the unfortunate American
citizen Michael Woods
who is tied irrevocably to
an unwished fate. Having
dismounted from a long haul
flight, he unwittingly picks
up the wrong vehicle while
he is on his way to reconcile
with his ex-wife Angie,
now working for the U.S.
Embassy in Johannesburg.
He discovers a handgun
complete with a silencer and
a mobile phone left in his
minivan, and starts receiving
cryptic messages that
contain undertones of threat.
All at once a gagged woman
tumbles out of the luggage
compartment, and invites
a cat-and-mouse chase as
Woods tries to stay alive.
Walker’s acting abilities
are truly put under the
microscope here. Everything
is scrutinised closely with the
entire film being shot inside
and outside the minivan he
is driving. Except for a few
moments, Walker is always
in the frame. It is a great
novelty to shoot from the
inside. It allows the audience
to witness Walker’s complex
and convincing emotions,
as well as his expressions
of desperation during quiet
moments. Sometimes it’s
easy to undermine an actor’s
performance when he is too
charming, but Walker shines
in his role this time with the
facilitation of a close-distance
camera.
Apart from keeping his
camera on his most valuable
asset – Walker, writer-
director Mukunda Michael
Dewil does an excellent job
showing us the ins and outs
of Johannesburg through his
excellent cinematography.
He handles geography
in a sensical manner. The
country’s turbulent sociopolitical history is already a
dramatic backdrop for the
story. The director has a keen
eye on action too. Several
electrifying car chases are
crafted and the audience can
tell that every dollar is on
screen. Grossing in 2.1 million
worldwide, the low-budget
film is considered impressive.
