Technology redefines education

Trying new things can be
a little scary at first, which is normal. However, sometimes overcoming our fears can lead to great
things, especially if you are in
Mrs. Arguelles’ Heritage Spanish
class!
Bremen recently received
a grant that allowed the school
to purchase laptops and iPods for
students to use in class. Lucky for
her students, Arguelles was chosen as the teacher to test how the
technology works in a learning
environment.
There are so many different ways to incorporate new technology into a lesson plan. For example, the students in Arguelles’
Heritage Spanish 1 class recently
used the laptops and iPods in order to finish a “Holidays Around
the World” project.
Arguelles admits that she
was a little hesitant in allowing the
new technologies in her class, but
she took a chance anyway. “I was
stepping out of my comfort zone
doing this because I’m nervous
because they know so much more
than me,” Arguelles said. However, like any great teacher should,
she is also willing to learn from
her students.
Junior Alondra Moreno
stated that she enjoys using the
technology because most teens are
comfortable with it and “it’s easier
than grabbing a book; it’s faster
learning.”
Having the equipment
right in class has encouraged students to become more engaged in
learning. Arguelles stated, “I’m
trying to do different things in
class so they will want to learn
and research things.”

with learning. It’s useful for when
you don’t know something and
you can look it up,” explained junior Angel Garcia.
This seems to be a wonderful learning opportunity for
both teacher and students. With
opportunities such as this, hopefully now more students will use
the Internet to gain knowledge,
and not just to update a Facebook
status!
Seniors: Important deadlines quickly approaching

Seniors, get ready because graduation
is just around the corner. Make sure you have
everything planned and in place as there are
many important dates coming up!
The important dates for seniors start
this spring in April. On Thursday April 4, 2013
there will be a senior assembly in the cafeteria
at 9:00 AM to be sure that everyone is aware of
the important dates and deadlines coming up.
Also, on Monday April 29, 2013 the graduation fees and senior deferred/registration fees
must be paid by 3:00 PM to the main office. It
is important to note that all fees must be paid in
cash only.
May 8 is perhaps one of the most important dates for seniors to pay attention to. On
this day, teachers will be submitting lists of all
possible failures of prospective graduates to
Mr. Sterling by 9:00am. Hopefully you are not
a senior on this list!
Some fun events for seniors are the National Singing Day on May 9th at 8:30AM in
the IMC. Parents are invited to this function.
Parents, however, are NOT invited to
the fun function on Friday May 10, 2013 at
Odyssey Country Club. PROM will be held
on this date from 7:00 P.M - 11:00 P.M. It is
important to note that all guests must arrive
by 8:00 P.M.
On Thursday May 14, 2013 all necessary senior exams will be given out, all books
will be collected, and all debt slips will be
prepared by the teachers. All debt fines must
be turned in to Mrs. Rickord no later than
3:00 P.M. Also, on May 14, all graduates who
have taken a course at an institution other
than District 228 evening school must present a legal transcript of their work indicating
all necessary information to their counselor.
On Wednesday May 15, 2013 a list of
all students who will definitely be considered
“failing” by this point will be given to Mr.
Sterling.
The last day for seniors will be Thursday May 16, 2013 and caps and gowns will
be distributed from 8:00 A.M. - 9:30 A.M. in
the main foyer if all fees are paid off.
The senior picnic will be held from
10:00 A.M. – 1:30 P.M. on May 16 and the
Senior Honors night will be held in the main
gym at 7:00 P.M. Extra graduation tickets will
be given out after honors night.
By Friday May 17, 2013, all prospective graduates debts must be paid by 3:00 PM;
those who have unpaid debts will not be able
to participate in the graduation ceremony.
Finally, on Tuesday May 21, 2013 all
graduates must meet for graduation practice at
9:00 AM. The practice will be held at be at
the Holiday Inn Tinley Park Convention Center on 183rd & Harlem in Tinley Park, IL. A
bus will be provided for those students who do
not have transportation.
The big moment all seniors have been
waiting for will begin at 3:45 at the Tinley
Convention Center as graduates will begin
lining up for the ceremony. Graduation step
off will be at 4:20 and at 4:30 commencement
exercises will take place.
Seniors, pay close attention to the
deadlines as the end of your high school career is almost here!

Drawing in changes for the
Art classes next school year, the
Fine Arts Department will be adding several new single-semester
art courses. Some of the courses
that will be included are Digital
Photography, Graphic Design, and
Ceramics and Sculpture one.
“We want the courses to
be more marketable by students
and allow them to focus more on
what it is they are trying to pursue
in art,” says art teacher Mrs. Reid.
The courses will allow students to
choose from a larger course selection rather than be limited towards
only a few choices.
“I think it will be beneficial for the students who plan on
taking any Art courses next year.
For instance if someone wants to
specifically study sculpting, then
they can sign up just to take that
class as opposed to having to go
through others to do so,” says art
student Esperanza Salgado. Overall, the goal is to make sure every
student has a chance to be successful as well as to build a great educational experience.
Other than the new additional Art courses coming soon,
Mrs. Reid’s Art classes are currently in the process of developing creative pieces of work for the
District Fine Arts Festival as well
as planning to attend the SSC Regional High School Art Show to
view the work of other students.
Moreover, the Art club
has also been contributing its art
work around the school. One of
the biggest projects is the Christopher Abeyta mural the club decided to create in memory of the
fallen soldier. The Art club has
also done previous creative art
work in regards to designing for
school events such as creating the
posters for the Spirit Show Down
and painting the school’s letter, ‘B’
in Conference room 2. The club is
usually known for its artistically
fun face painting for spirit events.
In addition, the Art club
will be having a crafts table in
which students and faculty members will be able to purchase some
of the items designed by the creative handwork of Bremen Art
members.
For many people, the
process of going to college is a
totally new experience. Filing
out a college application may
seem difficult enough, but to
add to that the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid, better known as FAFSA, can seem
overwheming and intimidating.
Since it is not uncommon
for people to be unfamiliar with
the financial aid process and
since a large amount of Bremen’s
population is Spanish-speaking,
Bremen recently hosted a FAFSA assistance seminar in Spanish.
Responsible students and
parents took advantage of the
chance to get extra assistance.
“Well my parents don’t
speak English and I just wanted
them to be able to understand
what FAFSA is and how the process works,” stated senior Vanessa Cortez.
At the seminar Eric Ruiz
of the University of St. Francis
and Spanish teachers Mrs. Arguelles and Ms. Giron all helped
eager parents and students fill
out the FAFSA step-by-step.
The event was made possible through the collaborative
efforts of Arguelles and Ruiz.
Ruiz seems to have a personal
incentive when helping families
with this effort as he was the
first member of his family to attend college.
He feels that presenting
this information to future college students and their families
is very important, which is why
he is so passionate about events
like this one.
Arguelles was extremely
grateful for his participation in
the financial aid night. She was
also inspired by his story.
“I feel that students can
really relate to his story and
hopefully they too can take the
next big step in their lives to go
to college,” she expressed.
It is probably safe to say
that most of the students who
took advantage of the great opportunity to get assistance will
go on to pursue higher education. If one person can do it,
then others can, too.
Be a Brave Step-Up Day gives 8th
graders a taste of high school band

The Bremen Band hosted
the annual “Be a Brave Step-Up
Day” on Jan. 11. This event was
hosted by Bremen’s band director, Mr. Ben Salgado.
Mr. Salgado has been
teaching for 12 years and has
been a part of Bremen’s Band
department for 9 years. Even
though running a band is nothing
new to Mr. Salgado, he particularly loves when he can get new
students involved in band.
At the “Be a Brave StepUp Day,” Mr. Salgado was able
to discuss how being part of the
band is not only fun, it has also
allowed the members to feel victory. Salgado has led the Bremen
Braves Marching Band took 2nd
place at Metamora High School
and 4th place at Providence
Catholic High School. The Bremen Band scored these top spots
with this year’s show, “Led Zeppelin.”

not only play their best music for
competition purposes, but enjoy
rocking out with a stellar performance specifically for incoming
Braves. This year, the band performance was showcased in front
of students from Central Park,
Keller, and Kolmar School.
The Drum Major for the
2012 Marching Band season,
Denise Hernandez, exclaimed,
“Well, I thought it was great. The
8th graders came, and checked
us out. They even got a chance to
see the school. I know that they
were really excited to come.”
At step-up day, the eighth
graders not only got to see how
things were run at Bremen, they
even got to have some one-onone time with current Bremen
band members. The incoming
students had lunch with their
band buddy and they got to ask
questions about the school, the
band, and other activities offered
at Bremen.

Life never stops for anyone

Life never stops for anyone.
People come and go as fast as they came.
They never change who they truly are.
Maturity does not mean changing, it means growing up.
It means knowing the difference between good and bad,
but for teens even though they know what is wrong and
right, they don’t know what to choose.
It’s cool or lame, popular or unpopular.
There are many new feelings and emotions that make
them get so confused, over guys, girls, school and even
family.
Problems are everywhere for teens,
even as hard you try to stay away from one,
you’re already in another one.
Teens always want to be cool,
they would do anything to get to the top.
They drink, do drugs, smoke, get in gangs, and even have
sexual relations.
People don’t always pressure someone to do something.
It’s mostly the thirst that they have to be cool.
The wanting and the needing that supposedly makes everyone like you.
Never believe that!
Be yourself and stay confident.
Don’t do something stupid because you think it’s going to
take you to the top, because actually, it’s just going to bring
you down to their level.
Do your best and stay away from the bad influences.
Always keep your head up and never look down.
Cool teens these days are never going to be someone in
the future. They are always going to be around you but
always think straight. Teens only think about now. They
never think about later in life. They don’t think about consequences or what it is going to result in. But they should
before it is too late, before they can’t turn back anymore.
Don’t regret anything, and always think ahead.

Alum returns to inspire, motivate fellow Braves

Recently, Alan Burts, a student who
formally graduated from Bremen High School
in 2004 paid a visit to his proud “Home of
the Braves” where he reunited with familiar
faces. While visiting, Burts was invited to a
few of the science classes in which he spoke
to students about his experience at Bremen as
well as the lessons that prepared him for the
future.
Two of the classes Burts spoke to was
Mr. Stephens’ Human Anatomy class (Honors
and Regular) and Mr. Vivian’s Biology class.
During his speech, Alan mentioned some of
the extracurricular activities he was involved
in throughout school. He also highlighted
his college choice, life accomplishments, and
contributions towards his success.
As a student at Bremen, Alan described
himself to be a smart, well-rounded individual
however, talkative, in which he explained had
gotten him in a bit of trouble sometimes. “I
was a student/athlete while at Bremen. I was
on the honor roll most semesters and I played
basketball for three years and ran cross-country my freshmen year.
I was sort of a chameleon at Bremen; I
had the ability to hang out with the “cool” kids
and the “nerds,” said Burts. Moreover, he was
involved in the former club entitled B.A.C.O
and he mentioned that his favorite subjects
were Chemistry and Physics.
While trying to complete his years in
high school, it was Alan’s excellent support
system at home that made him want to excel
in school.

excited to hear what the spring production would be. The title was
released on Christmas Day, December 25th, 2012 by drama-department director, Mr. Andy Rybarczyk. The cat was let out of the bag

spring play would be Lizzie Borden
of Fall River!
Mr. Rybarczyk has been the
head of the Bremen drama department since 2008. He has directed productions such as Dracula, CSI: Neverland, Aladdin, and much more!

River, a girl named Lizzie is accused of “axing” her father and
stepmother. However, the question

with the tragedy. This play will consist of 2 acts and 15 cast members.

Auditions will be held at 3 p.m.

Drama groups provide
entertainment for all

Everyone has heard of the
drama club, but many people do
not recognize that there are different
branches of drama.
There are two other groups
that are a lot like drama club, but
they also have their differences.
The first group is Bremen’s Speech
Team. The Speech Team is a wonderful and exciting experience that
lets participants show their true colors. By being a part of the Speech
Club, individuals have a handful
of choices like HAD’S (Humorous
duet acting), DDA’S (Dramatic duet
acting), OC’S (Original comedies),
to showcase talents.
Bremen’s Speech Team’s
coach is Mr. Rybarczyk and the assistant coach is Mr. Salgado. Both
Rybarczyk and Salgado help the
team succeed in any way possible.
This team is always looking
for new participants to join.
The other branch of Drama
Club is Group Interpretation. Mr.
Dyke is the coach and is seeking
new talents for next year.
Bremen’s Group Interpretation Club is also a club that is a lot of
fun. This year, Group Interpretation
is doing a comedy skit. The club will
be performing it in March at Bremen
High School.
Group Interpretation members will be inviting various classes
to come and watch the wonderful
performances done by fellow classmates. In Group Interpretation, one
can be free to use improvisation, so
you never know what could happen!

Water Polo

Water Polo is a very intense sport. To be on this district
team, you must work hard and
have a good sense of teamwork.
There is also a great bit of strategy involved when trying to win.
Bremen’s Water Polo
team is a district team. The name
of District 228’s Water Polo Team
is called the Silver Snakes.
The upcoming season will
be challenging, but Seniors Zach
Crim, Elliot Peralta, Quinn Johnson, and Tony Z. (from Oak Forest) will lead the team to victory.
Even the coach foresees a positive
future: “The upcoming season
will be good,” projected Coach
Cappel.
Coach Cappel definitely
sees the strategy of this sport. “If
Elliot Peralta keeps up his defensive intensity and Quinn Johnson
can produce an offense, we should
win a fair amount of games this
year,” states Cappel.
Varsity team member Elliot Peralta knows that Water
Polo is a rough sport and much be
played with gusto. “Aim for the
goalie’s face,” says Peralta.
So, what does it truly
means to be a Silver Snake Water
Polo member? Perhaps attending a meet can help you see the
strategy and strength required to
compete in this sport!

Poms debuts as IHSA event

The Poms dance team
started the season with a big twist
now being in IHSA. This has been
their first year in IHSA. Although
the competition is harder than ever
now they give it their all when they
get out on that dance floor.
This year’s team captains for
the Bremen Braves Poms Dance
Team are seniors, Kelly Regan and
Gina Pusateri and junior, Alexis
Alzona.
The captains have all worked
hard to have an amazing team this
year. Sticking to their rules and
goals has helped them be great
team leaders. “The job can be very
stressful, but it’s all worth it in the
end” said Alzona.
“So far this year has been
a great experience” said Alzona).
The girls have worked so hard toward accomplishing that goal of
qualifying for state and making
their school and coaches proud.
Preparing for a competition takes
a lot of practice.
The weeks of a competition the girls have hard practices
and all come together to dance
as one. There are 3 dance categories including Pom, Hip-Hop, and
Lyrical. All three dances are all
practiced and cleaned up each and
every day to try and make them
better and better. With all that hard
work, the benefits truly paid off.

at the state competition at the recent event held at Bremen High
School on Sunday, February 3. It
seemed as if every girl was on top
of their game as the performances
were fresh and flawless. Each
girl feels they know what it takes
to have a stellar performance and
every Brave capitalized on her
strengths.
“Confidence is the key to
an amazing performance” said senior, Savannah Schofield.
The Bremen Poms teams
qualified in two areas at the completion. It was the Hip-Hop and
Lyrical performances that allowed
them to advance to state together.
These recent performances not
only changed the girls’ lives, but
have also made them all come together having an amazing friendship and a sisterhood.
“One of my favorite things
about this sport is meeting new
people and making new friends”
said Pusateri.
With the season almost
being over the girls are treasuring
each moment especially the seniors with this being there last year
of high school and last year on the
poms dance team.
“Poms has been my life and
has consumed all of my time that I
can’t believe it’s almost over” said
Regan.
The girls have accomplished many things throughout
their season this year are all looking forward to next year with excitement and bigger expectations.

your hardest setting the goals high
and higher for each other.
