Be The Difference
2015 Compendium - Reykjavík
Reykjavík
Reykjavík is the capital and largest city of Iceland. It has a latitude of 64°08’ N, making it the world’s northernmost
capital of a sovereign state and a popular tourist destination. It is located in southwestern Iceland, on the southern
shore of the Faxaflói Bay. With a population of around 120,000 (and over 200,000 in the Capital Region), it is the heart of
Iceland’s cultural, economic and governmental activity.
Reykjavík is believed to be the location of the first permanent settlement in Iceland, which Ingólfur Arnarson is said to
have established in AD 874. Until the 18th century, there was no urban development in the city location. The city was
founded in 1786 as an official trading town and grew steadily over the next decades, as it transformed into a regional
and later national center of commerce, population, and governmental activities. It is among the cleanest, greenest,
and safest cities in the world.
Reykjavík is famous for its weekend nightlife. Icelanders tend to go out late, so bars that look rather quiet can fill up
suddenly - usually after midnight on a weekend. Beer was banned in Iceland until March 1, 1989, but has since become
popular among many Icelanders as their drink of choice. There are over 100 different bars and clubs in Reykjavík; most
of them are located on Laugavegur and its side streets. It is very common for an establishment that is a café before
dinner to turn into a bar in the evening. Closing time is usually around 4:30 am at weekends and 1 am during the week.
The Iceland Airwaves music festival is annually staged in the fall.
The “Culture House” was opened in 1909 and has a number of important exhibits. Originally built to house the
National Library and National Archives and also previously the location of the National Museum and Natural History
Museum, in 2000, it was re-modeled to promote the Icelandic national heritage. Many of Iceland’s

national treasures are on display, such as the Poetic Edda, and the Sagas in their original
manuscripts. There are also changing exhibitions of various topics.

A Note From the President
We feature fashion, art, music, and design, but we’re also here to remind you of the varied beauty and out-of-this-world ideas
that far reach beyond our mundane experiences. We’d like to congratulate our friends Steve Aoki and David Guetta on their
musical accomplishments in 2015. We are in exciting times when big ideas are being presented by unlikely platforms. Gaining
political awareness is the civil rights movement #BlackLivesMatter that does not endorse one presidential candidate, but instead,
continues the fight to rid systematic demise against the African American community.

Golden Cat
Winter/Spring
The African Golden Cat
One of the most elusive cats in the world, the African golden cat is about twice the
size of a domestic cat. Its rounded head is very small in relation to its body size. It is a
heavily built cat, with stocky, long legs, a relatively short tail, and large paws. Body
length usually varies within the range 61 to 101 cm (24 to 40 in). Tail length ranges from
16 to 46 cm (6.3 to 18.1 in), and shoulder height is about 38 to 55 cm (15 to 22 in). The
cat weighs around 5.5 to 16 kg (12 to 35 lb), with males being larger than females.
The African golden cat is able to climb, but hunts primarily on the ground. It mainly
feeds on rodents, but also includes birds, small monkeys, duikers, giant forest hog
piglets, and small antelope in its diet. These cats have also been known to take
domestic poultry and livestock.
The exact population is unknown, but it is assumed to be dwindling in Africa.
These cats live up to 12 years in captivity, but their lifespan in the wild is unknown

The Boss
Nicknamed “The Boss,” Bruce Springsteen, 65, is famously
known for his poetic songs that deal with social and
political issues as well as lengthy and energetic stage
performances (his set list changes every night). His
recording career spans more than forty years, beginning
with 1973’s Columbia Records release Greetings from
Asbury Park, N.J. He has released eighteen studio albums,
garnered twenty Grammy Awards, won an Oscar, has
been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,
was a 2009 recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors
and was named 2013 MusiCares Person of the Year by
The Recording Academy. Springsteen’s newest album
High Hopes (Columbia) was released in January 2014,
which debuted at #1 in the United States and in 9 other
countries.
This marked Springsteen’s historic 11th #1 debut on the
Billboard 200 in the US, and it was his fourth consecutive
chart-topping debut. In the UK, Springsteen has led
the chart 10 times since 1984, and now joins the ranks
of musicians including the Rolling Stones among artists
with 10 #1 UK albums. High Hopes also reached #1 in 30
countries on the iTunes album charts.

“I’m having a real life right now. The difference between humans and
animals is that we think about the future; we are constantly looking forward.
I’m excited to live,” says EDM virtuoso Steve Aoki, 37, who recently released
Neon Future I (including his celebrated Gold-selling single “Delirious
(Boneless)”) and is soon releasing Neon Future II. “I wanna always be
cognizant of what makes me ‘me’ and always try to make my life and all
the life around me better as much as possible.”
Growing up in a white neighborhood (Newport Beach, CA), he was an
outcast surrounded by non-Asian people. “When you are a child, when you
are really young, kids have no filter, so they say what they are accepted
to say. Whatever is accepted in their homes, they are gonna be able to
say it in public. And, that’s when you really see racism dead-on in the face,
which led me to violence and fights,” Aoki looks back on his upbringing.
“But, that made me stronger and have a thicker skin, and they pushed me
away from where all the general kids were playing.”
“My mom would pack onigiri (meaning ‘rice balls’ in Japanese) with bonito
flakes in my lunchbox, and the kids would be like, ‘What the hell are you
eating? This stuff is moving and you’re eating worms!’ (The steam makes
bonito flakes move.) So I would always hide in the corner and eat by
myself,” Aoki recalls. “It’s just not fair. When you are a kid, you just don’t
understand why someone is making you feel different, like, ‘What did I do to
be treated this way?’ I think it should be one of the more important subjects
– racial tolerance and understanding cultural differences. We live more
and more in a multi-cultural world.”

MAGAZINE 27

Eventually, he got into hardcore/punk music (“That was
where all the outcast kids were hanging out”), listening
to the bands like Gorilla Biscuits and Born Against,
playing guitar and singing in bands, and hosting shows
in his apartment. At age 19, he created Dim Mak
Records “to support the same bands that would come
and play in my living room. What was more of an outlet
of expression turned into a business, later on.” As the
business was taking off (i.e. 350,000 physical units sold for
Bloc Party’s Silent Alarm),
), Aoki – who was a businessman/
occasional DJ – gradually established himself as an artist
by “remixing the bands on Dim Mak, and then people
started liking my remixes. Then, I started DJ’ing outside
LA, and the rest is history.”
Since he was playing “Millionaire” by Kelis featuring
André 3000 at that moment, Aoki’s DJ moniker was Kid
Millionaire (other candidate names considered: Mama
Millionaire and Papa Billionaire). “Then I realized that
people kept thinking of that name like, ‘That’s the son of
Rocky Aoki of Benihana, making fun of himself being rich
and sh*t.’ By 2005, I got rid of the name. This was not the
kind of representation I wanted for myself,” says Aoki.
Ironically, though, his father’s passing in 2008 influenced
him to create what would later become Neon Future. “It
was a very heavy, heavy blow to me so I started reading
books on cancer and health. I’ve always had feelings
of regret in what I could’ve done when he was alive – I
could’ve educated him on learning how to change
your body by eating and living healthier. As I was diving
into this kind of stuff, I started reading towards all the
technological development in health and research,”
he explains. “I love science fiction so I started reading
about ideas like singularity. I was like, ‘Wow, this book
is about these science fiction ideas that actually could
be real science and happen in our lifetime.’ And I wrote
the song ‘Singularity’ in 2011, and then started my album
process; I put out Wonderland and then I started working
on Neon Future.. It all came full circle.”

He defines “Neon Future” as a positive outlook on human progress and technology, looking forward
to a bright, colorful utopia (Neon Future I even features the acknowledged futurists like Ray Kurzweil
and Aubrey de Grey). “If you sit in a room with someone you love that’s dying, you don’t think like,
‘Oh, we are gonna have overpopulation issues so just let them die.’ You are not gonna think that way.
You are gonna be like, ‘What can I do to save his/her life? What can we do to enrich our lives?’ We
wanna have happier, healthier, longer lives. Well, everyone. And then, we think about these ideas
of overpopulation and/or a lack of natural resources and things like that,” affirms Aoki, who’s also
supported brain research through his own Steve Aoki Charitable Fund (“I’m raising awareness on a
brain. We all need to understand it more”).
Besides the forthcoming Neon Future II release (“The album’s general feeling is a bit darker and more
emotional”), he’s going to launch the Dim Mak eyewear range (entirely designed by Ksubi co-founder
George Gorrow) as well as the 50-piece PARCO x Dim Mak collection. “I’m going to Japan and
launching the collection in Japan first,” Aoki says of the latter. (Aoki and PARCO released a photo book
EAT SLEEP CAKE REPEAT last year.)
In the next 10 years, while he admits that he’s excited to see some major technological advances
in the field of brain science, he suddenly pauses when asked about his personal goal. After a quick
brainstorming session, however, he shares with a laugh, “I wanna have a kid, two, three, four, a couple
of kids.”

Chanel
West Coast
You might recognize Chanel West Coast as the sharp, sweet, and vivacious blonde from such MTV hit
shows as Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory and Ridiculousness.
Born Chelsea Chanel Dudley, music has always been at the forefront of her life. Growing up, she split
her time living between North Hollywood with her mom and New York City with her father, a local DJ
who would bring his then eight-year-old daughter along with him when he spun at packed nightclubs
throughout the city. “I’ve always been around music, and I knew it’s what I’d do for the rest of my life. I
didn’t have a choice,” she says.
West Coast avidly pursued singing and dancing lessons from a young age. At 17, she launched her first
MySpace Music page in hopes of sharing her personal recordings with the world.
2012 proved to be one of West Coast’s biggest breakthrough years. Multi-platinum recording artist/
Young Money Entertainment founder, Lil Wayne personally invited West Coast to his Miami studio to
play him some of her music. Impressed by what he heard, the budding music impresario immediately
signed West Coast to his popular Young Money label – home of such superstars as Drake and
Nicki Minaj. The first taste of her Young Money affiliation was the irresistible “Karl,” the first single from her
Now You Know mixtape.
Following the success of her mixtape, West Coast continues to release music and other various contents
weekly via her popular web series: West Coast Wednesdays.
She has most recently appeared on Young Money: Rise of an Empire and is currently working on her
debut album (due out early this year) – including her latest track “Miles and Miles.”

Black Wolf
A black wolf is a melanistic colour variant of the grey wolf (Canis lupus). Black
specimens are recorded among red wolves (Canis lupus rufus), but these color
variants are probably extinct. Genetic research from the Stanford University School of
Medicine and the University of California, Los Angeles revealed that wolves with black
pelts owe their distinctive coloration to a mutation which occurred in domestic dogs,
and was carried to wolves through wolf-dog hybridization.

18-year-old Cody Simpson left Atlantic Records back in August and is now in the midst of
working independently on his next album Free. He recently appeared in Mario Testino’s
Instagram “Towel Series” alongside his girlfriend, Gigi Hadid.
“This album is such a liberating experience for me because it’s the first step towards my true self,”
Simpson says of his up-coming album. “It’s my first record basically, it’s my first album ‘technically’ – the
first one that I’ve, as a musician, been able to create from the very first guitar link to the very last mix of
the song.”
Simpson will be playing a series of live shows before the album release, and he will be including new
songs into his performance. “I’m really kind of honest, so I don’t really care about a big release debut
of a song on the radio,” he admits. “I just like to test it live, and I love to ground it out, playing shows and
putting out demos in line first. It’s a more natural experience.”
This album has allowed him to perform in a more “open way.” He has been involved in the entire
production of it, which he describes as being very “hands-on,” and he even took his own photos for
the album.
This new path Simpson has embarked on demonstrates his dedication to his music as well as to his
fans. He says that he hopes to “inspire people” and positively influence “a couple of lives by the end of
the year.”

learned a lot over the past 2 years, so we really
wanted to apply that to our album making process.
It really helped us finding who we were as artists
more,” she further explains.

“Sometimes, I have my moments where I’m not
feeling well but I don’t want to show that I’m not
doing my best because I just want to be like a
strong rock. If you have something that’s a struggle,
you’ll love it anyway because it’s for your dream
and everything,” asserts Hernandez, referring to their
Philadelphia stop of last summer’s tour with Austin
Mahone – where Hernandez was too sick to show
up at the meet and greet (but made it for the show)
and Cabello was rushed into the emergency room
(and couldn’t perform).
Regardless, the 5H girls surely finished last year with
a good note as they performed at the National
Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in December
(“We were able to perform for the President of the
United States and his family. There’s no feeling to
describe it to be part of the history”). Furthermore,
what was even more exciting was their encounter
with Michelle Obama: “When we were first walking
towards her to meet her, the first thing she did
was, she looked at us firsthand and sang, ‘Michelle
Obama. Purse so heavy.’ She was singing our song.”
In addition to the First Lady and Oprah Winfrey, who
are mentioned in their self-empowerment anthem
“BO$$,” the 5H girls’ role models include Beyoncé,
Demi Lovato, Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie and
Taylor Swift. “The music industry is more maledominant but now there are so many incredible
female artists,” she describes. “We females can
accomplish our dreams, and you can build an
empire for yourself and you don’t have to be held
back by any standard of any others.”
Through last year’s #ImABoss campaign with
DoSomething.org, they encouraged the youth to
make signs for their friends that highlight their unique
talents to boost their self-esteem. “It was more for
last year but we still encourage people to empower
one another in general, not just temporarily.
It’s a template for the future and beyond this,”
Hernandez states.
360 MAGAZINE 53
As for their philanthropic work, they have also supported Aéropostale and
DoSomething.org’s Teens for Jeans campaign, the Girl Scouts of the USA,
Goodwill Industries’ Fall Haul Donation Challenge, and truth’s Finish It campaign
(collaborated with Becky G on the anti-smoking song “Left Swipe Dat”).
Additionally, they’ve visited the Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia, Los Angeles
and Colorado. “It’s just so selfless and we are there for them. They obviously
have so much hardship going on in their lives, and in their families’ as well. To
be able to just go there and make little kids smile after all these they’ve been
through is so gratifying,” she elaborates. “I just make sure that I am doing my
best for that person and that I talk to them and make them feel good on more
of a personal, personal level. I really just want to do more charity work and be
more active in that because I feel like, there’s just everybody who needs help,
you know.”
Now, what’s next for Fifth Harmony? “After The Reflection Tour, we’re gonna be
doing a bunch of different performances and more radio shows. I just want us
to be really successful and to just advance and keep growing. Also, it’s really
important to gain respect from other artists. We’ve been working really hard and
people are recognizing us right now. And, definitely, we want to do a world tour,
and hopefully, by that time, we can get a Grammy,” she interrupts herself with a
laugh. “Of course, all the major awards would be incredible.”
According to Hernandez, moreover, Fifth Harmony would like to have a
makeup/clothing line while she personally has “a specific passion for acting. I
also love to bake so I would love to do something really cool with that.”
The 5H girls are having another extremely hectic year, but come on now, let’s
get real: Ally Brooke Hernandez, 21, is the oldest in the group, and she can’t
have any drinking buddy from within. “Right,” she laughs. “No I mean, it’s pretty
cool, I guess. I really love being with them all the time.”

The
Janoskians
Eiko Watanabe
In 2011, The Janoskians (who recently released Would U Love Me - EP) – Beau Brooks, Jai Brooks, Luke
Brooks, Daniel Sahyounie and James Yammouni – immediately became trendy when the group posted
their first “Awkward Train Situations” video on YouTube. As the fan base grew, they continually released
hilarious and disruptive content, gaining over 2 million YouTube subscribers and accruing more than 200
million combined views.
“Jai and I were at a train station after school one day, and we happened to be sitting next to some guy
on a bench who was reading the paper. Jai leaned over and started reading it with him. The guy was
pretty rude and turned away! I caught this all and laughed my a** off,” recalls Beau Brooks. “Jai then
said how funny it would be to get into other people’s business on the train. I said, ‘Yeah, like, awkward
situations on a train.’ We ran home and told our boys and our mom. We knew we had something when
she started laughing about it all.”
Soon after, in 2013, Jay Sean discovered and signed them to his entertainment company, Kamouflage.
“He was on tour in Australia, and one of his producers suggested that he and Jeremy [Skaller] should
check us out. He doesn’t do day-to-day work, but he’s always around and supportive. We see him like
a big bro,” says Brooks of Sean.
Around that time, the Australian boy group moved to Los Angeles to “grow our brand, evolve and take
on new adventures.”
As of now, they’ve been working with Lionsgate on a feature length film of “social disturbance
comedy.” “It’s a partly scripted comedy that takes all the best bits of the Janoskians and tells a good
story at the same time. It’s got our style of pranks, humor and fun. It will be edgy and loud, fast and
probably a bit dangerous. We want you laughing and concerned at the same time,” Brooks describes
with a laugh.
“We just played an arena (The SSE Arena, Wembley) which was one of the goals we set out for
ourselves in 2014 so we nailed that,” Brooks shares. “Next up, we want to do our third world tour, make
the documentary of JanoFest we started, finish our movie with Lionsgate, have a single go to radio, and
continue to make our fans laugh, smile and be proud of us.”

Golden Bear
The California grizzly (Ursus arctos californicus) is an extinct subspecies of the grizzly, the very large North
American brown bear. “Grizzly” refers to the golden and grey tips of its hair.
In California, it was particularly admired for its beauty, size, and strength.
California still has habitat for about 500 grizzlies, and if the North Cascade population recovers and expands,
eventually the grizzly will likely return to California. There are however only about 20 of these bears remaining in
that ecosystem. In 2014, the US Fish and Wildlife Service received a petition to reintroduce the California grizzly.
This reintroduction would be from its very closely related Rocky Mountain grizzly.

Clean Bandit
“So you think electronic music is boring? You think it’s stupid? You think it’s repetitive? Well it is
repetitive.” The opening words to “Mozart’s House,” Clean Bandit’s entrance into the world of dance
music, were very different from your standard dance-floor anthem. But then, so was their path – and so
is their approach to music.
The quartet, formed of three interlocking pairs – two brothers, two childhood friends and a couple –
have kept control over every aspect of their music. And with last year’s release of their debut album,
New Eyes, it’s been all coming to beautiful fruition.
Citing label mates Rudimental and tour partners Disclosure as inspiration, Clean Bandit is the newest
part of an upsurge of British dance music that makes as much sense onstage and in the charts. “They
have given us a lot of confidence, definitely. When we first started, we didn’t know about them. There
was only Basement Jaxx, and they were not really doing anything at the time,” says Neil Amin-Smith.
(The band co-wrote “Extraordinary,” “Rather Be” and “Dust Clears” with Jimmy Napes – the man behind
hits for Disclosure, Naughty Boy and more.)
Unlike their peers, though, Clean Bandit was effectively born on stage. Luke Patterson says, “The thing
that sets us apart is, we’ve always been a band and they’ve always been from the DJ and production
world.”
It’s not just dance music – and it’s not just music. Clean Bandit’s self-written, self-directed videos have
become a fixture of every release. Jack Patterson is the key figure here, having become, in his own
words, “quite good with computer graphics” when working in an architectural visualization studio. “We
see the music video as the product as opposed to the song or the video alone,” he says.
Despite Patterson’s skills with graphics, they’re committed to live action video, too. “Jack is very keen on
making everything real,” says Grace Chatto. “As you can tell from the fear on our faces,” adds AminSmith. Their videos have seen them battered and blown on a cold January day off the Cornish coast
with Lily Cole, dancing on ice, strapped to the roof of a moving car with just a belt as harness, and
driving a giant motorized snake up one of London’s tallest buildings.
Now who says electronic music is boring?

Bebe
Rexha
Emily Mistretta
Bebe Rexha recently released her first five-song EP titled
I Don’t Wanna Grow Up. Her talent as a lyricist has landed
her on co-writing several top hits including Eminem and
Rihanna’s “The Monster.” She reflects on her experience
the first time she ever heard their version of it: “I cried!
It was very exciting for me because when we
wrote that song, there was no expectation
at all. It was kind of a song that we just
wrote and loved. That was the first time
I had ever written a song with other
writers, and after writing the song, we
were so happy and all on the same
page. It was like serendipity, it just
felt so perfect. That feeling,
combined with hearing the song
on the radio with Eminem and
Rihanna, was overwhelming.”
Rexha also co-wrote and sang the chorus of David Guetta’s “Hey Mama.”
“I wrote the song in a session as a ‘pre-chorus,’ which probably took all of 10
minutes. I didn’t expect the song to even become anything, so when I found
out that it was going to be released with Nicki Minaj on it, I was super excited,”
says Rexha. (Rexha wasn’t officially featured when the single came out but now
she is.)
Rexha would like to someday work with Kanye West, Chris Martin,
Imogen Heap, and Lauryn Hill. “When I work with other artists,
it’s like a marriage that’s 50/50 where you both have to put in
the same energy. You are creating a child through words and
music. A lot of times, especially on the big songs that people
have heard of mine where I’ve collaborated or written on,
I’ve never actually been in the room with the other artist.
It was always a song for myself or just a song that I had
written on my own that somehow got to the artist and
became this big song.”
Rexha’s music video “I’m Gonna Show You Crazy,”
directed by Hannah Lux Davis, is very empowering
as she comes to being herself through her resistance
to conforming to what other people want her to
be: “It’s a song to myself where I tell me, ‘I’m Gonna
Show You (Bebe) Crazy,’ like, what am I scared of?
It’s a song about accepting myself and being
unapologetically me in the face of fear.”
“Moonshine” – as her fans call her – is
going to have a very busy schedule
ahead of her, including the Vans
Warped Tour. “My plan for the
summer is racking up my sky and
tour bus miles,” she shares.

“I was 14 when I was like, what they call ‘a
bedroom DJ’ – I was training every day after school
and I was sometimes playing for parties or for my
friends,” recalls two-time Grammy winner David
Guetta, who has sold over 8 million albums and 44
million tracks worldwide.
At age 17, Guetta got the first DJ job
as a professional – in a gay club (he
is straight). “I did the test in a straight
club, and the club owner was like,
‘Wow, the music you play would
be perfect for a gay club,’” Guetta
looks back. “At that time, it sounded
like, not the best news to me but
actually it’s been the best news
because, thanks to that, I started
to play house music and it really
changed my life.”
82
360 MAGAZINE
His sixth studio album Listen (including the latest
chart-topping single “Hey Mama” featuring Nicki
Minaj, Bebe Rexha and Afrojack) came out in
November last year – after some of his personal
struggles were highly publicized. And, this album is,
Guetta says, the most personal/introspective record
of his career (i.e. emotionally vulnerable tunes like
“Dangerous” feat. Sam Martin and “What I Did for
Love” feat. Emeli Sandé). “When you make music,
obviously you can only give it the feeling that
you have at that moment,” states Guetta. “I’m a
very positive and happy person; there was just a
moment that was a little difficult in my life, so the
album is a little more melancholic than my usual
work but it’s still a DJ album and a celebrationparty-happy album but there’s a little bit more
emotional side of me.”
When asked if there’s been any change in his
life since the album release, he quickly responds,
“Everything is fine, so that’s what I’m gonna do – I’m
gonna make party records now.”
He’s now working on new music that will be
released via Jack Back Records, a label Guetta
created in 2012. “Now that my album (Listen) is out,
all the music that I’m working on right now is very,
very electronic and not ‘hits,’ you know,” he laughs.
“So, it’s a little more experimental.”
Guetta has released songs like “Shot Me Down
(feat. Skylar Grey)” and “Bad (feat. Showtek and
Vassy)” on the label.
360 MAGAZINE 83
“Jack Back is more of a label that I use for myself when I
wanna release tracks that are not commercial enough
to be on a mainstream label. I wanna be able to release,
also, strictly electronic records from me or from people
that I like. I don’t have a big expectation for the label,”
Guetta adds. “It’s not trying to be the next Universal
Records, you know. I’m not trying to make money with it.”
On another note, this 47-year-old EDM mogul has also championed charitable
causes: He’s constantly supported various non-profit organizations and their
campaigns, including the United Nations, STOMP Out Bullying, (RED), City of
Hope, the American Red Cross, and The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis
and Malaria.
So what’s behind his strong philanthropic passion? “Oh, I wouldn’t call it a
passion, and nothing is behind that,” he answers with a laugh.
“I have had the opportunity to work with the UN and with
UNICEF. This was something I always wanted to do, but
I didn’t really know how to do it. They explained to me
everything that they do, and I really admire those people
so every time I can help them, I’m helping them,” Guetta
explains. “You just choose someone that you trust and
you study what they do, and then you give them money
or you give them your time. That’s what I believe in.”
84
360 MAGAZINE
“We are doing this thing for UNICEF, called #IMAGINE
with Yoko Ono, for the children. We do this song
‘Imagine,’ and it’s based on the last campaign where
we’ve done with the same idea. Big companies are
sponsoring this project, so every time people are
forwarding the song to somebody else, it raises 10
dollars from the sponsoring companies,” he describes.
“People are not even requested to give money but just
requested to share so that it brings awareness. And,
this has raised almost a 100 million, it’s really, really
amazing.”
Other than making people dance through music and supporting the great
causes, here’s the goal that David Guetta has in mind, towards the next 10
years: “Just to be happy, I guess. I wanna be happy. That’s a nice goal –
everybody should have this goal.”

We all love a good MASSAGE, and here’s
just one more reason why. Lymphatic
massage is a special form of massage that
specifically targets the flow of lymph in the
body. It uses a specific amount of pressure
and rhythmic circular movements to stimulate
the lymph, encouraging its movement towards
the heart for the drainage of fluid and waste.
Lymphatic massage has shown in studies to
push up to 78 percent of stagnant lymph back
into circulation. This mobilizes toxins for
clearance, lessening the burden on the
lymphatic system.

REBOUNDING is one of the easiest ways to
pump the lymph. Rebounding is the practice
of jumping on a trampoline (yes, remember
when we did this for fun!?) for ten to thirty
minutes. This passively moves the lymph while
stimulating the circulation of blood throughout
the body. Numerous studies have proven its
efficacy, and have even shown it to improve
muscle tone.

ENZYMES are produced by the body to break
down food substances and to expedite
countless metabolic processes. They are also
utilized by the body to clear toxic-waste
buildup in the lymph and blood, making their
supplementation a key way to improve
lymphatic health. Using proteolytic enzymes
between meals can help to “digest” or
breakdown organic debris in the circulatory
and lymph systems, increasing lymphatic
flow. They also help to ease the burden of
allergy-like compounds, freeing the immune
fractions traveling in the lymph system for
other work.
Incorporating RAW FOODS into the diet is an
easy way to keep the lymphatic system
healthy on an ongoing basis. Raw foods offer
high levels of naturally occurring enzymes
that break down toxic buildups and promote
the clearance of harmful substances in the
body. Eating foods raw, in particular fruits
and vegetables, is also a great way to boost
the water levels in the body. Finally, raw
foods are primarily alkaline, which help
neutralize harmful pathogens, lessening the
burden on the lymph.

Lymph is about 95% water, making water
essential for its health. STAY HYDRATED by
drinking half your weight in ounces of water
a day. Without adequate water, lymphatic
fluid cannot flow properly. And one of the
most common causes of lymph congestion is
dehydration. Water, and only water, can
adequately rehydrate the body, but if you
want to expedite the process, add lemon to
your water. Lemon is an alkaline fruit that
helps to mineralize the body and lymph. Try
sipping on warm lemon water throughout the
day.

“I just want to keep doing what I do until
I feel I’m not connecting anymore. If that
day ever arrives, I’ll stop DJ’ing and just ride
bikes, cook and do the gardening. But until
that day comes, I’ll be the one turning up the
bass to max,” states Grammy-winning EDM
icon Benny Benassi on his future goals.
“I’ve always wanted to be a DJ ever
since I was a teenager, and I started in a
club near where I lived with my parents in
Reggio Emilia. One thing led to another – I
was lucky enough to have a cousin, Alle
Benassi, who’s a talented musician, and
I got him into producing electronic music
on a computer,” Benassi looks back. “We
became a production team, and things got
better. I started my career as a house DJ. Alle
is a classically trained musician, and when
he started making music with me, he had a
weak spot for techno music. Reggio Emilia
had an amazing output of Italian house
productions, so there was already a scene.”

Since the late ‘80s, Benny and Alle Benassi have been known as Benassi Bros. (“‘Benassi Bros’ sounds
better than ‘Benassi Cousins,’” according to Benny Benassi), and worked together on smash hits like
Benny’s “Satisfaction,” Chris Brown’s “Beautiful People” and “Don’t Wake Me Up,” and Madonna’s “Girl
Gone Wild.” (Just so you know, Benny Benassi is hoping to collaborate with Kanye West and Bono from
U2, soon.)
Other than making music, Benny Benassi has another passion: cycling. “I got my first professional bicycle
when I was 8. My father was and still is very passionate about cycling, as is everyone in the family –
uncles, cousins and relatives,” he describes. “We all lived in the same house, and if I try to count the
number of bikes, there were at least 15! On Saturdays and Sundays, my father took me into the hills with
his bike team. That’s where it all started.”
In 2010, moreover, he launched a major West Coast club tour on a fixed-gear bicycle – the Benny
Benassi Bike Tour: A Musical Ride Through California…Without Breaks. “A few years ago, on vacation in
California, I stumbled upon the beautiful coast road near Big Sur,” recalls Benassi. “So I decided to go
back there with my bike and ended up riding from San Francisco to San Diego with a crew of friends
from Italy, filming and photographing the whole tour. We invited the fans to ride with us here and there.
It was amazing!”
He may or may not do the bike tour again: “I have a close friend who often cycles coast to coast. For
now, it’s just a conversation.”
Working with World Bicycle Relief, after his 2010 bike tour, Benassi provided over 45 bikes to students in
Africa. Throughout the years, furthermore, he has also supported MusiCares Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund
and CharityStars. “I just did a show called ‘Zero,’ in my hometown of Reggio Emilia in Italy. Part of that
show involved projecting images from the GAIA project by Guy Lalibertè, founder of Cirque du Soleil
and the One Drop Foundation whose mission is to bring water to those communities on the planet that
have drastic shortages,” adds Benassi.

Overall, the year of 2015 has been going “pretty well”
so far for Benassi, whose last studio album was 2011’s
Electroman. “Alle and I are working on new music. I’ll
be releasing individual tracks from the album as singles,
leading up to the release,” explains the 48-year-old EDM
maestro, who recently dropped a new song “Who I Am”
with Marc Benjamin featuring Christian Burns.
Since he obviously has so many exciting projects in
the works, would we ever see something like Benassi’s
own clothing line coming up? “I wouldn’t say I’m picky
[about what to wear] so much as I simply take pleasure
in choosing my clothes! Nothing too obsessive, though,”
he says. “I don’t know about a clothing line but I have
launched a line of headphones with RCF (Iconica
series)!”

Petite Meller is a singer-songwriter using music
and videos to create a world that’s all her
own. “I’m creating my own little empire based
on creativity,” she says. “I think we can take
our fantasies and make them into realities.
That’s what I do in my videos. I make my own
reality.”
Petite
Meller
Born in Paris to a French mother and a
Polish father but raised primarily by her
grandmother, Meller grew up listening to a
combination of Euro-pop and jazz musicians
like Dizzy Gillespie and chanson singers like
Jacques Brel, Charles Aznavour and Serge
Gainsbourg.
When she was 15, Meller moved with her
parents to Tel Aviv. She filled her time going
to jazz festivals and studying photography.
Meller began playing in bands while in Tel
Aviv, and then moved to New York to pursue
her musical ambition. It was there she realized
that she would have to go solo in order to stay
true to her idiosyncratic vision. “I felt I wanted
to do my own genre,” she says, “which is
‘nuovo jazzy-pop.’”
She poured her own time and money into
shooting her video for “NYC Time.” The video,
which shows Meller being carried by a huge
man from the suburbs into New York City, was
cast under the streets of the city itself.
Her most ambitious video to date “Baby
Love” was filmed on location near Nairobi
in Kenya; the video sees Meller imitating
flamingos and dancing with schoolchildren
and a pair of giraffes. “‘Baby Love’ was the
first song I wrote after leaving New York,”
she explains. “I went straight to Sweden and
wrote it with Joakim Åhlund. He’s from the
band Teddybears, and his brother Klas writes
for Katy Perry. I was thinking about the video
in the same moment. We felt like it was an
African drum sound, so we knew the video
would be in Africa.”
SPOTLING ON:
That Poppy
That Poppy grew up in Nashville, surrounded by music.
Her father was a drummer in a punk band, and her
brother followed suit, drumming for multiple groups at
once. Despite her percussive roots, That Poppy had
a different passion: “I was a dancer for 11 years,” she
remembers. “That was my first love. But when I was in
middle school, I started to get made fun of a lot, and
music became my outlet.” To cope, That Poppy began
writing lyrics in her journal and listening to bands like
Jimmy Eat World, No Doubt and Blondie. Finally, when it
came time to choose between dancing and music, That
Poppy “fell in love with singing.”
Her love for music has only grown since then; she now has
hundreds of journals full of song ideas and melodies.
That Poppy’s world is certainly a colorful one, filled with
roller-skating, hair dye and the latest documentaries. She
loves purple and pop/rock, and often draws on J-pop,
which is “drastically different from K-pop,” for inspiration.
“On the surface, it looks innocent and cute, but there’s
definitely a darker undertone,” she says of the Japanese
genre. “That really connects with personality.”
Her music exhibits the same dichotomy. Reggae-inspired
beats, punky rock riffs and a candy-sweet pop sensibility
infuse each of her tunes, co-existing in a wholly enigmatic
manner. Her songs are irresistibly catchy, but cheeky lyrics
add a depth and complexity rarely found in traditional
pop songs.
That Poppy is, moreover, all about self-expression.
“I write songs because I have a lot of feelings,” she says,
gushing about the opportunity to continue making
music and share it with people. “I want people to be
able to relate to what I’m talking about because I have
something to say.”
Her aesthetic definitely says a lot. She’s undeniably
adorable, with anime eyes and pale hair, but her
Instagram posts and YouTube videos also showcase an
affinity for the uncanny and bizarre. She is an enigma,
endlessly mysterious and fascinating. In fact, when asked
to describe herself, That Poppy says she’s “made of
diamonds.” Whether or not it’s true, she certainly shines.
thatpoppy.com
“My mission in life is to make the songs and
videos together,” she adds. “Everyone I work
with is so right. I’ve been very lucky with the
people I interact with. Together, we’re making
an ongoing film of my life.”

recalling her 20-year-long struggle
before a huge career breakthrough
(“Finally, the role came that was
supposed to be my role. It’s almost
like, all the stars were aligned – I was
at the right place at the right time,
and I was prepared”).

While she finished filming two movies Chapter &
Verse (due out late this year) and Custody (will be
released next year), and started shooting Orange
season 4 (“My home for the next couple of months
is definitely going to be behind bars,” laughs
Leyva), she’s also been working with Rock the
Vote, targeting the Latino community (“Especially
after the comments made by Mr. Donald Trump,
the only way we’re going to show that we are
important to society and to the United States is
that everyone needs to come out and vote. It
doesn’t matter if you’re 18 or 65 or 105, vote”).
On top of that, she started writing a column for
the Huffington Post in early June, and her very first
post was titled, “What Caitlyn Jenner’s Vanity Fair
Cover Sparked For Me As Sister of Trans Woman.”
“I remember watching the interview when Caitlyn
was still Bruce Jenner before transitioning, and I
was moved by that. And, I saw her cover. I got
emotional, and then, the next day, I didn’t feel
right. Something about it didn’t feel right. And,
I realized that it wasn’t her moment that made
me feel uncomfortable, it was this grandiose
moment of Vanity Fair and this fashion moment,
and the lights and the glitz and glamour of it,”
Leyva elaborates. “That is not the reality of the
transgender community. A very small percentage
[of them] is living that kind of fabulousness and
the kind of acceptance that Caitlyn Jenner and
Laverne Cox and many others in the limelight
have received. My sister still is ridiculed when she
walks down the street. My sister can’t get a job
yet. And, she is not the only one. I’m so happy for
Caitlyn Jenner, but she was able to afford all these
wonderful surgeries to complete her transition and
to give her what she always dreamed of. And,
there are some in the transgender community
that don’t want those surgeries, but then, those
that do – who would love that – can’t afford
that because they can’t even get jobs. And yes,
more conversations are being started. People
are discussing it more but we can’t lose sight that
the transgender community is still a community
affected by hatred and ignorance.”
“My sister was very grateful. My sister actually
cried. And, she…,” Leyva suddenly pauses,
getting incredibly teary. “She says she’s always
been proud of me, but that was extra, that was
extra special when she said, ‘Oh, my God, my
friends are so happy, thank you!’ So I felt good
without wanting to make a big deal about myself,
it was just to shed light on this issue, and my sister
was very proud of me. And, I’m in a position
where people wanna listen to me. So, I have to
take advantage of that,” adds Leyva with a
warm chuckle.
In order for all of us to equally embrace others,
regardless of gender and sexual orientation,
Leyva says, we have to focus on the youth
through incorporating sexuality education in the
curriculum: “We’re living in a time where finally
people are able to come out and speak and live
the way that it should be.”
In the next 10 years, she’s eager to keep working/
writing as well as to direct, produce, play the role
of La Lupe, and launch her own foundation that
would help the transgender community, cancer
research, children and the LGBT community.
“And, yeah, I see myself living a really nice life in
Malibu,” adds Leyva with a laugh.
The blog post clearly encouraged the readers;
she received a lot of great feedback on it. “The
very young transgender community reached
out to me, and mostly, African Americans and
the Latino community. And, everyone across the
board, I think, they were just thankful because
they felt like, maybe they were going to be
forgotten somehow, and that moment kind of
reminded everyone that there are still thousands
of people that suffer daily because they can’t live
their truth.”

Once known as Constantinople, is that most populous city in Turkey, and the country’s economic, cultural, and

Approximately 11.6 million foreign visitors arrived in Istanbul in 2012, two years after it was named a European
Capital of Culture, making the city the world’s fifth-most-popular tourist destination. Considered a global city,
Istanbul is one of the fastest-growing metropolitan economies in the world.
The city’s biggest attraction is its historic center, partially listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its cultural

The hotel is slated to open in 2018 with 463 Chambers

“It definitely was outside of my comfort zone. It was really a wonderful, kind
of, dream role, in terms of the fact that I got to play so many colors,” Tonynominated actress Sanaa Lathan, 44, says of her role as Leah Vaughn in the
latest movie The Perfect Guy. (“Sorry, I’m just finishing my breakfast,” she
quickly adds with a laugh as she talks with her mouth full.)
In the movie, Leah meets “the perfect guy” Carter (starred by Michael Ealy),
and their relationship goes really great – until everything starts going really
wrong. “She had the whole romantic aspect as well as the fear aspect
that are trying to come into her own and taking control of her destiny,”
says Lathan.
“I’ve had relationships – whether it would be maybe friendships, work
relationships or dating relationships – where I’d had a certain idea about
somebody and then they turned out to be something completely different
from what I thought,” Lathan says of her personal experiences. “I certainly
have not had anything close to what Leah has experienced with Carter. But,
what I can take away from that is, it just takes a long time to get to know
somebody, you know. And, sometimes, people jump into things. Certainly,
my character did.”
Here’s how Lathan defines “the perfect guy”: “I don’t think anybody is
perfect. But, for me, it’s somebody who has integrity, somebody who is easy
to laugh, to have fun, somebody who’s passionate about something in this
world, whatever that would be, their job or family, and somebody who is a
good communicator.”

While we will get to see her in various films next year (including Now You See

[The release] will all depend on when the script is done and then when we’re

and I grew up in the business
as well because both of my
parents were in the business, so
I’ve always contributed to the
development of projects and
been kind of vocal in most of
the movies that I’ve been in,”
Lathan passionately elaborates.
“This is really a natural next
step that I’m developing and
envisioning projects that I

an extension of what I’ve been

This one might be another role that
is outside of her comfort zone as her
character Tracy Ellison is a successful
business woman, believing that money
is always a huge factor that leads you to
absolute happiness – and Lathan doesn’t
share the same mindset. “For me, it’s about
quality of life, it’s about people around
you, it’s about the work you are putting out
there, it’s about your family and friends.
Money can make things easier, but it
doesn’t necessarily equate happiness,”
Lathan strongly asserts.

Lathan grew up traveling between
New York and Los Angeles, and went
to college to major in English and
then went to grad school for acting,
trying to find her talent and polish her
craft. “I would say [to my younger
self], ‘Keep working hard and keep
trusting yourself because your gut

says. “‘Performance’ is really just

Other than cementing herself as one
of the Hollywood’s most prominent
forces, she’s also been a devoted
philanthropist, who recently started
the Sanaa Lathan Foundation.
“We’re starting out with getting
scholarships to foster girls. I was
inspired by and have been a big
supporter of the HerShe Group, and
they are a great organization that
helps foster girls and stops the cycle
of what’s got them into the foster
care – everything from how
to apply for a job, how to have
high self-esteem, workshops to
their necessities of life, you know,
all that kind of stuff, so I’ve got to
do my own version of that,”
explains Lathan.
On another note, Lathan loves cooking,
as well. The possible premiere of her own
cooking show? Unlikely. “I don’t know if I
necessarily wanna be talking and cooking
– it’s like juggling and talking at the same
time,” she says, laughing. “And I know
that’s not an easy task but I love watching
them and I do love cooking. I just made
great breakfast.”
Well, “the Sanaa Lathan cooking show”
might not be happening, but it’s pretty
obvious that her future endeavors are
going to be breathtaking and fulfilling: “I
don’t do like a 5-year, 10-year goal – I just
wanna continue to live in the moment as
well as work on my projects and do good
work, put it out there, and love my family
and friends, and continue to laugh.”

Winter Issue - Trinidad
Trinidad
Trinidad (Spanish: “Trinity”) is the larger and more populous of the two major islands and
numerous landforms which make up the island nation of Trinidad and Tobago. The island lies just
11 km (6.8 mi) off the northeastern coast of Venezuela and sits on the continental shelf of South
America. Though part of the South American continent, from a socio-economic standpoint, it is
often referred to as the southernmost island in the Caribbean. With an area of 4,768 km2 (1,841
sq mi), it is also the fifth largest in the West Indies.
Many believe the original name for the island in the Arawaks’ language was “Iëre” which
meant “Land of the Humming Bird.” Some believe that “Iere” was actually a mispronunciation
or corruption by early colonists of the Arawak word “Kairi” which simply means “Island.”
Christopher Columbus renamed it “La Isla de la Trinidad” (“The Island of the Trinity”), fulfilling a
vow he had made before setting out on his third voyage of exploration.
Diversity is the status quo in Trinidad and Tobago. It is sometimes known as a “rainbow island”
or more fondly “a callaloo” (local dialect for a delicious dish prepared by blending a variety of
ingredients). There is a wide range of ethnicity, religion, and culture.

Anna Chromý
For an artist with 60 sculptures in public places across Europe, it is astonishing that few people in the
English-speaking world have heard of Anna Chromý.
In 2012, the chairman of the British Olympic Committee, Lord Moynihan, invited Chromý to design the
sculpture for the athletes’ Olympic Village.
Now, the Chinese have fallen in love with her work and are honoring her with the first solo artist
exhibition at the hugely prestigious National Museum of China, which fronts onto Tiananmen Square.
This phenomenal compliment to a Western artist follows on from a 2005 visit where Chromý was invited
as Guest of Honor at the Art Fair in Guangzhou. Her sculpture, Violin Player was displayed on all official
announcements, posters and programs.
Chromý is the quintessential European: a Czech who grew up in Austria and is now based in Monte
Carlo. She is perhaps best known for a monumental 50-ton work in blinding white Carrara marble, the
Cloak of Conscience. The marble comes from the same quarry that produced the five-ton block, from
which Michelangelo produced his famous statue of David.

Having garnered over 605 million total views and 5.2
million subscribers, 24-year-old YouTube phenomenon
Joey Graceffa is unstoppable: He’s now working on
the second season of his web series Storytellers, and a
murder-mystery series with YouTube Originals (both will be
released next year). “I got my first camcorder when I was
8 and making home videos with my friends and cousins,
and then, when I was 15, I got my first digital camera,
with which I could now upload videos to a computer
to start editing so that’s when I started YouTube,” says
Graceffa.
Graceffa was born and raised in Marlborough,
Massachusetts, and moved to Los Angeles at age 19 – on
his own. “I only had a few thousand dollars in my bank
account so I was living paycheck to paycheck, just trying
to make it. And then, my YouTube started growing, and
I felt more comfortable each month,” Graceffa looks
back. “It was definitely hard leaving everything I knew
behind, but at this point, I was kind of over my home life

This year, Graceffa released a music video for
“Don’t Wait” – in which he kisses another man
at the end – on his birthday (May 16), and
two days later, he uploaded a video titled
YES I’M GAY. And then, the very next day,
his autobiography In Real Life: My Journey
to a Pixelated World came out. “The biggest
question on my YouTube channel had always
been whether I was gay or not. And, it took
me a lot of years to feel OK with who I was.
And, a few months before I decided to write
the book, I felt more confident with who I
was, and I wanted to share my story and I
used my book as a vessel to get my story out
there, so I began the book process about my
whole life, and coming out was just a part of
that,” Graceffa elaborates. “And then, a few
months before [the book’s release], I decided
that I wanted to do a music video too. It was
all just one big coming-out experience. ”
360 MAGAZINE 161
In the book, he candidly talks about everything from his
mother’s alcoholism and his brother’s autism to his own journey
to self-acceptance. “It was very toxic and hard for me to even
talk about, so none of my friends knew, and a lot of my family
didn’t even know what I was feeling or going through. And,
it wasn’t until I moved out and had met a friend (Meghan
Camarena) who went through a similar experience and
ultimately talked about it online that inspired me to share my
story so I posted a video called ALCOHOLISM!, where I talked
about my mom’s issues and how that affected me for the first
time ever publicly,” describes Graceffa. “It was almost like a
video diary where I got to talk about what I had been holding
in for so long, and when I saw the reaction of how it helped
people who were going through similar things, and they could
relate to what I went through, it really made me happy that I
was able to share my story, and inspired me to continue with
that.”
While his sister and father are very supportive of him and they
all talk every day, his relationship with his mother is, according
to Graceffa, still a work in progress. “She still struggles a lot with
alcoholism, and she is constantly in another rehab and our
relationship is always up and down,” he reveals.
When asked how his brother Jett has been doing, Graceffa
openly answers, “He’s doing good. Each year, he develops
a lot more of communication skills and gets much better.” (In
the book, regarding Jett, he writes: “It’s tough to know that
I’ll never be able to have a real conversation with him. I want
to be able to teach him things about life that I have learned,
and pass along all of my big brother wisdom. I can still do that
to a degree, but his life is going to be very different from mine
and my sister’s, and the fact is that I know he will probably
end up being the one to teach me lessons about getting
past adversity.”) “I’ve learned a lot about patience and not
having a fear of people who are different, and reaching out
and being more open to people who have mental issues,
and being friendly and treating them more like a human than
someone to be afraid of,” adds Graceffa. “I grew up in a lot
of special education classes so I was constantly surrounded by
those people who have mental issues and other disorders like
autism, Down syndrome and ADHD so it was something I was
used to, but also when I had my brother, it became a lot more
real in my life. And, it made me appreciate the things that I
have, as well – just being able to have those communication
skills that I know he doesn’t have. That just makes me
appreciate life a lot more.”

energetically shares. “And, I just want to

Tesla
Model S P90D
Ludicrous
Shin Takei
Ludicrous: 762 horsepower, 713 lb-ft of torque, 0-60 mph in 2.6
seconds. And it’s quiet because there’s no internal combustion
engine burning fossil fuels. Elon Musk (the CEO of Tesla and
SpaceX) is only 44 years old and has already made quite a name
for himself. How could a brand new car company build the
world’s fastest electric vehicle and make it attractive for many
affluent former customers of traditional luxury manufacturers
like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Jaguar, Lexus and Cadillac to
flee from their beloved rides? In fact, there were some glitches
on early cars but Musk fixed them all for subsequent production
cars – just like you would have to if you’re going to ferry people
to space and back: Both software and hardware are constantly
updated to make the car better. The owners would wake up in
the morning to find that the software has been downloaded and
updated and that new features have been added while they
were asleep. Model S “P90D” means that it has a dual 90-kWh
240-mile range battery, AWD with Ludicrous feature.

Although it was designed in 2008 and the production began in 2012, the Model S still looks
good and wouldn’t look out of place parked next to a supercar. The flush door handles
that pop out and the charge port door that opens and closes automatically when you
need it are neat features. The standard wheels are 19” but the car really looks good with
optional 21” grey turbine wheels. Looking from behind, there are no big in-your-face
exhaust tips because there aren’t any. The all-glass panoramic roof has wind deflectors
and opens wide. However, once you sit inside, it’s hard not to notice the huge vertical
17” capacitive discharge display, which is the command center of the Model S. At the
top, you have a home icon, time, outside temperature and who the car is configured
to. Below that, there is a row of app icons like sound system, navigation map, calendar,
energy consumption, Internet, rear-view camera and phone. The screen can be split to
top and bottom, and you can switch the screen top to bottom, and vice versa. Tesla isn’t
compatible with Apple CarPlay: Tesla clearly beat Apple to it, and no wonder they don’t
need CarPlay. However, you can connect your iPhone or Android device – your calendar
function and address list work together with the NAV system to guide you to that location.
From this screen, you can open and close your sunroof, set your steering mode from
Comfort to Sport, set your suspension from very high to low and activate automatic
lowering for high-speed runs. We love the “Creep” feature which makes the car creep
forward like in normal automatic transmission cars, keeping you alert to have your foot on
the brake when at a stop. There’s regenerative braking (when it’s turned on, it applies the
kinetic energy back to the battery). You can immediately feel this when you stop pressing
the accelerator pedal as the car starts to slow down without depressing the brake pedal.
The optional Autopilot feature is our first step towards autonomous vehicles. You can set
it and let go of the steering wheel as Autosteer and Auto Lane Change features allow
you to flick the turn signal switch, and the car changes lanes when it determines it’s safe
and there’s enough space, with your hands off the steering wheel. However, any touch
of the steering wheel will negate the system and you’re back in control. To keep you safe,
there are Forward-Collision Warning, Side Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning,
Speed Limit Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking. And, our favorite is setting
your acceleration mode to Sport or Ludicrous, which, of course, consumes more battery
power. To prevent damage to the 90-kWh battery, the main battery pack contacts are
made of Inconel, a superalloy to increase the current flow rate from 1300 to 1500 watt
amps. A special fuse with its own electronic wizardry and lithium-ion battery harnesses the
difference between the normal current and the ludicrous current so nothing melts down
or heats up out of control. The effect is just breathtaking acceleration.
Acceleration is instantaneous, and one can be sucked back into the seats. The cars
you left in your wake become quickly smaller in the rear-view mirror as you look at the
speedometer and realize you’re going 120 mph in an instant. The handling is quite good
with no drama to worry about especially for a car weighing 4,647 lbs. The build quality
is first rate inside and out with a simple and clean design for the dashboard. We did not
notice any NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) for a car that was built by such a new
company. The charger is built into the car, and a 220-volt wall connector is another $750.
When taking long trips, your NAV will tell you how many supercharger stations you need
to visit as well as how many miles you have until you run out of juice. Since the battery is
located below the car, it can be swapped out in 9 minutes at some charge stations. A
Tesla app can be downloaded so you can always be connected with your car. The GPS
will allow you to identify the current car location on map, honk the horn, flash lights, vent
the car, set charge time and limit, and turn on climate control.
There are only two gripes. Because there is no ICE (internal combustion engine) or gas
tank, there’s abundant space for luggage but there are no storage bins. It has a glove
box, but there are only two cup holders for the front occupants and none for the rear.
There are no door pockets and just a tray between the front seats. And, for a car costing
over $130,000, we would like soft-close doors. The most difficult thing about driving the
P90D is self-discipline of not forgetting to let your right foot off the accelerator pedal. An
investment in a radar detector may save you from getting a speeding ticket. However,
as the fastest sedan on this planet that’s made in the USA, the 2016 Tesla Model S P90D
Ludicrous is more than ludicrous – it’s sensational.

The

Vaughn Lowery + Morgan Lorenti
Leaving Las Vegas in the
Jaguar F-TYPE R Convertible,
we stopped at The Serving
Spoon located in Inglewood,
California. Our experience
holds true to the restaurant’s
“Love At First Bite” motto.
Opened in 1982, with a goal of starting an
unforgettable soul food restaurant, The Serving
Spoon still sticks to its roots today. Giving off a
nostalgic feel while embracing its history, this
restaurant is cooking up some of the best eatery
in town.
As soon as you open the door, your nostrils are
hugged by an ambrosial aroma which permeates
the diner. The manager, Gaby, greets everyone
with a warm smile, making no one feel like a
stranger. Her refreshingly sweet aura is contagious.
The Serving Spoon is rumored to have some of the
best chicken and waffles around. While this may
seem like a brazenly bold statement for a “nonSouthern” restaurant to make, The Serving Spoon
has an ample amount of positive reviews to back
up its claim.
There are plenty more delicious options at The
Serving Spoon, however, and those options will
have your stomach growling in anticipation as
you read through their menu. The chicken wing
drumettes and succulent salmon croquettes are
just two suggestions that will have leave you more
than satisfied. The perfectly seasoned catfish, spicy
sausage and grits were our absolute favorites.
The main draw for The Serving Spoon has always
been their chicken; customers just can’t seem
to get enough. As you cut through the perfectly
seasoned crust, your mouth can’t help but water,
and one bite sends your taste buds into a frenzy.
Their down-home style cooking has kept this
restaurant jam-packed throughout the years.
The Serving Spoon also serves up a number of
refreshing drinks at the fully stocked bar to pair
with their fantastic food. From mimosas to Bloody
Marys, this restaurant offers a wide variety that is
guaranteed to have you order more than just one
drink.
With its original vintage look from the 1980s still
intact, this restaurant sticks to its history: giving off
an urban feel in the city which is down the street
from the Forum arena where world-renowned
talents, such as Janet Jackson, Madonna and
Maroon 5, have performed. Come see what all
the hype is about and satisfy your senses.

2016 Jaguar
F-TYPE R Convertible
We took the car for a 4.5-hour drive from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and
found it to be the most comfortable ride largely due to the climate
package. Even with a light drizzle, the new drive train exhibited little
to no slip at high velocities. The roadster’s pure aerodynamics forced
condensation to flow over our heads and not to enter the cabin
while all windows were cast upward. Upon arrival at ARIA Resort &
Casino, we unpacked and packed on a few rounds of blackjack; then
decided to re-engage our glacier white-colored car, hopping back
into the cockpit for a nightly drive on the Strip underneath the city’s
coruscating lights.
Hands down, the 2016 Jaguar F-TYPE R Convertible is one of the most

Every few years or so, a car company fabricates
a phenomenon. Over the past three seasons,
one of the automotive industry’s proven loudest
leaders is the 2016 Jaguar F-TYPE R Convertible
for a myriad of reasons: its stunning blueprint,
progressive transmission and obnoxious exhaust
(loud and unapologetic). Coming in at around
$111,245, you are simultaneously propelled into
both the modern-day muscle car and luxury
market segments – pushing 0 to 60 mph in 3.9

more advanced technology packages in its class).
Its 550-hp 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine bears a
true sports car experience with 502 lb-ft of torque,
jolting heads back and forth. Furthermore, it also
possesses a super performance braking system –
one of the best in the history of its maker.
The overall styling of the vehicle is reminiscent

customers can order bespoke exterior colors, interior wood, leather, finishes and 19” wire or alloy wheels.
You can even specify the finish of the switches on the dash. Every exterior trim is hand-made, including

Jaguar XKR is already quite a refined GT car, and so is the Speedback GT with its underpinning drives,
well, just like a XKR, but with the elegance of the classic Aston Martin looks and the gorgeous interior.
There is no comparison here to contemporary Aston Martin interiors and the elegance of classic British
coachbuilding skills, and artistry is exemplified in the overall feel of the Speedback GT – sporting,
comfortable, attractive, built with high quality fit and finish, and fun to drive. For a prototype with over
15,000 miles, we could not discern any NVH and forgot that it was a prototype. It was exhilarating and a
pleasure to drive. The Speedback GT will set you back $753,000, but you’ll probably never see another
one as David Brown only plans to build 100 of them worldwide.
davidbrownautomotive.com
For all the automotive history buffs, the name Sir David Brown should ring a bell. He owned Aston
Martin from 1947 to 1972 and created many legends like the DB2, DB2/4, DB2/4 Mk II, DB Mark III, DB4,
DB5, DB6 and DBS, but the most famous of them is the DB5 driven by Sean Connery as James Bond
in the movie Goldfinger equipped with rocket launchers, machine guns, rear bullet shield, protruding
knock-off centers, passenger ejection seat, radar and nozzles that squirt slippery oil for chasing cars.
The DB5 was the most coveted of the Sir David Brown-era Aston Martins and still is today.
How about David Brown of David Brown Automotive – not related to Aston Martin’s Sir David Brown
– who happens to own a classic Aston Martin DB5? Just like most of us, he was enamored by a DB5
and enjoyed its classic sports car attributes, but as he got used to driving modern GT cars and sports
cars, he realized that the classic feeling was no longer comfortable or fun. He also owned a modern
Jaguar XKR and started thinking what if the DB5 could drive like the XKR. That thought culminated

Zedd
Eiko Watanabe
Grammy-winning
producer/DJ Anton
Zaslavski, professionally
known as Zedd, kicked
off this year with the same
New Year’s resolution as
he had for the previous
year: “Not to respond to
hate, and spread positivity
and love.”
In mid-January, the 26-year-old EDM
star finished up his True Colors Tour.
“For two years, we watched almost
every show I played and wrote down
notes of what I liked/didn’t like and
how we could improve the show.
Before I started the True Colors Tour,
we rented a warehouse for three
weeks and built my production. I
changed the position of certain
lights and angles of the LED walls,
and designed a bunch of lighting
look ideas. And, we just made sure
that every single song I could play
would have a plan, color, position
and vision. Up until 30 minutes before
my first show, I didn’t even have a set
yet – all we had was a look for every
song. So it took a couple weeks for
me to finalize a perfect set for the
tour,” he says of the tour preparation.
Zedd always puts considerable importance on the music itself as well as the visual aspect of his
show. “We spend an insane amount of time brainstorming ideas of how we can interpret every single
song,” describes Zedd. Furthermore, to make things more intense (and fascinating), he is a dedicated
perfectionist. “The downside of me being such a perfectionist and wanting my show to be 100% live is,
obviously, there are always mistakes involved. That’s natural. There are hundreds of lighting fixtures and
82 feet of LED wall, lasers, and special effects. Everything is run live by five people in total, so it’s very
hard to achieve perfection,” he reveals. “Sometimes, when we have a bad show, it bums me out more
than it really should – for most of the things we notice, no one else sees because no one knows what
I had planned. The upside is that the goal of having a perfect show is so high that you always have
something to look up to. In four years of touring and playing hundreds of shows, we’ve not one single
time played a perfect show, but we’re still getting better and better with every single show. I think it’s
really important to always have something to work up to in life.”
As a follow-up to his 2012 breakout debut album Clarity, Zedd released True Colors last May: a concept
album where each song would have a different color. “Halfway through the record, I realized that
every single song was entirely different from the other and that they really did live in their own world
sonically but were still musically connected. I wanted to challenge myself to make a full-length album
with that idea,” he elaborates. “I could have gone the easy route and just thrown a couple of singles or
album tracks together, but that would not have satisfied me.”
While creating the album, Zedd fully challenged himself to take on the concept of “showing somebody
your true colors, showing somebody who you really are and what’s in your heart.” “A big part of my
heart is classical music, rock music, metal, jazz and so on. All these genres, for most people, don’t have
a lot to do with electronic music,” adds Zedd. “When I make a song like ‘True Colors,’ which is mostly
acoustic, or ‘Transmission,’ which has a rock vibe to it, or the jazzy section in ‘Done With Love,’ I want to
make sure that people know that those things are part of me and that I’m not trying to be different or
anything – I just wanna express something that is me. Those are my true colors.”
Why is it essential for Zedd to express his “true colors” this way? “Because I like honesty. Sometimes,
it can be really hard to say something that is in your heart, but music is the best tool to express your
emotions in a way that isn’t super open and obvious,” he opens up. “I am a person who loves the truth. I
am always straightforward and honest. It’s important for me to be the same with my music.”
Zedd started playing piano at age 4, and then drums in a metal band with his brother when he was
12. Eight years later, he came across electronic music. “I think what was really motivating for me when
I started making electronic music was that I didn’t know anything about it and that there was so much
to learn,” he looks back. “I loved being the only one making the decisions on everything, especially
coming from a band where you’re just one part of the decision. Music can’t be right or wrong, it’s
always just an opinion. So I loved being able to form exactly what I had in my mind, whether someone
liked it or not.” As we all know, the rest is history – he sent Skrillex a message on MySpace, and Skrillex
happened to listen to his track and formed a relationship with him – and now, Zedd has not only worked
with the likes of Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber, but has also become an artist who
effortlessly headlines Madison Square Garden. Despite all the success, however, he never seems to lose
his way. “I’ve always wanted to make great music, ever since I was a little kid. Nothing has changed
really. I still want to make great music that makes me happy and hopefully inspires other people,” he
confidently says.

One day, I woke up and remembered

Eternal wanderer of his time, Hendrik Beikirch, in collaboration with the
Montresso foundation, wanted to pay a tribute to Moroccan lines of work
that are slowly going out of business, at least the way they nowadays
persist. The idea came from the natural observation of the men and
women who keep those gestures alive in the souks in the mountain
villages or in the secluded corners of the Moroccan countryside. Those
are unforgettable “faces” often photographed but never praised. The
process and the idea became self-logical: to photograph the context,
pause on the occupation and let Beikirch immortalize the man like in a
tribute to mankind.
Tracing Morocco is first of all the encounter between a man, a country
and his people. The book highlights the beauty of encounters and
human passions. In order to honor them, Beikirch portrayed those
Moroccans, emphasizing these anonymous’ fascinating emotions. During
his Moroccan escapades, he created unadorned portraits, without any
inappropriate effusions or overflowing empathy.
This is what makes these portraits so unique: They are the centre of
attention in a society in which they are normally invisible. In changing
the dimensions and the status from the classic portrait in a conventional
format to an urban mural, these faces do not lose their realistic character
— on the contrary, it comes across all the more strongly.

KEYMONO
Hailing from Lithuania, KEYMONO is a four-piece soul/electronica outfit: Alvydas
Maciulskas, Daiva Starinskaite, Aurimas Rimeikis and Marijus Aleksa. Now based in
London, by incorporating electronic instruments with the classic sound of real instruments, their music – a
unique blend of soul, jazz, and electronica – represents a seamless array of unlikely genres.
Globally recognized for their creativity, KEYMONO has garnered a number of awards throughout the years,
including the Online Music Award (for “Everything”). In 2013, the band signed with EMC Music/Sony Music
Entertainment and released an album combining tracks from their two previous albums, Waiting and
Synthezatorium.
Moreover, most of their latest album Time Capsule was recorded in a studio residing within the deep forests
of Lithuania; in order to capture the true ambiance of their music, some of it was recorded in the forest
itself. Depicted on the album’s artwork, Time Capsule is a representation of the beauty residing within the
Lithuanian wilderness, which, according to the band, “kind of happened telepathically as the artist who
drew the artwork hadn’t been there.” Living up to its name, Time Capsule represents a point in space and
time where everything stops, creating a void in which the listener can truly appreciate the care that was
put into the album-making process.
In addition, KEYMONO will tour Europe in the spring and will also be featured at numerous festivals during
the festival season.
