GENERAL MANAGER - LETTER
August 2015
As we enter the month of August this is generally the mid-point of the summer season
that captures the essence of the life-style provided to you at Lake Mohawk. The beaches
are in full swing with planned activities and events, children playing in the sand bringing
back fond memories of our youthful days, the Boardwalk Club Restaurant and Tiki bar
fully operating, swimming lessons at the Clubhouse, Ski Hawk participants training hard
for Regionals, boundless traffic on the Boardwalk as members enjoy the idyllic beauty of
sunrises and sunsets. Many of these seamless activities we take for granted. I often arrive
to work and grab a cup of coffee and proceed up to the Boardwalk to say hello to another
day at Lake Mohawk.
I take in all of the surroundings – a quick stop in the kitchen to say good morning to the
staff, the family of ducks at the Grotto, a member passing by during their casual walk,
a kayaker with their dog perched on their lap peacefully gliding in the calm waters – all
epitomizing the serenity of Lake Mohawk. I am blessed to be part of such a unique,
diverse and yet challenging community and surrounded by caring staff members who are
part of a TEAM – your team.
As I compose this letter we are actively engaging in the Town Hall/beach meetings that
engage the community on the Capital Reserve Fund/Strategic Planning initiatives that have
been ongoing since October of 2013. Volunteers throughout Lake Mohawk have put in
hundreds of collective hours to outline a clear-cut and decisive plan outlining the necessity
of a reserve fund and the sustainable future for Lake Mohawk. We can no longer operate
through crisis management. Throughout this lengthy process – the Board, Capital Reserve
Task Force and Strategic Planning Committees, Management and Staff – are looking at
all alternative methods to evaluate where we are today versus what you as a member truly
deserve within your community and life-style.
The highlights of these presentations are to define the future of Lake Mohawk.
Opportunities throughout the next several months will engage our membership to this
process. The initiatives of both the Capital Reserve Fund and long-term Strategic Planning
are to expand and upgrade the reservation amenities and protect the assets/infra-structure.
The validation from members leading up to the Annual Meeting in November will ensure
that the overall vision to make Lake Mohawk the “First Choice” for new home purchases,
secondary summer vacation residences, social catering events, business meetings, etc. will
lend credence to this Vision. We are all stewards of this Vision – your participation and
support of this will provide us with a clear path in these initiatives.
In closing – I trust that the summer season has been an enjoyable one. Time goes by quickly
so take a few extra minutes a day to enjoy all of the elements within this extraordinary
community. It is worth it!
Best regards,
Mark F. Musilli GENERAL MANAGER

MEET THE
KOWALSKI FAMILY
Robin Schwartz with the Kowalski Family
C
ynthia and Jay Kowalski of West Shore Trail
have lived at Lake Mohawk since 1968. After
serving in the US Air Force, Jay responded to a
note on a bulletin board listing a home in LMCC.
That note changed their lives, as they picked up
and moved from the base in New Mexico to their
first home on Alpine Trail. Never having seen Lake
Mohawk, Cynthia was impressed with the view as
she drove into the Plaza, “it looked like a beautiful
Swiss village”, she said. They have enjoyed three
homes during their time at Lake Mohawk.
Eventually the Kowalskis welcomed their three
sons: Eric, Gary and Kevin. Two of their sons are
now raising their own families at LMCC as well.
Cynthia says that her favorite part of living on
the lake is that it gives all of the kids and eight
grandkids reason to come and visit. The family
enjoys skiing and tubing and all kinds of water
sports right in her own backyard.
Cynthia goes on to say that she and her family
loves the BWC restaurant and always bring their
guests to enjoy the beautiful view.
“We have a good life here,”
- adds Cynthia.

NEW PARKING
PLAN ANNOUNCED FOR WHITE DEER PLAZA
I
n an effort to offer more parking options in the
White Deer Plaza, Sparta Police have initiated a
new parking policy, effective July 13, 2015.
• There will be six 10 minute parking spaces on
the west side of the Plaza (Lakeside).
• Also on the west side of the Plaza (Lakeside)
there will be 1 hour parking enforced from
5am-6pm.
• The east side of the Plaza (St. Moritz and
Krogh’s) will have a two hour parking limit
from 5am-6pm.
There will be additional moves made to enforce
handicapped parking spaces and keep pedestrian
crosswalks clear of parked cars. Summonses
will be issued for violators. “By stepping up this
enforcement, the safety of vehicle and pedestrian
traffic will be heightened making White Deer Plaza
a better place to visit, “according to Sgt. Dennis
Proctor of Sparta Police.
Deborah Graybill, owner of Shelter Vintage in
the Plaza as well as a lifelong resident of LMCC
comments, “The great news is that White Deer
Plaza is thriving and attracting more visitors each
year. We can’t make more parking, so I think it’s
time that we start putting a value on the precious
parking that we do have.”

LAKE LIVING
GOOD DEEDS
Submitted by Peggy Laddey
T
he Lake Mohawk Preservation Foundation is
proud of its latest project: the installation of a
rain garden.
Work has just begun on this very special Eagle
Scout Project, which is located at the Boardwalk
near the spillway.
A rain garden is a shallow depression
that is planted with deep rooted
native plants and grasses. The plants
then filter the rain water and run
off of pollutants before entering
the waterways. This project largely
benefits water quality, especially at a
lake community.
Club member Tim Clauss has initiated
this garden as his Eagle Scout Project.
We are grateful to Tim and his group
of volunteers for this effort. We are
also hoping that this project inspires
other Members to create rain gardens
in our community for the overall
benefit of the Lake.
18
A big thank you goes to Tim and his volunteers, as
well as Tracy and Drew Hoag of Danforth’s Lake
Mohawk Marina, Mohawk Gardens of Sparta
and Dales’s Garden Nursery of Andover for their
generous contributions.

CAPITAL RESERVE STUDY
AND STRATEGIC PLAN
INFORMATIONAL MEETINGS HAPPENING
T
he Board of Trustees, your Management team,
the Strategic Plan Committee, and the Reserve
Study Task Force have been working for the past
two years on two very important initiatives for the
LMCC community: The Capital Reserve Fund
and the Strategic Plan. Prior to the 2015 Annual
Meeting, there will be several opportunities to
present and discuss the recommendations that will
be up for approval on November 7th.
The Capital Reserve Fund is necessary to protect
the infrastructure of our community both now and
in the future. This fund will ensure that LMCC
has the resources to repair and replace buildings,
roads, the Boardwalk, and other assets as needed
while significantly reducing regular financial
shortfalls and surprises.
The Strategic Plan is an outline of big picture
planning for the future growth and improvements for
our community. This Plan will ensure that we are all
striving toward the same goals and working within
the same vision for Lake Mohawk Country Club.

Mohawk Country Club website at:

RECIPE
BWC RECIPE
BOARDWALK BOWTIE
SERVES 2
INGREDIENTS:
½ pound Bowtie Pasta
¾ cup Artichoke Hearts (quartered)
¾ cup Broccoli (florets, cooked)
¼ cup Peppadew Peppers (medium dice)
⅓ cup Pomace Olive Oil
3 Tbsp. White Wine
2 Tbsp. Garlic (fresh, chopped)
2 Tbsp. Pignoli Nuts (toasted)
Parmesan Cheese (grated or shaved)
1 Tbsp. +¼ teaspoon Kosher Salt
¼ teaspoon Ground Black Pepper
PREPARATION:
Fill a 4 quart pot with water, add 1 Tbsp. salt and bring to
a boil. Add bowtie pasta and cook until al dente. Place
a large sauté pan on the stove on medium heat. Add
olive oil and garlic; sauté, stirring occasionally, until garlic
begins to lightly brown, about 3 minutes. Add the white
wine and keep on the heat for another minute or so. Add
the artichokes, broccoli and peppadew peppers. Sprinkle
the remaining salt and ¼ tsp. black pepper evenly over
all ingredients in the pan. Continue to cook on medium
heat for 3-5 minutes or until all ingredients are hot. Toss
to ensure even distribution of ingredients and flavors.
DISH ASSEMBLY:
Add the freshly cooked pasta and all the ingredients from
the sauté pan to a large bowl and toss together (make sure
to use a rubber spatula to scrape all the ingredients/sauce
from the pan). Split evenly into bowls and garnish with the
Pignoli nuts and parmesan cheese. This recipe makes two
hearty portions or three slightly smaller portions.
Created by Chef de Cuisine Sean “Hutch”Hutchinson and prepared by the team at the Boardwalk Club Restaurant.

The following week we skied a

up with our annual Regional
Competition, this year they were
held in Connecticut. This is a new
site and a new team is joining
the group from Maine. I am sure
it will be a great time for all! It
is always a great weekend and a
chance for us to see other talent
on the water. Everyone works
really hard the day of competition
and that is greatly appreciated.
The Ski Hawks have been very
fortunate this year, we have
many new members and are
thrilled to have the additional
talent and support.
We have a month left on the
water. If you have ever wanted to
try skiing please come and talk
to us. August is when we try new
things and have a lot of fun.
We are on the water every
Tuesday and Thursday night.
Come have a beverage and dinner

for our monthly events—they
continue to work hand-in-hand
with our little organization to
provide a very enjoyable venue for
us to gather and share good times

We have a very experienced group
of volunteers eager to get out on
the water and teach new members
(or members new to boating on
the lake) “the ropes” by spending
an afternoon familiarizing
novices with the rules and
regulations, boat handling,
boating hazard areas, great fishing
spots and dos and don’ts
of our wonderful lake.
Collectively we have a
wealth of knowledge of
boating and Lake Mohawk

LAKE SAFETY
ON THE WATERFRONT
- QUICK REFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS
BEACH TAGS
Beach tags are strictly enforced. No tags, no
beach. Please make sure you have your Beach/
Club tags and Guest wristbands. Guest
wristbands can be purchased at the club office
during normal business hours. When the office
is closed, the Boardwalk Club cashier will have
some for purchase. MEMBERS MUST BE
WITH THEIR GUESTS. Beach Patrol Security
will also be checking tags and member cards at
Beaches after Lifeguard hours.
BEACH PARTIES
Each Beach Association has their own Beach
Party policy and procedure. However, every
Beach or Private Party function must be
registered with the Waterfront Director. This is
necessary for proper staffing for the event. A
Beach and Private Party Registration form is
available on line on the club’s website. This form
must be submitted at least seven (7) days prior to
the event to ensure proper staffing.
ICE CREAM SOCIAL
The Annual Ice Cream Social is scheduled for
Tuesday, August 11th at 7PM in the Grand
Ballroom. This is for all of our participants in our
Learn to Swim program, Junior Lifeguard program
and Waterfront Lifeguarding course graduates.
Siblings and family are also invited.
MARINE PATROL
We have experienced some late night speeders on
the lake and the Trustees have taken a zero tolerance
policy for this. Several violators have been brought
before the Marine Services Adjudication Board and
received suspension of boating privileges ranging
from 30 days to the remainder of boating season.
Violators have also been required to successfully
complete an instructor led N.J. State Boating Safety
course, even if they already have a Boating Safety
Certificate. Some beaches and docks have had some
34
kayaks and canoes go missing only to find them
at other beaches. Current LMCC tags help us to
locate owners when we find these vessels. Strongly
suggest that kayaks and canoes be locked up at
your dock. Persistent expired LMCC tag violators
have had their boats padlocked at docks until
they comply wiwwwth the LMCC regulations of
registering their boat. This is in addition to the
50-100% penalty fee assessed by the Club when
they do register their boats.
NAVIGATION BUOYS
Please notify the Marine Patrol if any Navigation
Buoy seems out of place. Please pay attention
to these regulatory buoys. There are over 75
Navigation buoys on the lake.
VESSEL SAFETY CHECKS
For a U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Vessel
Safety Check, please contact Rich Carlson at
[email protected] and schedule one. These
are free, usually taking about 10-15 minutes and
upon successful inspection, you may be able to get
a discount on your boat insurance.
STAND UP PADDLEBOARDS:
As previously reported in last month’s article, the
U.S. Coast Guard now considers SUPs vessels and
subject to PFD requirements. HOWEVER, New
Jersey considers SUPs as recreational and sports
items and does not require PFDs UNLESS you are
under 13 yrs. of age.
LMCC LIFEGUARD OLYMPICS:
On Monday, August 3rd, at 6:30 PM at Beach 1,
our Lifeguards have their annual Olympics. This
pits the guards from the East Shore against those
from the West Shore in some fun and serious
competitions. It ends with the traditional greased
watermelon contest. Junior Lifeguards also field
a team. Come out and cheer for your favorite
Beach Lifeguards.
August 2015
2nd ANNUAL SUSSEX COUNTY
LIFEGUARD COMPETITION
Lake Mohawk will again host the Sussex County
Lifeguard Competition on Monday, August 10th
at 6PM at Beach 1. All Lifeguards from the
various lake communities in Sussex County are
invited to compete. Last year, LMCC took first
place overall in a field of 40 Lifeguards competing
from different lakes and the pool. Please come
and watch as Sussex County’s best lifeguards
compete in several lifesaving events. LMCC had
the best cheering section last year-let’s support
our team again!
BRIDGE
Bridge jumpers will be reported to the Trustees and
Marine Services Adjudication Board for action.
This is dangerous and causes liability to the club.
Non members may be charged with trespassing.

LAKE SAFETY
BEAR SIGHTINGS
D
ue to the increase in local bear sightings
during the spring and summer season please
follow these precautions issued by the New Jersey
Department of Environmental Protection Division
of Fish and Wildlife:
• Secure your trash and eliminate obvious
sources of food, such as pet food on decks,
easy-to-reach bird feeders, or food residues left
in barbecue grills.
• Use certified bear-resistant garbage containers
if possible. Otherwise, store all garbage in
containers with tight-fitting lids and place them
along the inside walls of your garage, or in the
basement, a sturdy shed or other secure areas.
• Wash garbage containers frequently with a
disinfectant solution to remove odors. Put out
garbage on collection day, not the night before.
• Avoid feeding birds when bears are active. If
you choose to feed birds, do so during daylight
hours only and bring feeders indoors at night.
Suspend birdfeeders from a free-hanging wire,
making sure they are at least ten feet off the
ground. Clean up spilled seeds and shells daily.
• Immediately remove all uneaten food and food
•
•
•
•
•
bowls used by pets fed outdoors.
Clean outdoor grills and utensils to remove
food and grease residue. Store grills securely.
Do not place meat or any sweet foods in
compost piles.
Remove fruit or nuts that fall from trees in
your yard.
Install electric fencing as an effective way to
protect crops, beehives and livestock
If you encounter a bear that is standing its
ground, remain calm and do not run. Make
sure the bear has an escape route. Avoid direct
eye contact, back up slowly and speak with a
low, assertive voice.

LAKE ENVIRONMENT
HYDRO RAKING
AND HARVESTING IN THE UPPER LAKE BEGINS
H
ydro Raking and Harvesting
began in the Upper Lake
in mid July. These efforts will
continue in an effort to remove
excessive vegetation in the Lakes.
This lake quality initiative will
focus on the Upper Lake and
Turtle Cove in 2015 and then
become an annual project with
the guidance of Princeton Hydro,
Aquatic Technologies and our
engineering consultants, CP
Engineers. This process maintains
the health and recreational
viability of all of the lakes.
According to Stephen J. Souza

physical means of aquatic plant
(week) and mat algae control that
can be used in combination with
or as an alternative to the chemical
control of either”.

COME CHEER ON THE
SUSSEX COUNTY MINERS
AT SKYLANDS STADIUM
L
ooking for a fun activity to do with the family
this summer? How about some exciting
professional baseball? You do not have to travel
to the Bronx or Queens – baseball is back at
Skylands Stadium in Augusta!
The Sussex County Miners, New Jersey’s newest
independent baseball team, is gearing up for more
baseball fun through the end of the summer. The
Miners will host twenty home games in August, and
three in early September. Fans can join the adorable
mascot Herbie, the “miner,” to cheer on the Sussex
County Miners as they take on such teams as the
Garden State Grays, the New Jersey Jackals, the
Quebec Capitales, the Trois-Rivieres Aigles, the
Ottawa Champions and the Rockland Boulders.
The Sussex County Miners provide a great day
out for both kids and adults. The concession stand
features delicious food and drinks at affordable
prices. Tickets for Miners games are $10 for reserve
seating and $12 for field-level seats. The team has
special promotions every week, such as Kids Go Free
Wednesdays, Cheap Cheap Thursdays and more.
And, at every Saturday night home game, baseball
fans can enjoy spectacular fireworks. Remaining
fireworks shows this summer are: August 1, 15,
22, 29 and Sept. 5. Fans also won’t want to miss
Family Fun Sundays, when kids can run the bases
and take family photos on the field. Come on out
on any Friday night to see movies such as Frozen,
the Lego Movie, Big Hero 6 and more.
The Miners players come from New Jersey and
across the United States, as well as from other
professional teams, including a couple of former
Major League players. As the profile of the team
grows and Skylands Stadium takes its place as
a gem in professional baseball, more and more
established players will want to make Sussex
County their baseball home.
The Sussex County Miners provide Skylands
Stadium and Sussex County with a high profile
in the greater professional baseball community.
The inaugural season has featured an All-Star
Team from Japan, as well as the Canadian teams.
Teams from the sister independent league, the
American Association, have also traveled to
Skylands Stadium this summer.
The Miners are also contributing to the
community with a college intern program,
providing local college students the opportunity
to develop their skills as they seek a career in
professional sports. This season, the team has
seven interns focusing on general operations and
on-field promotions.
“Baseball has traditionally played a role in
building community and for bringing generations
together. In our inaugural year, we have developed
promotions to highlight veterans, Boy Scouts,
Girl Scouts, SCARC and dozens of other not-forprofit organizations in our community,” said Dave
Chase, general manager of the Sussex County
Miners. “The Miners and Skylands Stadium are
working hard to provide a gathering place for all of
northwestern New Jersey.”

promotions information.

LAKE HISTORY

Written by Holly Fiorella, Chairperson Lake Mohawk Historic Committee
I
t’s difficult to imagine buying a lake home
when there is no home to look at, no
neighborhood to peruse, or even a finished
lake. But that’s exactly what the first residents
of Lake Mohawk did. The lake wasn’t
completely filled, and there were no homes,
roads, or shops yet. In the late 1920s, many
families could afford a second home and they
looked to the lake communities of New Jersey
as perfect places to own such homes to escape
city life. The Crane Company, developers
of Lake Mohawk, seized this mindset and
launched a marketing campaign that would
impress even today’s advertising executives.
They set out to attract buyers and sell them the
