SINGING TIME POSTERS! Displaying posters helps the children know HOW they will be
singing the songs AND it creates an opportunity to ask a child who is reverent (or who
needs to be reverent), to participate by holding the poster when you sing. More involve-
ment means more student engagement during Singing Time.
PRELUDE IDEAS - Creates Reverent Atmosphere As Children Enter Primary
1. AW, HUM OO!
Pick three children to hold up the AW, HUM and OO signs. As the Primary children enter the room,
have sign holders take turns holding up their signs showing how to sing along with the music, no
words just AH, HUM or OO.
2. HAVE CHILDREN PROVIDE PRELUDE MUSIC - BE A PRIMARY PRO!
In advance, invite a Primary child to play Primary songs on the piano or on a woodwind or string
instrument for the prelude. They wear the PRIMARY PRO tag as they play. *Attach the tag to a
ribbon to hang around their neck or attach it to a baseball hat and have them wear it.

INVITING REVERENCE - Creates Reverent Atmosphere
1. WIGGLE SONG
Use an activity song to help get the wiggles out. For example, sing “Give Said The Little
Stream.” Have the children stand on the “S” words and clap on the “G” words. Finish with a
quiet request for everyone to sit and fold their arms.
2. COPY CAT
Instruct the children to watch and copy how you sing. Sing with a quiet voice, sing with a
whisper, sing with a whisper and arms folded.
3. TURN IT UP TURN IT DOWN
Share; “When I give you a thumbs up increase the volume when I give you a thumbs down sing
quieter, when I give you a double thumbs down, whisper the song.” Let the children also conduct the volume by choosing one to stand in the front and give the thumbs up or thumbs
down. *Explain that they can’t give a two thumbs up because this is a reverence song so
they won’t be singing that loud.
4. AS QUIET AS A MOUSE
Pick three children to hold up our 3 sized mouse signs. Share that they can learn to sing as
QUIET AS A MOUSE!
Point out that none of the mice are large so they will always be singing softly but they have
to match their soft singing volume to the size of the mouse that is held up. Stand behind
the three children and if you place your hand on their shoulder it is their turn to hold up
their sign.

PRACTICING SINGING:
1. HOT AND COLD
Have a child leave the room and another child hide an object. As the child reenters the room
have the children begin to sing. The closer the searcher gets to the object the louder the
children sing. The farther he/she is from the object the softer the children sing.
2. THE GUESSING BAG
Put objects that represent the words in a song in a bag. Have a child choose one object out
of the bag. Ask the child what the object represents in the song. Have the children who have
chosen the objects stand in the correct order of the words in the song.
3. NAME THAT TUNE
Play three notes of the song and have a child guess the song. Add a note at a time until the
song is identified correctly. Invite the child who identified the song to help you lead the song.
4. HURRY AND PASS IT PLEASE
Pass a small Primary Song Book and sing until the pianist stops playing. The child holding the
song book when the music stops has to say the next word in the song.
5. IF YOU FEEL SCARED OR BLUE
Pass the Scared or Blue card around the Primary room and sing until the pianist stops playing.
The child holding the card says what Primary song they would sing to themselves if they were
feeling sacred or blue. Point out that Primary songs can be a source of comfort and we can
sing them almost anytime or anywhere.
6. DARK HAIR, LIGHT HAIR
Pick a child to hold the DARK HAIR, LIGHT HAIR card. They close their eyes and as they hold
the card out in front of them they rotate the card until you count down from five. Which ever
hair color is at the top of the card, that will be hair color of children who will sing the next
song.

PRACTICING SINGING:
7. MUSICAL STATUES
Pick a child to come up to the front. Ask them to strike a pose like a statue in an position they
want as long as both feet are kept on the floor. Have the other children strike this same pose
and then you sing a song while everyone (teachers included). stays in this pose.
8. GUM BALL SINGING
Put a colored assortment of large gum balls into a glass jar. Choose a child to pick a gum ball.
After they have chosen one you quickly hold up the gum ball chart and have all the children
read what they will have to do based off of the color of gum ball just chosen. Quickly put the
poster away between each song so that each color will be a surprise activity.
9. OBEY THE TRAFFIC LIGHT
Invite a child up to the front. Explain that they will hold up the traffic light while everyone is singing. THEY GET TO point at a light and all of the children will need to do whatever that light stands
for. GREEN = sing, RED = stop singing, YELLOW = sing really, really slow.
10. SING LIKE A. . .
Explain that whatever picture you hold up the children will need to sing that way. Pictures
include: a robot, a pirate, a baby, a cowboy. someone sleepy, someone scared. This is silly
but fun, DO NOT do this activity when practicing a sacred song.
