Abbott Diabetes Care — Donegal ■ The Abbott Diabetes Care (ADC) site was established in 2006 in Co. Donegal. ■ The facility spans 7,500 square metres on a 27 acre site outside Donegal town. ■ The site currently manufactures and distributes the worldwide supply of Abbott’s FreeStyle and FreeStyle Lite brands of blood glucose test strips. These strips are used in conjunction with the FreeStyle brand of blood glucose monitors. The site has established itself as a centre of excellence for blood glucose monitoring strip production. The product portfolio is manufactured in a highly automated, state-of-the-art facility. ■ ADC’s innovative glucose monitoring systems help reduce the discomfort and inconvenience of glucose testing. Abbott Diagnostics — Longford Abbott Diagnostics — Sligo ■ Officially opened in 2005, the Abbott Diagnostics facility in Longford spans 135,000 square feet and is located on a 20 acre greenfield site in Lisnamuck on the outskirts of Longford town. ■ The Abbott Diagnostics site in Sligo was established in 1994 and through a number of expansions has reached its current footprint of 167,000 square feet. The site ships product globally including to the U.S., and has established a development capability to support the commercialisation of new immunoassays. ■ Abbott Diagnostics in Longford manufactures a total of 29 diagnostic reagent products. The product portfolio includes diagnostic kits for thyroid function, fertility and pregnancy, cardiology, renal and metabolic markers as well as therapeutic drug monitoring. ■ The site is a partner for Abbott R&D centres enabling fast design transfer and timely new product launches. It is involved in the transfer of the final prototype assay to the manufacturing site at the end of the research phase to ensure that the product is robust and suitable for production. The site is also involved in manufacturing production scale batches during the development phase, which are used for design verification and validation (clinical trials) prior to the launch of a new product. Abbott’s diagnostics sites in Longford and Sligo manufacture diagnostic products for more than 130 countries. ■ The product portfolio of Abbott Diagnostics in Sligo has developed over the years and currently encompasses both diagnostic reagents and bulk reagent buffers. These reagents are used for the diagnostic analysis and screening of numerous disease state and conditions such as HIV, hepatitis A, B and C, cancer markers for prostate, ovarian, testicular and non-specific tumours and congenital markers for CMV and rubella. www.abbott.ie www.abbott.ie Nutrition 12 For more than 85 years, Abbott’s nutrition business has been developing and marketing science-based paediatric and adult nutritional products to support the growth, health and well-being of people all over the world. Abbott Ireland Nutrition Division — Ballytivnan, Sligo Abbott Ireland Nutrition Division — Cootehill Abbott Nutrition Ltd. — Finisklin, Sligo ■ Established in 1974, the Abbott Nutrition site situated in Ballytivnan, Sligo, was Abbott’s first manufacturing operation in Ireland. ■ The Abbott Nutrition Cootehill facility is located approximately one km from Cootehill, on the Cavan-Monaghan border. ■ The site is a highly automated, state-of-the art-medical-device manufacturing facility. It is vertically integrated comprising moulding, extrusion, high-speed assembly and on-site sterilisation in a lean operation. ■ Abbott Nutrition in Cootehill commenced its operations in 1975. This site manufactures a wide range of science based infant formulae and follow-on formulae to support the healthy growth of infants. ■ This operation manages third party contract manufacturing of Abbott nutritional products outside the U.S.. This office manages those relationships, commercial terms, searches for new manufacturers, new product introductions, all quality assurance and quality control details, and takes accountability for all operational systems and issues including product supply. It looks after all aspects except sales and marketing of the finished product. ■ The site is a leader in providing enteral feeding devices for people who, through injury or illness, are unable to feed orally. Enteral feeding (also known as “tube feeding”) provides an alternative means of meeting a patient’s nutritional needs. The site manufactures a wide range of enteral feeding products for global distribution. Approximately 1,000 dairy farms in the region supply quality milk to the Cootehill facility, which processes 500,000 litres per day. www.abbott.ie www.abbott.ie Vascular 14 Abbott Vascular is the world’s leader in drug eluting stents. Abbott Vascular has an industry-leading pipeline and a comprehensive portfolio of market-leading products for cardiac and vascular care, including products for coronary artery disease, vessel closure, endovascular disease and structural heart disease. Abbott Vascular — Clonmel ■ Abbott Vascular’s manufacturing facility in Clonmel helps meet worldwide demand for vascular devices. A key vascular product which is manufactured in Clonmel is XIENCE – a drug coated stent used to treat coronary artery disease by propping open a narrowed or blocked artery and releasing the medicine in a controlled manner to prevent the artery from becoming blocked again following the stent procedure. Abbott Vascular is a modern 250,000 square feet facility on a 19-acre site. There has been significant investment in the Clonmel facility in the past number of years, making it a centre of excellence in the manufacture of vascular devices. ■ In 2008, Abbott officially opened its new 70,000 square feet administration, warehouse and logistics facility. This building was engineered to incorporate a range of green features designed to minimise impact on the environment. ■ These included an underground storm water retention tank to control rainwater flow; environmentally-friendly cement foundations; energy-efficient glass on the external fabric of the building and an intelligent lighting system internally that will significantly reduce energy usage. www.abbott.ie Commercial and Shared Services www.abbott.ie 16 Abbott Laboratories Ireland Ltd. — Citywest, Dublin ■ Abbott Laboratories Ireland Ltd. established in 1946, was the first Abbott business unit to be established in Ireland. ■ Based in the Citywest Business Campus in Dublin, Abbott Laboratories Ireland Ltd. is responsible for the sales, marketing and distribution of a wide range of diabetes, diagnostic, nutritional and pharmaceutical products. Abbott Established Pharmaceuticals Division — Santry, Dublin Abbott Medical Optics — Liffey Valley, Dublin and Westport ■ Located in Santry, Abbott Established Pharmaceuticals Division (EPD) focuses on growing the established pharmaceutical branded products to their full potential. ■ Abbott Medical Optics is focused on delivering life-improving vision technologies to people of all ages. It offers a comprehensive portfolio of cataract, refractive and eye care products. ■ With mulitple corporate functions on site such as quality assurance, supply chain, strategic medical affairs, regulatory affairs, commercial / marketing, purchasing and manufacturing, the Santry office supports the growth of Abbott’s mature pharmaceutical brands globally. ■ AMO has centralised customer service and finance functions for the Europe, Africa and the Middle East Region in Ireland and delivers these through two shared services centres, in Liffey Valley, Dublin and Westport, Co.
