World Nomads Haiti May 2009 Music Literature Cinema Visual Arts World Nomads Partners Ciné Institute Ciné Institute is Haiti’s only film school. Based on the southern coast in the town of Jacmel, Ciné Institute provides Haitian youth with film education, training, and production support while actively promoting Haiti’s national cinema abroad. Ciné Institute began as Festival Film Jakmèl, an annual celebration that screened hundreds of films from around the world free of charge to local audiences. The Maysles Institute As the only movie theater in northern Manhattan dedicated to documentary and independent film, the Maysles Institute serves as a site of community-based, lowcost popular education and entertainment. Located in Harlem at 343 Malcolm X Blvd, Maysles builds an audience for exemplary documentary films through screenings at the cinema house and through collaborations with outside partners. World Nomads Haiti PEN World Voices Festival of International Literature A week-long celebration of world literature featuring 160 writers from 41 countries speaking 18 different languages. This year’s festival explores the theme of “Evolution/ Revolution” in New York City from April 27–May 3. S.O.B.’S Founded by Larry Gold, who had a distinct musical vision and passion, S.O.B.’S commits itself to exposing the musical wealth and heritage of the Afro-Latino diaspora to the New York community. Through its presentation of legendary artists such as The Gypsy Kings, Buena Vista Social Club, and the late Tito Puente, S.O.B.’S has gained recognition as a passionate and cutting-edge music venue. World Nomads, FIAF’s annual exploration of transculturalism in the 21st century, returns in May with a focus on Haiti— a country brimming with a rich and vibrant cultural life that is both fiercely original and stunningly universal. FIAF has partnered with downtown music pioneer S.O.B.’S, the PEN World Voices Festival of International Literature, Haiti’s Ciné Institute, and New York’s revolutionary film center the Maysles Institute for the second edition of the series, in order to bring some of the most exciting examples of Haitian culture to New York. World Nomads Haiti has also benefited greatly from the guidance of its parrain, Jonathan Demme, who has given generously of his time and expertise, not to mention his own personal collection of Haitian art. Spanning all of FIAF, from Le Skyroom to Florence Gould Hall, and stretching between the Maysles Institute in Harlem to S.O.B.’S and The Bubble Lounge downtown, World Nomads Haiti celebrates the inspiring cultural landscape of Haiti— a closely knit community that remains full of hope and promise for the years to come. World Nomads is generously supported by American Airlines, the official airline of FIAF; Afrique & Caraïbes en créations–CulturesFrance; and Organisation internationale de la francophonie. 3 Music RAM Friday, May 1 at 8pm Co-presented with S.O.B.’S To launch the second annual World Nomads Haiti series, FIAF and S.O.B.’S present the pioneering mizik rasin band, RAM, whose “voodoo rock n’ roots” sound has become the musical voice of a generation of Haitians. Founded by lead vocalist Richard A. Morse, RAM came into prominence during the military junta of Raoul Cédras. The band has survived kidnapping and assassination attempts, bringing a message of freedom and hope to Port-au-Prince through their weekly performances at the Hotel Oloffson and subsequent recordings. Many perceive RAM as the voice of Haiti, and it is with pride and in the spirit of unity that FIAF and S.O.B.’S bring the group to New York for this special one-night-only concert. After-Party and Performance @ S.O.B.’S Featuring RAM and CaRiMi Shows at Midnight and 2am* After RAM’s electrifying show at Florence Gould Hall, head downtown to legendary venue S.O.B.’S for an after-party featuring even more RAM and a performance by genre-defying, internationally acclaimed group CaRiMi. Taken together, the Haitian Vodou religion, visual art, and popular music succeed in transcending political struggle with a cohesive, contemporary voice. Maysles Cinema 343 Malcolm X Blvd (between 127th and 128th streets) Atis-Rezistans: The Sculptors of Grand Rue Suggested Donation: $7 For added performances and forums, visit mayslesinstitute.org 21 Maysles Cinema The Revelations of Madame Nerval Les Illuminations de Madame Nerval Sunday, May 3 at 7pm Charles Najman, 1999. 55 min. In French with English subtitles. “The invisible is a mystery,” the astonishing Haitian Vodou priestess tells us at the start of the film. What follows are the implications, expressed with more than a hint of humor, which reveals the essential, fantastic, and concrete link with Africa in this pragmatic and familiar religion. Of Men and Gods Des Hommes et Des Dieux Sunday, May 3 at 8pm Anne Lescot and Lawrence Magloire, 2002. 52 min. In Creole with English subtitles. Of Men And Gods examines the daily existence of several Haitian men who are openly gay. Prevalent, yet still taboo, homosexuality and gay culture are allowed to flourish within the context of Haiti’s Vodou religion. As “children of the gods,” the men find an explanation for homosexuality as well as divine protection–while the AIDS epidemic looms as a continual threat. 22 Dreams of Democracy Thursday, May 14 at 8pm Jonathan Demme, 1988. 52 min. In English. Made shortly after the 1987 overthrow of the Duvalier regime, this film is a platform for Haitian people to express dreams and concerns for the country’s future and comment on its tumultuous present through popular culture. Director Jonathan Demme creates an impressionistic report that authentically encapsulates the opinions, aspirations, and fashions of the time. Carnival Jacmel Thursday, May 14 at 9pm Students of Ciné Institute with Jonathan Stack, 2009. In progress. This short film made by students at Haiti’s new Ciné Institute documents the Carnaval celebration that takes place every year in Jacmel. This film is the result of an initiative to build and sustain a local film industry in a town famous for its artists and film festival. Ra-Ra, A Haitian Festival Friday, May 15 at 8pm Gail Pellet, 1978. 18 min. This short film provides background on one of Haiti’s unique musical forms: Ra-Ra. The screening will be followed by a slideshow and talk with the film’s producer and ethnomusicologist, Verna Gillis, documenting and discussing her travels in Haiti. The Other Side of Water Black Dawn The Other Side of Water Friday, May 15 at 8:30pm Jeremy Robins & Magali Damas, 2008. 61 min. In English. This feature documentary follows a group of young immigrants who take an ancient music from the hills of Haiti (“Ra-Ra”) and reinvent it on the streets of Brooklyn. The journey of this unlikely band offers a unique insight into the Haitian-American experience—a rare glimpse into a world of music, spirituality, and cultural activism. Black Dawn Saturday, May 16 at 3pm Robin Lloyd, 1981. 16 min. This stop-frame animation presents the history of the Haitian revolution through the vision of Haitian artists. Recommended for all ages, Black Dawn presents a story of enslavement, uprising, and independence in a visually stunning manner—a true celebration of Haitian arts, folkways, and history. Screening to be followed by a performance and procession by the subject of the film, the band DJA RARA! Haitian Eksperyans Saturday, May 16 at 3:30pm David Belle, 1996. 25 min. This film offers a view of Haiti that is seldom the focus of documentaries about the country. Haitian Eksperyans celebrates the country’s natural beauty, rich cultural traditions, and the warmth of its people— reasons so many foreigners develop a love for the country, and a source of pride for all in the Haitian diaspora. 23 Maysles Cinema Dreamers Thursday, May 21 at 7:30pm Jørgen Leth, 2002. 55 min. In English, Creole, and French. Danish director Jørgen Leth captures with great integrity the spirituality and otherworldliness of elderly Haitian painters. Among the artists represented are André Pierre, Philome Obin, Prospere Pierre Louis, Louisiane Saint-Fleurant, and Salnave Philippe-Auguste. As these masters share their wisdom and practice the category of the “naïf” artist is itself rendered irrelevant and simple-minded. Atis-Rezistans: The Sculptors of Grand Rue Atis-Rezistans: The Sculptors of Grand Rue Thursday, May 21 at 7:30pm Leah Gordon, 2008. 35 min. Grand Rue is the main avenue that runs north–south through downtown Port-au-Prince. At the avenue’s southern end is a close-knit community with a historical tradition of arts, crafts, music, and religious practice, whose members draw on the refuse of the nearby car repair district to create powerful sculptural collages. Known for his films Silence of the Lambs and the recent Rachel Getting Married, Demme curates the exhibition featuring the works of ten Haitian artists. A long-time Haitian art enthusiast and avid collector, Demme has been a fervent advocate for Haiti through the years. He’s embraced Haiti both through his films and his collaborations with Haitian writers such as Edwige Danticat and musicians such as RAM and Wyclef Jean. Though each of the self-taught artists showcased in the exhibition has a unique style of painting, their topic— the rich cultural landscape of daily life in Haiti—unites them, presenting a detailed and poignant portrait of their country.
