In one corner there are connoisseurs who are considered in-theknow and their like counterparts, wineries that are steeped in legacy and tradition. In the other there are a multitude of people who enjoy wine, but their life doesn’t revolve around it, and winery upstarts, of which many in Paso Robles could be considered. The ironic thing is that these upstarts or startups often have a strikingly similar story at their root, a man falls in love with wine and ends up chucking it all like Gauguin to follow his dreams. In reality these Gauguins straddle both camps. They may not consider themselves connoisseurs but they did envision their life revolving around wine. At the same time, legacy and tradition are not a part of their stock so everything from the labels on the bottle, to the type of wines they make are in many ways unbound. This in and of itself does not guarantee good or bad wines, but in our opinion it does capture a key high-level difference between old and new world wines. If you think about wine as the expression of a 8 culture it also speaks to differences in ethos. Does this imply that winemakers must embrace a single philosophy of winemaking? Surely, there are valuable insights and techniques that can be leveraged from both schools of thought. Vihuela Winery came to fruition on the just that principal. The belief that old world style should be shepherded by new world techniques and thus the story begins… Several years ago Matt and his wife would travel to the Central Coast to enjoy the rolling hills, the laid-back attitude and of course, the wines. Through the years Matt developed a greater thirst for the Central Coast and it’s wines than any weekend trip could quench. The logical solution was to enroll in Fresno State’s Enology program and before long he had graduated and was working for the likes of Geyser Peak and Rudd in Napa Valley. After several years of saving and searching for just the right location to plant a vineyard, a property was located in Templeton, California. Enter Mike, aka Mike Vihuela. Rumor has it that that Mike was raised on a small olive farm off the coast of Spain and at a very early age became enamored with flamenco guitar, practicing for hours on end. “Something www.winecountrythisweek.com about the Spanish guitar stirs the passions much as a spicy Tempranillo or a complex Cabernet Sauvignon.” This romantic notion about wine and song is consistent with the name Vihuela as it refers to a Spanish Renaissance guitar. It also explains the style of Mike Vihuela’s wines, which are known for being tall, dark and tasty. It was this harmonious balance of Matt’s science and Mike Vihuela’s artistic hand that brought Vihuela Winery to life. We currently focus on Bordeaux style wines and plan on releasing our inaugural Spanish wine in late 2008. Our new tasting room is now open at 1307 Park Street in downtown Paso Robles, behind Keller Williams. Enjoy our wine and something from our gourmet pantry while you relax in our Tuscan style courtyard. Come by on Saturdays and you’re sure to catch one of the many live concerts. Jazz is always a nice paring with Vihuela’s wines as is Spanish guitar. Vihuela, it’s music to your mouth! Viheual Winery is located at 1307 Park Street in Paso Robles and is open Sunday and Monday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday until 8 p.m. For more information, call (805) 226-2010, go to www.vihuelawinery.com, or send an email to [email protected]. WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK ATTRACTIONS www.winecountrythisweek.com 9 WINE COUNTRY NEWS WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK E BERLE WINERY Tasting and Learning….and eating! by Mark Storer G ary Eberle is on yet another mission. The Godfather of Paso Robles wineries is still interested in selling wine, of course – but he’s also interested in wine education. “What happened to taking a tour of the winery?” he asks plaintively. In Paso Robles particularly, where so many of the tasting rooms are on the same premises as the beautiful wineries they inhabit, Eberle doesn’t understand why more winemakers don’t offer, or encourage tours. “When you come to Eberle, you don’t have to take a tour. But you do have to have a doctor’s note,” he jokes. Like so many winemakers and wine aficionados, Eberle believes in learning about wine as well as the consumption of it. “It’s a great way to get your brand name talked about and ultimately to sell wine.” Of course, Eberle Winery’s tours include the impressive caves that were dug beneath the facility to house and store all the varietals. The tour is as close to an amusement park ride for wine as you’ll get. Quite apart from Eberle’s joking, his status 10 Gary Eberle as a founding winemaker in Paso Robles is legendary. When he left UC Davis, he came to Paso Robles to work with Estrella River Winery in what was being touted as the “next great red wine region.” Eberle Winery has proven that adage time and again with its www.winecountrythisweek.com consistent dedication to great Bordeaux and Rhône varietals grown in Paso Robles. Eberle’s tasting room is also cut from a different cloth. A warm and inviting atmosphere with a large and beautiful oak bar, its entrance is not just to the tasting room, but to the winery itself. There are always plenty of knowledgeable staff on hand to pour you a taste and, in a complete change of pace compared to most wineries, Eberle never charges for a tasting. Eberle himself used to say, “we’ll eat a bug to sell you a case of wine.” The highlight of any tasting at Eberle Winery, though, is when Gary Eberle sets up the barbecue and cooks his famous tri-tips, ribs and sausages. Once again, it’s all free and you can stroll the grounds, take a tour, have lunch and taste the wine, all for the cost of driving up to the winery. “I love doing it and it’s a great way to meet customers and spend some time with them,” says Eberle. They are certainly that for him, and they tend to be for his regular customers, too. He puts a great deal of passion into making them and the result is unique, fruit-forward wines with extraordinary flavors that really show off their varietal and the vineyard in which they were grown. It is no real surprise, then, that the Kenneth Volk Vineyards’ tasting room is, as its wines, tasteful, simple and situated in a unique place, Tepusquet Canyon in Santa Maria. The floors, the bar, the walls – all wood, are sparsely decorated with images of the Santa Maria bench growing area and a north facing set of windows that reveal the undulating topography of the land. A creek rolls right below the tasting room and winemaking facility and a recent expansion allows customers to sit on the patio relaxing with a taste of these beautiful wines. Ken Volk himself can occasionally be seen in the tasting room pouring and talking about his wines. As proprietor and founder, his reputation is as unique as his wines. Volk’s 14 far-reaching influence has earned the accolades constantly paid to him by several generations of winemakers now working on the Central Coast. As a winemaker, Volk’s passion has always been the vineyard itself and his background in fruit science and the desire to grow better, more tasteful, less synthesized fruit is what has driven him. It’s probably the thing that led him here for this area has some of the great vineyards from which he has always purchased grapes. Volk’s dedication has spilled over to this www.winecountrythisweek.com facility, too. Once the headquarters for the old Byron winery (the new Byron is next door), he rebuilt and refitted nearly the entire winery. He even brought in new presses and new crusher-destemmers that would help him produce the wines he has become known for. Volk bought the winery and vineyard in 2004 from the Robert Mondavi Corporation and immediately began to customize it to his specifications. Kenneth Volk’s reputation has found its full reflection here on the Tepusquet Creek. Known all over California as a founder of Central Coast wines, it was his Wild Horse Winery and Vineyards in Paso Robles that produced not only a long-lasting reputation for him, but also a veritable training ground for Central Coast winemakers. Kenneth Volk Vineyards, then, is a realization and the ultimate fruition for a man who is as passionate about fruit as he is about the wine he makes from it. Kenneth Volk Vineyards Tasting Room is located at 5230 Tepusquet Road in Santa Maria, open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.. For more information, call (805) 9387896 or go to www.volkwines.com. Their winery, on top of a hill overlooking a stunning “sea” of vineyards, is called Penman Springs and their vision for the land east of Highway 46 has helped draw attention from around the world to the amazing wines of Paso Robles. Like their fellow boutique winery owners in the region, Carl and Beth believe in the value of handcrafted wines, requiring that every stage of the process of winemaking be done in small lots. In each precise step, every single bottle produced is given the utmost in attention and loving care. No detail is overlooked; no amount of careful planning is skipped in the effort to produce Penman Spring’s award-winning wines. The consequence of such meticulous management of the winemaking process is evident in every glass of these marvelous wines. The vines have been painstakingly planted around an innovative trellis system that maximizes the amount of sun each cluster receives and allows for optimum flavor development and color maturity. Carl, a perfectionist when it comes to growing grapes, has chosen to plant seven varieties that include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot, Syrah, Petite Syrah and Muscat Blanc to produce his artisan wines. And the McCasland’s attention to detail did not stop with their grapes. They hired arguably the most charming hostess on the Central Coast to greet their visitors. Rosie holds court from Friday through Sunday in the Penman Springs tasting room. An emigrant from Nicaragua, Rosie sets a tone for the tasting room that is at once both professional and inviting, gently joking with her guests while dispensing the fine wines of Penman Springs. With her natural warmth and sincerity, she makes everyone feel as though they are not just in a tasting room, but in her “home.” Penman Springs Vineyard is located just off of Highway 46. Exhibiting artists are: Linda Benet, Stephanie Dotson, Linda Ekstrom, Linda Foster, Diane Handloser, Mary Heebner, Thomas Larson, Jill Littlewood, Jennifer Marsh, William McVicar, Lisa Moore, Sara Norquay, Terre Ouwehand, Sandra and Harry Reese, Elena Mary Siff, Nina Warner, Ann Wisehart and Pamela Zwehl-Burke. The artists’ books may be narrative, pictorial or abstract and sequential in content. Since bookartists seek to marry content to form, physical aspects and bindings vary greatly. In the exhibition are examples of signature, petal, side-stitched, eightfold, accordion, portfolio To Santa Maria, Paso Robles and complex bindings. Most of these books have been produced in editions of three or more, and many will be available for purchase. On Sunday, February 24, several of the exhibiting artists will gather for an on-site panel discussion from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Guest curator is Pamela Zwehl-Burke who has made, taught and exhibited artists’ books since the early 1970s. The exhibit will remain on display through April 6, 2008. The Elverhoj Museum of History and Art, located at 1624 Elverhoj Way in Solvang, is open Wednesday and Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m., Friday, Saturday, Sunday noon to 4 p.m. and by appointment.
