HELENA HOSPITAL FOUNDATION GALA 7 2015 GALA HONOREES ELAINE & RICK JONES As 2015 Foundation Gala Honorees Elaine and Rick Jones know first-hand— hope is the feeling each of us wants, especially when faced with a cancer diagnosis. In early 2012, Elaine was diagnosed with Stage II Pancreatic Cancer. After a complex surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, and follow up treatments at the Martin-O’Neil Cancer Center, Elaine is in now three plus years in remission from her cancer diagnosis. Hope changes everything. Through their tireless contributions to our community—whether chairing multiple record-breaking galas, serving on local boards, or giving back generously to education and health care—Rick and Elaine demonstrate leadership in all they touch. They understand the importance of making our community a better place for all to live: 8 2015 ST. HELENA HOSPITAL FOUNDATION GALA “This is our community and St. Helena Hospital is our hospital. The realities of health care are such that we must all do what we can to support a hospital of this caliber.” – Rick Jones Prior to his life in Napa Valley, Rick held successful careers at McKinsey & Company and Safeway. When a traditional retirement didn’t suit Rick’s passion to stay busy, he and his family launched Jones Family Vineyards in 1996. Today, he remains active in the daily operations and business developments of their wine production. Rick is also highly involved with the Napa Valley community and serves and has served on the St. Helena Hospital Foundation and Governing Boards, the Napa Valley Community Foundation, OLE Health, the Napa Valley Vintners, as well as Napa Learns and the national organization, Raising a Reader. Elaine is the perfect match for Rick. She is equally as busy and devotes much of her time to volunteer service for meaningful causes. She has served as the working chair of seven Hospital Foundation Galas, which have earned over $10 million for hospital equipment, capital, and services. She is President of the Board of the UpValley Family Centers, and served on the integration committee to merge the Calistoga and St. Helena Centers. Hope is believing things can change. Together, Rick and Elaine have selected the Napa Valley Breast Health Center as this year’s beneficiary. Hope for a cure for breast cancer is most easily achieved through regular screenings and early detection, along with stateof-the-art technology and the best specialists available. This is the vision that Elaine and Rick share. With your help, this vision will be carried out at the Napa Valley Breast Health Center and a new, higher standard of care will be realized for all who live in the Napa Valley region. 2015 ST. HELENA HOSPITAL FOUNDATION GALA 9 BREAST HEALTH CENTER AT ST. HELENA HOSPITAL The Napa Valley Breast Health Center is a vision supported by Elaine and Rick Jones, carried out in partnership with the Martin O’Neil Cancer Center of St. Helena Hospital. The Center will provide a unique service for Napa County and is enthusiastically supported by area colleagues involved with Women’s Health. Comprehensive breast care begins from the moment a patient comes through the doors at the Napa Valley Breast Health Center. The dedicated team of doctors, nurses, and staff includes an on-site radiologist and an experienced nurse navigator who will provide patients with guidance, sensitive support, information about the treatment process and options, and test results — all in one space. Women (and men) will no longer need to wait weeks to learn the results of a mammogram, only to find out they need to schedule additional testing and possible biopsies that prolong diagnosis even further. A new, streamlined model of care will greatly reduce our patients’ anxiety and stress. Faster turnaround times for testing, review of test results, and development of a personalized treatment plan will result in better outcomes and experiences for all patients. The Napa Valley Breast Health Center will serve as a lifeline for patients, combining state-of-the-art screening capabilities with compassionate, individualized care provided by an exceptional team of specialists—all of whom are committed to promoting breast health and earlier cancer detection. Why Napa County Needs a Breast Health Center: • Excluding cancers of the skin, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the U.S., accounting for 29% of newly diagnosed cancers. • Breast cancer incidence and death rates generally increase with age. 79% of new cases and 88% of breast cancer deaths occurred in women 50 years of age and older. • Every year, more than 200,000 American women are diagnosed with breast cancer. In Napa County, approximately 121 new breast cancer cases are diagnosed every year. 10 2015 ST. HELENA HOSPITAL FOUNDATION GALA • Breast cancer does not only affect women. Each year, approximately 2,350 new cases of invasive breast cancer are diagnosed in men and nearly 20% of those will be fatal. • 3-D mammograms have been found to accurately identify cancers 29% more often than traditional, 2-D digital or film mammography. Just as importantly, women who undergo screening with 3-D mammography are 15% less likely to be called back for further testing due to a suspicious finding, later determined not to be cancer. • 3-D mammography is not currently available in the Napa Valley. With your support tonight, we can change that. Together, we can ensure the latest technology to discover and diagnose breast cancer is available to all who need it within the greater Napa Valley region—right here, right now. 2015 ST. HELENA HOSPITAL FOUNDATION GALA 11 12 2015 ST. HELENA HOSPITAL FOUNDATION GALA LIVE AUCTION 2015 ST. HELENA HOSPITAL FOUNDATION GALA 13 COMING TOGETHER AT MENDING WALL: SO MUCH MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE 1 • Dinner for 8 Guests at Mending Wall Winery Featuring Five Decades of Wines from Piedmont, Italy • White Truffle Dinner Prepared by Esteemed Napa Valley Chef, Sean O’Toole • Hosted by Kathy and Frank Dotzler, Thomas Brown and Genevieve Welsh • A Selection of wines from Thomas Rivers Brown to take home • Four Bottles of La Blonde Chardonnay, presented at the dinner • To be Scheduled on a Mutually Agreeable Date in November or December 2016 Most people think of walls as separating properties. That is the lovely paradox behind Robert Frost’s famous poem, The Mending Wall, which relates the story of neighbors who come together because of a mutual wall. This is the spirit behind Mending Wall Winery, a blissful venue that surprises by delivering so much more than is visible from its exterior. It’s a casually elegant venue that celebrates wine as a unifying force, a special bonding elixir that brings together friends and family, provoking good feelings and laughter. And, you won’t believe the amazing wines you’ll be having at this dinner! Kathy and Frank Dotzler and Thomas Rivers Brown and Genevieve Welsh are digging deep into their cellars to bring out five decades of spectacular wines from the Piedmont region of northern Italy. These are glorious wines made from the Nebbiolo grape; classical world-renowned Barolos and Barbarescos. These remarkable wines demand an equally sensational dinner. In keeping with the singularly distinctive aspects of this celebrated region, this dinner will feature another fabulous Piemonte classic - white truffles! Prepared for you by esteemed Napa Valley chef, Sean O’Toole, whose acclaimed Napa restaurant, TORC, is adored for its sophisticated fare, this dinner will be beyond extravagant. This lavish evening will be made even more incredible by your dynamic hosts. Wine enthusiasts need no introductions to the Dotzlers or to Thomas Rivers Brown. Kathy and Frank have owned Outpost Winery and Vineyard since 2003 and have extended their passion and commitment to Mending Wall. Thomas is one of the most decorated, admired and prolific winemakers. He has received numerous accolades including Food & Wine magazine’s coveted Winemaker of the Year. Thomas’ fine hand has influenced many of continued on the next page... 14 2015 ST. HELENA HOSPITAL FOUNDATION GALA 19 4 THE ELUSIVE GENIUS OF MANFRED KRANKL — SINE QUA NON • A Unique Collection of Four Unobtainable Cult Wines and One Rare Book: ~ One 1.5L 2007 Sine Qua Non “Next of Kyn” Syrah ~ One 750ml 2008 Sine Qua Non “The Duel” Grenache ~ One 750ml 2009 Sine Qua Non “This is Not an Exit” Grenache ~ One 750ml 2010 Sine Qua Non Grenache “Stockholm Syndrome” Grenache ~ One Copy of Manfred Krankl’s The Art of Sine Qua Non This lot is a celebration of the genius of cult winemaker and artist and Manfred Krankl. In 1994, when he and his wife and business partner, Elaine, launched Sine Qua Non, they had a dream to make a wine so distinctive and delicious that it would be “indispensable to wine lovers the world over.” Even these lofty and wishful goals underestimated the phenomenon that Sine Qua Non has become. Each release of these ultra-prized wines, referred to by wine writers as “drinkable art,” causes a feeding frenzy in the wine world. These small production, highly allocated wines are virtually unobtainable except on the secondary market. In fact, the 2007 Next of Kyn reportedly sold out in less than 10 minutes! A self-proclaimed “Rhône Ranger” who loves Grenache and Syrah, Krankl does not adhere to strict French rules and embraces non-Rhone-origin grapes which he believes can work well on a Rhone canvas. Treating every vintage as a completely unique wine, each of the SQN wines enjoys a unique name and original artwork on the label. This quartet of wines is a treasure trove. Together they amassed a whopping 389 points from Robert Parker, with the 2010 “Stockholm Syndrome” Grenache receiving a perfect 100 point score. Each wine has been highly praised for the rich elegance and powerful finish that has become a hallmark of Sine Qua Non wines. They form a lasting tribute to the winemaker’s incredible talent and a remarkable reward for the lucky winning bidder. As a bonus, the winning bidder will also receive a rare copy of Manfred Krankl’s The Art of Sine Qua Non. This book contains beautiful full color glossy pages with portions that fold out and details from Manfred regarding his approach, thoughts and designs for all his inventive labels over continued on the next page... 20 2015 ST. HELENA HOSPITAL FOUNDATION GALA the years, including images of labels that never made it to the bottle. The book was only offered to those lucky few on the exclusive SQN mailing list. Available in a single edition print and never to be released again, this is truly a collectable! Those who love art in both drinkable and admirable form, will never find another collection like this one! Donated by: Claire and Eric Alt, Heather and Greg Melvin, Elaine and Rick Jones 2015 ST. The 2004 La Spinetta Barbera d’Alba Gallina is considered to be one of the best expressions of this lovely varietal. This wine is drinking beautifully and has all the elegance of an aged classed Bordeaux with New World overtones. continued on the next page... 28 2015 ST. HELENA HOSPITAL FOUNDATION GALA The 1982 Château Latour, First Growth. Premier Grand Cru Classe is another Parker 100-point beauty. He called it “the most opulent, flamboyant, and precocious of the northern Medocs” and an amazing wine with lushness and succulence. While gushing with numerous compliments and superlatives, he summed up his review with this admonishment: “Don’t miss it if you are a wine lover!” If you love Sangiovese (and what wine lover doesn’t?), the 2001 Val di Cava Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is a must-have. This remarkable wine is a ripe, ample Brunello with robust fruit and remarkable finesse. It is considered at its peak right now and will remain so for another decade. Parker called it “a beautifully delineated, chiseled wine of the highest level.” In his glowing review of the 2002 Abreu Madrona Ranch, Robert Parker summed it up: this wine “has a level of aromatic intensity and complexity that few in the world can match. If you have access to this world-class wine, don’t hesitate to purchase--it is that special.” He awarded this wine a perfect 100-point score. The 2002 Colgin, Tychson Hill is another wine that Robert Parker thought was a perfect 100-pointer. He calls it a “real tour de force” and conjectures that it tastes like a “hypothetical blend of a first growth Pauillac and a great Napa Cab.” This is a true stunner, voluptuous and opulent, drinking perfectly right now, and ready for you to take home tonight! Chris Ringland is considered by most wine aficionados to be Australia’s premier winemaker. His 2002 Chris Ringland (formerly Three Rivers) Shiraz was awarded a perfect 100-point score by Robert Parker and has been favorably compared with the best Syrahs of Guigal, Chave, Chapoutier, Bratasiuk and Krankl. Noted for its full body and structure this is a wine that will last well into the next three decades. HELENA HOSPITAL FOUNDATION GALA 19 2015 FUND A NEED The best cure for breast cancer is early detection. Regular screenings of forming tumors with state-of-the-art mammography at St. Helena Hospital and the Martin O’Neil Cancer Center is the key to saving lives. 2-D mammogram screenings were the mainstay until the development and FDA approval of Tomosynthesis in 2011, commonly referred to as 3-D mammography. Today, 3-D Mammography is the gold standard in leadingedge breast care. 3-D mammography rotates fully around the breast to take 360 degree pictures in ‘slices’. When these pictures are layered upon each other, an electronic 3-dimensional picture of the breast is revealed. With this optimal image, every type of breast tissue may be effectively evaluated. The increased clarity decreases the number of false positives (commonly found with 2-D images) in patients, and detects even the smallest forming tumors. Additionally, the technology pinpoints an area of concern within one millimeter for more precise biopsies and faster diagnoses, so patients may begin treatment immediately if necessary. Tonight, we can make a significant impact through our support for the Napa Valley Breast Health Center. We can fund the technology and the team to make this service available locally, so patients will no longer need to travel elsewhere for advanced 3-D screenings. But, we cannot do it without your help. Please join us now in making this dream a reality for women and men of the greater Napa Valley region. 2015 ST.
