Dear Santa,
I wonder . . .
Hi, my name is Lindsay. For Christmas I want
ivideo Barbie, go go and

Why does Santa Claus

I want to know why they

Christmas is special to me
because . . .
. . . every year I and my family do a gift exchange list.
That is where we draw a name out of a hat and that is
who you buy a gift for. My great auntie Janet draws the
names and Trista and I are always the first to know. We
love doing this because we never know who we’re buying
for each year.

I wonder . . .
I wonder how old Santa is.
I wonder how long it takes
Santa to fly all around the
world in one night.
I wonder how big Santa’s
work shop is.
I wonder how many buildings are in the North Pole.
I wonder how many reindeer Santa has.

Christmas is special to me
because . . .
. . . I get to spend lots of time with my family, which I
don’t usually get to do because we are never together.
Clarke comes home from university and we get to spend
time decorating the house and tree. I love spending time
with them around Christmas because it makes us feel
closer as a family.

There are many different customs that make the
Christmas season so special. When were some of the customs first used and where did they come from?
Holly
A symbol of peace and joy, the holly tree was often the
site for settling quarrels. Holly also was planted near a
home to frighten off witches and protect it from thunder
and lightning.
Make ahead mashed potatoes
Serve everyone’s favourite holiday comfort food as is
or add bread crumbs and egg and form into crisp, baked
patties.
15 Yukon gold potatoes (about 5 lb.)
1 cup sour cream
1/2 cup butter, cubed
4 green onions, thinly sliced
1/4 cup minced fresh parsley
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
In large pot of boiling salted water, cover and cook
potatoes until tender, about 20 minutes. Drain and return to pot briefly to dry completely. Rice or mash until
smooth. Add sour cream and butter; mix until butter is
melted. Stir in green onions, parsley, salt and pepper.
Transfer to 9x13 glass baking dish or casserole; smooth
top or create design. (Make ahead: cover and refrigerate
for up to 24 hours.) Cover and heat in 400˚F oven until
hot, about 15 minutes, or microwave at high for about 6
minutes. Makes 12 to 14 servings.

. . . decorating and getting ready for Christmas is fun.
Every year I get up on the ladder and put the lights up
and then take them down in the spring, just for the fun
of putting it up again next year. Starting two years ago,
my family goes to Kenaston to cut down a Christmas tree,
and get hot chocolate and cookies. Then we go home and
decorate the tree.

stockings to unpack and
gifts to unwrap. We all

Christmas symbols endure
There are many things that became a regular part of
Christmas festivities and celebrations with time. There
are Christmas toys that became popular gifts for kids and
Christmas ornaments that graced Christmas trees and
other holiday decorations. Christmas stockings became
a part of the celebrations due to the story of kindly Saint
Nicholas or Santa Claus, who is believed to bring toys
for children who wash and hang their stockings near the
fireplace. Stars of all sizes symbolize the divine Christmas Star that made its appearance when the Christ was
born. Christmas angel ornaments are symbolic of divine
angels while Santa Claus is symbolic of not only the kind
patrons that delighted in giving gifts to the poor and the
children to bring happiness to them during the Christmas season but also of the kindness and charity that are

integral part of Christmas spirit.
Christmas cakes and puddings were part of the
Christmas festive meals and Christmas crackers and
candy canes became popular sweets that had a touch of
fun and looked quite interesting to children. Christmas
trees such as firs and pines and other evergreens such as
holly and ivy were symbolic of long life and hope. They
also add cheer to the look of the household. Holly with
its red berries and ivy were fashioned into wreaths and
garlands and were used to decorate the house. Tinsel,
Christmas ornaments and toys were added to Christmas trees to make it look sparkling and livelier. Hanging mistletoe and kissing under it is considered to bring
good luck to the household and spread the message of
love all over the world.

Lisa’s lesson
There once was a little girl named Lisa. She was very
bad. She didn’t listen in class, didn’t get along with her
parents and did not have any friends. One day her mom
told Lisa to make friends and be a better little girl. Christmas was coming up and she was on the naughty list. So
she listened in class, made friends and respected her parents. She was on the good list. For Christmas Lisa got a
Wii, some games, a stuffed animal and some shoes. Now
Lisa knows to be good because then very good things
happen. The end.

Christmas night
Once there were some elves who helped Santa. They
were good little elves. But one night they got tired of working. Then Santa said, “Ho, ho what are you doing?” They
all said they were tired of working! Santa said, “Should
we forget about the kids?” The elves felt sad, they started
working and made presents. Santa said, “Ho, ho, off we
go.” Santa and the elves got presents to the kids.
When Santa and the elves got home, Santa went to
sleep. In the morning, Santa saw how fat he was from
eating those cookies so he did some running. He got so
skinny he stayed that way all year. But on Christmas
night, he got fat again. The end.

Christmas story
The night before Christmas I got out my stocking and
put my name on it. My dad and I got the Christmas tree,
put it up and decorated it. Then I wrote my Christmas list
to Santa. We went to the post office and sent it. Next we
wrapped my cousin’s presents. When we were finished
my mom told us to go to bed. I got my pj’s on, brushed my
teeth and got in my bed. My mom tucked me in and said
good night.
The next morning I woke up and got dressed. We were
going to the city, so we took off. We went to go get more
presents for my cousins.
We got back and I set out the cookies and the milk for
Santa and I got out carrots for the reindeer. It was 9:30 so
I went to bed.
The next morning, I was the first one up I ran upstairs
to wake up my parents and we went straight downstairs
to the living room. I opened my presents. I saw that the
cookies and the milk were all finished and my stocking
was full. I opened all the stuff. That’s how my Christmas
is.

When Christ
was born
Christmas is special to me
because . . .
On the first day of
Christmas a long time
ago, a baby was born,
but not just any baby, a
special baby. One that is
king of the Jews. There
was another king who
thought he was the only
king there was. When the
king found out there was
another king, he wanted to
kill the baby king. There
were three wise men who
came to give the baby king
presents, like gold and
treasure.
When they got there
they bowed down and
worshipped the baby king.
Then they gave him these
presents. That night an
angel came down and told
Joseph to take the baby
king and Mary to Egypt
because the king of Jerusalem is coming to kill the
baby king. So that night
Joseph took Mary and the
baby king to Egypt. They
stayed there until Jesus
was 33 years old. Then
Jesus died on the cross.

Christmas is special to me
because . . .
. . . I get to visit with my relatives in Saskatoon. I always
look forward to it because every year I know that I will
see my family who I haven’t seen since the Christmas
before. My aunts and uncles that come are always play
fighting with me and tickling me to death. I also look forward to eating supper because where we meet every year
is at my Grandma Bobier’s and we can smell and hear
the foods being made.

In a city called Whoville, everyone was shopping for
Christmas. Sara was a sweet little girl who believed in the
Grinch but everyone else didn’t. The Grinch was green
and old. One day Sara decided to go visit the Grinch on
the mountain. Sara got up to the Grinch’s cave and said,
“Hello, hello, is anybody in here?” No one answered. She
said hello again and the Grinch answered and said hello.
He was hiding around the corner. The dog, Max, ran out
and started to bark. The Grinch walked out, and said,
“Who are you and why are you here?”
“My name is Sara and I brought you a Christmas
present.” The Grinch said, “Take it back, and go home.
You shouldn’t be here anyway.” Sara left without the
present. The Grinch opened the Christmas present. It
was a book on Christmas stories. After that he loved
Christmas.

Stocking stuffers
Ever wonder why we hang stockings up by a fireplace
for Santa to stuff with goodies? The tradition goes back
to the original Santa Claus, St. Nicklaus, a bishop.
St. Nicklaus was well known for his generosity and
acts of selfless kindness towards those who needed it.
As legend dictates he heard of a man in his parish who
was about to be forced into selling his two daughters into
prostitution because he didn’t have enough money to pay
for their dowry. Worried for the family’s future he went
out in the evening to see what he could do.
When he came upon the man’s home he sneaked over
to the girls’ bedroom window. Inside he saw the father
sitting near his daughters’ bedside looking worried and
sad. St. Nicklaus took two bags of gold from his robe and
looked for a place to throw them. On the girls’ fireplace
there were stockings hung up to dry above the fire. St.
Nicklaus tossed the bags into the stockings and quietly
walked into the darkness. The father looked up when
he heard a noise and went to the window to find no one
there but he did find the gold in the girls’ stockings. He
was overjoyed because there was enough to give each a
fine dowry to marry.
St. Nicklaus’ acts of kindness echoed through time
and eventually he became the symbol of Christmas. He
is recognized in many countries as the one who brings
toys to all the good children in the world.

Christmas Day
Once upon a time on a Christmas Eve, a little boy
named John couldn’t wait ‘til morning to open presents.
At 9:30 he had to go to bed but as soon as his parents went
to sleep, he moved to the couch to wait for Santa. After
one hour passed, Santa still didn’t come. John began to
feel sleepy and soon fell asleep. All of a sudden, Santa
poofed into the room with a big sack of toys. Santa filled
the stockings and every space under the tree. When morning came John woke up and saw an XBOX 360 sitting
there with 10 games. Right away he hooked it up and
started playing it for the next week! One day he came out
for breakfast for the first time and said, “I am bored with
my XBOX 360.”
Just then he noticed a new game and raced to his room
with a plate of cookies and played XBOX 360 for the rest
of the year! The end.

Rolling the dice
with board games
With the hustle and bustle of work,
school and extra curricular activities,
the holiday season seems to creep
up faster every year. Faced with the
daunting task of finding that perfect
gift, parents and children can spend
hours scouring the shops - often at
the expense of quality time with the
family.
This year, experience the gift of
laughter and time through the chance
to shine at board games.
The night before Christmas, instead
of kids twiddling their thumbs waiting for Santa to arrive, break out one
of your favourite games to raise the
fun level! Monopoly, Twister, Cranium,
Risk, Settlers of Catan and others are
all great ways to pass the time.
Start a new holiday tradition. After
the big turkey dinner is polished off,
Santa’s little helpers
Green hats, big ears, very short and little fears.
They love to help and never frown,
Lady elves wear little gowns.
When Santa’s help is much needed,
The little guys surely pleaded.
The seven reindeer also help,
Santa Claus and everyone else.
So when Christmas comes,
Santa will be set.
And the little kids,
Will be very happy, I bet!
Allie Schmidt
Gr. 7D, WES
I wonder . . .
instead of laying down on the couch,
grab a game and get playing.
Make your holiday party outrageously fun. Whether it is a work
party or a crazy New Year’s Eve bash,
there are numerous board games to
help break the ice and add some spice
to the season.
Turn snow day into game day.
When the weather outside is frightful and the family feels snowed in, let
the kids take over with a board game.
Instead of feeling gloomy, the family
can get into the competitive mode by
trying to out duel others with a game
of Trouble or perhaps even the Game
of Life.
Whatever the case, spending some
quality time with family over a board
game will not only be an enjoyable experience but also loads of fun.

Christmas is special to me
because . . .
. . . we get to decorate the tree together as a family. We
decorate our tree a couple weeks in advance of Christmas
holidays. We usually set up the tree, get all of the decorations out, turn on some Christmas music, and use almost
every one! I remember a year or two ago, while we were
decorating the tree, our cat, Domino, started to climb the
tree. He knocked the tree over, so we got to decorate it
twice that year! That’s why it’s a special time for me.

Christmas Eve
No matter where you spend the holiday season,
know that our best wishes are with you.
Everything was quiet. I was sleeping when I heard
“bam”. It was coming from downstairs, so I crawled out
of bed. I crawled down the hall and peaked through the
crack. Then I saw Santa Claus and his elves. I went down
stairs and there he was in real life, Santa Claus!
He ate my cookies and milk. The reindeer ate my veggies. I was so happy that Santa liked my cookies and milk.
I was crawling down the stairs. Then I sneaked over to
the chair and hid behind it. I was watching him in amazement. I was so happy that Santa came to my house early.
I looked out of the window and there he was, Rudolph! I
went outside and then they were all there. Dancer and
Prancer, Comet, Cupid, Donor, Vixen, Blitzen and Dasher. I climbed in the sleigh and off we went. Wow, there it
was all of Watrous. When we came back it was time for
Santa to leave. I went back to hiding. Then when he left, I
went up to bed to sleep.
Merry Christmas.

Christmas is special to me
because . . .
. . . I get to spend time with my family. The reason this is
so special is that I don’t get to see some of my extended

Christmas is so special to me is because we are so carefree for a few days of the year and that is so amazing for
me. That is why my Christmas is so special to me.

THE WATROUS MANITOU • MONDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2010 • 13B
Dear Santa Claus,
We are the Kindergarten class (odd day) from Watrous
Elementary School. We are all helpful five-year-old boys
and girls and live in Watrous or on a farm near Watrous.
Our teacher is Mrs. Bells
At school we were talking about our town and things
we would like Watrous to have. We decided to write a letter to you telling you some of the things we would love
to have in Watrous. We know you cannot give Watrous
everything we would like it to have for Christmas, but we
will work on helping to get some of the things ourselves.
This is just a wish list of things we would like our town to
have some day.
The first thing we would really like is a bigger playground at our school with more slides, swings, monkey
bars and other toys. When we are adults, we might be
able to help build some of these things.
We would also love to have more snow in winter. If we
had more snow, we could make snow forts, a huge snowman, more snowballs, a snow cactus and a snow taxi. We
would also have more snow to go sledding on. We would
also like the sun to shine more in winter so we had some
nice bright days outside to play. We also thought it would
be cool if we could have a rainbow in the sky that would
never go away! It would look so pretty!
More houses in Watrous would be awesome because
some of our windows keep leaking in water and cold air.
We would like to have horses to ride in town. In the winter, we would love to go swimming, so we would need to
have an indoor pool that we could swim in all year long!
If we had more TVs in Watrous, we could watch more
of our favourite shows like Transformers, Backyardigans
and The Suite Life of Zach and Cody. It would be great to
have more places to eat like Dairy Queen, McDonald’s,
Burger King and Boston Pizza. We think we would also
need more Christmases to get all this stuff for our town!
The last thing we would really like to have is more
friendship in our town. It would be good if everyone
could be friends. We decided we could help you with this,
because we could work on being friends with everyone
we know. Everyone who is little or big in our town can do
this!
Thank you Santa, we all look forward to seeing you this
Christmas. Merry Christmas!

Hints for
stocking
stuffers
(NAPS) - You do not have to lose your
shirt or wear out your shoes trying to find
something fit to fill your loved ones’ stockings this holiday season. Here are some
hints that may help:
• Many may have a warm spot for such
hot items as winter gloves, scarves and
mittens, exotic socks and cozy slippers.
• You can also stock stockings with
pockets in mind. Try coin purses, wallets
and card holders.
• For the cook on your list, consider pot
holders and mitts, kitchen towels, mugs,
measuring cups, refrigerator magnets
and small kitchen tools.
• Get on the road to ingenuity by giving
a tire gauge, car organizer or a promise to
wash the car.
• Often welcome are decorative accessories such as scented candles, potpourri
and tiny picture frames.
• Gift certificates for stores, restaurants
and movies are a way to fit a big present
into a little stocking.
All the best in 2011 from these local home-based businesses!

Christmas Eve
On Christmas Eve we hang our stocking by the fireplace. All is quiet as Santa places the presents under
the tree and fills the stockings with candy. As he leaves
through the chimney and gets on his sleigh he calls, “Ho,
ho Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.”
On Christmas Day all the kids get out of bed and run
to the tree. They open all their presents and think that
was the best Christmas ever and will be for a long time.

I wonder . . .
I want to know why we
have Christmas.
Every year what happens
up in the North Pole.
Why are the Christmas

How big is the sleigh?
Why is Santa called St.
Nicholas?

Christmas is special to me
because . . .
from all of us at
WATROUS CONCRETE LTD.
. . . I get to go see all my extended family from Yorkton, Whitecourt, and Alberta. We get to visit and catch
up with each other. I also get to spend my Christmas in
Yorkton rather than Watrous. This makes my Christmas
special because I never get to see my extended family and
so it is a great time to enjoy the experience while it lasts.
It is also special because I like going to Yorkton and visiting in a different place than staying in Watrous every
year. That is why Christmas is special to me.

Who sang a very merry song

Christmas Eve
Chocolate almond thumbprint cookies
One Christmas Eve Santa was sick and could not deliver presents. He called his brother John. John came
right over. He brought his elf friend William. When
Santa asked them if they could take his place, they said
yes. They were excited that Santa picked them. Santa
went with John and William to load up the sleigh. Then
he hitched the reindeer. He told them they would have to
carry John and William, but they said no! Then he told
them he would give them some Scooby snacks. They then
agreed. John and William did great. After they delivered
the presents they had a great supper by Mrs. Claus.

Chocolate filling:
42 Hershey’s Kisses Brand Milk Chocolate with almonds
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 tablespoon Hershey’s Cocoa
1 tablespoon softened butter
2 1/2 teaspoons milk
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Heat oven to 350˚F and remove the wrappers from the
milk chocolates. Beat together butter, sugar, egg yolks
and vanilla extract together until well blended. Stir together flour, cocoa and salt in a separate bowl and mix
into the butter mixture. Roll dough into one-inch balls
and roll in chopped almonds. Place on an ungreased
cookie sheet and press thumb gently into the centre of
each cookie. Bake 18 to 20 minutes or until set. Remove
from cookie sheet and cool completely.
Prepare chocolate filling by combining powdered sugar, cocoa, butter, milk and vanilla extract in a small bowl.

the cooled cookies. Gently press one milk chocolate into
the centre of each cookie.
Makes 42 cookies.

I am so excited I can barely breathe
