Nineteen Stallions Added
to KWPN Collection
Durrant: Stallion Selection Champion,
Performance Test Winner
The spring performance test recently came to a close, with the new approved stallions presented to the
public on May 24th. A total of seven jumpers, seven dressage horses, one Gelder horse, two harness horses,
one Hackney, and one Thoroughbred were approved for breeding - a considerable group following a
performance test with high-quality stallions.
On Tuesday, May 24th, the young stallions
were tacked up for the last time in the
performance test to demonstrate their
talent in front of a large audience; and the
older, previously registered stallions were
presented in-hand. In addition, the breeders of the stallions approved this spring
were given due recognition. According to
Arie Hamoen, Chairman of the Stallion
Selection Committee for riding horses:
“We started this performance test with few
stallions, so we’re very satisfied that we
could approve almost half of them.”
Hamoen believes the new stallions supplement the existing collection: “With the
dressage stallions, we reaped benefits in
the walk, which remains a concern in dressage horse breeding; and with respect to
the jumpers, we approved a lot of very
complete stallions.”
The spring performance test for threeyear-old riding horse stallions spans 70
days. The stallion selection committee
uses the full period to consider the horses
for approval and makes its decisions
based on each stallion’s performance over
the entire test. “In the final evaluation, the
stallions’ performance, in general, was
representative of their performance
throughout the test,” according to
Hamoen.
Several Paths to Approval
Every February, qualified stallions at the
selection in ‘s-Hertogenbosch are invited
6
Durrant, the stallion selection champion, is living up to expectations. He was approved with 83.5 points, and all
his jumping scores were at least an 8.
to the performance test. Registered
parties of these stallions may choose to
enter their horses in the spring- or fall test
that year or the spring test of the following
year, when their stallions turn four. Older
stallions invited for testing must participate in the first available test.
Alternatively, older stallions presented in
the first round viewing may proceed
through the selection process by way of
the VION Cup or Pavo Cup. The stallion
selection committee invites horses which
excel in these competitions to participa-
te in the performance test directly.
Furthermore, stallions which demonstrate excellence in the sport may be
presented again for approval. Such was
the case of the World Champion Astrix
(s.Obelisk), who was approved after
earning high scores in this year’s spring
performance test.
This year, a total of 40 jumper stallions
were selected for the performance test,
including four older stallions which participated in the first round viewing and then
received an invitation to the performance

test. In the end, the Thoroughbred Hopalong Cassidy xx (s.Strong Statement) was
granted recognized status, and Q. Breitling LS (s.Quintero) was approved. Six
three-year-old jumper stallions were also
approved this spring.
In addition, 25 three-year-old dressage
stallions were selected in February for the
performance test, nine of which began the
test this spring. Four of these were approved. Two older stallions, Astrix (s.Obelisk)
and Connaisseur (s.Con Amore), were also
among those selected in February, and
both were approved. Furthermore, fouryear-old Cover Story (s.Oscar) - last year’s
stallion selection champion - participated
in the spring performance test. He, too,
received approval for breeding.
Two Gelder stallions were selected in
‘s-Hertogenbosch for the performance
test. One was eight-year-old W V Saron,
who was invited to the five-day test in
Stegeren and subsequently approved;
the other was Dior (s.Sander), the threeyear-old stallion selection champion. He
is expected to begin his performance
test this fall.
The stallion selection committee for
harness horses invited eight stallions to
the performance test in Stegeren. Six of
these participated in the spring test. The
Hackney stallion Wentworth Ebony (s.
Heldon Mistrel) was awarded recognized
status, and Colonist (s.Vulcano) and Ditisem (s.Roy M) were approved.
Jumper Stallions
Seven jumper stallions took part in the
final evaluation of the performance test,
and six were approved. The highest
scores were awarded to the 2011 stallion
selection champion, Durrant (Warrant x
Tanagra stb s.Voltaire), registered to
Egbert Schep of Tull en ’t Waal, Kees van
den Oetelaar of Schijndel, Team Nijhof of
Geesteren, and Haras Cooper of Sao
Paolo, Brazil. The stallion was approved
with 83.5 points, with no less than 8s for
all his jumping scores. For the canter,
form, scope, and jumping talent, he
scored 8.5s; and he received good scores
for the walk, trot, carriage and balance. In
‘s-Hertogenbosch, the stallion selection
committee described him as an extremely
good jumper with textbook-classic form.
Bred by Piet Keunen of Venlo, Durrant is
living up to expectations.
Dynamo (Andiamo x Fonelle “R” s.Winningmood van de Arenberg, breeder: W.H.
Leisink of Panningen), who scored two
points less than Durrant, performed convincingly throughout the jumping sections of
the test and received 8.5s for form, scope,
and jumping talent. Offspring of the Grand
Prix jumper Andiamo are beginning to
garner more attention in the sport. Winningmood van de Arenberg, Dynamo’s grandsire, is also Grand Prix qualified. Registered
parties Gertjan van Olst of den Hout and
J.J. Schalekamp of Dordrecht have an interesting approved stallion in Dynamo.
The Cardento son Dakar VDL (d.Nisolde
keur s.Nimmerdor), a half-brother of the
KWPN-approved stallion Boss (s.Indoctro), the 2009 stallion selection champion,
passed the performance test with 79
points and received the highest score for
scope: 8.5. He also earned many 8s. Bred
by W. Abbring of Onnen, the gray stallion
is registered to VDL Stud, as his name
suggests. His dam Nisolde, a past Central
Inspection champion in Groningen, is also
the dam of the international jumper
Sunsolde (s.Corland).
Dutch Design, a Dollar de la Pierre son,
was approved after scoring 82.5 points.
His greatest weakness is a trot which has
little rhythm and regularity. In the canter,
however, the son of the top index mare
Harmonie elite preferent prestatie sport(jump) (s.Calvados) is convincing, and the
chestnut stallion scored a 9 for scope. For
years, Harmonie has led the breeding
value index for mares with offspring in the
sport, thanks to her international sport
career under Leon Thijssen and the performance of her offspring, such as her international show jumper daughter Manet (s.
Colino) and three ZZ-level jumpers. Dutch
Design is registered to his breeder, Martien
Liefhebber of Hoornaar, and Kees van den
Oetelaar shares registration of the stallion.
Dakota VDL, a Casall-son out of Naomi II,
a full sister to the BWP-approved stallion
Cicero van de Helle (s.Contender), was
also approved. He passed the performance test with 78.5 points with very
consistent scores - almost all 8s. Michael
Eitel of Freihung-Thansüss, Germany, is
the stallion’s breeder. Dakota VDL is the
second stallion approved in this test that is
registered to VDL Stud.
Cantos is the sire of Dantos HBC (d.Varaya ster s.Numero Uno, breeder: G.R. Turksema of Roden), who was also approved.
He boasts a good canter for which he
received an 8, and he scored an 8 for
scope as well. The stallion, registered to
HBC Stal in Boijl, passed the performance
test with a total of 76.5 points.
The only jumper stallion to perform in the
final presentation but not receive approval was Dominko (Whitaker x Waminka
ster PROK IBOP-jump s.Numero Uno,
breeder: J. Wanink of Rossum). The stallion was not sufficiently convincing in the
jumping sections of his test and in the
use of his body.

Dressage Stallions
Five three-year-old dressage stallions participated in the spring performance test, four
of which were approved. Among these, two
scored more than 80 points each.
Don Tango (Contango x Oronia keur sport(dres) s.Jazz, breeder: J.A. van Boven of
St. Michielsgestel), a full brother to one of
Holland’s most successful Small Tour
horses Vontango B, passed with the
highest scores. Don Tango’s dam Oronia
was also a Small Tour competitor. Bred by
De Dalhoeve of Wamel, the stallion
received no score lower than an 8; and for
carriage/balance and rideability/attitude,
the complete dark bay stallion earned 9s.
Although he was deemed class C due to
osteochondritis in his right hock, the stallion selection committee believes that Don
Tango is of sufficient quality to compensate for this shortcoming.
Dorado (Krack C x Zinni van de Westen
keur s.Rousseau, breeder: C. Kikkert of
Den Burg), who placed third in the Championship in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, does not
deny his lineage. His granddam Lotus (s.
Donnerhall) is a half-sister to Hans Peter
Minderhoud’s top mare Exquis Nadine (s.
TCN Partout). With 82.5 points and 8.5s
for the walk, canter, rideability, attitude,
and dressage talent, the stallion was easily
approved. He is registered to his breeder
and Ad Valk of Gorinchem.
Diëgo (d.Ballerina II s.Don Gregory, breeder: M. Berkmortel of Helmond), who
passed his test 79.5 points, is the first
approved son of the Small Tour stallion
Negro. Diëgo scored almost all 8s, making
him a complete dressage horse. The black
stallion is the second horse registered to
Gertjan van Olst to be approved in this
performance test.
The Vivaldi son Dream Boy (d.Resia elite
s.Ferro) has a fantastic canter, for which
he scored an 8.5. For carriage/balance,
rideability/attitude, and dressage talent,
the black stallion was rewarded with 8s.
He was approved with 78.5 points. Tim
Coomans of Oud-Beijerland, Dream Boy’s
breeder, shares registration of the stallion
with Jacques Maree of Honselersdijk and
Koen Brinkman of Oud Ootmarsum.
Harness Horse Stallions
The performance test for harness horse stallions likewise ended on May 24th. Two stallions were approved, both with good scores.
Ditisem (Roy M x Roswitha keur sport(harn) s.Manno), a former national foal
champion, won the 2011 stallion selection
championship for harness horses. In his
performance test, he earned the highest
scores for suspension, hind leg use, and
willingness/desire to work: 8.5. Bred by and
registered to the Muggen family of Beilen,
the silver dapple stallion is a brother of the
celebrated show horse Zomooi.
Four-year-old Colonist (Vulcano x Velony II
ster s.Patijn, breeder: Wim Cazemier of
Nuis), a product of the successful dam-line
of Patijn and Ganges, was convincing all
around. A stallion with no apparent weak
Astrix 528003 05.08852 Stb
points, he earned his highest score for front
leg action: 9. Colonist received 8.5s for his
front end, carriage, desire to work, and
overall picture as a harness horse. The stallion is registered to his breeder, Wim Cazemier, the 2010 Breeder of the Year, and the
Van Manen brothers of Ede.
According to Henk Rootveld, who chairs
the stallion selection committee for harness
horses: “The stallion selection committee is
satisfied with this year’s new harness
horses. Colonist is a modern stallion, and
he scored high across the board. Ditisem
has strong conformation, a very keen attitude, and an exceptionally good hind leg.
That last trait he inherited from both his sire
and dam’s side, which increases the likelihood of him passing on the trait to his
offspring. In addition, these two stallions
come out of dam-lines that have produced
a lot of good breeding- and show horses.”
The recognition of the large Hackney stallion
Wentworth Ebony following a short evaluation in Stegeren is significant in the quest to
expand the rather limited bloodlines in
harness horse breeding. Rootveld: “Wentworth Ebony can help combat in-breeding
and likely can do other positive things. The
black stallion has a nice temperament and a
very willing attitude. With his power, stride
length, action, carriage, and attitude, he’s a
Hackney that should pass on a few good
traits.” These new stallions give harness
horse breeders three more interesting
choices and help breeders achieve an
optimum in-breeding percentage.
