[ how to ... ]
Chasing the Crown
(or How to Win Miss USA)
What would you do for $250,000
in cash and prizes?
I know what I did. I stood onstage, halfnaked, in front of a viewing audience of
300 million people.
At the time, some might have said I’d
lost my mind. Maybe I had, but once
you enter the world of national pageant
competition, a certain amount of sanity
is thrown out of the window, and what
becomes foremost in your mind is winning
the crown.
But strutting my stuff onstage in a
hot-pink bikini didn’t win me the title of
Miss USA. No such luck. In fact, I had
to speak. Imagine that. I had to be up on
current events. I also had to be interviewed
by celebrities, and I had to make sense.
Most people think pageants are all
about exposing skin, donning big hair
and giving lip service to saving the world.
Maybe in some cases, but overall it’s a
tough business.
If you’ve ever dreamed of competing in a
pageant, get ready for the ride of your life.
If you’re going to give it a try, here’s the
inside line on how to succeed – begin with
a clear focus. You can’t go in “half-bootie”!
(Diction altered to earn “G” rating for this
magazine.) You have to create a plan of
action. And when you think about it, that’s
actually a good lesson for life.
How many of us really know what our
goals are and have a concrete plan set up
to achieve them? Forget about comparing
yourself to the other contestants, find out
what makes you unique.
In the pageant world, there are three
facets of competition. These are evening
gown, swimsuit and interview. You have to
nail all three categories to win. As in life,
if something is off kilter, like your physical
well-being or your spiritual side – even
your morals – then your focus gets out
of whack, right? The same theory applies
to pageants.
Get in physical shape, and you’ll knock
’em dead in swimsuit and evening gown
competition. But the most crucial part of
Allen and Shannon Chesnut Gonzaga
competition is by far the interview. Have
you ever seen a beautiful woman from
afar, only to hear her open her mouth and
think, “Ugggh!”?
The key here is to know your stuff.
Share your views on current events, but
don’t cram your opinions down someone’s
throat. Some people may have a different
view of the world than you do. Ask
yourself what makes you tick. Who or
what do you love, dislike and even admire,
and why?
“Why” is the question that will get you
every single time.
Last, but not least, listen. Interviews
are not meant to be one sided. You have
to listen and share. Again, it’s sort of like
normal life: you’ve got to give to get.
And, oh yeah, don’t forget to suck it in,
and smile.
— Lu Parker ’90
Parker was crowned Miss USA in 1994. Her
final question: do you feel an athlete who has
been accused of a crime but not found guilty
should be able to compete in the Olympics
(asked in light of the Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya
Harding controversy)? She currently works as
a news anchor in Los Angeles.

Catching a Break

Matt Griesemer received his master’s degree
José Lemos ’01 lowers himself
into another large pot. His job is simple:
clean the insides. As he scrubs away sticky
pasta residue, he softly sings to himself,
enjoying the unusual acoustics of his
metallic environment. That enjoyment,
however, is fleeting. While Lemos
appreciates his job at the pasta factory, he
dreams, not surprisingly, of performing in
venues larger than a man-sized pasta bin.
What got Lemos into that pasta bin to
begin with also got him out: talent and a
little luck.
As a child growing up in Bagé, Brazil,
Lemos did not start out as the best singer in
the children’s choir, but he was the loudest.
His music teachers often rewarded his
enthusiasm by giving him the solos.
As his voice matured, so did his music
appreciation. While other kids clamored
for pop music acts such as Boy George
and Duran Duran, Lemos browsed a
different section of the local music shop.
At age 12, he purchased his first cassette –
international opera sensation Maria
Callas’s selected arias. “I wasn’t surrounded
by opera at home,” Lemos admits. “My
mother listened to Elvis. But when I heard
opera in town, it just spoke to me. It was
so beautiful.”
And then began a series of happy
accidents. After buying that cassette, Lemos
landed a spot in an adult choir. Then,
after the choir’s performance of Lehár’s
opera The Merry Widow, a vocal coach in
the audience took note of his strong voice.
For an entire year, Lemos worked with
that music teacher on his vocal technique,
singing only two songs from an Italian
book of arias.
Prospects for a full-time musical career
in Bagé were bleak, so after graduating
from high school, Lemos taught at a local
elementary school. But, he still practiced
and performed in various evening recitals.
Then came The Break, Part I.
In the audience one night was a most
unlikely patron of the arts. Impressed by
Lemos’s countertenor range, he offered
Lemos a job in his pasta factory in
Montevideo, a city with greater musical
opportunities. The job cleaning pasta
bins eventually turned into a waitstaff
position at the factory owner’s new
restaurant, where Lemos served and sang
to the customers.
[ alumni profile ]
During this time, Lemos continued to
perfect his technique with more evening
lessons and performances. Then came The
Break, Part II. Music chair Steve Rosenberg
was in town for a concert, and at the afterparty, he heard Lemos singing a few Baroque
arias. “Steve asked me if I would be willing
to learn Renaissance music, his particular
area of interest. And if so, there might be
a scholarship,” he remembers. “Without
hesitation, without even knowing the
particulars of Renaissance music, I told him,
‘Of course, I would.’”
One scholarship, one summer-long crash
course in English, a few tearful goodbyes
and nearly 5,000 miles later, Lemos was in
Charleston – a place he had never heard of
before he met Rosenberg. “The College was
great. Every music major gets an opportunity
to perform here,” he explains. “You can
study and practice all of your life, but if you
don’t perform, you don’t really know the
music. More than half of what you do you
learn while doing it onstage.”
After graduation, Lemos completed a
master’s in vocal performance at the New
England Conservatory, and then, The Breaks
came in quick succession. He was a soloist
with the Boston Symphony and also won
first prize and an audience prize at the
2003 Baroque Singing Competition in
Chimay, Belgium. More doors began to
open. He performed at the Tanglewood
Festival in 2004 and was featured in
The New York Times for his role as Oberon
in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
“This is what I am meant to do,” Lemos
says with a smile. “Performing … connecting
with an audience … creating that energy …
telling a story through music.”
Today, Lemos has “told stories” on three
continents and counting; he serves as the
main guest artist with the Baltimore Consort
(a touring early-music ensemble); and he
garners praise from audiences and critics
alike for his voice and stage presence. Most
recently, he sang at the National Gallery
in Washington, D.C., and then played his
favorite opera role, Ottone in L’incoronazione
di Poppea, to packed houses at the Seattle
Center’s Intiman Playhouse.
Not a bad step up from a pasta bin.

It’s tough not to envy
Julie Simsar ’02 her job. As a professional
kitesurfer, she works in some of the world’s
most exotic seaside destinations, and
“work” itself may be a relative term, here.
Whipping through the surf, skating across
the air – acrobat, sailor, dancer –
Julie does for a living what the rest
of us might do for fun.
Of French and Turkish descent,
Simsar grew up in Paris but spent
most of her vacations on the
water. She was athletic from the
get-go, learning to ride horses,
water ski and snow ski at a young
age. She discovered windsurfing
in Corsica, and she learned to
sail sloop-rigged boats here at the
College, where she took beginner’s
and advanced classes, worked
at the College’s marina and
sailed often with friends. Shortly
after graduating with degrees in
international business and German
(truly a citizen of the world, she
now speaks German, French,
Spanish and English), Simsar gave
kiteboarding a try. “It looked like
a blast,” she says. “And it was.”
Simsar found what she was
born to do, and she hasn’t looked
back since. Sailing high above the
swells, with the instincts of a pilot
and the finesse of a kestrel, Simsar
toys with gravity. She hangs there,
suspended, then alights and jets
across the water. Trailing wake, she
carves and shears; she swerves; she
switches back; she launches off a
crest to upend everything again.
Now avian, now marine; now
pelican, now dolphin … Simsar doesn’t
have a problem with workplace morale.
Her dedication to the sport is paying
off. As she has made a name for herself,
sponsors have taken note: Liquid
Force now sponsors her gear; Musiltin
Zone, her clothing; Ozone Travel, her
trips; and Smith, her sunglasses. Their
support makes it possible for her to
travel to competitions and explore new
kiteboarding destinations.
These days Simsar calls San Juan,
Puerto Rico, home – that is, when she
is home. Last year she competed on the
Kitesurf Pro World Tour, which found
what you love and love what you do, if
you are talented and determined enough to
make an occupation of your passion, work
and play can start to look a lot alike. After
the tour, Simsar kept going, traveling to
Brazil and then the southwest of Turkey –
to explore new cultures, surf new
waters and, she says, “to have
some fun.”
All of which begs a question: Is
there anything about her life that
isn’t fun? “Traveling the globe on
a tight budget, with 130 pounds
of gear, can present its challenges,”
she says. One of the tougher
“commutes” she made on the
circuit last year involved getting
from the small Greek island of
Parros to Essaouira, Morocco – in
a rather roundabout way. Because
all jet and boat traffic had been
cancelled in the Mediterranean
(thanks to high winds, ironically
enough – maybe she should have
surfed over?), Simsar had to first
take an eight-hour boat ride across
the Aegean to Athens, then fly
to London (precisely the wrong
direction). After an 18-hour
layover in London, she was able
to fly down to Marrakesh, where
she had to then make a two-hour
midnight cab ride by herself to
Essaouira. The competition was
set to begin in a few short hours.
After a taxing itinerary even by
contemporary standards of travel,
Simsar overcame her travel fatigue
and managed to finish second in
freestyle and first in hang time.
As she waits for this year’s
tour to gear up, Simsar is working on
two new tricks: the Blind Judge and the
Powered Mobe. The tricks involve “back
rotations,” “fast double-back rotations” and
“airpasses.” That is, acrobatic wonders –
and certainly fitting additions to the
repertoire of someone who is an acrobatic
wonder in her own right.

Morocco, Greece, Venezuela and New
Caledonia. By tour’s end, she was ranked
first in long distance, first in hang time,

With these successes under her kite
belt, Simsar might have taken a break.
Certainly she deserved one. But if you do
