Fall 2016
THE FINISH LINE:
2016 Summer Reading Challenge
Sports were definitely the theme of Summer 2016 –– from the Olympic Games in Brazil to “On Your
Mark, Get Set…Read,” the Summer Reading Challenge at the County Library.
The Challenge kicked off on Saturday, June 4 at the Library’s Viridian Event Center and Veterans
Memorial Park with a flag ceremony by the West Jordan Exchange Club in cooperation with the West
Jordan Fire Department. The flag ceremony also included a moment of silence in memory of Utah
children who died as a result of abuse. Following this tribute, was the National Anthem, sung by one of
our fabulously talented teen services librarians, Heidi Tice. Both presentations were incredibly humbling
and a great reminder of the importance of safe places, such as the County Library.
The Kick Off party went from 10 am–2 pm and there were tons of activities, crafts and performances
for kids, teens, adults and families to enjoy. Most importantly, thousands of library users had the
opportunity to sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge and to count their participation at the Kick
Off as their first reading record activity.
Sign-ups continued throughout the summer with the majority of our branches surpassing last year’s
sign-up numbers. Overall, approximately 60,000 people signed up for the Challenge.
Library users of all ages expressed enthusiasm and gratitude for our new and improved reading records,
the multiple activity options, amazing prize selection and the prerogative to increase their chances of
winning by completing marathon reading records.
Another great component to this year’s Challenge was Read it Forward –– an opportunity for every
reader to go the extra yard by helping other library users pay down their fines. The process was simple:
stop by the library, let a library team member know you’d like to “Read it Forward,” earn $1 in fine
waivers (maximum of $5 per card) for every 30 minutes of reading, let a library team member know
when you’re done reading and place a voucher in the “Read it Forward” jar. Waivers could be applied to
the account of the patron who was reading or to another library user’s account, as long as the patron was
present. This program is proof that reading pays!
Anyone who participated in the Summer Reading Challenge also received the benefit of $2 off
admission at the Natural History Museum of Utah. This amazing County Library perk is available
through September 30, 2016.
The Natural History Museum of Utah is also where finishers of the Summer Reading Challenge can
celebrate their success. Free admission tickets were awarded to anyone who finished. This year, for the
first time, we are hosting an ‘adult only’ Library Night at the Museum on Wednesday, September 7.
We are also hosting our standard Library Days on Saturday, September 10 and Wednesday,
September 14.
Early literacy and lifelong learning is a priority for us and our Summer Reading Challenge continues
to be an effective and engaging program for library users of all ages and abilities. If you weren’t able to
participate this year, don’t fret. The Challenge will be back again in 2017 with a new and exciting theme
that we know you’ll love!
Keeping After School Cool
at the County Library
Now Presenting: An Opportunity for
New Library Presenters
Chess Club. Anime Club. Science Club. Pokémon Club.
Lego Club. Gamers’ Club. These are just a few of the after
school programs available to teens at the County Library.
Each day after school, beginning at approximately 3 pm,
our branches begin a variety of programs designed to
bring teens together in a fun and innovative learning
environment.
Whether your teen is into books, science, fandom,
technology, art, exercise, games or movies, our programs
are sure to spark their interest while feeding their minds
and their bellies – yes, their bellies.
Every day after school, between approximately 3:30-4:30,
several of our branches participate in Kids’ Café – a free
afternoon snack and activity for kids 0-18 years old.
The County Library also offers opportunities for teens,
ages 12-17, to participate in Teen Advisory Boards. Teens
on these Boards help guide programs at their community
library and often have significant leadership roles in
system-wide teen programs and events.
Teens interested in developing presentation, project
management and leadership skills are encouraged to
participate in our Teens Teach program. This new program
– piloted by Youth Services Librarian Spring Lavellee at
our Magna Library – provides teens the opportunity to be
paid for developing and presenting a program to their peers
and other teens. Due to the program’s success at Magna
Library, Teens Teach is now being offered at several other
branches across the Salt Lake Valley.
To learn more about teen programs, Kids’ Café, Teen
Advisory Board and Teens Teach, stop by one of our
libraries, visit slcolibrary.org or give Customer Service a

Salt Lake County
Library Services Directory
Storytime is one of the County Library’s most popular
programs. At the beginning of each traditional school
year, typically in September, we ramp up our storytime
programming to ensure our youngest Library users and
their caregivers have a variety of daytime early learning
opportunities.
The role of storytime is to inspire
lifelong reading habits, encourage
a love of children’s literature,
decrease the word gap, increase
play and to promote bonding
between children and their
caregivers.
Five easy steps
to make a reader
every day.
• Talk
• Sing
• Read
• Write and
• Play
The County Library provides
a wide array of storytime
experiences – in English and in
Spanish – for babies and children.
These programs include stories,
finger plays, action rhymes, music, movement activities, art
activities, puppets and creative dramatics.
To find a storytime near you, check our online calendar,
calendar.slcolibrary.org, stop by your neighborhood library
or give Customer Service a call: 801.943.4636

our incredibly talented librarians, go to:

Haunted Forest
When Harold’s mom sends him into the forest to
pick gooseberries for a pie he has a few concerns: Isn’t
the forest haunted? Doesn’t it have giant snakes, furry
spiders, and ferocious alligators? Harold faces all of
his fears so he can have his pie – he may even invite a
few of the creatures home to share it. Haunting good
time for little creatures.
