go through a series of slides and a
quiz to review the topic of “common
denominators” before continuing with
the lesson on adding fractions.
Note to teacher
For students to understand how to add
fractions with different denominators, they
need to understand the foundational
concepts of:
•
multiples;
•
equivalent fractions;
•
lowest common multiple, and
•
lowest common denominator.
All these ‘subtopics’ can be reviewed via
the inbuilt hyperlinks, ensuring students
can fully understand the lesson on how to
add fractions with different denominators.

The Automated Module
This module performs two major functions:
1) It assesses students in selected topics by starting at their current grade level and then moves
down to lower grades in the same topic until the student shows competency.
2) It automatically generates an intervention tutorial based on the results of the diagnostic
assessment. This tutorial has inbuilt help features to tutor the student through concepts s/he finds
difficult.
Note:
Only a teacher can set an assessment.
Once the assessment is set, the student logs into the assessment module to complete the assessment and the
subsequent tutorial.

‘Beyond Target Level’ box.
STEP 5c
Name your assessment,
select number of questions
per exercise, pass rate, target
level, and if you want to use
the ‘Test Beyond Level ‘box.
Note:
The number of questions is per exercise type. When creating a full assessment EDUSS recommends 3 or 4 questions.
Otherwise the assessment will take months to finish.
The ‘Pass Rate’ for the assessment is pass or fail. EDUSS recommends that when creating an assessment you allow one
question for the student to enter incorrectly but still be able to pass the sub-topic. At 3 questions, this would be 60%.
The ‘Test Beyond Level’ button will allow you to see how far ahead your student’s knowledge is in the different sub-topics.
This button is best to use if you have excelled students.

Notes to person doing this assessment:
The assessment will start off in the ‘Vertical Addition’ grade 4 exercises. As soon as the student passes a set of exercises with
at least a 60% rate, then they will move into the next selected subtopic, in this case ‘Understanding Fractions’.
All the while that the assessment is being worked on a personalized tutorial is being created for that student in the back of
EDUSS. This allows the student to be able to access their individualized tutorial as soon as they have finished their
assessment.
For the purposes of this demo, get each question INCORRECT. Remember there are 3 questions of each type, per the
selection, for this demo.
When you get to the exercise where dominos need to be counted, input the correct answers.
After you do that, the program will switch to begin the assessment on Understanding Fractions.
TO ENTER A NUMBER IN AN ANSWER CELL, FIRSTLY LEFT CLICK IN THE CELL, THEN ENTER THE
NUMBER IN THAT CELL.
Please note:
To move between cells use your ‘Tab’ key on your keyboard or left click with your mouse.
To score your answer use your ‘Enter’ key or the ‘Score’ button.

Progression of assessment for student
Follow the arrows...
The assessment begins here on
‘Vertical Addition’ with Gr 4
material & moves to easier
concepts (lower grade levels) until
the student achieves the selected
pass score.
Note:
At this stage the program
focuses on student’s ability to
regroup in vertical addition.
Note:
Program has determined student doesn’t
know how to regroup & continues with
vert. addition without regrouping.
Finish this part of the assessment
here by giving the correct answers
in this K level exercise.
The assessment on
‘Understanding Fractions’
begins here with Gr 5 work.
Note:
Program has determined student doesn’t
know how to use vert. addition format &
tests student’s counting-on skills.
Note:
When the entire assessment is completed a
window will appear as above. Click on OK to
exit and begin the remediation tutorial.
Finish this part of the assessment here by
giving the correct answers in this Gr 2 level
exercise where you click on half the images.
Notes to person doing this assessment/tutorial:
When the assessment is completed, you can proceed with the custom-designed tutorial by following the flowchart on the next
page.
Note that the tutorial contains functions not available in assessment mode. There are three additional functions in tutorial
mode:
•
Student work is scored and the score is now displayed.
•
Student can view an unlimited number of worked examples of the type s/he is attempting by clicking on the ‘Worked
Example’ button.
•
Student can access the narrated ’Teach Me’ slides that will explain the math behind the exercise type s/he is doing.
8
These ‘Teach Me’ slides will often end with a reinforcement quiz.
How to access the tutorial
After clicking the OK button
from the last slide, click on
‘Show Tutorials’ near the top
left of screen.
Now click on the name of the
tutorial just below the
‘Tutorials’ heading.
Once you click on this ‘Next
Exercise’ button, the tutorial
will begin.
The tutorial begins here on Vertical Addition with K
level material (the lowest level passed in the
tutorial) & moves up grade levels until student
passes at the highest grade level in this topic.
Tutorial continues through
a series of exercises until
student achieves
competency at the highest
grade level in this topic.
Note
The tutorial begins at the lowest level achieved
in the assessment. In the assessment, the
student could not do problems that used the
vertical addition format, but he could do the
counting-on problem with the dominos. The
program recognizes this and begins at the level
the student is competent and gradually takes
him by the hand from what he knows to what he
doesn’t know.
By clicking on the ‘Help’ button, student is
guided through a series of teaching slides
on how to do this type of problem. All
tutorial exercises have help slides
available to help students. Click on red
exit button to go back to tutorial.
.
Tutorial continues through a
series of exercises on
Understanding Fractions until
student achieves competency
at the highest level in this topic.
The tutorial ends here with this Gr 5 level content
if the student has successfully completed all the
remediation exercises.
The tutorial on Understanding Fractions begins
here at the lowest level passed in the tutorial &
moves up grade levels until student passes at the
highest grade level in this topic.
