I would also like to inform the membership that the Thursday night league “A” division has been renamed in honor of Mack Saunders. It will now be named the Mack Division and is a testimony to Mack’s longstanding commitment to Glen Oak Country Club, not only as President and Green Chairman, but also for the strong advisory role he continues to play at the Club. When you see Mack, please congratulate him on this unique honor. Hopefully by now you have all seen the new fireplace that was installed just off the Grill Room as well as the new hanging doors that make it a great venue for an intimate dinner or a small get-together. What a great addition to the clubhouse! Equally as impressive is the painting of the clubhouse which now adorns the fireplace. This painting represents countless hours of tedious work by our own member Lisa Cunningham who has graciously loaned the painting to Glen Oak. Please thank Lisa when you see her for her kind generosity. Jerry Musheno, Glen Oak CC President Glen Oak Country Club Club Manager’s Report… Jeffrey Spagna, CCM Another Memorial Day Cookout and opening day at the pool are already behind us, but as always that wasn't the only acvity at the Club this past weekend. Friday night featured a wedding rehearsal dinner, Saturday was highlighted by not one, but two dinner pares to celebrate special occasions and Sunday evening featured a very special birthday celebraon for one of our club members. Mother Nature provided some unexpected nice weather for a change that enced larger than normal crowds for this me of the year at the pool facility, the golf course was very busy and both paos were filled with happy diners as well. All of this bodes well for another promising summer filled with more club social events than ever before. As in the past, the month of June will offer a plethora of golf events that will offer something different for all of our members who parcipate. A mixed foursome event will get the acvity started on Friday, June 3rd, featuring a 2:00 pm shotgun start along with cocktails, hors doeuvres and dinner at the compleon of the tournament. An early summer "Shootout" will take place the following two days, along with more Oliver Moon play on the 5th. A Ladies NEPWGA Open Day will follow on Tuesday, June 7th, as a prelude to the Summer Championship on Saturday and Sunday, the 11th and 12th. The season's first Member & 1 or 3 Guests Tournament gets underway on Wednesday, June15th, and features special food and beverage service a7erwards, including a cocktail hour with appezers and buffet dinner. The Ladies NEPWGA Team Matches, Oliver Moon Quarterfinals and Parent Child Tournament will highlight the following weekend as a prelude to one of the summer's premier golf and social events. Of course, I'm speaking about the Gwil Maddock Member Member which features not only championship golf, but also one of the most ancipated dinner dances of the year on Saturday evening, June 25th. Back by popular demand will be the "Flaxy Morgan Band", whose debut performance at our inaugural "Libaon Celebraon" le7 those in a<endance asking for more. You asked and we are delivering so plan on coming out to enjoy their fantasc rendions of many of your favorite songs, both old and new. Please note that you DO NOT HAVE TO PARTICIPATE in the golf tournament in order to a<end the party. Seang will be available on both paos as well as in the dining room and there is no ala carte dinner service that evening, so stop by to enjoy an amazing array of food staons, libaons and culinary creaons!!! Please watch your emails and check your monthly newsle<er and calendars for further informaon regarding all club funcons. As I menoned, there will be more events this year than ever before and several of them will be coming your way soon. This month's "Happy Hour" will take place on Friday, June 17th, and will be followed the very next night by our first "Chef's Table Dinner", which will feature a six course gourmet meal and wines paired with each one. This is a first-come, first-served affair with limited reservaons being accepted, so look for a special flyer with further informaon and call right away if you would like to a<end. Another new event, the "Seafood Gala", will take place at the Club pool on Saturday, July 9th, and will be followed by our annual "Steak Fry and Clambake" on Friday, July 22nd, with entertainment by the very popular "Picture Perfect Band". The month of August will be highlighted by the Jackman Memorial Dinner Dance on Saturday, August 6th, with club favorite "Group du Jour" providing the evening's music. As you can see, the area's very best bands will once again be stopping at the Club to entertain you this season. Addional social funcons are sll in the planning stages and we'll update you as to what progress is being made as further informaon becomes available. I can tell you that there will be a new event in every month, each with its very own unique theme, as we strive to offer a social calendar filled with an abundance of acvity, with which no other club can compete. I'm excited about all that we have to offer and trust you will do your very best to a<end as many funcons as possible, or at least as many as your busy schedules will allow. It is your parcipaon and support that make Glen Oak and all of the events we offer so successful and it is appreciated more than you know. Whether it's a relaxing day at the pool, enjoying a challenging round of golf, experiencing the gorgeous views afforded by our two paos with a cocktail or spending an evening of dining and dancing, I'm sure you will want to come back for more. I look forward to seeing you all at the Club soon! The enhanced atmosphere has created a big demand for private parties, ala carte dining and small member events in this area. Above the fireplace you will find an original pastel painting of the clubhouse by member Lisa Cunningham. Lisa has been gracious enough to place the painting on loan to Glen Oak for all to enjoy. The framing was custom made by Carriage Barn Antiques. There have been a number of inquiries about whether prints are available for purchase... You may do so by contacting Bob Sedlak at the Pro Shop at 570-587-4024 or online at http://www.lisacunninghamfineart.com/ Lisa Cunningham putting the finishing touches on her pastel painting of the clubhouse. The long range weather forecast is showing near average temperatures for at least the first half of June. Here is a list of projects being worked on the course currently: Trying to the keep up with the rough cutting. Concentrating on detail work around the golf course. Edging bunkers, flower beds, sprinkler heads, irrigation boxes, yardage markers. Working on several irrigation leaks. Installing brick pavers for ball washers and garbage cans on the course. Soon we will be doing a light topdressing on the greens to help for improve smoothness on the putting surface, hatch dilution, improve turf recovery, increase firmness and improve root zone. Approaches have been aerified this past week and they will heal pretty quickly. A few reminders regarding player responsibilities with regard to course upkeep are therefore in order. Please be mindful of your pitchmarks, the impression a ball struck from a distance makes when it contacts the green. When repairing a pitchmark, make sure you push the surrounding turf toward the center of the pitchmark, and never lift up. Levering the grass upward will level out the turf and fill the hole, but it will separate the plant from the roots and kill it, leaving a circular brown mark. It is my belief that most of the unrepaired pitchmarks are due to people actually forgetting that they’ve made a mark at all. I’ve found that we see mor e unr epair ed mar ks as the gr eens fir m up. If your ball strikes the green and releases significantly, even rolling off the green, you may forget to look for the mark you’ve made. Please check for your mark anytime your approach lands on the green! Please fill fairway and tee divots with the mix provided in the carts or in the divot boxes on par 3s and selected other holes. Please replace any divots you make in the rough to the best of your ability. We have small sand bottles available for walkers! As you all know, we have installed new, permanent artificial mats on the back part of the driving range. With very limited exceptions, these mats will be on use on Monday and Fridays, and also if the tee is very saturated. The mats will ease the pressure on our turf, and will hopefully lead to better turf conditions through the year. Divot management is also vitally important! Please place each ball behind the divot you created with the shot before. If you use this method only ½” to 1” of tur f is affected, as opposed to cr eating an entir ely new divot. It will drastically reduce the area affected by a practice session, and help ensure quality conditions for those who use the space after you.
