Light Cure Adhesive Technology
Light Cure Adhesive Technology Issue 1 Introduction The entire Spectrum of Innovative Solutions Ever since the commercialisation of ultraviolet light curing products over three decades ago, Henkel has remained at the forefront of the development of light curing adhesives, sealants and coatings for industrial applications ranging from glass assemblies to plastic bonding and medical device manufacturing. Adhesives that cure quickly on exposure to light have swept across the industrial spectrum, gaining widespread acceptance because of their compelling process cost reduction benefits and wide range of properties. Originally, light cure adhesives were formulated to be cured with ultraviolet (UV) light sources, followed by UV/visible light curing systems. The latest generation of light cure adhesives offered by Henkel relies solely upon the visible light spectrum to deliver safe, efficient, immediate cure for a broad range of assembly applications. It is ideal for a wide range of applications and exceeds both industry and environmental sustainable standards – ensuring a safer working environment, eliminating venting, reducing unnecessary energy usage, and saving money through less replacement, maintenance, repair, and capital investment costs. The products are designed for use on UV-blocking clear and selected coloured substrates including translucent variations of blue, purple, grey, white and green. ® Loctite Light Cure Adhesive Technologies • Light curing acrylics, offering the most extensive variety of properties of all light cure chemistries. A transparency equal to glass and clear plastics, as well as versatile adhesion characteristics are their most notable properties • Light curing silicones, which cure into soft, flexible thermoset elastomers and are excellent for elastic bonding, sealing and leakproofing • Light curing cyanoacrylates, offering outstanding plastic bonding capabilities combined with rapid cure by low intensity light irradiation • Light curing anaerobics with excellent metal bonding capabilities and outstanding chemical resistance combined with shadow cure ® Loctite Light Cure Solutions with Shadow Cure Dual cure capability, effected by heat or activator, as moisture or anaerobic cure, can also be provided to cure adhesives in shadowed areas. Dual cure expands the benefits of light cure technology to non-transparent substrates, other adhesive technologies and application areas. 4 Table of Content Light Cure Adhesives for Glass 6 Light Cure Adhesives for Plastics 8 Light Cure Adhesives for Non Transparent Substrates 10 Equipment for Light Curing 12 Dispensing Equipment 14 Product Selector Guide 16 5 Light Cure Adhesives for Glass Light cure adhesives offer clear advantages for glass applications and have been the preferred option for many years. • They achieve high transparency and show excellent stability even after long term ageing in hostile environmental conditions including moisture, sunlight and dishwashers • Their refractive index matches that of float glass, creating a virtually invisible bond line • They create high strength bonds on all types of glass including float glass, crystal glass, fibre glass and ceramic glass. They are particularly effective when bonding metal to glass • The product range goes all the way from high strength grades for structural bonds to highly flexible types for stress absorption within the bond line • They greatly improve the ease of assembly and range of design options, eliminating the need for drilling holes, or for mechanical fasteners to avoid stress peaks, and achieve a clean, modern design with perfect cosmetic appearance 6 www.uv.loctite.co.uk Applications • Glassware – bowls, jars, bottles, vases, drinking glasses … • Glass furniture – tables, display cabinets, TV stands, sideboards, worktops … • Art glass – figurines, beads, jewellery … • Optical industry – lenses, mirrors … • Medical industry – syringes, catheters … • General industry – electric lighting, displays … Product Adhesive Technology Viscosity [mPa. s] Colour Fixture Time [s] (@ 6mW/cm² @ 365 nm) Suitable for Glass Plastic Metal Ceramic transparent, light amber 15 b n b n ® Acrylic 4500 ® Acrylic 15000 transparent, amber 10 b ® Acrylic 2500 transparent, amber 6 b ® Acrylic 4000 transparent, amber 15 b Loctite 3051* ® Acrylic 1200 clear 20 b ® Acrylic 100 clear 10 b Loctite 3491* ® Acrylic 1100 clear 12 ® Acrylic 6000 clear ® Acrylic 15000 clear ® Acrylic 5000 transparent, pale yellow ® Silicone paste translucent, colourless ® Silicone 65000 ® Silicone 5000 ® Acrylic paste transparent, light amber Loctite 350 Loctite 352 Loctite 358 Loctite 385 Loctite 3081 Loctite 3494 Loctite 3525 Loctite 3851 Loctite 5083 Loctite 5088 Loctite 5091 Loctite 158587 b b b n b b b b n b b n b b b n 8 b b b n 5 b b b n 12 b >30 b translucent, straw coloured >30 b translucent, slight milky >30 b 15 b *ISO 10993 certified or USP Class VI approved. The versatility of light curable adhesives for use in bonding and tacking, potting and encapsulating, coating and sealing applications is further enhanced by products which have a secondary cure mechanism to ensure residual or complete cure in shadowed areas not reached by UV or visible light. For such joint configurations, light cure adhesives are available with secondary cure capability. This secondary curing options include heat, moisture, activator or as anaerobic cure. Light cure adhesives offer benefits even when non transparent substrates are involved: • • • • 10 Precise positional fixturing of parts to be bonded Fast cure for high processing speeds and in-line quality control capability Reliable cure of exposed excess adhesive fillets or squeeze-out Cure in shadowed areas over time by secondary cure Applications Wherever fast cure of adhesive in fillets accessible by light offers a process benefit, e.g. for • Fast fixturing of magnets, ferrites, ceramic parts … • Fast positioning of parts in retaining joints … • Fillet or surface cure, e.g. of post-applied product outside the bond area … Product ® Acrylic 15000 transparent, amber Fixture Time [s] (@ 6mW/cm² @ 365 nm) 10 ® Anaerobic 7500 transparent, amber 15 ® Acrylic 4000 transparent, amber 15 ® Anaerobic 500 transparent, yellow 12 ® Acrylic 17500 transparent, amber 5 b ® Anaerobic transparent, pale yellow 12 b ® Acrylic translucent, amber 12 Loctite 4304* ® Cyanoacrylate 20 transparent, pale green ® Cyanoacrylate 900 ® Silicone paste ® Silicone 65000 ® Silicone 5000 ® Anaerobic Loctite 352 Loctite 366 Loctite 385 Loctite 661 Loctite 3526 Loctite 3851 Loctite 3920 Loctite 4305* Loctite 5083 Loctite 5088 Loctite 5091 Loctite 128157 Adhesive Technology Viscosity [mPa.s] 5000 10000 15 Colour Suitable for Glass b Plastic Metal Ceramic n b b n b b b b b b b b b b b b n b b 2 b n n transparent, pale green 2 b n n translucent, colourless >30 b n b b translucent, straw coloured >30 b n b b translucent, slightly milky >30 b n pale green >30 *ISO 10993 certified or USP Class VI approved.
