On November 6, 2013, a group of 3 excited Sunbeam Clients headed to the CTV television studio to film a commercial for the annual anti-bullying campaign. Melissa, Lisa and Marcel each received their script and rehearsed ahead of time. Both girls did a wonderful job memorizing their pledge and Marcel was able to communicate using the wonders of technology through his Dynavox device! All three were naturals in front of the camera. Several other agencies servicing differently-abled clients also took part in this event. Thank you to Christine Rushton for co-ordinating this opportunity and to Megan Stillwell and Michelle Fleury who attended with our celebrities. Watch for the commercials to be aired on CTV between December 2013 and May 2014 and also on Kool FM. To view the pledge – or to take it yourself – go to http://kitchener.ctvnews.ca/more/the-pledge . A HOME TO CALL THEIR OWN The 75 residential clients of Sunbeam Centre are spread across Kitchener, Waterloo and St. Jacobs, in 14 group homes. Of these, 2 were previously built homes that were purchased but renovated to suit our needs, and 11 were designed and custom built from the ground up to meet our requirements. Until now, 1 group of clients… the ladies of Rainbow 43…have lived in a rented unit, which Sunbeam assumed management of in September of 1993. At long last, Dr. Lawton’s dream of moving the girls to a home of their own is coming to pass, with the purchase of our newest location; Eagen House! Eagen is a 35 year old bungalow in the Fischer-Hallman and Queen St. area of Kitchener. The home boasts a beautiful and spacious open-concept foyer, living room, dining room, and kitchen; with 3 large bedrooms on the main floor as well as 2 additional bedrooms and a full bathroom in the lower level. As well as moving the 4 clients from Rainbow to this new home, the location, and its 2 bedrooms on the lower level, could provide space for 2 additional admissions. At this time, we have chosen to offer 1 new spot to a client who resides outside of Waterloo Region. The move here will bring her closer to her family and provide greater opportunities for social and personal growth, and the development of life skills. Since October 1st, crews have been busy doing renovations to make the home more accessible for the girls. These included enlarging the bathroom; widening bedroom doorways; re-structuring of the driveway/garage and front entry. A modern ‘modular’ ramp system will replace the old steps into the home to allow for wheelchair access. As well, we have installed a sprinkler system, pull stations, automatic door closers, and other fire-safety features. We are nearing the end of the renovation process and plan to have the girls move in just in time for Christmas this year! Congratulations to the Rainbow girls on their new home! 7 WHAT’S HAPPENING AT DSRC FAMILY RESOURCES 2014 Seasonal Influenza Clinic Schedule Region of Waterloo, Public Health Date Community Time Location Address January 6, 2014 Waterloo 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Public Health—Waterloo Room 508 99 Regina St. S.
