JUST SAY’N
Wow, this came around quick. I think our Humble Scribe is trying to get all of his future issues
done in two months. But, it has been a great ride.
The March event run by Allan and Christi Ellis went off extremely well. The only aspect that he
has to work on is the weather, but for a first effort if there was only one problem, it’s a success.
Jeri, Brandon and I bailed out of a walking tour of the historic district after about 15 minutes and
went out to Oberle Meats and spent an hour stocking up on artery hardening sausage and brats.
This stuff has got to be good because the place was jammed with “locals.” We finally made it to
the winery and we were treated to a great lunch in our own private room. The weather actually
helped during this part of the event, as there was not much of a crowd at the winery.
Jeri and I attended the AGM this past weekend in Boston, actually in Cambridge adjacent to the MIT campus. I will detail the
mundane details in a separate piece. We did learn of two interesting future events. The first came in a conversation with Gary
Vaughn, our South Central board member. He is trying to arrange a get together of members from North Texas, Oklahoma,
Kansas and Missouri in Branson, the weekend before the Memorial Day weekend. It would be completely informal for the purpose of opening up the contact between the clubs. He has arranged a very good rate at one of the hotels and is in the process
of finalizing some plans. Stay tuned.
Secondly the Western States Concours will be in Colorado Springs on September 2nd thru 6th, with the show on the Friday the
6th. Then on Saturday the 7th they will be holding the Pikes Peak Concours d’ Elegance, which is also a sanctioned JCNA
event. This is the closest you will ever be to the Western States AND you can do two sanctioned concours with one swipe of
the dust rag. Both of the concours will be at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort. I don’t know if that has ever happened before.
That’s all folks!
OOP
From the editorial department…
This month’s “Award of Excellence” definitely goes out to Allan & Christi Ellis for hosting the event in March. It takes bravery to sign up for
March. Allan went completely over the top in preparation for it by constructing signs and hosting a really nice buffet style continental breakfast
beforehand. I was all set to take up the rear guard but a phone call to home base indicated that my presence
was needed there. So, I’m sorry I missed Chaumette. It’s one of our favorite wineries. Allan even sent me one
of the best “after event write-ups” I’ve seen since taking the job as editor. Anyone who adds in quotes from Oscar Wilde is bringing the quality of this newsletter up to a whole ‘nother level.
I’m in the throes of having a new garage built which is both fun and stressful. Many ask me what is my next project. Right now, it’s this dang garage. It’s going to be great when it’s finished.
I did have a stray car follow me home though recently. The newest project on four wheels is a 1966 Ford F-250
pickup. It needs everything but it does run and drive which puts it among the better examples that I’ve brought
home over the years. It’s not a Jaguar so I’ve made up for that by printing a “barn find” XK120 from the Hemmings Motor News blog in this issue of the newsletter.
President Bob has the real important news this month so I’ll just step back behind the curtain and get on with
being a humble scribe.
Thanks for reading. Humble

JAGSL Jaunt to Ste. Genevieve and Chaumette Vineyards and Winery
“Whenever people talk to me about the weather, I always feel quite certain that they mean something else. And that makes
me quite nervous.” (Oscar Wilde)
Our end of March daytrip to Ste. Genevieve County was well attended and well enjoyed. Well, it was well attended for a
March event. March, by the way, was not cooperating, at least not fully. The well worn phrase, “In like a lion, out like a
lamb,” was, well, well worn. But two out of three wasn’t bad: it didn’t rain and it didn’t snow.
The day started at the Holiday Inn route 66 (the old Viking Inn) on Watson at 8:30 with a continental breakfast. We were going to need the carbs! The winds were blustery and the sun was absent. It was interesting to hear Phil Taxman and Bob
Herold trade safari stories from far flung corners of the world. It was also interesting to hear John Testrake’s recommendation of a safari farm in Tuskegee, Alabama. At least, I think that’s what he said…it might make a good future trip.
After a short review of the day’s events, we proceeded to the cars. On the way out the door, I asked John to bring up the
rear. I was under the assumption that we would caravan but with directions in hand everyone had left to run the rust out, no
doubt. Kelly Waite and I then formed a caravan of two (seeing that John had to head home for a gala event at “The Farm”).
Eventually, we made a caravan of three when we caught up to Courtney Jones and Tatyana in his 1984 Mercedes 230CE
just before we exited I-55. At around 10:45, we pulled into the parking lot on South Main Street. I walked down to the Visitor’s Center and the assembled group was viewing the eight minute video introduction to Ste. Genevieve. It seemed like
everyone was having a good time doing a little bit of this and that and a whole lot of nothing. I caught a glimpse of Tom
Loew and Charlotte, hand in hand, rounding a corner rather briskly walking to the next shop. I also observed a group leaving
a local coffee shop where it looked like Les Rich and Phil Taxman were holding court.
Somehow we all made it to Chaumette around 12:30 or so. (Well, not all of us…Kelly had to return to work.) Marsh Riegert
and Cathy Vogt were behind our ’67 420 on the way. I felt it was an opportunity for some spirited driving; Marsh yawned and
set the speed control on his Cadillac XLR.
Chaumette was quite enjoyable. Keith King, the resident tall guy and events director at Chaumette, had initially wanted to
seat us outdoors. But the aforementioned weather wasn’t cooperating again. After a leisurely encounter with their recommended wines at the bar, they placed us in a private setting.
Before lunch was served, the drawing for the grand prize took place. The winner of the framed Mille Miglia canvas was Bob
and Geri Herold’s grandson. We had a runner-up prize of a trunk organizer that went to (?). And Meguiar sent enough tire
gel to keep the rubber bright for months to come.
The lunch exceeded expectations with an assortment of sandwiches, salad and homemade potato chips. The volcanic
brownie dessert with mousse topping was delightful. People mingled awhile over coffee and then headed out the door to the
rest of the day. Christi and I want to thank everyone who came and also those who were so kind to tell us that they couldn’t
make it: Gary and Diana Schlueter had a date at the Fox and Jim and Lisa Hendrix were off to a wedding in Dallas. We’ll
see you at the dam in May!

May in JAGSL
Saturday May 10 - JAGSL Tour of the Melvin Price Lock & Dam
Join us on Saturday, May 10th for a tour of Lock & Dam 26, or the Melvin Price Lock & Dam, located on the Mississippi
river just below Alton Illinois. This huge structure was opened in 1990 to replace the original lock dam from the 1930’s.
We will have a personalized tour just for JAGSL and you will have the opportunity to walk across the top of the structure,
80 ft above the water and learn about this important part of the Mississippi and its commerce and the views are fantastic.
Although we can’t guarantee it, we’ll almost certainly get to see one of the huge tows that move up and down the river,
pass through the lock. Also, the Great Rivers Museum is located at this site. The US Army Corps of Engineers operates
this facility and our tour will be led by a knowledgeable Park Ranger and there is no cost.
We will meet in the parking lot of Creve Cour Plaza, located on the Southeast corner of Ballas and Olive (just a tenth of a
mile west of the new Jaguar dealership and on the same side of the street) and there is a “5 Guys Burgers and Frys” at
the corner for a landmark. We need to leave for the site at 9:45 am and our tour will begin at 11:00am sharp, lasting
about an hour. There is plenty of parking available and when we have finished we’ll travel a little over 5 miles to Castelli’s
Restauant in Alton. Castelli’s has sandwiches, salads, lunch specials or full meals at moderate prices and is located near
Hyw 255 for an easy return home.
We will need a headcount for both the Lock & Dam as well as the restaurant,
so please e-mail Tom at big.cat92@ hotmail .com.
We hope to see you there!
Judges Training in May
Annual Judges Training Seminar
Saturday May 17, 1:00pm
Hosted by Plaza Jaguar
Chief Judge Jim Hendrix
Co-chief Judge John Testrake
JCNA Concours d’Elegance judging is a skill that
needs to be honed a bit each year. We will have a
Judges Training meeting at Plaza Jaguar on May
17th.
Plaza is at 11645 Olive Blvd., in Creve Coeur in
case you didn't know.
The event will begin at 1:00 with lunch and should
be over by 4:00
The afternoon schedule prevents a schedule conflict with the May Cars & Coffee event in Rock Hill
that morning.
Please plan to attend. Our concours needs experienced and trained judges and that means you.
Sometimes “barn find” really is the most appropriate description of an automobile. Though the exact
ownership history of this particular 1954 Jaguar XK120 SE convertible isn’t clear, this much is: Sometime in the 1970s, the droptop Jaguar was parked in a Georgia barn, where it rested undisturbed for decades. Next month, the patina- and dust-laden sports
car will cross the block, once again raising the question of whether the car’s condition will enhance or detract from its value.
Photos courtesy Auctions America.
According to Auctions America’s description of the Jaguar, the Georgia barn-find XK120 SE reportedly had 60,000 miles on the
odometer when put away, and has since been “gone through” mechanically but (obviously) not cosmetically. Its Jaguar Red finish may be a respray in the original color, and matching rear fender spats (standard equipment on cars fitted with steel wheels)
are included. Inside, this particular XK120 SE features a burl walnut dashboard, dark brown upholstery and roll-up windows, but
quite a bit of work will be required before the car is in drivable condition. Auctions America has not released the Jaguar’s chassis
number.

2014 JCNA Annual General Meeting
The AGM was held this past weekend, April 4th and 5th, hosted by JANE (Jaguar Club of New England), in Boston. It was a fairly quite meeting for reasons I will discuss later. The important items,
in the mind of the Board of Directors, are as follows:
Corporate Policy

A new committee, Concours Committee, was formed to manage the Concours program.
This work was formally done by the Rules Committee. The CC will be initially chaired by Pat
Harmon, a former JAGSL member. An amendment to install term limits on the members
failed. The other two events, Slalom and Rally already have oversight committees
New Business

Bylaw Change. Failure to pay dues does not automatically dissolve a club. If a club
wants to dissolve itself it must follow steps that include polling of the individual members
by JCNA.

A new club was approved. Capital Region Jaguar Club of New York. It will be centered,
obviously, in the Albany area.

The meat of the meeting was eliminated. NB-3, which included breaking NA 1st place
ties, Golden Growler Award, combination of Concours classes, and the mandating of ALL
judges being certified in both Concours and Driven, were tabled pending review by the
newly formed Concours Committee.

The Rally and Slalom Committees both received new Chairmen.

The Western States Concours will be in Colorado Springs, September 2nd-6th.

The 2015 AGM will be in Philadelphia.

There was no announcement of a site for the 2015 Challenge Championship.
Committee Reports

The financial report indicated Income of $317,244, Expenses of $286,112, yielding Profit
of $31,132. Assets were $303,477 and Liabilities were $11,494.

The budget report projected Income of $326,360, Expenses of $293,462, and Profit of
$32,898.

The roster count is 4854, which was a gain of 212 members.

The Nominating Committee reported Dick Maury and George Camp as candidates for
President and Vice President respectively. There were no nominations from the floor, so
Dick Maury was elected for his 5th term and George Camp for his 3rd.
Weather

Awful
If you have the desire you can go on the JCNA website to get further details.

2014 CARS AND COFFEE
SPRING START-UP Saturday Morning, APRIL 19
Saturday: 8:30 am – 10:30 AM
Starbucks, 9616 Manchester, Rock Hill Plaza
Many of us have busy Saturdays….the family, house and errands. BUT then, there ARE our cars…and the need to get out,
spend some time with others over just coffee and chat.
CARS & COFFEE is just that. Everyone gathering early Saturdays, at a central location and just enjoy cars.… a good reason
to get out, have coffee and drive when traffic is light.
WHERE: STARBUCKS – 9616 Manchester – 2 Blocks WEST of the McKnight & Rock Hill Rd. intersection. The Rock Hill Plaza is about 2 miles south of 40/64. Plenty of great parking.]
It starts early, and ends early so everyone back home is happy that you are not “killing” the whole day. Stay for the whole
time, or leave when you must. Some groups are using it to start a club “tech day” or road trip.
BUT THE IMPORTANT THING IS: our cars are out…we are driving and seeing & talking cars for a few civilized moments of
the week with others of like mind. Your neighbors would not understand.
CARS: open to all sporting makes & marques, ALL eras and it’s not a show or a concours. Old and new sit side by side
gladly. It’s just that: Cars & Coffee.
FUTURE DATES: May 17, June 21, July 19, Aug.16, Sept.20, & Oct. 18
[All will be Saturdays, 8:30-“10:30ish” am]
