MOUNTAINSIDE RESCUE SQUAD OPEN HOUSE CELEBRATION
The Mountainside Rescue Squad held their
annual EMS Week Open House event on May
21st. The open house allows community members
to meet the men and women who volunteer their
time to serve Mountainside residents and the
surrounding towns. This year the open house
event celebrated two of their member’s scholarly
achievement. Eric Pastore and Lucy Fromtling
both graduated college this year.
Eric Pastore, who is also Chief of the
Mountainside Rescue Squad, graduated from
Rutgers University in Newark, earning his
Bachelor’s degree in psychology. Pastore is not
only Chief at the Mountainside Rescue Squad, but
is also a paid EMT at other organizations. At the
moment he expressed “I am undecided on what I
want to do in the future,” but he plans to continue
to volunteer his time with the Rescue Squad.
Lucy Fromtling recently graduated from
Rutger’s Biomedical and Health Sciences with a
Master’s of Science Physicians Assistance
Studies. Fromtling has been an EMT for 6 years
and has used the valuable experience she gained
with the Rescue Squad as a stepping stone to her
ultimate goal, Physician’s assistant. Fromtling
said, “I love the squad” and while she was
attending Rutgers University she still volunteered
her time, even though they warned her that course
load would take up most of her time.
Mountainside Rescue Squad is made up
entirely of volunteers and is funded only by

donations and grants. Volunteers like Marty Roden, Senior EMT, who
enjoys the work the squad does. He expressed “you see people on their
worse days and it feels good to help them out.” He admits that “it can be
a stressful job,” but he finds solace that he is working with members that
are like family.
If you would like more information about the Squad please visit
www.ems22.com, or call the non-emergency telephone: 908-233-6338.
Tax deductible donations can be mailed to: Mountainside Rescue Squad,

DAYS OF REALIZATION
The students of Governor Livingston High
School recently participated in the “Days of
Realization” program. Every 15 minutes,
someone in the United States dies as the result of
an alcohol related traffic collision. Due to this
startling fact, several TREND students at GLHS
organized this two-day program.
On the first day, students were taken from their
classrooms and an announcement was made over
the loudspeaker announcing their death. Their
faces were painted white and they were returned
to class; however, they were not allowed to speak
for the remainder of the day. After school, the 26
students and three staff members who suffered
this fate were taken to an undisclosed location for
the night. Here, they participated in activities and
heard from a guest speaker, who tragically killed
her friend as a result of an alcohol-related
accident.
During their time away, students and staff
members were asked to write letters to their loved
ones, saying what they would not have gotten to
say if this were in fact a real situation. The next
day, in an assembly program for the junior and
senior students, specific members of this group

shared their letters with the student body. In
addition, Maria Esteves of the Union County
Prosecutor's Office shared the heartbreaking
story of losing her 9-year old daughter due to the
actions of a drunk driver.
The program was a simulation of the impact
that traffic fatalities have on a community of
people. We hope that this program will help
students realize the true risks of reckless
behavior and understand the dangers of driving
under the influence.
This program was driven by GLHS students
with assistance and guidance provided by Mr.
Robert Segear, Berkeley Heights Student
Assistance Counselor. Also assisting and
providing leadership were School Resource
Officers, Officer Edward Gaffney of the
Berkeley Heights Police Department and
Detective Shaun Bendik of the Mountainside
Police Department. The program was completely
supported through numerous donations by the
generous people and businesses of Berkeley
Heights and Mountainside, as well as by the
Berkeley Heights and Mountainside Municipal
Alliances.

SELECT CHOIR PERFORMS AT CITIFIELD
On Friday, April 29th, the Deerfield Select
Chorus, from the Mountainside School District,
performed the National Anthem at a NY Mets
game under the direction of Deerfield music
teacher, Jared Rosenblum. This is the third year
that the chorus has performed at CitiField. The
staff from the Mets commented that they were
“blown away” by the sound of the chorus and
couldn't believe that such young students could
produce such a beautiful sound. The crowd at the
game cheered loudly when the anthem was over.
The students were very excited about
performing at the game. It is such a unique
opportunity to sing in front of thousands of
screaming fans. This is only one of the many
performance opportunities that the Deerfield
Select Choir provides the students. A few of the
members of the select choir also performed for
the General Assembly at the United Nations
earlier this year. This was a once in a lifetime
opportunity. The children sang an original song
that was written for them called, We All See The
Stars. Other performance venues included
Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music
Hall
Students in grades 5-8 are eligible to audition
for Select Choir. To audition, students sing 30
measures of a song of their choice, and are tested
on their ability to match pitch.
Many of the students in Select Choir are in 5th
grade and look forward to continuing in the
program as well as the school musical. Many of
the 8th grade students would like to continuing
performing in high school and would like to go
on to a professional career in music and acting.

County Teen Arts Festival program. The artwork
was created by Stephanie Fish of Morristown
(senior), Therese Ruane of Mountainside
(sophomore), and Silvana Truppi of Annandale
(junior). "Several students submitted artwork for
the anthology," said Ms. Dillinger. "I appreciate
that they all have passion for what they do and
were willing to create work outside of class, in
their spare time. Silvana's, Therese's and
Stephanie's drawings appealed to the editors of
the Anthology. It is a lovely, bound book and I
am proud to see their art within it!" Pictured

THERESE RUANE OF MOUNTAINSIDE HAS HER SIGHTS SET ON ANIMATION
It wasn’t until high school that Therese Ruane
started to realize that the passion she had for
animation was more than just a childhood hobby.
Most recently, Therese’s artwork has been
published in the 2016 Creative Writing
Anthology, which is part of the Somerset County
Teen Arts Festival, and her mixed media piece,
“Allure,” captured a gold medal at the Somerset
County Teen Arts Exhibition on May 11th. Her
artwork will be displayed at the county’s gallery
in Somerville this summer.
A sophomore at Mount Saint Mary Academy
(MSMA) in Watchung, Therese said, “Since I
was a little kid, I copied my favorite cartoons like
Pokémon and Ed Edd n Eddy. When I was good
enough to draw them freehand, I started to realize
that I wanted to become a cartoonist.”
Research, practice, video games, and learning
from her peers who were also talented in art
helped fuel Therese’s interest in animation.
MSMA art department chairperson Donna M.
Abrams and art teacher Duffy Dillinger also
provided inspiration for the Mountainside
resident.
“My father bought me my first Wacom tablet
when I was in the eighth grade which was the
first time I was able to digitally draw,” she
explained.
“My parents, who are totally supportive,
always asked me (when I told them that I wanted
to be an artist), ‘What can we do to help you
accomplish that dream?’” shared Therese.
After watching the Cartoon Network,
Nicktoons, and Disney channels, Therese began
to develop her own style of animation which she
describes as both realistic and cartoony. She
broadened her horizons and created outside of her
comfort zone when she learned Photoshop skills
that went beyond simply adjusting photographs.
This year, she also came to appreciate drawing
and mixed media, sketching faces and anatomy.
“I’m being taught to take what you see around
me and to create what I want; to put my own style
into it,” said Therese.
“I found Therese to be skillful and creative as
a Graphic Art I student,” said Mrs. Abrams. “Her
motivation led her to co-found and develop mini
projects for this year’s Graphic Art Club.”
It isn’t uncommon to find Therese and her
brother, Matthew, a student at The Academy for
Information Technology in Scotch Plains,
collaborating excitedly every day on the cartoon
they hope to pitch to the Cartoon Network. Their
sister, Mary, a junior at MSMA, always offers
constructive advice to the duo as they create their
masterpieces.
“We are always developing characters and
writing scripts. We have about 30 characters so
far,” she said.
When she graduates from MSMA, Therese
hopes to attend one of the top design schools such
as the California Institute of the Arts, the School
of Visual Arts in New York City, or Savannah
College of Art and Design.
Therese is the daughter of Mr. Kevin Ruane
and Mrs. Lisa Ruane.
