Crème Foundation
Crème Foundations are easy to mix and blend, go on
smoothly, and look natural under stage lighting.
Certain lines of Ben Nye's crème foundations are
tinted more appropriately for stage rather than film
and video, while other lines are appropriate for all
three.
Matte Foundation
Ben Nye's Matte Foundations provide a versatile
blend of high pigmentation and natural coloring in a
fine, textured creme. Apply with a sponge and
dampen for a lighter finish.
Pancake Foundation
Cake Foundations apply quickly and work well for
body makeup applications. They also make a great
base coat for white face or other "character"
foundations. Apply with sponge and water.
Highlight and Shadow
After foundation is applied, Highlight and Shadow are
used to "rebuild" facial features which are washed out
by lighting and distance. Highlight and Shadow are
also used to change the appearance of the facial
structure and to create the desired illusion for a
particular character.
Mascara & Bright Mascara
Ben Nye's creamy, smudgeresistant Mascaras
intensify focus on the eyes. Bright Mascaras add an
edgy aspect to the eyes. White is ideal to age facial
hair and lashes, while Clear "sets" and styles without
adding color.
Concealer Wheel
Ben Nye' Total ConcealerAll Wheel is a 6color
neutralizer wheel that provides concentrated coverage
with more opacity and pigment than the simpler 4color
CoverAll Wheel. Apply beneath foundation with a flat
or dome brush, blend, then powder lightly before
applying foundation. For intense discoloration,
carefully apply additional layers.
Rouge
Rouge is available in both creme and dry cake form.
Either kind may be used separately, or the Creme Rouge
may be applied first and set with the Dry Rouge. Apply
Creme Rouge with fingertips. Apply Dry Cake Rouge
with a soft, full brush.
Contouring Rouge
Subtle Rouge shades softly contour facial bone
structure. Ideal for contouring beneath chin,
cheekbones, and temples.
Neutralizing Crayon
Creme Neutralizing Crayon can quickly cover flaws
and accentuate features. Blends easily with matte or
creme Foundations.
Dry Pressed Eye Shadow
Light, shiny colors which "read" well at a distance may
be used on the eyelids. Shadows may be applied with
fingers, brush, or foamtipped applicator.
Eyebrow Pencils
Formulated in a firm texture, Eyebrow Pencils hold a
precise point to create "wisps" of color to naturally
augment brows.

lipstick to accentuate the lips and shape and heighten
their contrast with the general face makeup.

Sparklers, Body Glitter, and Cake Eye Liner. LiquiSet

Blood and Scabs
Ben Nye Stage Blood is digestible and peppermint
flavored for use in the mouth. Normally removes
completely from costumes. Fill Gelatin Capsules with
blood for release during action.
Liquid Latex
Liquid Latex rubber is primarily used to make
prosthetic pieces. May also be used to "back up" crepe
beards or repeated wearing or to create facial wrinkles
directly on the skin. Light fleshtone dries nearly clear.
To remove, peel from skin, and then wash with soap
and water.
Clear Latex is great for special effects such as burns
and blisters, or as an adhesive for crepe wool hair.
Dries to a clear, flexible finish. Thins with distilled
water.
Ben Nye Thick Blood and Fresh Scab are thicker
versions of the blood products. Use for deep cuts or
where healingclotted blood effects are needed.
Kryolan Blood Powder is a twostep procedure for
external special blood effects (i.e. blood appears as a
knife seems to cut victim). Apply a flesh pink powder
over makeup. When the clear liquid is applied, blood
appears instantly. Nontoxic formulation. Instructions
included.
Wrinkle Stipple, a light formula latex rubber, is used
to create facial wrinkles. Its light fleshtone color
blends natural with Caucasian face. Seal with Castor
Sealer. The bottle comes with a brush.
Caution: Latex contains ammonia; keep away from
the eyes, all facial hair and eyelashes. It will not
release from hair without cutting.
PNTA Tip
Try using small balloons, condoms, heatsealed
sandwich bags, or zipperlock plastic bags to hold
the blood. A ring rigged with milliner's wire can
puncture the blood sac as a hand is clutched to a
wound.
Rehearse with waterfilled sacs to save wear on
costumes. Test blood on scraps of actual costume
materials used to ensure complete washability.
Glycerin
For tears, ooze, perspiration, and other effects.

Casting Supplies
Thermoplastics
Thermoplastics are used to form props, scenic
elements, and costume pieces. All are nontoxic,
workable when heated to 160° F (in hot water or with
a heat fun or hair dryer), and moldable over any
surface. They can even be reheated and reformed.
VaraForm is an openweave cotton fabric coated
with a high density thermoplastic resin. Once softened,
it may be folded, tucked, stretched, and molded to
form any desired shape. Sets in 2 5 minutes,
depending on the number of layers used. Can be
reheated with a hair dryer or repairs and remodeling.
The solid sheets have a great, smooth surface and
stretch a lot when warm, making them quite
economical. The perforated sheets are more flexible
and stretch more easily. Pellets, made of the same
material as the solid sheets, are for molding and
freeform sculpting and they adhere to other
thermoplastics for texturing and relief.
Magicast Alginate
Alginate molding compounds were originally
formulated for making dental impressions, because
they provide extreme accuracy in a flexible, fast
setting medium. Makeup artists quickly recognized the
advantages of these molding compounds for casting
the face and other parts of the human body. Mix with
water to make molds of noses, ears, hands, etc.
Apoxie Sculpt
Apoxie Sculpt by AVES is an incredibly durable, yet
easytowork with 2part sculpting clay. It cures rock
hard overnight without baking, sticks to almost any
clean surface, takes paint well, has 0% shrinkage, and
is certified nontoxic. Working time is approximately 1
hour. Great for sculptural and prop projects of any size,
from model pieces to full size trees.
Cold Latex Foam System
2Part Cold Foam Latex System is used for making
foam masks and prosthetic pieces in plaster molds.
Releasing agent is coated on the mold, and the two
components are mixed, then poured into the mold. Sets
at room temperature. One kit produces 6 quarts of wet
foam. Kit includes Part A, Part B, a releasing agent,
formulas for partial batches, and directions. No oven
curing required. Waterbased, nontoxic formula.
Some projects require extra mold release for multiple
castings.
Hot Foam Latex System
4Part Hot Foam System provides greater accuracy of
detail than possible with cold foam. The process
requires a gram scale, a kitchen mixer, an oven for
curing the foamed latex, and careful attention to detail.
One kit produces about 4 6 quarts of foamed latex,
enough for 5 fullface masks. The kit includes foam
latex base, releasing agent, foaming agent, curing
agent, gelling agent, formulas, and complete
directions.
12
Aqua Resin
AQUARESIN is an easy to use, opaque, nontoxic
composite fabricating resin. This waterbased material
can be used in casting and molding and is primarily
used with fiberglass reinforcement. Permanent in all
interior as well as most exterior applications, it has
numerous uses in such diverse fields as scenic design,
architecture, sculpture, and prototype and product
development. Instructions available online at

Paint
Why Use Scenic Paint?
Drama teachers and theater artists sometimes ask if they can "get by" using paint from their local hardware store
rather than paint created specifically for scenic use. Household latex paint can be used, but paint formulated for the
stage works better because:
• Scenic paint uses pure, vibrant pigments without chalky fillers, so you can mix paints without getting muddy
looking colors.
• Scenic paints have enough binder (glue) to allow for considering thinning, making them economical and versatile.
• Scenic paints dry to a very matte finish which contributes to the illusion of depth and richness of color when lit.
• Scenic paints are durable and made to withstand the physical wear and wide fluctuations of temperature and
humidity encountered during scenery's construction, setup, performance, and storage. (House paints are designed
for hard, static surfaces in a very stable surrounding).
Iddings Deep Color
This caseintype paint by Rosco comes as a
concentrated paste which must be diluted at least 1:1
with water; thus, one gallon of Iddings yields two or
more gallons of usable paint. One gallon, mixed with
water, should cover 500 700 square feet.
Because of its protein base, Iddings paint is subject to
bacterial attack once it is opened. Adding Lysol to
paint may counteract deterioration when it is being
stored for more than a few days. All Rosco paints are
leadfree. Iddings colors come in gallons or quarts. The
test kit includes a oneounce sample of each color,
instructions, and a swatch chart.
Off Broadway
This vinyl acrylic paint by Rosco includes 23 vibrant,
intermixable colors at costs comparable to standard
house paint. It can be used right of the can without
dilution; it also thins well. Depending on the surface,
one gallon will cover 250 350 square feet. It's
flexible, has deep colors, and has been used for many
years by scenic artists. Whitewhite is used to "white
out" other colors. All Rosco paints adhere to almost
any surface. Off Broadway colors are available in
gallon and quart sizes.
Off Broadway Metallic
Waterbased metallic paints with bronzing powders
already added.
Supersaturated Paint
This paint system is formulated to dilute with
substantial quantities of water without losing binder
strength. Best worked as water color, the paint is
thinned from 3:1 to 20:1 and layered on the primed
surface from light to dark. This creates a sense of
translucent depth, particularly good for painting skies.
One gallon of paint and water mixture covers about
250350 square feet. Thinned 20:1, one quart of paint
can cover as much as 1750 square feet with a
translucent wash.
Because of the flexible acrylic base, Supersaturated
works well for roll drops or other soft goods. It will
adhere to nonporous surfaces such as plastic and
metal. Available in quart sizes; gallon sizes available in
White, Velour Black, and Natural Base; 5gallon sizes
are available in White and Black.
Artist's Choice Saturated
Paint
These nontoxic, waterbased paints by Sculptural Arts
Coatings dry to a brilliant matte finish. Color pigment
saturation produces deep, pure, vibrant hues even on
hardtopaint surfaces such as Textilene and rear
projection screens. For opaque results, mix 1 part paint
with 12 parts water. For translucent results, mix 1 part
paint with 5 15 parts water. Pints available by special
order.

Paint / Primer / Sealers
Glow Paint
Phosphorescent Paint is used to mark hazardous areas,
props, furniture placement, etc., for access in total
darkness. Highly visible yellowgreen color. Charged
with daylight, fluorescent, incandescent, or UV light, it
then glows in the dark. Cleans up with soap and water.
Video Paints
Specially formulated for the sensitive keying and
contrast requirements for Ultimatte and Chroma Key
systems, these acrylic paints are used undiluted right
out of the can. They adhere to any porous surface
(wood, muslin, walls) and some nonporous surfaces.
For most applications, onecoat coverage is sufficient.
Rich, saturated colors dry to a matte, nonreflective
finish.
Wildfire Luminescents
Use Wildfire Luminesescent paints to create visible
and invisible fluorescent black light effects in your
productions. Visible fluorescent images appear a
bright color under normal light, and fluoresce
brilliantly under black light. Invisible images appear
nondescript under normal light, and appear only when
black light is applied.
14
Tough Prime
Rosco's waterbased primer bonds to hardtoprime
scenic materials, including PVC pipe, aluminum,
foams, and plastics, as well as muslin, wood, and foam
core. This quick drying, acrylicemulsion primer dries
to a tough, durable coating which can be painted over
with any paint. Excellent for both interior and exterior
use. Available in black or white; 1gallon or 5gallon
buckets.
Plastic Varnish
Plastic Varnish is a waterbased, nontoxic sealer.
Available in Gloss or Flat finish, it dries clear and
is compatible with all waterbased dyes, paints,
dry pigments, and universal tints. Use it full
strength for extra toughness, or thin it with water
for a broader coverage or for spraying through air,
airless, or Hudsontype sprayers. Spray it or dip it
for a glaze or protective finish. Roll or brush it to
seal and preserve all types of surfaces, whether
painted, plastered, or textured. Water resistant
when dry; suitable for exterior use.
Rosco Clear Acrylic
When diluted with water, Clear Acrylic may be applied
as an overcoat to seal a painted surface, used as a
binder for dry pigments, or mixed with other paints for
additional binder strength. It is compatible with most
waterextendable paints. One gallon, diluted, covers
600 800 square feet. Exterior uses acceptable; delays
fading.

Coatings
Foamcoat
Foamcoat is a nontoxic, waterbased coating for
Styrofoam and polystyrene foam. It can also be used to
seal primed wood, concrete block, primed fiberglass,
papier mache, muslin, and many other surfaces.
Applied by brush or roller, it provides a hard, durable
finish that resists chipping and cracking, yet can be
sanded smooth or carved to add detailing. Foamcoat is
inherently flameretardant and waterresistant. Dries to
an offwhite matte finish; cleans up with soap and
water. One gallon covers approximately 150 square
feet.
Sculpt or Coat
If you build scenery, props, or costumes, and you
aren't using Sculpt or Coat, you are missing out!
Sculpt or Coat is a nontoxic plastic cream used to seal
porous materials like fabric or foam, or to mold cloth
over a form into a rigid shape. This versatile material
clean up with soap and water. Its high safety ratings
makes it safe enough for children to use. Applications
include scenery, props, costumes, crafts, special
effects, puppet making, scenic painting, and sculpture.
Flexcoat
Flexcoat is a waterbased coating for polyurethane
foam, Styrofoam, and ethafoam. Useful on foam
scenery and props which must endure rough handling.
It's compatible with all Rosco paints, is weatherproof,
and provides a Class "A" fire rating over most
substrates.
Flexbond
False Proscenium Frame was created with integrated steel covered with
carved foam panels sealed with Sculpt or Coat for "Harrah's" Casino in
Rosco Flexbond is a flexible adhesive bond for scenic
materials such as fabrics, plastics, foams, and wood. It
dries to a clear, hard, flexible coating that isn't tacky
like many other flexible glues. Flexbond is water
based so it can be thinned with water and tinted with
waterbased paints and dyes. Sets in 30  45 minutes;
hardens in 1 2 hours.
Crystal Gel
Crystal Gel is a nontoxic, waterbased material
which provides a clear, plasticlike coating on
virtually any surface used in modern stagecraft. It
air dries quickly usually within hours to a
flexible, translucent surface. When dry, it can be
painted with any Rosco scenic paint, carved, or
safely rolled without cracking, peeling, or
sticking. Such products as sand, sawdust, or
powdered clay can be added to create unique
textures.

sponge, brush, trowel, or smooth with your hands.
Used full strength, it gives a tough, translucent finish;
when thinned with water, it provides a clear, flexible
coating. You can sand and paint it with latex or enamel
paints when dry. Use Sculpt or Coat to prep unfriendly
surfaces; it sticks to practically anything.
Tint Sculpt or Coat with Artist Choice Saturated
Paints, dyes, and pigments. Once dry, surfaces can be
spraypainted, lacquered, or painted with enamels.
When wet, Sculpt or Coat isn't flammable. When dry
and used with some foams, thinned, or mixed with
other compounds, it may be flammable. use suitable
flame retardant if needed.
Apply a thin coat of Sculpt or Coat to seal carved
styrofoam and give it a smooth, paintable surface.
Coating styrofoam with cheesecloth dipped in Sculpt
or Coat will give added durability to pieces which
must tour or endure extra abuse.
May "cloud" if water puddles on the finish product.

Paint Accessories
Liquid Flame Retardant
Rosco Flamex offers a full range of flame retardants for
scenery. The clear liquids are best applied by
immersion, brushing, or spraying.
NF Natural Fiber
PC Paper/Cardboard
PA Paint Additive
SF Synthetic Fiber
RW Raw Wood
DF Delicate Fabric
When you can't treat the substrate directly, apply a
flameretardant coating with PA Paint Additive it will
not alter the color, even on clear acrylic. Flameproof
and paint in one easy step.
FlameShield Aerosol
Argo Starch
Argo Gloss Laundry Starch is ideal for priming
translucent drops, as it does not opaque the fabric the
way paint will. Dissolve one pound of starch in one
gallon of cold water, then slowly pour the starch into
three gallons of boiling water, stirring constantly. Let it
cool, and then strain it into a paint sprayer. One person
sprays ahead while a second person follows, scumble
brushing the starch solution into the cloth. This might
be the most economical way to prime.
Bogus Paper
Place Bogus Paper rough side up under backdrops and
scrims to absorb excess water from starch and paint,
allowing the drop to dry evenly and wrinklefree. 58"
wide, 450 feet long, and 68 pounds shipping weight.
This fireretardant can be applied to beds, carpeting,
upholstery, drapes, pillows, decorative pillows, sheet
rock, unfinished wood, wall paper, natural Christmas
trees, cushions, and most absorbent materials. Easily
sprays on and dries completely clear. FlameShield
does not change the characteristics of the treated
surface. Materials feel and look the same as before the
treatment, without stiffness or residue. A 12 oz. can
treats one 7' Christmas tree.
Powdered Flame Retardant
FF2 Powdered Flame Retardant is designed for use on
cotton, linen, and rayon. Add packet to one gallon of
warm water and stir until completely dissolved. Apply
to fabric until very damp but not dripping. One gallon
treats 150 200 square feet. An economical alternative
to liquid flame retardant.

Paint Tools
Stipple Brush
The original use was to stipple a surface after painting
to make it uniform. Now, it is used as a primer. It is an
excellent tool for starching backdrops.
Fitch Brushes
Americanmade, Rosco Iddings brushes feature long
and natural bristles, seamless nickel ferrules, and long
handles. Excellent for both classroom and professional
use. Bristle length ranges from 11/2" to 31/2"
depending on brush width.
Lay In Brushes
Bestt Liebco's "Dixie" Lay In brushes, black China
bristle with nickeled steel ferrule. Handle unscrews to
accomodate 5' Dixie Pole for painting on the floor.
Brush widths of 6" and 7" make short work for even
the largest project.
Sponges
Natural Sponges are a favorite of scene painters and
faux finishers alike. Dab for texture or rub for
blending; these sponges are also perfect for stenciling.
"Sea wool" sponges have one cut (flat) side, while
"wool form" sponges have no flat surface.
Graining Tools
Wood Graining Tool are designed to recreate the effect
of graining. The Rocker Wood Graining Tool has three
surfaces and a handle. The face of the tool is for heart
graining effects, the notched edge is for quartersawn,
and the comb edge is for vein graining. Detachable
handle may be repositioned for various techniques. 3"
wide. The Metal and Triangular Wood Graining tools
also create a graining effect of "scratching" paint to
reveal other layers. The Five Headed Pencil Brush
grainer is used to create graining by the addition of
paint.
"252" Splatter Brush
Number "252" from Bestt Liebco has black nylon
bristles and a stainless steel ferrule, in widths of 3" and
4". In our tests, it provided the most continuous and
predictable spatter paint; its lightweight makes it very
easy to use.
Hand Sprayer
This lightweight alternative to bulky Hudson sprayers
allows for quick and easy spraying of paints, dyes, and
water. Use to distress, highlight, tone down, or texture
a painted surface. Use with dyes for translucent
effects. Easy to clean and comfortable to hold. Adjusts
to mists, spray, or solid stream. Operating and
maintenance instructions printed on the sprayer.
Capacity: 48oz.

Drapery / Drop Hardware
Muslin Drops
Drops are made from 100% cotton, sceneryweight
muslin. These drops have horizontal seams, 2" wide
hems, and a 6" bottom hem with a 4" pipe chain
pocket. The top if backed by 3.5" jute webbing.
Grommets are spaced evenly across the top,
approximately 12" on center. Each grommet is
threaded with 36" tie line.
Webbing
Heavy jute webbing, 3.5" wide, is used at the top of
drapes Cycs, scrims, and drops for strength, especially
when inserting grommets.
Grommets
Grommets are used at the tops of curtains and drops so
that they can be hung from a track or pipe. The
diameter of the hole, when inserted, is 3/8" for #2
grommets, and 1/2" for #4 grommets. Use the #4
grommets for heavier drapes. Kit contains punch and
wood block, diesetting tool, 24 nickelplated brass
grommets, and instructions everything you need to
set grommets, except a hammer.
Hooks
Hinges, Hooks, Pin Wire
Flats are fastened together with hinges. For flats under
14', use three backflap hinges, placed at top, center,
and bottom. Taller flats require 4 hinges. To take flats
apart for transporting, use loosepin hinges. Replace
lost pins with pin wire.
Rosco's Sure Hinge is a loosepin hinge with
interchangeable halves. Scored to bend around 1x
stock without protruding above surface, its offset holes
are countersunk for #8 screws and centerdrilled for
1/4" stove bolts. This "Swiss army knife of hinges" can
even be used to tighten Philips and slotted screws and
#10 hex nuts.
Use a batten of 1" x 3" lumber attached to the toggle
rails (cross supports) of the flats. To hang pictures or
other light objects on flats, use picture hangers.
Flying and Bracing
Lightweight scenery is hung by attaching lines or cable
to the top support pieces of the scenery with ceiling
plates or hanger irons. For heavy scenery, lines or
cable pass through ceiling plates at the top of the flats
and connect to hanger irons on the bottom. The
mounting holes in ceiling plates, hanger irons and floor
plates are countersunk for #9 screws.
Hooks are used to connect drape grommets to track
carriers or trim chain.
Teflon Safety Pins
For that quick repair. Teflon won't rust when used on
flameproofed velours.
Tie Line
Black cotton tieline, 1/8" diameter, for typing drops,
leg boarders, electric cables, etc. Beware of cheap
imitations! This solidcore tie line is strong and will
not stretch like cord without a solid core.
18
Stage Screws
The stage screw, with its tapered threads, is used to
fasten stage braces, foot irons and jacks to floors or
platforms. Use a stage screw and plug when
exceptional holding power is needed or when the
screw must be used in the same place several times.
First screw the plug into 1/2" hole in the floor; then
screw fits into the plug.

Hardware
Wagon Brakes
Rosco's Wagon Brake keeps rolling scenery securely in
place by lifting it off its casters quickly and quietly
with minimal effort. Screws or bolts to side of
platform; two brakes per unit recommended. Available
in regular (350lbs) or heavy duty (800lb) capacity.
Threaded extension spindles allow for extended reach
and fine adjustments.
RotoLocks
Rotolocks, also called coffin locks, are used as butt
joint panel fasteners. Simply designed with no springs
or delicate mechanical parts, they draw panels together
at sufficient pressure to establish air and watertight
seals. Will carry hightension loads (1400 lbs)
including shear loads (2000 lbs). Components may be
recessmounted or sidemounted. Tabbed rotolocks
can be routed into any 3/4" wood for solid right angle
or facetoface joints. Good for trade show style panels
that are wrapped in 3/4" material.
Cheeseboro Clamps
Cheeseboro clamps are constructed of cast steel for
pipetopipe clamping. They swivel to form any angle
for those specialty setups.
RotaLocks
Rotalocks are a simple device that locks pipes of
equal diameter together at right angles to each other.
Used to build grids and other portable or permanent
stage rigging, platforms, storage racks, scaffolds, etc.
Singlescrew locking, noslip design, 4000 lbs grip
with safety factor of 2, plated steel loop and saddle
with locking screw. Install or dismantle in seconds.
Use only with "schedule 40" steel pipes of equal
diameter.
Grid Lock
Pipe Clamp
This rugged pipe clamp consists of two matching
halves, attached at right angles to each other by four
bolts and locknuts. Available in two sizes, the halves
can be interchanged, allowing you to join pipes of
equal or unequal diameter. Used to build grids and
other portable or permanent stage rigging, platforms,
storage racks, scaffolds, etc. Set includes two matching
halves and 4 bolts with matching locknuts. Use only
with "schedule 40" steel pipe. Rated load to 1800 lbs.
Similar to the Rotalock, this economical pipe clamp
locks two pipes of equal diameter at right angles to
each other. Tightening two set screws with an Allen
wrench provides a 3000 lbs safe working load. The
pipe clamp, while similar to the Rotalock, requires a
nimble hand with an Allen wrench to tighten its two set
screws. Its low cost make it the ideal choice for more
permanent applications where repeated disassembly is
not required. Use only with "schedule 40" steel pipes
of equal diameter.

Fog & Haze
Types of Fog and Haze
Fog Fluid
Dry Ice Machine
Fog Scent
There are three primary types of fogproducing
equipment available to you. There are dry ice
machines, fog machines, and haze machines. Each one
produces a different effect. Knowing how each one
works will assist you in producing a show that matches
your artistic expectations.
The most realistic of fog. The CO2 vapors flow across
the floor creating a thick carpet of fog that dissipates
quickly. This fog stays log unless it is moved with a
fan. Creates a cool swirling effect and looks great
under lighting.
Fog fluid is glycolbased. Produces realistic, thick,
white fog. Designed for indoor applications with
chemical foggers. Nontoxic; will not irritate eyes,
skin, or throat. Leaves no oily residue. Smoke Fluid is
glycolbased. Designed to dissipate more quickly than
fog fluid; also nontoxic.
Hate the smell of fog? Try Fog Juice Scent. Fog scents
are made from waterbased materials. For scented fog,
add 1/4 oz. of Fog Juice Scent per quart of unscented
fog juice.
Clean Machine Fluid
Optimizes performance of fog machines by cleaning
out deposits in the fogger's heater core. Use when fog
output decreases or when storing machine for more
than one week. For use in all waterbased foggers.
Quartsize only.
Fantasy FX Spray Smoke
Fog Machine
Creates dense fog in an area. This is great for
producing a mysterious effect or smoke from fire.
There are many different kinds of fluid that dissipate at
a variety of rates and produce thick or thinner fog.
Haze Machine
Disperses fog evenly in the air. It is great for defining
lighting in the air and to create color in space.
Fog in a can! One can will fill a normal room 15 times
(20second sprays), 5 minutes total. Longlasting (12
hrs); "one can lasts all night." Nontoxic, non
irritating, odorless, meets EPA standards, no CFCs.
Ships via ground only, not via air.
Haze Fluid
Different haze fluids are designed to be used in
different machines. Failure to use the proper haze fluid
can invalidate the manufacturer's warrantee. All are
waterbased except the DF50 which is oilbased, but
approved for use in union houses.

Custom Gobos
Custom Steel Patterns
See your name in lights! Your company logo, special
artwork, or school name will glow in a custom pattern.
PNTA offers custom patterns made from 8mil
stainless steel in several sizes for the most common
ellipsoidals and moving lights. We email the art to the
manufacturer who will carefully recreate your art. The
quality is exceptional.
Artwork Requirements
• Artwork should be clean and cameraready. For best
results, the artwork should be larger than the final
pattern.
• Artwork for steel patterns can be emailed to us in
many different formats. JPEG is preferable. The
artwork should be in black and white. The cleaner the
starting image, the cleaner your pattern.
• Unless otherwise noted, the black areas of your
artwork will be the cutout areas where light will shine
through. The white areas will be steel and must be
bridged (connected). The manufacturer will add
needed bridges.

GAM Loop Series
GAM Loop Patterns
The GAM Loop Patterns add a new effect to image projection. These effects go a long ways towards "breaking the
box" of the stage. Shimmering rainfall and racing clouds are now easily projectable. The continuous loop effect
means the effect continues without attention from you. A wide variety of premade effect loops are available. You
can also have a custom effect made from stainless steel or polyester.
GAM Film/FX
The GAM Film/FX adds a continuous loop motion to
the realm of iris slot effects. This "rotator" fits in the
slot of your Source Four to create stunning effects.
It can be ordered for 120V, 220V, or DMX control. It is
built from stainless steel and can be run vertically or
horizontally.
GAM SX4
The GAM SX4 fits into your Source Four and converts
into a highperformance scenic projector. You can slide
the effects drawer in and out quickly to change
between the 16 different film loops. These effect loops
can last up to 4,000 hours in any Source Four 575W or
750W incandescent. You can also use the HMI for high
output or the HID series for longlife architectural
installations.

Gobo Rotators
Rosco Double Gobo Rotator
iPro Image Projector
Apollo Double Gobo Rotator
Apollo Smart Move Vertical
Designed to drop into the iris slot of a Source Four.
Dual motors afford independent control of speed (09
RPM) and direction for two rotating "B" size patterns.
You can sharp focus one or both patterns, or soften
both. Quiet and smooth.
• Variable Speed Controller provides four channels of
control for two Double Gobo Rotators. For full control
from your DMX512 light board, choose Rosco's
DMX/DC Controller.
• MFX Control Adapter: Two "wall wart" transformers
plug into power or dimmers (rated for inductive loads)
for variable speeds. Patterns rotate in opposite
directions.
Create dynamic effects for your ETC Source Four.
Smart Move DMX offers MCX control and indexing.
Quiet, beltdriven unit sends two Apollo patterns
spinning in opposite directions at rates ranging from
0.25 RPM to 25 RPM. Includes 200 indexable
positions. Fits most ellipsoidals.
Smart Move Single features 6 speeds in either
direction and plugs directly into 120V.
RotoQ DMX uses scroller cable and power supply.
32
The iPro Gobo Slide Projector fits in many standard
iris slots and allows projection of color images from
simple plastic slides as well as standard gobo textures.
With three different systems of projection, the slide is
well protected from the heat of the luminaire, giving
the slide a life of 15 50 hours with no degradation.
Using the slide kit, you can create your own slides on
an inkjet printer, or Rosco can produce a custom slide
from your artwork within a few days.
The Vertical features motion, time, and speed presets
that create vertical movement of patterns or text. Ideal
for subtle movement of corporate logos and other
retail, architectural and theatrical applications.

Lighting FAQs
FAQs
I'm a high school teacher assigned to advise the
Drama Club. What kind of lighting instruments do
we need for our spring production?
That's going to depend on your lighting plan. It can be
helpful to think of lighting instruments in five main
categories: focused, wash, intelligent, specialty/task,
LED.
Focused Lighting
Ellipsoidal, reflectorbased instruments such as the
ETC Source Four, Altman 360 series, Altman
Shakespeare, and Strand allow a focused or purposely
unfocused light to illuminate a specific area. Shutters
allow you to "frame" the light down to a defined area.
This is the main tool of the stage lighting designer.
"Mini" or "baby" ellipsoidals serve the same purpose,
but on a smaller scale. A tight beam can be used for a
special, and a broad beam can wash an entire area.
Zoom ellipsoidals offer even more flexibility.
Followspots, while perhaps deserving their own
category, are essentially an ellipsoidal on a stand with
handles added to control everything.
Wash Lighting
Scoops, borders, and Cyc lights are all intended to
cover large areas with light. Scoops provide a
widespread, softedged beam of flat, even light. Border
and Cyc lights are good for downlighting and for
drops; they can also be used on the floor. Often they
are multiplelamp units, available in various lengths
and circuit configurations. They provide soft, even
light and very wide coverage.
Fresnel instruments are most useful for short throw
and for small area lighting. They have a softedge
beam.
PARs are little more than a housing for a lamp and
clips for a color frame; the housing reduces light spill.
Their job is to add color and light to specific areas of
the stage.
Intelligent Lighting
These instruments perform a wide variety of tasks,
including pan and tilt, color change, focus and iris, all
controllable from a lighting console to preclude the
need for multiple instruments to perform a set of
different
tasks.
Specialty and Task Lighting
This category includes music stand lights, Littlites, and
a wide variety of work lights for lighting everything
from a sound console in the back of a dark theater to
placing a gobo or other image in the exact place you
need it.
LED Lighting
This relative newcomer has many advantages. The
units consume a very small amount of power, thus
reducing the need to worry about overloading circuits.
The units do not produce much heat. It is safe to place
them in an audience area. They contain their own
dimming in the units, so it is not necessary to have
separate dimmers. High quality units are still relatively
expensive. They come in a wide variety of
configurations. Call PNTA at (800) 6227850 to find an
LED fixture to match your budget and requirements.
How do I calculate the coverage of an ellipsoidal?
You can calculate the coverage from any throw
distance with the following formula:
Multiplying Factor x Throw Distance
= Diameter of Area Covered
(MF x T = D)
The MF (Multiplying Factor) is given for each of the
ellipsoidals listed on the following pages.
Can I run my followspot on a dimmer?
Sorry, but no. Trying to dim arcsource fixtures will
damage the ballast electronics. Dimming incandescent
source followspots can damage the fan motor, warp
reflectors, shorten bulb life, and even damage the
lenses.

available by calling (800) 6227850.

Lighting FAQs
I want to upgrade my system but can only afford a
new console right now. Can I integrate a new control
console with my 1983 dimmers?
Yes. Retrofits like this are a PNTA speciality. Call us at
(206) 6227850 for assistance.
What type of socket is this?
Will new instruments integrate well with my old
ones?
The difference in light output between older and newer
is clearly visible. Adding new instruments in pairs into
your existing system makes the difference less
noticeable. For information on what to add to your
particular system, call us at (206) 6227850.
Our Board of Directors has raised money for a new
lighting control system for the theater. What should
we get?
This will depend on your budget, space, and usage.
Lighting control covers a wide range of options, from
simple, selfcontained dimmers to computercontrolled
consoles running remote dimmers in multiple
locations. PNTA's factorytrained staff installs and uses
them in venues ranging from Whitman College in
Walla Walla to the newly renovated McCaw
Performance Hall, home of the Seattle Opera and
Pacific Northwest Ballet. We would love to discuss
which one would work best for your application. Call
us at (206) 6227850.
How do I determine how many lighting units a
circuit will take?
You never want to run more fixtures on a circuit than it
was designed to accept. At best, it will continually trip
the breaker, and at worst, it is a fire hazard. To figure
out how many amps you are drawing, use the
following formula:
Amps = Volts/Watts
(Volts is usually 115120; add up the watts of the
lamps you are using. Divide the volts by the watts for
the amp draw.)

LED Lighting
LED Lighting is revolutionizing many aspects of
event lighting. Because they have high output with
very little power draw, they are not only economical to
operate, but can also be used in a wide variety of
venues without worrying about blowing circuits. LED
lamps can last up to 100,000 hours. They produce little
heat, so you never have to worry about placing them
on the ground and someone getting burned. Even after
hours of use, the units will stay cool to the touch. They
have dimming built in, so they can be operated by a
controller without the costly and technical dimming
equipment required by standard lighting.
PNTA is a dealer for all of the major LED suppliers.
With our deep knowledge of these new products, we
are able to help you choose the correct fixture for your
application. Whether it is architectural, event, or
theatrical applications, we can help you make the best
decision.

Drapery / Fabrics
FAQs
Our theater backdrop was made in 1982. Do we need
to replace it?
It's a good idea. Backdrops made back these weren't
routinely flame proofed, as they are now, and, even if
your backdrop was originally flame proofed, over the
years the treatment becomes ineffective.
How do we decide what to replace it with?
That will depend on your budget, how the backdrop
will be used, and how closely you want to match the
other drapes in your theater. our draper staff will be
happy to work with you to determine the best solution
for your space and budget.
Do you repair drapes?
You betcha! Just call our drape staff to make
arrangements.
What kind of fabric should we get for making
drops and covering flats?
The standard for both is muslin, which you can buy
pretreated with flame proofing or untreated. We can
get this universal theatrical material in both forms and
in numerous widths from 80" to 197" (that's more than
16 feet wide without a seam).
Will muslin drops shrink when they're painted?
Yes. Painting or dyeing unstretched muslin will cause
shrinkage, and untreated (non flameretardant) muslin
will shrink more than drops made with flameretardant
fabric. For best results, drops should be stretched to a
frame or fastened to the floor before painting, allowing
some slack for shrinkage.
How are large drops constructed?
Drops are made from 100% cotton, sceneryweight
muslin. These drops have horizontal seams, 2" side
hems, and a 6" bottom hem with a 4" pipe/chain
pocket. The top is backed by 3.5" jute webbing.
Grommets are spaced evenly across the top,
approximately 12" on center. Each grommet is
threaded with a 36" tie line.
How are scrims constructed?
Scrims are made the same way as drops. The
difference between drops and scrims is the fabric.
Which scrim is best for the lighting and projection
effects I want?
Sharkstooth scrim, a ladderweave cotton, is the most
common and least expensive option.
Sharkstooth scrims have many uses, the success of
which may depend on tight control of stage lighting.
Scrim appears "solid" when it is lit from the front, but
"transparent" when lights are brought up from behind.
By cross fading the light, it is possible to "dissolve"
from one scene to another without interruption. White
scrims are used when adding color with light or dyes.
Black scrims "disappear" better than white scrims.
What other fabrics do you carry?
PNTA stocks and can special order a wide range of
theatrical fabrics. Some of the types of fabrics we
usually carry in stock include the following (all fabrics
are sold by the yard, call us to check stock):
Commando Cloth (16oz/yd), a heavy 100% cotton
fabric has a tight weave for opacity and a light
absorbing "brushed" surface. Used as a less expensive
alternative to velour for stage draperies and masking.
Flame retardant. 54" wide.
Duvetyne (12oz/yd) is similar to Commando Cloth but
lighter in weight and doesn't block out light
completely. Flame retardant. 54" wide.
Chroma Key Cyc Cloth is precisely colored for TV
and video effects. Blue or green. Flame retardant. 72"
wide.
Theatrical Gauze is a closely woven natural linen. It
can be used as a lightduty scrim when vertical seams
are acceptable. Also used for texture. Flame retardant.
72" wide.
Cheese Cloth is a loose, somewhat irregular, open
weave cloth. Used as texture for scenery and sculpture,
for reinforcing carved foam and for straining paint.
Allpurpose, not flame retardant. 36" wide.

Drapery / Fabrics
Are bolts and materials consistent?
No. Thread counts, widths, bolt lengths, and dye
lots may vary slightly from manufacturer to
manufacturer. They may be used interchangeably
in some situations. Call our drapery staff for
details about when you can and cannot
interchange different lots of fabric.
Do you ever sell remnants?
Yes. Remnants are ends that measure three yards
or less, and we almost always have them in
muslin, velour, scrim, and other fabrics just
waiting for the right person to come along and put
them to good use. Call us to check availability.
Drapery
Stage Drapes play many roles; they conceal the stage
until the action begins and define the performance
space; they also mask rigging, lighting, and whatever
is to be hidden backstage. They absorb sound and light,
focusing attention on the performers. Full drapes can
add elegance to a theater, and black drapes provide a
neutral background.
Front Drapes (grand drape, main curtain) are usually
made of medium or heavy velour, often in color. It may
be lined to add durability and sound absorption. Extra
fabric, called fullness, is sewn in pleats the width of
the drape 50% is typical. The pleats are sewn to
webbing at the top, which is then grommeted for the S
hooks by which the drape is suspended. A pocket
containing chain is is sewn inside the bottom hem.
This weight helps the drape hang in regular pleats.
Valance: in the same material as the grand is a short
piece the width of the proscenium opening, which
masks the grand drape track; the grand completes a
decorative "frame" for the stage picture.
Masking Drapes: constructed in the same fashion,
these are the upstage drapes that form the surrounding
backdrop. They may be created with a lighter velour or
less expensive Commando cloth. They are typically
black, but may be in a decorative color.
Legs (sometimes tormentors) mask the sides of the
stage. They are tall and relatively narrow.
Boarders (teasers like valances) mask the overhead
rigging. They are short and the width of the stage. Legs
and boarders may be hung by tying to pipe battens.
Back Drapes are two or more large drapes that fill the
width of the stage across the back. They may hang up
tied to a pipe.
Traveler is a pair of large drapes suspended from a
track normally operated by a pull cord. The grand is a
traveler; the black drape is often a traveler; and if the
stage is deep enough, there may be one or more mid
stage travelers.
A Drop is a large flat panel used as a backdrop to the
stage action. it is constructed similarly to the drapes
the top has webbing grommets and ties at 12" spacing;
the bottom has a pocket inside the hem for placement
of a pipe as weight to stretch the drop flat. Typically, it
is made from mediumweight muslin, but for special
effects, any material is possible. It may contain seams,
or at a greater cost, be seamless muslin. It may be used
in its original natural color (offwhite tan) or often
white or light blue. It may also be painted with a scene
for a specific show.
A Cyc (Cyclorama) is a drop the full width and height
of the stage which creates the maximum appearance of
sky as a backdrop, or for extensive play of varied
lighting.
A Scrim is constructed like a drop, but from a netlike
material that is semitransparent. The most common
type of scrim is sharkstooth.
