GRASSES AND GREENS SUPPLIES CC
GRASSES AND GREENS SUPPLIES CC Grasses and Greens Supplies CC was established in July 2008 where it operated from a family lounge and garage in Edenvale. After some big changes were made in the golf and turf consumable market and some of us were left unemployed, plans and future decisions had to be made. This was the start of Grasses and Greens Supplies CC. By June 2009, operating a business from home was no longer an option. Grasses and Greens Supplies decided to open a retail shop in Edenvale town opposite the Edenvale post office. The move made the company very central and convenient for most customers. The retail shop allowed Grasses and Greens Supplies to service the Golf Course Market, Sports and Recreation Facilities, Municipalities and directly to the home user. The public were able to come for technical advice and purchase stock at good prices, directly from the shop. We had three great years at the retail shop. By 2012, Grasses and Greens Supplies found that the shop space and storage facilities were no longer sufficient for our needs and once again it was time to move on. Grasses and Greens Supplies then purchased property in Edenvale and moved its full operation to this venue. These were exciting times for us. Establishing a business when the turf industry in South Africa was, and 5 years later still is going through very trying times has not been easy. Looking at the John Collier report for 2012, the statistics provided on the South African Golf Association (SAGA) website show that in 2008 there were 460 affiliated Golf Clubs whereas in 2012 there were only 451. As far as registered players are concerned the report states that in 2008 there were 136 818 registered players and in 2012 there were 125 771 players. In both cases a decline which is of great concern. Looking at the desk of the GCM – The official blog of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America’s (GCSAA) Golf Course Magazine, the following table is shown: NGF: U.S. Course openings remain stagnant Finding oneself in a part of the United States where a new golf course opened its doors in 2012 became infrequent. The same can be said for South Africa. Grasses and Greens Supplies’ main focus has always been the golfing industry, providing basic technical support, cost effective solutions and reasonably priced products. Due to the economic climate and the way the industry has turned, our focus has had to change. We now provide all of the above to the turf industry as a whole, including the normal home gardener to the technically qualified turf Superintendent. Grasses & Greens Supplies CC March 2014 Telephone Number: (011) 452-551 Address: No 59, 13th Avenue, Edendale, Edenvale Slow and Controlled Release Fertilizers: Haifa Multicote: Controlled-Release Fertilizer Blends for turf grass applications, Lawns, Sportsfields, Pastures, Golf courses, Rollon-Lawn and Bowling greens. Multicote Turf products combine controlled release nutrients and fast-acting nutrients for immediate uptake by plants. Multicote Turf is based on Multicote® polymer coated fertilizers. Following application, the granules start to absorb moisture, which dissolves the nutrients inside. The dissolved nutrients diffuse slowly and continuously to the root zone, at a rate dictated by soil temperature solely. Soil type, water content, soil pH, and microbial activity do not affect the release rate. A single application of Multicote Turf results in constant supply of plant nutrients for 3 to 4 months. Due to the Multicote® technology, nutrient release rate matches the nutritional needs of the plant, which improves the efficiency of the applied nutrients and preventing fertilizer losses. The benefits of Multicote Turf fertilizers are Labour saving – less applications, reduced application rates - thrifty use of fertilizer materials, reduced leaching – minimized contamination of groundwater, polymer coating – for a reliable release profile, high concentration of nutrients in the formulae, controlled release of nitrogen and potassium – for balanced nutrition over time, contain plant nutrients only – no chlorides or other detrimental elements. Multicote Turf is safe and simple for use. Multicote Turf is available at a wide range of formulae and release longevities, to meet specific needs under varying growth conditions. Andersons: Andersons Nutri DG is a combination of premium turf nutrients and patented dispersing granule technology designed to optimize granular applied turf nutrition. Upon contact with water, each Nutri DG granule disperses into thousands of micro particles that move through the turf canopy and into the root zone. Dispensability eliminates problems with mower pick-up, sticky residue on equipment and product washing or run-off. No Mower Pickup, No Particle Movement and No Mower Damage or Residual Shells. Some Nutri DG products contain Proactin, a matrix of concentrated l-amino acids, plant active vitamins and other bio nutrients. Proactin increases micro flora, improves soil structure and facilitates the assimilation of nutrients by turf. Plant active vitamins improve secondary root development, which helps improve absorption and translocation of nutrients in the plant. Nutri DG combined with Proactin helps create a healthy soil environment so that turf can better tolerate stress conditions. Humic Acid precursor is a unique water soluble binder system used in Nutri DG. It is derived from a special source of biomass and is produced through a combination of physical and chemical processes that creates three dimensional polyphenolic carbohydrate biopolymers. Grasses & Greens Supplies CC March 2014 Telephone Number: (011) 452-551 Address: No 59, 13th Avenue, Edendale, Edenvale How Does Humic Acid Precursor Work? Humic acid precursor contains a soluble form of organic carbon which releases into the soil as Nutri DG and DG Pro granules disperse. Research has shown that organic carbon holds nitrogen in the soil and binds readily with carbon based acids. This increases the amount of dissolved organic carbon in the soil water. Through biochemical reactions in the soil, humic acid precursor is transformed in the humic and fulvic acids which help chelate nutrients in the soil. For best results, humic acid precursor should be applied at light, frequent rates to maintain activity. Pests include weeds, disease-causing organisms, some insects, and other destructive organisms. Inevitably, when pests are mentioned pesticides are considered as important means for achieving control. Pesticides are valuable components of a cultural programme, but pest management includes more than simply selecting and applying the appropriate pesticide to control specific organisms. Many pests are, in effect, controlled without the use of pesticides as long as the plant is healthy and the correct IPM (Integrated Pest Management) programme is being used. We at present are able to supply Pesticide Chemicals from:- Makhteshim Agrochem, Philagro, Nulandis (Plaaskem), Bayer, Syngenta, Effekto, Villa Crop Protection, Exportos, Philagro and other chemical companies. Grasses & Greens Supplies CC March 2014 Telephone Number: (011) 452-551 Address: No 59, 13th Avenue, Edendale, Edenvale STOP AND READ THE BELOW WARNINGS! Chemicals vary in the hazards associated with their use. Some such as nematicides and fumigants can be very hazardous. The relative hazards posed by exposure will be indicated on the label. All chemicals regardless of which precautionary statement is carried on the label should always be treated as hazardous. Read the label and MSDS properly. Use registered turf products only. Follow all instructions on the label properly. Do not over apply. Once something is dead it is dead. You cannot kill it a second time by doubling the dosage rate. Ensure that the proper registered product is being used for the correct pest. A qualified Pest Control Operator should only apply pesticide. Ensure that the Operator IS WEARING the correct safety clothing, face masks, overall, gloves, boots etc. Always store chemicals in their original containers, do not fill an old container with another product. This is just looking for trouble. Ensure that all containers have a label on them. Dispose of containers properly and ensure they have been washed out three times and have puncture holes so that no one else can use them. Discarded containers should be taken to an approved sanitary landfill. If you have chemicals that have expired then you need to get hold of a company like Hazchem who are a registered chemical waste disposal company and they can assist you. Pesticides vary in the hazards associated with their use. Some such as nematicides and fumigants can be very hazardous. The relative hazards posed by exposure will be indicated on the label. All pesticides regardless of which precautionary statement is carried on the label should always be treated as hazardous. Grasses & Greens Supplies CC March 2014 Telephone Number: (011) 452-551 Address: No 59, 13th Avenue, Edendale, Edenvale Herbicides and Growth Regulators – A weed is any plant that is growing where it is not wanted, a plant out of place. For this we would use a herbicide. What is a herbicide? “A herbicide is a chemical which stops plant growth or destroys plants or vegetation.” Herbicides can be split into two groups, selective and non-selective. Selective would be to kill one specific type of plant and non-selective would be to kill everything. What Is a Plant Growth Regulator? “A PGR is an organic compound, natural or synthetic, that when present or applied in small amounts results in a change in plant growth and development.” Changes include better colour, increased turf density, fewer clippings, reduced seed heads, enhanced establishment, improved recuperative potential, deeper roots, better stress tolerance, etc. Growth regulators for turf have been used since the 1950’s. PGRs developed prior to the 1980’s slowed turf growth by slowing cell division. They were often phytotoxic. Flurprimidoland paclobutrazol, developed in the 1980’s, slowed turf growth by slowing the production of all forms of gibberellic acid. They are root absorbed. Trinexapac-ethyl developed in the 1990’s, slows turf growth by slowing the production of GA1, the final form of GA. All other 120+ forms of GA that lead to formation of GA1, are not stopped. Some of the herbicides and growth regulators we have available are Clipless, Aurora, Brush Off, Cantron, Cato, Chopper, Cultar, Erase, Ethapon, Focus Ultra, Garlon, Glyphosate, Gramoxon, Herrbifume, Kerb, MCPA, Metagan Gold, Midstream, Midget, MSMA, Nominee, Orbit, Paraquat, Peak, Round-up, Servian, Simazine, Superlawnweeder, Snapshot, Touchdown, Trooper, Tumbleweed and more……. Grasses & Greens Supplies CC March 2014 Telephone Number: (011) 452-551 Address: No 59, 13th Avenue, Edendale, Edenvale Fungicides: A healthy and vigorous turf results from grasses adapted well to the site and maintenance within species requirements. Diseases develop from stress related problems, wrong site selection and improper management practices. Frequent mowing encourages dense, low growth habit. Each species has an optimal height of cut. LOW mowing height stresses the plants. Diseases may develop from physiological stress related problems such as mowing too low or infrequently and the incorrect mowing. Fertilization also play’s a big part. Key to quality turf is the 17 essential elements. The species and cultivars nutritional requirements vary. The rate of fertilization varies by soils, irrigation, rainfall and mowing. Nitrogen gives a green colour and a lot of leaf growth. The frequency and timing of nitrogen applications are important. Excess nitrogen gives lush tissue with reduced disease tolerance and deficient nitrogen gives starved tissue with no plant vigour and the plant begins to stress. A healthy and vigorous turf results from maintenance within the species fertility requirements and diseases develop from physiological stress related problems, excess fertility and improper timing of fertility practices. Fungicides can either be contact, translaminar or systemic. Contact fungicides are not taken up into the plant tissue and only protect the plant where the spray is deposited. Translaminar fungicides redistribute the fungicide from the upper, sprayed leaf surface to the lower, unsprayed surface; systemic fungicides are taken up and redistributed through the xylem vessels. Few fungicides move to all parts of a plant. Some are locally systemic, and some move upwardly. Most fungicides that can be bought retail are sold in a liquid form. A very common active ingredient is sulphur, present at 0.08% in weaker concentrates, and as high as 0.5% for more potent fungicides. Fungicides in powdered form are usually around 90% sulphur and are very toxic. The major chemical fungicide groups are: DMI’s/Sterol Inhibitors: Propiconazole, triadimefon, myclobutanil, cypriconazole, fenarimol Dicarboximides: Iprodione, vinclozolin Benzimidizoles: Thiophanate-methyl Substituted Benzenes: Chlorothalonil, PCNB Strobilurinanalogs: Azoxystrobin, trifloxystrobin Others: EBDC’s, mefanoxam, fosetyl-al, flutolanil, propamocarb hydrochloride Some of the fungicides we have available are Alliette, Banner, Bumper, Cabrio, Copper Oxychloride, Daconil, Dithane, Essence, Flint, Heritage, Iprodione, Mancozeb, Odeon, Fludex Phyto-Cure, Previcure, Pencozeb, Rambo, Repute, Rovral, Ridomil, Sumisclex, Thiazole and more……. Grasses & Greens Supplies CC March 2014 Telephone Number: (011) 452-551 Address: No 59, 13th Avenue, Edendale, Edenvale Insecticide Pest Control:An insecticide is a pesticide used against insects. They include ovicides and larvicides used against the eggs and larvae of insects respectively. Nearly all insecticides have the potential to significantly alter ecosystems. The classification of insecticides is done in several different ways: Systemic insecticides: Incorporated by treated plants. Insects ingest the insecticide while feeding on the plants. Contact insecticides: Toxic to insects brought into direct contact. Efficacy is often related to the quality of the pesticide application, with small droplets (such as aerosols) often improving performance. Natural insecticides: Nicotine, pyrethrum and neem extracts are made by plants as defences against insects. Nicotine-based insecticides are still being widely used in the US and Canada though they are barred in the EU. Plant-incorporated protectants (PIPs): Insecticidal substances produced by plants after genetic modification. For instance, a gene that codes for a specific Bacillus thuringiensis biocidal protein is introduced into a crop plant's genetic material. Then, the plant manufactures the protein. Since the biocide is incorporated into the plant, additional applications, at least of the same compound, are not required. Inorganic insecticides: These are manufactured with metals and include arsenates, copper compounds and fluorine compounds, which are now seldom used, and sulphur, which is commonly used. Organic insecticides: These are synthetic chemicals which comprise the largest numbers of pesticides available for use today. The mode of action is how the pesticide kills or inactivates a pest. This is another way of classifying insecticides. The mode of action is important in predicting whether an insecticide will be toxic to unrelated species, such as fish, birds and mammals. Grasses & Greens Supplies CC March 2014 Telephone Number: (011) 452-551 Address: No 59, 13th Avenue, Edendale, Edenvale Classes of insecticides Organochlorides: The insecticidal properties of the best known representative of this class of insecticides, DDT, was made by the Swiss Scientist Paul Müller. For this discovery, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1948. DDT was introduced on the market in 1944. The contemporary rise of the chemical industry facilitated the large-scale production of DDT and related chlorinated hydrocarbons. DDT functions by opening the sodium channels in the nerve cells of the insect. In 1962, Silent Spring by American biologist Rachel Carson was published. The book catalogued the environmental impacts of the indiscriminate spraying of DDT in the US and questioned the logic of releasing large amounts of chemicals into the environment without fully understanding their effects on ecology or human health. The book suggested that DDT and other pesticides may cause cancer and that their agricultural use was a threat to wildlife, particularly birds. Its publication was one of the signature events in the birth of the environmental movement, and resulted in a large public outcry that eventually led to DDT being banned for agricultural use in the US in 1972. DDT was subsequently banned for agricultural use worldwide under the Stockholm Convention, but its limited use in disease vector control continues to this day and remains controversial. Along with the passage of the Endangered Species Act, the US ban on DDT is cited by scientists as a major factor in the comeback of the bald eagle, the national bird of the United States, and the peregrine falcon from near-extinction in the contiguous US. Organophosphates and carbamates: Another large class of synthetic insecticides are the organophosphates. Again these target the insect's nervous system. Organophosphates interfere with the enzymes acetylcholinesterase and other cholinesterases, disrupting nerve impulses, killing or disabling the insect. Organophosphate insecticides and chemical warfare nerve agents (such as sarin, tabun, soman and VX) work in the same way. Organophosphates have an accumulative toxic effect to wildlife, so multiple exposures to the chemicals amplifies the toxicity. Carbamate insecticides have similar toxic mechanisms to organophosphates, but have a much shorter duration of action and are thus somewhat less toxic. Pyrethroids: To mimic the insecticidal activity of the natural compound pyrethrum another class of pesticides, pyrethroid pesticides, has been developed. These compounds are non-persistent sodium channel modulators, and are much less acutely toxic than organophosphates and carbamates. Compounds in this group are often applied against household pests. Neonicotinoids: These are synthetic analogues of the natural insecticide nicotine (with a much lower acute mammalian toxicity and greater field persistence). These chemicals are nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonists. Broad-spectrum— systemic insecticides, they have a rapid action (minutes-hours). They are applied as sprays, drenches, seed and soil treatments—often as substitutes for organophosphates and carbamates. Treated insects exhibit leg tremors, rapid wing motion, stylet withdrawal (aphids), disoriented movement, paralysis and death. Imidacloprid may be the most commonly used neonicotinoid. It has recently come under scrutiny for its deleterious effects on honeybees. Ryanoids: These are synthetic analogues with the same mode of action as ryanodine, a naturally occurring insecticide extracted from Ryania speciosa (Flacourtiaceae). They bind to calcium channels in cardiac and skeletal muscle, blocking nervous transmission. Only one such insecticide is currently registered, Rynaxypyr, generic name chlorantraniliprole. Grasses & Greens Supplies CC March 2014 Telephone Number: (011) 452-551 Address: No 59, 13th Avenue, Edendale, Edenvale Nematicides: A nematicide is a type of chemical pesticide used to kill plant-parasitic nematodes. Nematicides have tended to be broad-spectrum toxicants possessing high volatility or other properties promoting migration through the soil. Temik (Aldicarb), a carbamate is an example of a commonly used commercial nematicide. Aldicarb is a cholinesterase inhibitor which prevents the breakdown of acetylcholine in the synapse. In case of severe poisoning, the victim dies of respiratory failure. It is no longer authorised for use in the European Union (“EU”) and in August, 2010, Bayer Crop Science announced that it plans to discontinue Aldicarb by 2014. Human health, safety and environmental concerns have resulted in the widespread deregistration of several other agronomically important nematicides. Prior to 1985, the persistent halocarbon DBCP was a widely used nematicide and soil fumigant. However, it was banned from use after being linked to sterility among male workers. There are several natural nematicides. An environmentally benign garlic-derived polysulfide product is approved for use in the EU (under Annex 1 of 91/414) and the UK as a nematicide. Another common natural nematicide is obtained from neem cake, the residue obtained after cold-pressing the fruit and kernels of the neem tree. Nematophagous fungi, a type of carnivorous fungi, can be useful in controlling nematodes, Paecilomyces being one example. Rodent Pest Control: Rodenticides, colloquially rat poison, are a category of pest control chemicals intended to kill rodents. Rodenticides are controversial, due to Secondary Poisoning and their risks to children, pets and wildlife. Single feed baits are chemicals sufficiently dangerous that the first dose is sufficient to kill. Rodents are difficult to kill with poisons because their feeding habits reflect their place as scavengers. They will eat a small bit of something and wait, and if they don't get sick, they continue. An effective rodenticide must be tasteless and odourless in lethal concentrations, and have a delayed effect. Some of the insecticide pest control products we have available are Ant bait, Blattenex, Cutworm Bait, Chlorpirifos, Cropguard, Dursban, Cyprin, Decis, Demeton, Icon, Kamakaze, Karate Zeon, Karbaspray, Killem fly bait, Koinor, Merit, Meridian, Maxforce, Oleum, Parathion, Pyrinex, Quickphos tablets, Racumin rat and mouse bait, Racumin rat and mouse blocks, Rossi, Snail bait, Sneak, Turfguard, and more……. Grasses & Greens Supplies CC March 2014 Telephone Number: (011) 452-551 Address: No 59, 13th Avenue, Edendale, Edenvale Wetting Agents, Surfactants, Buffers and Penetrants – There would be no grass without water. Green grass and water are as closely entwined as love and marriage! As temperature’s rise, humidity is lowered. By mid-afternoon, grass plants are losing more water through their leaves than they can take up through their roots. Grass plants start to wilt and characteristically turn a purplish blue. A keen eye will recognise the symptoms and be prepared. Wilting grass can be brought back to health by syringing. This is a very light application of water, administered by a hose and a cooling nozzle or by the syringe cycle of a watering system. Over time, greens develop brown areas of wilted grass. The soil under these areas becomes dry and cannot absorb water. Wetting agents were introduced to break down the viscosity (thickness) of the water. Wetting agents make water droplets smaller and wetter so water can penetrate into the smallest of pore spaces. A Wetting agent is any compound that causes a liquid to spread more easily across or penetrate into the surface of a solid by reducing the surface tension of the liquid. Today’s Superintendent has a dizzying array of wetting agent products available to purchase. As a general class of turf care products, wetting agents are one of the more frequently used on golf courses. Not every surfactant or wetting agent is the same. It depends upon what you want that product to accomplish. Is it to rewet a dry soil? Is it to prevent dry spots from developing in the first place? Is it to make, “water wetter” and to try to move water through the soil? Is it to improve irrigation efficiency and turf performance using less water? Is it to use wetting agents (rightly or wrongly) as a spray adjuvant when applying herbicides, insecticides, growth regulators, or fungicides? Is it to improve or reduce leaching? These are not easy questions to answer because, again, there are so many different wetting agent/soil surfactant chemistries available to the industry. Your major surfactant chemistries are Anionic and Blends with anionics, nonionic surfactants, cationic surfactants and new chemistries. Some of the Wetting Agents, Surfactants, Buffers and Penetrants we have available are Aqua-Aid, FWY-ISP, Aquifer, Conduit90, OARS, AQM – Aqu-Max, Recover, AcidipHy, Aqu-Cal, reDEWce, Remediator, Salt-Aid, Verde-Cal, Carbo-Aid, Aqua-Root, Dispatch, Reload, Remain, Detox, Hawkeye, AgriOx, Aquaduct, Breakthru, Complement, Caltrisal, HumaWet, Infiltrate, Pentera, Revolution, Tricure, Yield Up, Pervade, Retain Pro, Bladbuff.
